Même si, au XVIIIe siècle, le bleu lui fait un moment concurrence dans ce rôle, le rouge demeure jusqu’à des dates très récentes la couleur de la théâtralité. Partout des salles sont entièrement habillées de rouge, du sol au plafond, des fauteuils aux rideaux, pour exprimer tout à la fois le caractère exceptionnel du lieu, et le plaisir que l’on éprouve à y être. Sans le rouge, la fête ne serait pas complète, le plaisir moins grand, le lieu plus ordinaire. Aujourd’hui, cette théâtralité du rouge tend à se faire plus discrète ou à se galvauder.
