He had been down for days now, a breakdown as foreseeable as the weather.
He was at his breaking point, but made sure nobody knew. Of course, he knew that showing emotion isn’t something to be ashamed of regardless of one’s gender, but there was still something so humiliating about having to give in, about having to speak about his - what the formula one fans called it - “downfall”.
He didn’t want to give in because he hadn’t lost yet. He was still leading, still the one with better chances to win the championship, but all praise towards Norris, someone who’s supposed to be his friend first and rival second, hurt like hell.
So after yet another pole for Norris, even though the rest of the day went incredibly well for Max, he really needed to let it out. Finally.
He hurried off into his driver’s room, face all red and hands shaking. He didn’t even know himself if he felt anger or sadness right this moment, all he knew was that one more stupid question by a reckless reporter would give him the rest, and a scandal like that would only make things worse. Couldn’t people just let him do his damn sport and drive? Who gives a fuck about his relationship to his fellow drivers, who cares about who he thinks should be McLaren’s first driver? Was his opinion really that important?
As if that wasn’t enough already, he had to put up with insults and doubts from fans and even his own team as well. They want him to be flawless yet only ever remind him of his flaws.
Max paced around his room, droplets of sweat running down his cheek. He was fucking done with this shit. Why couldn’t they just let him do his damn job? All he signed up for was driving, and now he had to meet random celebrities he doesn’t even know the names of, he has to put with drama fueled up for nothing and the fia now also wants him to stop swearing as if he was some little kid. It was absolute bullshit to him.
His hands clenched into fists and the familiar taste of blood in his mouth was the only thing keeping him from biting down onto his lip even harder.
But then he heard a knock.
“Max? Can you open up the door?”
He recognized you immediately. Your voice was soft and tender like the one of an angel, making his heart flutter, yet he didn’t want you to see him like that.
You were one of Max’s new engineers, and he had never been so happy to see a new face in the Red Bull garage. It was unusual at first, but you two got along as if you’d known each other for forever already, making the separation of the private life and the work life harder than Max usually knows it to be.
You had noticed that Max has been on edge for a while now, especially today. Seeing him run off to his driver’s room only worried you more.
“Sorry, y/n. Can’t at the moment”
Maybe this wasn’t professional of you, and maybe you shouldn’t be standing in front of his door waiting for him to welcome you in, but maybe you were good enough friends for you to know that he shouldn’t be alone right now, even if he thinks differently.
And maybe you wanted nothing more than to finally be there for him like he was for you when you explained to him how weird it felt to work at a place you’ve never even known or seen from outside the tv before.
“Max, can you open up the door? Please? I’m worried”
And that was all he needed to hear. The last thing he wanted was to worry you over what is supposed to be meaningless stuff like this.
He knew you were the right person for him to see right now, and he also knew you wouldn’t judge him.
And so he finally opened the door, the familiar scent of your perfume immediately filling up his nose making him practically fall into your embrace. You slightly pushed the door with your foot so it would close by itself before burying your fingers in his hair while he breathed down your neck.
With your hands cradling his scalp and his arms tight around your waist, Max knew one thing for sure; he wanted you to stay.

just wanted to say i can’t follow back from my main, but hi!! i’d also love to have some f1 moots to talk about the races with (or well, moots in spirit) since there’s only so often i can ramble on to my IRLs haha. personally, i’m all for the China Chaos Era here and i’m kinda hoping we get some more action in the rain this weekend. Ik some people have been saying Max is good in the wet, but he seemed to be genuinely having a difficult time in sprint quali, so it could get exciting at the very front (hopium)

