everything had been such a blur and happened so fast that steve wasn’t sure what had happened anymore. he thought if some parts of it had been his imagination, but… he had definitely gotten into a fight with both jack and adam, but only he had come out injured. which was weird to think about, because he had definitely thrown around a couple of punches and he remembered quite well hitting jack in the face and then immediately feeling the pain in his face. he wasn’t sure how that had worked, but he wouldn’t be the one to figure out either. not while he was recovering, he thought to himself.
he looked over at adam for a couple of moments, pursing his lips as he did. he knew that he wouldn’t do anything like he had done at the carnival, he was hoping that whatever had happened had been a one time thing, which he doubted. but he wasn’t about to go around doubting everything that adam did. it just wouldn’t be cool of him to do so, and adam was a good friend to him when he wasn’t puking out some black goo and attacking him.
letting out yet another chuckle, immediately wincing at the pain that it caused, steve shook his head. “listen, i’ll ask the nurses to bring some more for you.” he said, nodding his head slowly when he heard cole talking about eddie. sighing, steve nodded again. “yeah, they… they arrested him. which was stupid because eddie would never do anything to hurt anyone. they were just trying to find a way to get him arrested for… the shit that happened two years ago.” he said, shaking his head, clearly still angry that someone would just do that for fun. he hated everyone who had been part of arresting eddie. “we’ll all be okay… eventually.” he nodded, letting out a sigh. at least he hoped that they would be.
at the question, steve just shrugged his shoulders. he hoped that he would have all of the answers to give to cole. he hated that he had been dragged into this, just like everyone he knew had been dragged. he hated that something was back and that they couldn’t do anything about it. “i don’t know… i really don’t know. i would try asking nancy, she’s… she’s the whole brains of the group. i’m sure she knows something by now.” he said, not knowing if it was true or not, but considering their last encounters with something supernatural, nancy was always the one to figure it out.
xx.
Cole tried, desperately, to read Steve’s expression when the others’ eyes fell on Adam. Right now, in the hospital room, Adam was the least threatening presence-- his arm snaked around Cole’s fingers, intertwined, dirty blond hair rising and falling with his breaths. But Cole and Steve both knew what he was capable of when he wasn’t in control, and it was something Cole had begun to fear. What would others say or do to Adam now? And could Cole protect him? From others, from whatever was causing the blackouts?
He trusted Steve to be fair and kind, he had no reason not to. Since Steve had stopped hanging out with Tommy H and Carol, Cole had seen another side of him-- from afar-- a more sensitive and caring Steve Harrington. And after everything that had happened between the two of them, Cole hoped that Steve’s goodwill could extend to Adam, too.
Cole smiled, relieved that Steve’s comment pulled him out of his head, at least for the time being. “Yeah, bat your pretty eyes at them and get them to bring extra, while you’re at it,” he joked. It felt nice, even normal for a minute, until Steve told him about Eddie. Cole’s frown pulled his eyebrows together. “No, he wouldn’t. That’s bullshit,” his voice raised, which hurt his throat. “I can’t believe they’re holding onto that, with... Chrissy back.” Steve’s sigh seemed more hopeful than it was convincing, but Cole decided to let it slide. Positivity, however forced, wasn’t bad for them at the moment.
He nodded, then frowned when he remembered that Nancy was in the hospital, too. He wasn’t surprised, really, that she was the brains. It made him feel even a little confident that whatever this was could be stopped, with Nancy at the helm. “Is she doing okay? Have you heard?” Cole asked, worry creasing his brow. He leaned back in his bed for a minute and studied his and Adam’s hands, how they’d always fit together so naturally. Cautiously, he glanced back up at Steve. “You know that that wasn’t him, right? He would never... he doesn’t hurt people.” Cole’s eyes betrayed his desperation for someone to believe it, for someone to be on their side.
stevehharringtcns:
steve had to admit that being at the hospital quickly stopped being interesting pretty fast. he was hoping that it would at least be a little like general hospital, a show that he had been forced to watch with his mom when he was younger. and speaking of his parents, they had only visited him twice and then left for work, but he was used to being it like that. he rested his head back on his pillow and let out a long yawn, closing his eyes for a couple of moments until he heard someone calling out his name. he opened his eyes and turned to look at his new roommate, looking at a sleeping adam. eddie had just gone to the bathroom after steve had convinced him that he would be okay for a couple of minutes.
