in many ways the two of hem were so the same. both of them had been forced into this marriage without having any say in the matter, both feeling trapped with a stranger that they were simply forced to spend every day beside. with every word out of his mouth she forms more of an understanding of her husband, and the fact that his feelings about their marriage so closely resembled her own. her eyes settled on his own, her hands reaching up to cup his face within them before she draws him down into a kiss. it's soft and slow, a stark contrast to the heated kisses that they usually share. she remains close to him even after pulling away. "i know neither of us wanted this and we'd have much rather had a say in our own lives. but i'm your wife, i don't sleep around with other men, and i can't even remember the last time i flirted with someone else. but we can't move forward and stop acting out unless we stop resenting each other for something that was neither of our faults."
love wouldn't be the word to describe what they had, he wasn't sure he even liked her in the beginning. but after all this time he was trying, at least as much as he had been willing to go. he'd stopped testing the boundaries he'd been playing at the start of this marriage. and he'd walked away away when he was feeling angry and unreasonable. but then she was just as stubborn as him, as she grabbed him, he took another breath and tried to think about what he'd say. "because i couldn't, because you're a reminder of my lack of choice. that i'm living in a lie. that i have no agency in my own life, that now i dedicate myself a to a woman i don't know- but i've been loyal and yet...what do i get out of it? i still have people talking, judging, and making us the gossip. do you know what they tell the new people in court? to watch out for us like i'm some kind of joke or theatre show?!"
"i know, i would have much rather it had been your hands on me, but i didn't exactly have much say in the matter." it was almost endearing to see him upset over her, her frustration beginning to simmer down as she starts to understand why it was he was so displeased. "i didn't think you cared where i was. it is not as though you tell me as much." she sighs, watching the back of his head for a mere moment before she strides after him , quickly catching up to him when they reached the gardens and taking hold of his arm. "you're the most impossible man i've ever met, you know that? you've been making it pretty damn clear from the day we wed that you couldn't stand my presence, and now you're upset when i step out for a stroll?"
"I am upset and allowed to be, a man had his hand on my wife!" he was mad at the situation. "i am also upset that my wife just goes off, you could tell me. does that ever occur to you, to tell me things?" he said as his own hand ran through his hair. "now i need to get some fresh air," he said taking a deep breath. "and you are avoiding me, unless there's something you want you want from me," he said before walking past her to head for the balcony stairs.
"gwaine, please." she pinches the bridge of her nose, her headache still niggling at her temples and this conversation being the last thing that she wanted to have. "i just wanted some air, to go for a walk in the gardens or something. i was always going to come back inside to you." she drops her hand from her face, glare focussed in him as she crosses her arms. "please, for once, don't make this a bigger deal than it needs to be. i'm not avoiding you, alright?"
"i didn't say you're a common whore," he said pushing himself at the wall. "but the fact you are everywhere besides next to your husband is making us the topic of rumors." he knew that she wasn't seeking anyone out, that much they could agree on. but he was so easily influenced by the words of others that it tended to rattle him to his core. "i heard what you said to him, those words were the reason i'm not angry with you."
for a moment she merely stares at him, shocked by his reaction after he'd quiet literally come to her rescue. "you can not be serious right now." she scoffs, shaking her head. she doesn't know what she expected when it came to her husband, the two of them always seeming to butt heads. "i came out here to get some air because i have a headache and the oaf followed me out and wouldn't take the hint that i didn't want his company. what do you take me for, a common whore? did that look like i wanted his attention on me?"
"and you," he said walking past her, "you've been gone off with him for how long now, that i had to find you-" he could only assume she was flirting again. it wasn't the first time she'd done it to under his skin, "at least you had the sense to turn him away when you did." gwaine leaned against the wall as he looked her over. "and what am i supposed to do when everyone thinks i'm a fool for having to go after you- he's going to go in there say that you were fancying him and that i'm a fool."
she doesn't see him until gwaine's practically upon them, the anxiety in her chest easing the moment he gets involved. selaena watches wide eyed at the way gwaine reacts, the viscount grunting in pain at the way his hand is bent almost to the breaking point. her own hands move to straighten down her dress from where he rumpled it, amusement shining in her eyes at the rage gwaine spews. my apologies, my lord. she hears the viscount muttering as he pushes himself off the floor, storming off back into the ballroom while clutching his wrist. her gaze turns to gwaine then, heavy sigh leaving her lips. "what a vile pig. i love how he apologized to you and not the person he groped." her eyes roll, frown settling on her features. "thank you for that."
hearing her reaction was enough to get gwaine to be upset at the right person. and his feet moved fast as he turned the corner and grabbed the viscount by the wrist and bent it back. "unless you're new or a fool, then why risk your life by touching what's mine?" he said shoving the man into the wall making one of the paintings shake. "she's a married woman you fucking rake. if you're looking for a rutting, then make your way to a whore house."
the last thing she had been wanting when she stepped out for some air was some company and yet, the gods hadn't deemed her fit for such peace. the viscount had followed her after already having sent her a few looks throughout the evening, seemingly having wanted to chew her ear off. but the more time he spent around her, the more she becomes increasingly aware of how flirty he is being, how he seems to get closer to her, his fingers lingering on her arm and waist. when they stop near the entrance back into the ballroom once more, her eyes widen when he reaches out to stop her from going in, unaware of gwaine's presence as the viscount's hands move to grab her ass. "get your damn hands off me!"
Another event for the season, meant the two having to pretend to be a happy couple. Though at some point he had lost sight of the woman as they had ended up speaking and mingling with their own acquaintances and friends. So to overhear how the Viscount Clinton had followed after his wife made him see red and follow.
Gwaine and Selaena may not be the most functional or loving couple, but at the end of the day she was his wife. And he felt something for her, though he couldn't place it himself. She made him angry and defensive, but at the end of the day that was his wife. So for another man to assume that it would be okay to talk to her in such a manner, and to try and touch her as so had his blood boiling. And the man found himself at the door way and caught a glimpse of her face. @vulgcrzz
