Planting new forest will help save the Planer.
Trees are critical. Two hundred years ago, Haiti’s mountainous slopes were covered with dense forests, tropical hardwoods, fruit trees, and valuable crops. Since then, tree cover has decreased to ~30%. This massive deforestation is the result of a complex interplay of historic, economic, social, and ecological factors. These factors have caused drought and famine in one part of the world while causing environmental degradation in another.

It is in response to the strain on local agriculture and the dramatic loss of tree cover in Haiti that we have created Haiti Takes Root. HTR is a unique public-private coalition led by the Government of Haiti, whose goal is to reverse over 200 years of deforestation in-country. J/P HRO is a founding member of this coalition comprised of the Government of France, World Bank, and Parker Foundation. We believe that re-greening Haiti will take massive injection of new resources, more efficient programming, and research that brings innovative practices to the economic, energy, and environment sectors.
How are we helping?
We are partnering with ACCESO on farmer relief packages and sustainable agroforestry. ACCESO’s model is unique because farmers receiving material and technical support also receive a guarantee from ACCESO to buy their crops. The link between immediate relief and long-term sustainability - a focus for J/P - is thus clear.
The project will begin with an initial integration with Cavaillon, where we will co-finance:
a tree nursery/anchor farm;
the distribution of approximately 300 “farmer relief kits” containing seeds, seedlings, and tools; and,
provide farmer extension services and guaranteed purchase of crops over a 5-year period.
In partnership with American Red Cross we are working on urban planning and community mobilization for an urban greening initiative. After the 2010 earthquake, a spontaneous settlement emerged in Canaan and has since grown to become the fourth-largest city in Haiti with a population over 300,000. Two main activities were implemented as part of this objective of the project
The design, construction, and supervision of green public spaces.
The training and mobilization of Urban population on tree planting and protection.
What is our ultimate goal?
Promotion of environmentally sustainable agroforestry value chains
Preservation of critical protected areas
Reduction in use of unsustainable charcoal and firewood
With increased public and private partnerships, more efficient programming, and increased productivity of reforestation efforts, we will improve climate resilience, reduce environmental degradation, and increase rural livelihoods.

13.01.2017 I’m so proud of my little celery! She’s about a month old and grew from a stump leftover from cooking :) Let’s name her Cassia.

From the school strike outside Town Hall in Sydney. Look at all these amazing signs! Look at all these amazing people demanding a better future from our politicians! I’m so proud!
solving Climate Change is like a high school Group Project except with 7 billion people
• bring your own bags to the market
• always recycle (simple but very effective)
•use a menstrual cup (goddesses, TRUST me)
• use a reusable water bottle
• use the same towel more than once (i typically pick one towel and use it for my shower for a week instead of using a different one every day) EDIT: yes, a LOT of people use a different towel everyday, i’ve been getting a lot of comments about this..
• unplug everything (instead of just turning off the lamp, unplug it)
• if you see trash, pick it up
• go thrifting
• donate (clothes, furniture, shoes, etc.)
• skip the paper receipt and get it sent to your email instead
• buy local
• open the windows instead of using a/c
• fill your house with plants
Whenever I carry a big heavy duffel bag, I feel like a BrBa/BCS character delivering a load of cash from immoral criminal activity, while in reality I’m on a (much more) noble mission to get a month’s worth of recyclable waste to the not-local-enough recycling centre
We need more trees in suburban and urban areas. They create shade for people and habitat for wild life. In overdeveloped areas which are just flat Concrete and asphalt temperatures can get really high.
Also if ur going to have a lawn, please native grasses and plants because these give habitat to bees and native wildlife.
Plastic or fake grass can get hot enough to give third degree burns and is a danger to pets and children.
SO many wise words! Even the very strong lion, together with the maybe most famous national fairytale teller, has to give up. TOO many wise words! With sadness and regret, the indeed muscular lion and the also indeed very famous fairytale teller, just has to let go. MOST of the again indeed wise words are spilled all over the furniture and floor. Very few of the very wise words reaches the ears of the (again) indeed eagerly listening and mostly wise listeners. WHAT a pity! What a pool of wasted indeed wise words... It COULD be mistanken for wasted tears. Meanwhile, the indeed not so wise and not so listening scavengers, discreetly suck up the now indeed fluid wise words. Creeps out of the lion-and-fairytale-teller-room. Runs across the street, and sells the precious wise words in the indeed second-hand wise words-shop. One day a fairytale teller will collect some of the second-hand but still indeed wise words. Take them back across the street. For the indeed eagerly and wise listeners. And so, history and fairytale repeats itself. Wise words are again spilled into a pool, indeed looking like tears... That's recycling! VERY wise! #løves #åbenscene #løvesbogogvincafe #poetklubaarhus #fairytale #recycling #words #secondhand #wisewords #poetry #prose #whatever #repeating #aarhus #aplaceguardedbybothalionandthefamousfairytaletellertotryoutyourfirstwordsortrynewwordsorwaysbeforeanaudience (Usual one-off hashtag...) #udenfilter (Indeed!) #mantelmomento (her: Løves Bog og Vincafe)

