It must be said that the Nurse Ratched of the ‘75 film had some villainous tendencies. She was condescending, unfair and used her patients as an excuse to keep things the way she liked them. She was on a power high, and most certainly had a sense of superiority. While her treatment of her patients was not quite abuse, medical abuse - especially that committed by nurses - is not acceptable and should not be ignored.

That said, her treatment of McMurphy was entirely justified, at least in my mind. McMurphy - who was known to not be mentally ill - was a misogynist and an arse, who never once respected any of the nurses (even before she gave him any reason to dislike her). I believe him to be entirely unsympathetic. This warped my watching experience, and caused me to actually enjoy when Mildred belittled him. A story that should have been the uplifting tale of disabled men rising up against their domineering nurse is watered down by how unlikable it’s protagonist is.

Just finished Ratched 2020, and I’m conflicted. I loved it for the most part, but Mildred was clearly a completely different character to that of the film.

So yes, Mildred Ratched is, most certainly, a villain. She just isn’t as bad as Michael Myers or Count Dracula or Hannibal Lecter, but she is a villain. The manner in which she is viewed by the original audience presents her actions as worse than they are, focusing on the more trivial - such as her emasculating of McMurphy - over her heinous manipulations of her actually disabled patients.

Once again, the patriarchy would present Mildred Ratched as a bitch, and a liar, rather than the cunning, selfish, horrible person that she is, and the depth that comes with it.

Hot Take: Mildred Ratched is not a villain. She’s just a woman in a predominantly male field prescribing to the accepted medical practices at the time. It was the treatments and McMurphy’s (Jack Nicholson) reckless endangerment of other patients that were the problem, not her.

Yes! Yes! I totally agree with this hot take 100% Especially in Milos’ version he mentioned how it would be more “evil” or “disturbing” if Ratched didn’t think that she was in the wrong, that she truly and wholly believed that what she was doing was intentional to help them. She was most certainly is a woman (a woman with immense status) working in a male dominated feild, running a male dominated ward. She certainly had to leave her own opinions, ideas, and parts of herself at the door on the Outside. She wants to make sure that her authority and station will not be questioned hence why she is seen as mechanical, stoic, and “evil”

She’s most certainly not that, perhaps, even with my own interpretation, Mildred Ratched might be inclined to keep some people under her control out of a sense of superiority but ultimately that superiority is acceptable as she is a successful woman (and when during the book and movie being published or premiered) there was the second wave feminist movement. Something I’m positive that Mildred would pay close attention too.

I understand why people are upset that Mildred and Gwen never had a sex scene, at least in season 1, and believe me I would have loved to see their relationship move to that level of intimacy and just to see how Mildred would have handled the situation. But I’ve been thinking and I think the reason that there wasn't a sex scene with them is because all of the sex scenes in the show were just that. Sex was just sex in the show there was no relationship between the characters doing it, and if there was the entire relationship was solely based on the sex they had. I think that with Mildred and Gwen they wanted their relationship to be more solid, be based more on the quiet intimacy the two shared, like the oyster scene or when they were kissing in bed but just ended with touching each others face in the bathroom. It was based on love, not sex.

If you’re still up for talking about Ratched, and cuz I know it’s something we talked about in passing, how do you feel about how the intimacy was handled?

I hope my reply answers this but now that I think about it, I would have liked to see more intimate scenes. To be fair we saw a bunch of hetero sex scenes and Finn pretty much had his dick out like??? it’s ryan m*rphy so I didn’t expect much anyway, but looking back we deserved more than whatever two second scene he did give us :/

sorry if this wasn’t what you meant. but how did you feel about it? 🤔

actually, would love to hear anyone’s thoughts on this!!

I hope I'm not the only one who is in love with the goldfinch's cast, I couldn't ask for any other better group of actors. Everyone I just so on point. I have to admit that (physically of course) I thought about some characters in different ways, for example, Hobie, but I don't have any complains, so I want to get my fangirl mode on:

Talking about Hobie: that man, Jeffrey, brings such an innocent and caring touch, just like the Hobie we know from the books, it's just too pure :(♡

I WANT TO TALK ABOUT NICOLE KIDMAN. Yes, THAT WOMAN IS ALL I EVER DREAMED OF MRS. BARBOUR OMG. She seems like a mature person and also looks gorgeous, she's Mrs. Barbour and I'm PROUD

My baby!, the precious!, Ashleigh Cummings!, as Pippa! OMg. Her performance on NOS4A2 is amazing, you should see it! It's an interesting but underrated show :( she plays Vic (the protagonist) AND SHE'S SO BADASS, but in tgf she's just a beautiful softie like my bby Pippa, I think she's going to do it amazingly :')

Talking about Pippa, I have to give a shoutout to Aimee Laurence! Unfortunately, I haven't seen a lot of her, but physically, I think she's great, I don't know if any of you remember, but when Theo sees for the first time Pippa at the museum, he obviously describes her. He says that yes, she's pretty, but there's something in her, the shape of her face, her eyes, the case she has... Of course he makes himself a lot of questions and Yaya... But I think that Aimee seems great, she has an interesting vibe and in the trailer the way they portray the shape of her face.. stunning.

