Get Back Rewatch 55 Years On: Day 17
George is so sweet to put so much effort into helping Ringo write his song and to not ask for any kind of writing credit. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you, right? But also, I’d do that for Ringo too if I were him. Ringo deserves it for everything he’s given to that band and the little credit he’s received.

I do have to just include this here. From my Get Back book. I never heard, “was it sexually oriented?” on the nagra reels, but apparently that’s what Peter Jackson’s cleaned-up version gave him, and again, he was like, “hmm. Too gay.”
He’s known Heather for how long? Less than a year, right? But if somebody had showed me just this footage and told me he’d raised her from a newborn, I would not blink an eye. That kind of tired but fond interaction is exactly how a dad plays with his kid. And she’s climbing all over him and bossing him around like he’s never not been in her life. It’s beautiful.
And John, with his “are you going to eat them?” is the perfect sort of bad-example favorite uncle. The kind that would check her out of school when she’s older and go get her ears pierced when her dad had said she was too young.
Sorry, I promise I’m not just going to be thirsting over dad Paul this whole time. I have to just make one thing clear, and this is the only thing I’ll say on the subject and then I’m done. If a man is a 3 and a good dad, he’s a 10. Paul was already an 11, so I’m literally just done-for. Okay, I’ll shut up.
John and Paul doing their usual thing, only paying attention to each other. Talking about an Elvis gospel ending for Let it Be. George, smirking, stands up: and we’ll all kneel as you do it. If John had said it, Paul would be in stitches. But George said it, and he might as well have never opened his mouth for all the notice he gets. And it’s honestly heartbreaking, if you can take your eyes off of the insanity of John and Paul’s weird eye-contact, to watch George’s face go from excited at his own wit and hopeful for a laugh to just completely downcast. Twelve years of that. Twelve years.
Ringo, you’re an absolute saint. He’s being so sweet to Heather, even letting her mess with his symbols, and then Paul has the audacity to tell him to “keep it lighter.” Like. Paul. Do you think that maybe the fact that he’s got a five-year-old over there “helping” him might have anything to do with how the drums are coming out? Just a thought. Anyone else would at least have something to say about it. Ringo just sort of nods along but he looks SO tired.
TFW you’re inspiring the next generation of women to be loud and free and take up space.
“Dig it” is actually insane to me. I know I’m crazy, but remember those twin dreams they had about buried treasure when they first met? “If you want it, you can dig it up.” ???
When George and Paul just jump into harmonizing together when they’re talking about The Long and Winding Road arrangement? Their voices are like magic together. I wish they would’ve had George sing that part in the final thing, actually.
Get Back Narrative
I’ve received a couple of asks seeking clarification regarding my earlier post about how the Get Back documentary was redefining the Beatle narrative.
I’ll try to summarize.
1. Media articles like this, this and this regarding Ono’s presence. While it’s obvious that the band was heading toward dissolution with or without Ono’s presence, Ono’s continued presence in the studio, her unsolicited participation in band business (no, she didn’t just sit there and read, as some would claim), and her willingness to speak on John’s behalf is hardly exculpatory. Even Time magazine, which at least attempted a more considered analysis of the Beatle break-up era, claimed, after watching Get Back, that ‘Yoko’s presence was not a huge negative factor, and that none of the band members appear much bothered by her constant presence; they joke and talk with her comfortably”. This is a shocking claim, given that a) the documentary clearly depicts the deleterious effect of Yoko’s presence upon band members during the failed meeting at George’s house, and b) George, Paul, and Ringo have all gone on record regarding their discomfort in Ono’s presence and the disruptive nature of her involvement in band business.
(As an aside, I would also like to know in what workplace, no matter how creative or unorthodox, it would be acceptable to bring your lover or spouse to work everyday and insist that the presence of that person was absolutely benign.)
2. The exclusion of information which would provide context to behaviour, such as John and Yoko’s heroin addiction. “By the advent of the “Get Back” sessions, Ono openly joked about taking heroin being the couple’s form of exercise”). This was excluded in the Get Back documentary and, as a consequence, from mainstream media. Obviously the inclusion of this information would more accurately contexualize John’s behaviour in the band, including his insistence on Yoko’s presence.
Another compelling piece of information that was not included in the documentary was that Patti Harrison briefly left George around the time of George’s departure from the band. Since there was no mention of this event during filming, Peter Jackson decided not to share it, claiming he didn’t want to make any “moral judgements.” To whatever extent his brief estrangement from Patti affected George’s judgement we’ll never know (George didn’t even mention it in his diary of that day), but its exclusion in the documentary is regrettable.
3. Editorial Choices by the filmmaker. Peter Jackson has gone on record that he was not influenced by Ringo or Paul, and nor by Olivia or Yoko at any point in the making of the Get Back Documentary. And there’s no reason not to believe him. But: the Get Back documentary reflects his editorial choices–what he believed was important to leave in, and what he believed was acceptable to leave out. As Erin Torkelson Weber indicated in this earlier post, “the reality is that, without unrestricted access to the hundreds of hours of actual audio and visual tapes Hogg and Jackson used to make their films, fans are still being offered only someone else’s interpretation/vision/translation of the primary source material…so we have to rely on evidence that has already been framed and filtered.”
And that reality–that we are watching someone’s else’s version of the truth, has escaped mainstream media and a certain cohort of Beatle fans who either find the Get Back version of the Beatle break-up era more commensurate with their own beliefs, or simply don’t know any better.

