"We Are Not Alone"

"We Are Not Alone"

Mixed media collage, 2022. At the time of making this piece, I was reading a book called Dark Eros, an analysis of Marquis de Sade. I think this mindset bled through in the collage, the prospect of masochism in choosing the theatrics of innocence, versus the self exploration of the libertine.

"my Troubles In Communication"

"my troubles in communication"

Mixed media collage, 2024. My experience with how it is talking with others. The ear, eye, and mouth are photos of my own parts. They are rendered in the struggle to work together in the communication process.

The brain is a hand grenade,

Words shoot-to-kill first,

I stutter or be silent-

Fire.

"Hypnagogic Gender Studies Moo-cow"

Mixed media, 2023. Inspired by the hypnagogic work of Salvador Dali, I decided to try my hand at sketching hypnagogic visions. These creatures came to me and made any point they had somewhat clear, what with their striking features. Dali used keys he'd drop on a loud saucer once he fell a sleep, but I just relied on my dog Günther to wake me.

"Holy Fire Face"

"Holy Fire Face"

Collage mosaic, 2021. Inspired by a re-watch of Holy Mountain, that time showing some friends who'd absolutely not have seen it on their own accord, but they did enjoy the experience ultimately. The particular scene that triggered this piece was when they sacrificed the mannequin doubles to the fire in the eyeball table.

"Message Intercepted (or Us)"

Mixed media collage, 2022. The mummy cat gives a piece of their ka to this skull that's wracked by chaos, being nothing more than a bubble that can't reach, the pages between the two torn.

"Across Lifetimes Untold, We Still Say Hello"

"Across Lifetimes Untold, We Still Say Hello"

This piece is inspired by a petroglyph in Peterborough, Ontario, c. 900-1100 CE. The First Nations people call them Kinomagewapkong, "The Teaching Rocks". To the Anishinaabe, the rock site is sacred, an area where spirits and the corporeal can meet. This figure really sticks out, scholars believe the top of their head is the Sun.

How the sun's light reflects upon the moon shining across our faces as we look up and connect, 2024.

"ᎤᏍᎨᏥᎸ ᎠᎵᏍᎩᏍᏗ" (usgetsilv alisgisdi - chicken-comb dance)

Mixed media, 2022. Playful sexual dimorphism, ritualized by the two-spirit. The two-spirit gyrates in the chicken-comb dance.

The language is Cherokee (which I'm part). The concept of the Two Spirit is pan-native-american, the term itself being formally coined near the end of the 20th century by queer indigenous activists and cultural preservationists.

"It'll Kill You In Time"

"It'll Kill You In Time"

Mixed media illustration, I was still working in education back then, a very frustrating position where I feel like I let down my students and the admins did everything to make a bad situation worse. Listened to Elliott Smith's Coming Up Roses to cool down as i sketched, the title is a line from that, 2022.

Mixed media collage, 2024

Palestinians kept the keys to their homes when they were forced into exile in 1948, the beginning of the Nakba that continues to this very day. The child clutches to the key, it illuminates a call for peace in a chaos of war, for all war's farce and spectation. That missile is the one signed by former US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, she signed off with a "Finish Them!" and "America ♥️ Israel". The graves are of Arlington, still fresh from one field to another. The twins are Benjamins. The countless-dead memorial markers are Covid deaths.