“what?” he asked cole, turning his head to look at him. never in his life had he thought about this happening to the two of them, but he was happy that they were alright and that things hadn’t been worse. he remembered the way adam had acted during the carnival and he wondered how cole was dealing with that. “i’m good… you know, as good as i can be.” he said, remembering all the bruises and broken ribs he had. the broken wrist didn’t help either, he thought to himself.
he let out a small chuckle, which was enough to make his broken ribs ache as he flinched slightly, when cole asked about his jello. the two had been in an explosion but often found themselves fighting over this. “oh, yeah… sorry, i was hungry. and there weren’t any nurses around. they told me i can’t use the emergency button unless it’s actually for emergencies.” he said with a weak smile. “how are you doing? and… how’s he doing?” he asked, as he looked over at adam for a couple of moments, then back at cole.
xx.
Cole definitely hadn’t gotten it as bad as Steve, just a few broken ribs from the impact of the explosion compared to Steve’s broken ribs and broken wrist and general injuries from fighting Adam and Jack. Frowning at the memory, Cole’s hand tightened around Adam’s. As relieved as he was that the blackout has passed, he couldn’t ignore the pit of fear in his stomach. Fear about what would happen to Adam if that happened again.
People were mad, and they were blaming Billy for now, but what happened when they realized that a whole group of people-- Adam included-- had been part of the scheme? What would they do to him? Cole couldn’t think about it-- he was already grasping at the threads of sanity, trying to remain strong for Adam’s sake, so he pushed the thoughts aside.
“Good enough to steal my fucking jello,” Cole teased, looking enviously at the empty cups of the most appealing hospital food on Steve’s bedside table. “I’m glad you’re okay, man. And Eddie? Is it true that they... arrested him?” Cole asked, concern written on his face. He knew Eddie had since gotten out, as he’d seen him visiting Steve, but he worried about what that meant for Eddie’s record. “I’ll be okay,” Cole moved to shrug, then winced at the movement. He tacked on, “Eventually.”
Following Steve’s gaze to his sleeping boyfriend, Cole frowned. “I don’t know. It was all so... not him. And he doesn’t remember any of it. Do you know what that means?” Cole shot Steve a desperate glance; Steve certainly knew more about the Upside Down than he, maybe he had some more answers.
who: Cole & @stevehharringtcns
where: the gayest hospital room in Hawkins <3
Cole had been in and out of sleep for... he wasn’t sure how long, exactly. A few hours, a few days? Not a few months-- if it had been a few months, he’s sure he’d have at least a little bit of stubble gathering on his jaw. Brushing a hand over his still-smooth skin, he looked at the bed across from him. The last time he remembered being awake, when Max was here, she’d opened the curtain so he could see his temporary roommate: Steve Harrington.
“Psst, Steve,” Cole whispered, careful not to wake Adam up. The one good thing about being hospitalized was that Adam hadn’t left his side for more than a few hours, and he’d been sleeping with their arms tangled together. He wasn’t sure if Adam moved every time a nurse walked in or if he was just past the point of caring.