Okay, I don’t have many followers but I want to say something all the same. Right now? We’re living on a planet tht is slowly being destroyed and for some reason everyone is ignoring it.
It feels like no matter what we do, people are just going to see us as crazy, idiots, silly kids. I’m sick of it.
The Dakota pipeline at Standing Rock leaked GALLONS of oil. EXACTLY what everyone said it would do. But rich capitalists seem to have the crazy idea that they can continue to exploit the Earth and all the people with it with zero consequences. And that crazy idea is RIGHT. We MADE it right, WE buy the tech they produce, WE forget to boycott and WE are the ones that don’t make a big enough impact.
We aren’t the villains, but there’s no kid with superpowers to save this dystopian nightmare world. In this book, the uprising begins with us.
SpaceX - Falcon 9 / SES-10 Mission patch. March 31, 2017
Falcon 9 carrying SES-10 satellite launch
SpaceX took a step into the future Thursday as it reused – for the first time – a recovered first stage of a previously-flown Falcon 9 rocket. Thursday’s mission, carrying the SES-10 communications satellite, lifted off from Pad 39A at Florida’s Kennedy Space Center Thursday 30 March at 18:27 local time (22:27 UTC) and once again landed the booster.
Falcon 9 launch of SES-10
Thursday’s mission made use Falcon 9 the second orbit-capable rocket – after the Space Shuttle – to achieve partial reusability. The Falcon 9 flew from Launch Complex 39A at the Kennedy Space Center, the same pad from which the Shuttle began eighty-two of its missions, including its first and final flights. Reusability has long been a key objective for SpaceX. Making the company’s first launch in March 2006, the small Falcon 1 vehicle carried a parachute system intended to bring its spent first stage back to Earth.

SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket deliver SES-10, a commercial communications satellite for SES, to a Geostationary Transfer Orbit (GTO). SES is a world-leading satellite operator, providing reliable and secure satellite communications solutions across the globe.

The SES-10 mission mark a historic milestone on the road to full and rapid reusability as the world’s first reflight of an orbital class rocket. Falcon 9’s first stage for the SES-10 mission previously supported the successful CRS-8 mission in April 2016. Stunning Bionic Insects Built From Computer Circuit Boards
UK-based artist Julie Alice Chappell (previously featured here) constructs stunning sculptures of insects with parts of vintage computers and video game systems for her taxonomic collection, called “Computer Component Bugs”. Using parts of Nintendo’s and DVD players, Chappell hopes to raise awareness of environmental waste.
Chappell’s goal is to create an aesthetically beautiful creation, which also offers a socio-political discourse on the reclaimed waste and the destruction of the natural world with art. Chappell’s bionic insects can be found on Etsy shop!