Me and you both.. i know some people who like F1 irl but it's always nice to have more!
Anyways it was so interesting to see him struggle during sprint quali because he didn't seem to have grip in some corners even though he was on a flying lap (so hypothetically the tyres should have been somewhat warm) but I'm not much of a engineering person so who knows. I'm a fan of his so obviously I wish him the best for the race but it was super interesting to see the shift after it started raining. If it rains during the race maybe we'll get to see more of a battle for the top3 which is always exciting :))
I swear people on skysport's instagram commenting under Max's win saying F1 is boring now probably didn't even watch the race because so much happened and yet they're all going "boo max is winning again, I cant believe I woke up at 6 for this, what a snooze fest" ???
Did we even watch the same race? If you focused on any of the actual racing you'd be surprised at how Verstappen winning all the time doesn't take away from the competition in other parts of the race. Yuki finished in the points, Sargeant did several overtakes crashed AND DIDN'T DNF (all with a repaired chassis btw), Alonso defended wonderfully, Leclerc stayed in P4 on a one pitstop strategy, Sainz has a 100% podium rate for every race he's started this year, etc etc etc. but apparently the race is boring because Max won again.
Is the podium all they focus on? Actually, is first place all they focus on? Because if that's it, then maybe F1 isn't the sport for you. It's always been like this. You want more variety in winners, go watch motogp or indycar, where the cars are almost identical and so drivers can compete without the cars being as big of a factor to their performance. But stop complaining about Max's dominance I am so sick and tired of hearing it.

I know that no one was surprised with Max's win today but as a community I think that we have to agknowledge that it was his 100th podium finish (youngest to achive this), 20th circuit to get a pole at, and he drove his 10,000th lap this weekend.

Being a woman in motorsports was tough. Being anything other than a rich white man was especially difficult in motorsports, but of course, you couldn’t complain at all—that’s what everyone expected from you. Still, you couldn’t hide how hard it was that no one took your opinions seriously. Everyone expected you to give up, and when you did, they’d say it was obvious because “this is a man’s world.” No one expected much from you, and the anxiety of making even the smallest mistake haunted you, fearing they’d find an excuse to blame you. Meanwhile, no matter how many mistakes your colleagues made, they were never judged the same way.
It was a blessing to be an engineer for a prestigious team like Red Bull, but it was also challenging. Even so, you could say one of the positives of working in Red Bull's garage was their star driver, Max Verstappen. Of course, your attraction to Max was personal; if anyone found out you liked him, the typical misogynistic comments your colleagues loved to make would surely follow, comments you chose to ignore for the sake of your peace of mind.
But Max wasn’t like that.
Max didn’t care that you liked him, because he liked you too. Away from the paddock, when no one was watching, he enjoyed being with you. He loved making you laugh with his dry humor, seeing your eyes light up when you talked about something you were passionate about, kissing you while holding your face in his hands, waking up next to you in the same bed.
Of course, it was all a secret. Besides the fact that you worked together, you were a woman working in his garage—it's pretty obvious why. But even though the request to keep the relationship a secret came from you, Max didn’t go out of his way to hide his affection for you in front of others. He brought you coffee every morning or hugged you before anyone else when he won a race and everyone crowded the podium to congratulate him. Small gestures like those began to stir rumors among the other engineers, but since no one confirmed anything, they remained just that—rumors.
You knew workplace gossip could be a little damaging for you, but as you always did with that type of comments, you simply ignored them and focused on working, letting the championship-winning car speak for itself.
It wasn’t until one evening, when you stayed late working and were heading to the hotel, that you passed by the break room and heard your colleagues talking and laughing. You didn’t stop to listen to them—you stopped because of Max, who was there with them.
“No, but seriously, Verstappen. All those hugs and looks between you and Y/N—you’ve already gotten something, haven’t you?” one of the engineers asked Max, making your breath hitch.
“Of course he has, mate,” another engineer replied. “How else do you think she’s gotten as far as she has?”
Max said nothing for a few seconds, and you hoped he might defend you, but then you heard him laugh.
“A big step for women in motorsports,” he said. His voice sounded a bit uneasy, as if he didn’t know how to respond, but he still said something. And it was the wrong thing to say.
It’s just a comment, you repeated to yourself mentally. It’s just a comment. It’s just a comment. Then why did it feel like your heart was breaking into a thousand pieces? Why did you feel ready to go to war and confront every man on the team for all the misogyny you’d endured in the garage? Why did you feel tears falling down your cheeks—not of sadness, but of rage? Why did you feel betrayed?
In the end, you didn’t do any of the things you’d imagined. You simply turned around and returned to your hotel room, just as you’d originally planned. That night, when Max knocked on your door, you ignored him completely, not even bothering to answer when he asked why you weren’t opening or if you were already asleep. You didn’t want to see his face or hear his voice.
In the end, you remembered that Max, as incredible as he might be, was still a man. That’s what they do.