When he’d successfully gotten Steve’s attention, Cole shot him a brave smile. First order of business: “How are you doing?” Then: “Did you eat my fucking jell-o?”
stevehharringtcns:

steve looked at cole as he moved to get another drink for them. with the conversation, steve hadn’t really paid attention to his bottle, so when the other handed him the second one, he just grabbed it and held onto it, now holding two bottles in both his hands, before tilting them both towards in a cheer way once the other spoke. “right… at least in lover’s lake. it just doesn’t seem like a good place to swim anymore.” he said with a small chuckle, nodding his head as he took a sip from the first bottle he had and letting out a sigh. it felt good to talk about everything, especially with someone like cole. he had never expected for this to happen and if someone were to tell him it would be with cole montgomery, he wouldn’t have believed it.
seeing cole laugh made steve raise an eyebrow, nodding his head as the other explained their connection with chrissy. “oh… i didn’t know about that.” he said, nodding his head slowly. “she’s really nice… i mean, even when i was in high school, she would usually sit with… you know, the jocks and all of that, but i had no idea she was doing that for you guys. that’s… sweet.” he said with a smile. hearing cole say that eddie liked him and that the way he looked at him was obvious, steve nodded his head. maybe it was all in his head - he was looking for reasons on why eddie wouldn’t be interested in him, self-sabotaging if one could call it that. he just hoped that one day the two could share how they really felt about one another. “you would think i would know what a look means, but liking a dude really makes it a whole new experience…” he said quietly, shaking his head as he chuckled.
steve appreciated that cole had taken the time to talk to him about it. he could have just dismissed him, but he didn’t. and steve was thankful. he smiled over at cole, nodding his head at the other’s statement. “well, i definitely got some practice with them… i’m sure eddie did too.” he said with a smile. he thought of the party and all of the things he had done together. sure, they gave him a hard time, but at the end of the day, steve knew that they were the closest thing he had to family. and that was saying something, considering he shared a house with his parents. maybe eddie felt the same way. “i guess you can say that… they’re kind of hard to ignore.” he said with a chuckle.
xx.
“Definitely not in Lover’s Lake. It’s eerie enough being this close to it,” Cole shuddered. He couldn’t shake the feeling that whatever it was was still out there, waiting for him. Shaking his head and taking another swig of beer, Cole decided that he would stop thinking about it for the night. Or, he would try to. But Steve was making it easier, by having a genuine conversation with him-- one that wasn’t all teasing and shallow, like they usually did. Earnestness looked good on Steve Harrington, unsurprisingly.
Cole smiled with a fondness he rarely felt for others-- it was a category reserved for Adam, Chrissy, and Max. “Yeah, she’s great. She and Adam dated, you know, but obviously that didn’t work out... thank God all stayed friends,” he chuckled. Cole studied the multiple emotions that seemed to flash across Steve’s face and, God, he could relate. The agonizing months of after-school tutoring when Cole had to pretend he saw Adam as a friend or teammate only... he wouldn’t go back to that for anything. He nodded to communicate his understanding. “I get that, I really do. The first move is always the scariest,” he said, remembering his and Adam’s first kiss-- rushed, nervous, in the back of Adam’s car, but still complete magic.
With a laugh, Cole shook his head. It was a surprise to everyone, he was sure, that Steve Harrington had become the designated babysitter for the party. But now that he knew Steve a little better, it made all the sense in the world. He was a comforting and steady presence, and he did have a nice car. "All that to say, I don’t think it’ll scare Eddie off. Just one man’s opinion,” he said, a hint of teasing in his tone. Then, with a more serious look, he asked: “So, what’s your next move, Harrington?”

steve couldn’t blame cole for what he was saying. he would have probably done the same if he hadn’t been a swimmer during high school, knowing that he just couldn’t stop swimming. but even then, he preferred using the public pool rather than his own pool. “right… that makes sense. you know, i haven’t really been able to use my pool after…” he said, narrowing his eyes as he tried to remember. he didn’t remember, but he knew that he had associated a bad memory to his pool, even if he couldn’t remember exactly what it was. “you know what, i don’t even know… it’s just that my pool kind of gives me the creeps and i don’t like being near that much. but it’s kind of hard to ignore it.” he said with a small shrug of his shoulders, pursing his lips as he looked at cole.
