Are our own parents any different than the step mothers in the fairy tales?

Are Our Own Parents Any Different Than The Step Mothers In The Fairy Tales?

I was watching a documentary series on Netflix called ‘Myths and Monsters’. At a point where they were discussing about ‘The Grimm's Fairy Tales’, which is a book of collected folktales of Germany by the Grimm brothers, they said that the brothers had actually modified the stories to make it acceptable to the children. And one such particular change was that in the story of ‘Hansel and Gretel’. Though worldwide we all know that the siblings were a victim to the cruelty of their stepmother, the original story tells otherwise. They were rather abandoned in the woods by their poverty driven parents.

Now the questions come: Why did the brothers exchanged the real parents with a stepmother? If it was so unrealistic or unacceptable for the real parents to have abandoned their own children, why would the original story has them in the first place?

The series also gave an idea to that. Basically the myths we know have some really deep morals into it. They usually portray the inner dark nature of humans through the images of monsters. So, it is not unlikely to put the real parents’ images as some cruel versions of humans. Because we humans, are capable of such cruelty. It is embedded inside all of us.

But since the civilizations started, we are trying our best to tame such nature within ourselves. As if the wilderness inside us is considered a taboo in the modern world we live in. So, we made another character to drive away this from ourselves. In this case, it is the stepmother. The stepmother has become a disguise for all the dark parts of a parent. Hence, we see this character in almost every fairy tales in the place of a cruel guardian.

How each quote represents the characters

image

Jo Ye Beom is a modern and a free thinker. Despite making sexist jokes, he easily accepts his friends’ criticism. We also see that he is inconsistent to his own opinion. That’s why, he easily ratted their plans out to the prosecutor. But when his friends find it out, he changes his loyalty towards them. His quote directs that with time the laws are also modified, just like his character.

image

Isn’t it obvious! Kang Sol B will talk about it since plagiarism is a matter of ethics. When she has to confront about it, her ethics are being shaken. She has learned that not only did she break the law but also did something unethical.

image

Jeon Ye Seul’s abusive boyfriend is a son of someone who has a lot of followers in law. That gave him the advantage of doing unlawful acts such as violence and rape. He does them because he doesn’t fear the law, which he thinks will be easily taken care of by his father. So we see Ye Seul quoting about those fearless people being punished by law. Notice how she is pointing at the sky? That’s to refer to her asshole boyfriend, to whom she finally stood up to.

image

Min Bok Gi is just us. We get to see his character as a typical student. And let’s be honest, we’ve all said something like “we’re not machines” when we were being crushed by the amount of homework and assignments on us at some point. Bok Gi literally said that on behalf of all the students out there.

image

Seo Ji ho has a revengeful mentality. He has given up his whole life to study law just because he wants to avenge his father’s murderer. His quote suggests that treat people the way they have treated you.

image

Han Joon Hwi has a strong moral when it comes to justice. His uncle is his role model. That’s why he quoted something from his uncle instead of any other famous person, which again talks about judging fairly.

image

And finally the most chaotic character of the whole series, Kang Sol A. Who else will be able to break the chain but her? This indicates how she is not our regular legal minded person. She goes along with what she feels is right. And most importantly she doesn’t need to quote anything to prove how smart she is.

Why Joon Hwi hates his uncle?

image

I’ve been thinking about it lately. And here is my analysis of the matter.

Han Joon Hwi has the kind of character who empathizes with almost everyone. He tries to understand everyone’s point of view before judging them. This is proved throughout the series in different occasions. For instance, when he didn’t, at once, complain about Kang Sol B’s plagiarism and tried to find out the reason as to what lead her to do such a crime. He also didn’t mind when Seo Ji ho suspected him to be his uncle’s murderer.

If he possesses such a way of thinking, why was he so hard on his uncle about the bribe case before his death?

I think the real reason is that we tend to have a feeling that our parents are technically flawless entities. We don’t expect them to be wrong. Once we start seeing the flaws in them, it’s only natural that we cannot accept that. That’s why the teenagers are usually always in a bad term with their parents. Because that’s the first time a child starts to see their parents as a real human being.

To Joon Hwi, his uncle was like a father. He idolized him his whole life as a symbol of justice. But once that image was removed it was hard for even a sympathetic person like Joon Hwi to accept that. That’s why, he showed such strong hatred towards his uncle. But after his death, Joon Hwi actually came to question it himself that he should have rather asked his uncle as to why he did such things.

TV series I've watched in March 2022

image

The End of the F***ing World - Season 1 & 2 (2017-19)

- Check my previous review of season 1 here

- The season 2 will always be memorable to me because I've binge watched it with my cousin. We talked about it the whole day. I know, whenever I'll watch it again, I'll miss those moments.

- Season 2 also had some serious issues dealt with just like season 1. Bonnie's character hit close to home. I want to hug her. I also want to hug Alyssa and James. They've been through a lot.

image

Sweet Tooth (2021)

- A world slipped into chaos as a contagious virus breaks through and babies are born as part animals.

- This is the perfect time to watch this show with your family. It is quite emotional.

image

Our Planet (2019)

- From the grassland to the forest, from the ice covered world to the hot desert, from the fresh water to the high sea, this series shows varieties of habitats of the living beings of our beloved earth.

- This nature documentary is quite different than any other I've ever seen. It discusses the climate change in a way to make people actually worry about the situation. I highly recommend it to all of my followers.

- You may feel like to cry if you're an animal lover.

image

Strangers From Hell (2018)

- A small town boy moves to a residence of the city where he encounters many creepy strangers.

- I've never imagined this series would be that much deep. It is very detailed and the work is a piece of art. One of the best kdramas out there.

- It's very gruesome and violent. Definitely not going to recommend it to the faint hearted people.

- To be honest it gave me nightmares. I couldn't sleep properly at night for a whole week and only slept at daytime. My mind was totally wrecked.

image

The Tale of the Nine Tailed (2020)

- A nine tailed fox leaves his position as a forest deity to search for his reincarnated love.

- Though it is a fantasy and romance series, I mostly enjoyed the interaction between the gumiho brothers. And to be honest, I love Lee Rang <3

- Another best part of the series is the mentions of all the different sorts of mythical creatures. I love to know about mythologies of different countries.

image

Persona (2019)

- An anthology of short films with metaphorical meanings.

- Apart from the fact that each episode was directed by different directors with the same lead actress I don't want to say much about it. Watch it to find out. It's great BTW.

The End of the F***ing World (Season 1)- Review

The End Of The F***ing World (Season 1)- Review

We want to be in control of our lives. That's why we love shows like "The End of the Fucking World", where teenagers can finally leave their toxic households and go on the run.

Honestly, at first I found the plot stupid. The first episode, too, seemed pretty boring. The only reason I continued to watch was "Alex Lawther". I love him. Like, REALLY, love him. And the more it advanced, the more I liked it.

The best thing about the series is probably the cinematography and the music. They'll make you vibe and chill with it. You'll get some funny feelings too.

The End Of The F***ing World (Season 1)- Review

"The girl who felt too much and the boy who felt nothing."...The romance was cute. It builded slowly by the time. I appreciate that. It is almost like a modern day Romeo-Juliet. And honestly it couldn't have been better.

Sometimes it's hard to see through other people's eyes. Sometimes we misunderstand our parents. Sometimes we are misunderstood by them. Misunderstanding is a great flaw of life. It's like when life can't find any drama, it makes one.

Overall, the whole series was neat. But I wish they didn't make the second season. Because, though shocking, the ending was one of the best. I'm still gonna watch the second season though. Again, because I love Alex. <3

And also, I think, Alyssa looks super cute...
