I gotta let y’all know this because there isn’t enough content about boys being nice and caring on this website already.
In my Spanish class last year, we started doing these group activities where each pod of desks was a station. If you’ve been to public school, you get the drill. Each group had about 4 to 5 people and in my group I was the only girl in a group of three guys. Now, this wasn’t a problem because none of the guys in my Spanish were disrespectful; it was a pretty quiet class, but you can’t blame me for feeling a bit bummed out that I wasn’t in a group with anyone I talked to. About three stations in, we’d been cracking a few jokes and getting along well, everything was great. We get our worksheets and start scribbling down Spanish about our current topic at the time- sports. Our conversation swerves quickly into sports and I deem it their conversion now, because I don’t play any sports, and continue my worksheet. Then unexpectedly, the boy next to me invites me back into the discussion, asking if I played any sports. I told him something along the lines of, “No, I’m too short to play any sports” in a jokey voice, but still some truth to it- I’m 4’9.
The boys all continue their conversation and we move on to the next station. There’s five seats, so I sat at the head of the table, with the three guys sitting in front of me. The boy who’d asked me about playing sports is sitting to my right. A few minutes after sitting down, he leans over to me and whispers, “Do you really not do any sports because you think you’re too short?” I told him “sorta” because I said it, so I shouldn’t just tell him no. He continues kindly, “Cus’, you know, you don’t have to be tall for skiing.”
He cared so much about me possibly feeling insecure about my height and not involving myself because of it, that he offered a sport for me to play. That made my year I think. I hope he is doing great.
