It originated in China. It is so rare today that only two known plants exist in the world โ€” one in a greenhouse in London and the other in a private garden in New Zealand.

Originally from China, this camellia-like flower was brought to the UK in 1804 by botanist John Middlemist. From there, the flower was named Middlemist Red. However, it has not been seen in nature for about 200 years.