steve couldn’t remember the last time he had liked someone this much. obviously, he had liked nancy a lot, but those feelings eventually had faded away. and there was always his crush he had on robin, but that had been cut short, obviously. he looked over at cole, nodding his head slowly, but frowning slightly when cole said that eddie didn’t like girls. “right, right… but, even if he doesn’t like nancy.” he said, letting out a sigh. “what if he liked… you know, chrissy? the two were seen together a lot before she… disappeared or whatever. you can’t tell me that they weren’t like… into each other, right?” he asked, raising an eyebrow at his own question. steve wondered if eddie would be dating chrissy if she hadn’t disappeared, but he decided to not think about it that much.
listening to cole talk made steve a little more relaxed. it didn’t fix how he was feeling, but it definitely gave him some more comfort, knowing that he wasn’t alone in this situation. he would never have thought that when they made out in the back of his car, that this is how they would end up - with steve asking cole for advice. “thank you, cole… that’s really cool of you.” he said, nodding his head with a smile. “i should talk to him about this, but i don’t want him to get scared or anything. plus, i’m not sure if the whole talk about… wanting a family and six kids will work on eddie.” he said, sighing.
xx.
Cole studied Steve’s face as he spoke, trying to determine whether or not Harrington was pulling his leg. But his confusion seemed genuine, which maybe... was worse. Cole finished off the beer Steve had originally handed him and slipped into the kitchen, grabbing two more from the fridge and presenting one to Steve. “Cheers to never swimming again,” he said with a smirk. Maybe this was his gift, making light of really terrifying shit.
He couldn’t hold back his laugh when Steve mentioned Chrissy. Quickly, he explained so Steve wouldn’t think he was laughing at him. “Sorry. I just... Chrissy covered for me and Adam a lot back in high school.” It was funny to think of her, perfect Christian Chrissy Cunningham, being part of yet another scheme to cover for two guys. “To be honest, Harrington? I’m sure Eddie likes you. You don’t just look at a guy like that unless you want to jump his bones.” Cole didn’t elaborate on how he knew that look from Eddie; it wasn’t relevant, especially with the state Steve was in.
Cole took a sip of his beer to hide his smile. It was surreal; at first, Cole was sure what happened between him and Steve was a one-off, just a jock experimenting. And honestly, Cole hadn’t expected it to ever come up again, but he was sort of glad it did. At least so that they could be friends... or something. “No problem, seriously. I get it.” He chuckled at Steve’s thought process. “Don’t you both like... kind of already have six kids? With the DnD club and all?” he teased. Cole swirled the beer around in the bottle, giving Steve a one-shoulder shrug. “It’s a scary conversation, but maybe what’s scarier is not having it at all.” Jesus, he needed a blunt. If only he could take his own advice.
stevehharringtcns:

cole’s response made steve nod his head slowly, letting out a sigh. he figured that someone would have told him about what had happened two years before, but he didn’t feel like talking about it. he was sure the scars on his torso spoke for themselves, if cole had even noticed that. raising an eyebrow once he heard cole talk about how adam didn’t have any marks, he sighed again. they were not close to figuring anything out and it didn’t seem like that was going to change anytime soon. steve just hoped that sooner or later, one of them would figure it out, but it definitely wouldn’t be him. he was better at swinging bats either way. “that’s… weird. but as long as the two of you are okay… just don’t go swimming in there anytime soon. once is enough.” he said with a nod, smiling at cole.
as the conversation switched about steve’s love life, steve wished they were talking about something else. but he had been the one to go looking for answers to cole, even though he probably didn’t have many. but he couldn’t help but to think that his love life had failed all along because he was looking for the right woman instead of… you know. he sighed as he looked at cole and bit his lower lip as he thought. “you don’t think…” he said, clearing his throat. “you don’t think he likes nancy? because apparently they’ve been hanging out lately. and you know, two years ago when eddie got pulled into… all of this.” he said, motioning towards the party and his group of friends. “i don’t know.” he said with a sigh, he wasn’t even sure what he was talking about anymore. but he was a bit relieved to hear cole say that eddie liked him. it made things easier, even if they were still hard. “i guess i just don’t want to scare him away like i do with most girls, you know? it’s just different with eddie, it feels… good.” he said, feeling almost as a weight got off his chest.