Just like many of you, I too have been obsessively been re-watching Get Back to an unhealthy degree, and my hyper fixations (or coping mechanisms lol) usually manifest themselves as quick doodles! and I’ve also been obsessed with @m1ssunderstanding ‘s Get Back recap posts (they’re so in-depth and iconique check them out) , and I was wondering if y’all would be interested in seeing daily (or weekly lol) new doodles recapping each days of the documentary? 👀 I have a few already finished but it would be a fun lengthy project for me and I’m excited to potentially experiment with different styles and see how things evolve?

Ok I was typing my thought for part 2 and an hour in I lost everything so bear with me!
Synopsis of the first hour:
- poor Ringo was the only one who showed :(
- whoever thought to hide a mic in the flowerpot to hear the private conversation between John and Paul deserves a cookie. They actually did pretty good communicating with each other about their feelings
- they literally don’t know what to do without George. “Let’s go see George” “I was going anyway” “he’s gone to liverpool.”
- Ringo has a tiny symbol on his drum set and it makes me happy
- something LGBT just happened to that kid in the blue shirt
- the apple scruffs are so sweet Awh
- ok but when “im a bigger fan that you are” “well, do you want to fight about it?” I would be mad if I was Linda too
- AND WHEN PAUL SAID “stay out of it yoko” TO LINDA I
- I would’ve went home and started a fight with him
- John makes Paul laugh with one joke and then proceeds to take the next 5 minutes to keep making him laugh
- I was Happy when George returned he looks so good
- they took so much time putting the Apple studio together that they still ended up with just one week left to plan everything
- also Paul’s old tour set list on his bass..I think he still has it on there today

- if I was George, I would get irritated with Paul too
- Paul looks so good though

Get back really did make me feel sorry for George tho because although some of his issues could be self inflicted, overall it’s clear he felt both underestimated and overestimated simultaneously which must be frustrating because on one hand you want to and feel like you can contribute but you’re constantly getting shut down and on the other hand you feel like you’re being asked to do things that are waaay above your skill level but ur not being listened to.
All this being said I do think he was a bit checked out emotionally which didn’t make it easy for the others to communicate w/ him either like I keep thinking back to that moment where George is like “we need Eric Clapton” and John says “we need George Harrison.”
He just kinda disengaged bc he felt it was better to not try at all than try and fail and I can completely empathise with that but I wish he could see that John and Paul were trying to support him more than he thought yk
