Chop a magnet in two, and it becomes two smaller magnets. Slice again to make four. But the smaller magnets get, the more unstable they become; their magnetic fields tend to flip polarity from one moment to the next. Now, however, physicists have managed to create a stable magnet from a single atom.
The team, who published their work in Nature on 8 March1, used their single-atom magnets to make an atomic hard drive. The rewritable device, made from 2 such magnets, is able to store just 2 bits of data, but scaled-up systems could increase hard-drive storage density by 1,000 times, says Fabian Natterer, a physicist at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) in Lausanne, and author of the paper.
“It’s a landmark achievement,” says Sander Otte, a physicist at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. “Finally, magnetic stability has been demonstrated undeniably in a single atom.”

Author's Note: It is with heavy heart that I must inform you all that my hard drive went kaput earlier this week and that my ability to produce Cleanup Crew will be severely limited in the coming time. And if that telltale clicking noise it makes means anything, it probably means damage I can't afford to have professionals repair. Luckily not everything is lost. I have a few outlines of yet to come arcs still preserved and might be able to set ship back up before the week is out. But that's the optimistic interpretation. Maybe I'll have to go on hiatus for a time (I hope not, but no promises). If I do have to go on hiatus, I want to thank all of you who supported the comic for the past year. It's always encouraging to know people enjoyed my work enough to come back for more. So Thank You, one and all.
ok so I have this hard drive disc that I've been using as a coaster for a few years bc idk it looks cool and it's kinda funny
and like a day or 2 ago me and my gf were making a joke about reading the data on it so I put the disc in my mouth and spun it to like "scan" it or whatever and it only occurred to me that was a bad idea as she was also doing it afterwards bc
1. ive been using it as a coaster for a few years
2. I never sanitized it
3. my tongue felt weird
leading theory between us is that it gave us a bunch of microcuts on our tongues but we Do Not Know
if anyone has any clue what actually happened let me know please and. thankyou