steve listened carefully as cole talked about his relationship with adam. they really knew how to keep a secret if steve hadn’t noticed, but then again, steve didn’t notice a lot of stuff. plus, he spent most of his time worried about basketball, swimming and his hair during high school. “i mean, at least you two got back together when he… came back.” he said, not sure what cole meant about the other being dead. he remembered him missing, but that seemed to be confusing a lot of people lately. he looked down at the ground at cole’s advice and nodded his head. “right… you’re right.” he said, although he still cared about what people thought. and he didn’t want people commenting on what he was doing.
xx.
Cole laughed, which was odd, given the situation. But the thought that he would ever swim in Lovers Lake, or anywhere else again? Was laughable. The part of his mind that was still trying to make sense of everything was increasingly concerned that Steve seemed just as lost as him. Shouldn’t Steve have more firsthand experience? Shouldn’t that help find an answer? But Cole pushed the thoughts away, shaking his head vehemently. “Yeah... I may never swim anywhere again, to be honest.” He shuddered, remembering the feeling of a hand or something around his ankle.
Though he could’ve laughed, Cole instead nodded at Steve’s fears. He remembered having the same thoughts about Adam, and the insane jealousy Cole felt when Chrissy and Adam were together. He and Steve were different though; Cole had never been with a girl, never even wanted to. Everyone figured out their shit at different paces, he supposed. “I’m 99% sure Eddie doesn’t like Nancy, Steve. Or... girls at all.” He said, hoping it could put Steve at ease. Cole smiled. He’d never expected to see Steve Harrington flustered over someone.
Cole couldn’t help the amused smile on his face. It was so surreal to be talking to Steve about this, and Cole didn’t take that lightly. It was just unexpected. “For whatever it’s worth... people don’t have to know right away. Or at all. It’s no one’s business but yours,” he shrugged. The only reason Chrissy had known was because Adam didn’t want to cheat on her; the only other person who knew was Max. And now Steve, obviously. “I won’t say anything,” he promised, giving Steve and encouraging smile.
stevehharringtcns:
.
steve smiled once cole accepted his beer, nodding his head as he took the bottle to his mouth and took a sip, looking at cole as he talked about the lake. letting out a chuckle, steve shrugged his shoulders slightly. “yeah, i haven’t exactly had the best experience with lover’s lake… trust me.” he said, his eyes widening a bit at the memory of being pulled down all the way to watergate and the demo-bats. the simple thought sending shivers down his spine, but he thought it probably wouldn’t be for the best if he shared that with cole. he didn’t want to sound crazy at that hour. “is adam okay?” he asked, remembering that the other had been with cole when something had grabbed them in the water, raising an eyebrow at cole for a few moments and then nodding his head.
once cole gave him the green light to ask the question, steve nodded his head slowly. cole would definitely know what to say, after all, he had been his first… experience with another guy. and steve trusted the other. after all, he had never told anyone, so there wasn’t a reason not to trust him. “oh, uh… we’re not together.” he said, closing his eyes momentarily as he tilted his head down and sighed. “it’s not even really a question, it’s just… i think eddie likes me. and i… kind of like him too. but i don’t know, i don’t know what to do. i’ve never been with… a guy. you know, besides you.” he said almost in a whisper. he really didn’t want people to listen to his trouble in his love life. “do you have any advice for that? i mean, you were… are together with adam, right?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.
xx.
Cole wasn’t surprised at Steve’s comment. Max had mentioned that Steve was one of the people who knew about the... spooky shit going on in Hawkins. Cole gave him a grim nod: “So I’ve heard.” Shrugging, he answered Steve’s question. “That’s the weird thing... he didn’t have any kind of mark. Just me. I think he’s shaken up, but we’ll be okay.” But he didn’t really want to talk about it. For some reason, Cole didn’t want answers anymore. He was afraid of what the answers would mean for him, for Adam, for Max, for... everyone. Wouldn’t it just be easier to stay out of its way and move on? Or was it wishful thinking?
He welcomed the change of topic to something lighter. Well, maybe it wasn’t lighter for Steve, but it wasn’t sea monsters and ghosts. Cole nodded at Steve’s explanation. The hint of a smile played on Cole’s lips at the mention of their hookup in the back of Steve’s car. He wondered if Eddie had told Steve about the mall. It didn’t matter. “I’ll be honest, the way you two were looking at each other by the beach? It definitely seems like he likes you. But I think I’m more sensitive to that... since I know you both, you know.” He paused for a moment, chewing on his lip. “I think you have options, but you’ll have to decide that with him. Like... if you want to be together, then do it. There’s a way, and there are plenty of people who won’t think a thing about it.”
Cole nodded, confirming Steve’s question. “Adam and I dated in high school. Secretly, obviously, except for a few people we really trusted. And then... well, he died. Or disappeared. Whatever. So that was that, which is why I... sort of, was with a few other people. Yourself included. But now that he’s back, yeah, we’re together.” He looked over at Steve, giving him a tender smile. “It’s worth whatever risk I was afraid of to be with the person I love. I know you and Eddie might not be there yet, but... to me, it’s worth the risk.”
After everyone had dispersed, Cole had slipped away into the cabin so he could change out of his wet swimsuit and decompress for a bit. He was actively trying not to think about whatever had been pulling him; based on what had happened at the graveyard and then what Max had told him about the Upside Down, he knew there was likely something else going on. But he also knew that whatever answers there were meant trouble for him and Adam, so it was easier to push the thoughts away.
Cole toweled off his hair and tossed the towel and wet clothes to the side when Steve approached him. A relieved smile filled Cole’s face, and he took the beer. “Yeah, that’s exactly what I need. Thanks,” he said, using the counter to pop the top off and taking a swig. “I’ve been better,” he admitted, gesturing in the general direction of the lake. “But... I’ve also been worse.” He knew it was a cryptic response, but he figured of all people, Steve would understand. Like, sure, maybe I’m being haunted by supernatural forces but at least I have my boyfriend.
Cole’s eyes gleamed with interest when Steve confessed his real reason for being here. Leaning against the countertop, Cole nodded. He tried to suppress his grin, but he had definitely noticed how Steve and Eddie were looking at each other earlier, and the curiosity was killing him. “Oh yeah? Shoot.” Cole said, welcoming the question. “And... good for you,” he tacked onto the end. Both Steve and Eddie were very attractive and genuinely good people, but Cole understood the trepidation of beginning a relationship that others might not approve of.

everything that had happened down at the shore had freaked out steve, to say the least. mostly because thinking two years back, steve had been under that lake, getting pulled into the upside down through the watergate. so, when both adam and cole got pulled down, steve’s immediate reaction was to never set foot inside the lake ever again. he couldn’t risk it again. he wouldn’t. he had made his way back to the cabin, looking around at everyone for a couple of moments until he spotted cole. maybe it was for the best if he asked how he was doing. approaching him slowly, steve grabbed two beers as he walked towards cole, offering one as a peace offering. “you look like you need this… you okay?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.
he looked at cole for a couple of moments, chewing on his bottom lip for a few seconds before he decided to say something. “also, can i ask you something?” he asked as he approached cole, looking around for a few moments. “about- about eddie?” he asked. he wasn’t sure what he was going to ask, but he was definitely… interested in eddie, if that wasn’t obvious already. he was sure that some people had started to notice.

with his hands gripping the steering wheel, steve stared at cole and thought about how he had almost ran him over. what was with people skateboarding in this town, anyway? he asked to himself as he looked at the other approaching his car. the memory didn’t take long to appear on steve’s mind as he was reminded of what the two had done in the backseat, but he shook it off his mind as he looked at cole as he leaned on the frame of his car. “you really should be careful when you’re skating that thing, you never know who’s behind the wheel… you’re lucky i saw you in time.” he warned, as he shook his head slowly and then motioned his head so the other could make his way inside the car.
“i wasn’t exactly offering a ride, but it’s better if i just drive you there. like i said, maybe next person won’t stop and then you’ll be left bleeding on the road.” he said, rolling his eyes slightly as he waited for cole to make his way inside of his car. steve didn’t mind driving other people around, in fact, he was used to. he was almost always the designated driver when it came to these type of events and it didn’t help that he was one of the few people in the group of people he knew that could actually drive. god forbid he would let max drive his car again, or anyone for that matter. “just get in, we can show up together.” he said with a nod.
xx
Cole put his right hand up as if he were reciting a pledge. "Right hand to God, it won't happen again, Officer Harrington," he promised, with a mischievous gleam in his eye. He knew Steve spent a lot of time with Dustin and Will and all those younger guys, maybe it had transformed him into the dad friend, or something. Anyways, calling a skateboard that thing aged Steve to at least forty in Cole's mind.
Without hesitation, Cole opened the passenger door and slid in, stashing that thing in the backseat. "Well, I appreciate it, really. What can I do to make it up to you?" Just barely, he resisted the urge to add a wink to the tail end of his question. Steve was being nice by offering a ride, and there was no need to torture him about it. "Sounds like half the town will be there. Anyone you're excited to see?" Cole asked, nonchalantly, though he was certainly fishing for information.
Cole had a bad habit of skating with his headphones in and forgetting about traffic laws. Today, he was lost in his Bowie tape-- Diamond Dogs, to be exact-- and completely missed the fact that he'd crossed from sidewalk to road. "You've got your mother in a whirl / she's not sure if you're a boy or girl" he sang along, unsure of how loud he was being until the obnoxious honk of a car interrupted his zen state. Planting a foot on the ground, Cole halted his skateboard and pulled the headphones down around his neck.
Turning around, Cole immediately recognized Steve Harrington's car. A smirk danced on Cole's lips upon the memory of what they did in steve's backseat. Making out in the back of a car was a bit juvenile, sure, but for Harrington? Cole couldn't object. Cole laughed at Steve's misplaced concern. The Wheeler barbecue. He had heard about it in town, of course, but didn't think it was his scene, exactly. But still, free food was free food. "I was going to stop by, yes," Cole lied, taking a few steps closer to the car and daring to lean on its frame. "You offering a ride?"
who: steve harrington & open
where: middle of the road
what was he doing? was he really about to go to a barbecue that was being thrown at the wheeler’s house? he had been invited, of course, but something didn’t feel right on just showing up there. how was he going to react when he saw nancy? and worst of all, how was she going to react? all of these thoughts were going through his mind as he drove - he should have been paying the attention to the road, but luckily he snapped out of his own head just in time to spot someone crossing the road right in front of his car. without even thinking, steve hit the brakes as hard as he could, his body leaning forward with the abrupt stop and before he knew it, he was honking the horn in protest, before sticking his head out of the window to get a better look at the person who was standing in front of his car.
“what the hell are you doing, dingus? you can’t just… walk in front of my car like that, you could have damaged it! i mean, you could have gotten hurt.” steve said, shaking his head as he ran a hand through his hair - both of them had been lucky, he thought to himself as he took a deep breath. “you going to the wheeler barbecue or what?” he asked, once it got awkward enough - they couldn’t just be there forever and the person didn’t seem to move, and steve definitely couldn’t run over them.