Do I really have to talk about Finn Wolfhard? We know he's going to kill it, he's amazing, he is the young Boris we all could have imagined and he really seems to be into his role, he talked about how this was actually the first time he had to look for accents, and how to portrait a personality like Boris', I think he'll do great.

My sweetie pie ANEURIN I love him so much I don't- I don't even have to explain, I mean, didn't we all were like OMGDMIDHS when we first saw him talk in the last trailer? his other's roles were amazing and he's gonna come to slay in front of our faces. We don't deserve this man, we don't, I love him bye.

And, of course, my beloved Theo. I really really really love Theo, with all my heart, he's one of the most important things in my life (but we'll talk about it later, don't worry) and I only ask them to do him justice (and the movie). But Oakes???? This??? Really??

Just kidding, if you think I'm going to complain about my boy Oakes then you're wrong, VERY WRONG. At first, I was captivated by him, the way he looked in those clothes, I have so many expectations on him, He's the perfect guy for young Theo, I can't even try to think of any other young actor to be young Theo, he was the chosen one, and it's so disappointing to see a lot of people complaining because their favourite actor didn't get the role. I'm excited, I'm looking forward this kid Fegley to be Theo, He is the boy.

Ansel Elgort.. I saw a few people complaining at him because he didn't look like what they were expecting, but I think he's great, I know he's a good actor and Ansel and Oakes are pretty similar, even the Ansel himself said that he thinks they have a similar vibe and he can truly believe they both are the same person. I remember showing a friend them, and she was agreeing to similarity they have.

And besides that, Ansel also seems good (more than good) as an adult Theo!

Also, Nicky Torchia as Tom Cable, that's it.

Of course there are more actors and characters, but I needed to talk about them (Sarah as Paula?? SHE'S BEAUTIFUL I MEAN-) (and Ryan as Andy is so uwu). This cast, has my whole heart.

But what about you guys? What are your thoughts? I would like to read them, if annoying.

21. Ewan McGregor Movie Review: Down with Love (2003)

21. Ewan McGregor Movie Review: Down With Love (2003)

Genre: Comedy/Romance

Rating: PG-13

Director: Peyton Reed

Starring: Renée Zellweger, Ewan McGregor, Sarah Paulson, and David Hyde Pierce

Synopsis: Aspiring author, Barbara Novak, trades her small-town life for the Big Apple in order to promote her new book, "Down with Love." The book stirs up controversy with its message to help women achieve equality by saying no to love and yes to sex. When Catcher Block, resident playboy and New York's #1 journalist, is personally affected by this shift of the sexes, he plots to expose Barbara Novak as a fraud by getting her to fall in love with him.

Ewan Review: Ewan plays the character Catcher Block. Catcher is famous for being THE socialite of New York City. Women want him, men want to be him, and he's highly respected in his field as a journalist. Yes, life is perfect for him...until Barbara Novak shows up out of the blue and turns society on its head! His pride and reliance on the status quo can't bear to see this happen. So, he does what any logical man would do: wage a battle of the sexes! Ewan surprisingly speaks in his Scottish accent for this role! He also speaks in a southern accent which isn't any good, but I'm going to give him a pass this time because of the context. He has two shirtless scenes and LOTS of kissing scenes. I'm talking straight up making out, y'all. There are sex jokes galore and he gets to make his fair share of them. He doesn't have any sex scenes but he does have an implied erection scene. Lastly, he has a stellar song and dance number. His acting performance is incredible. I also just want to add that he is outlandishly handsome in this movie. I don't know how to explain it, especially because he's handsome in practically all his roles. He's a naturally handsome guy, but the way his attractiveness was amplified ten-fold in this movie did not go unnoticed by me. Please tell me if you understand what I'm talking about.

Screentime Percentage: Ewan is on screen for a grand total of 47/102 minutes making his SP 46%.

To Ewan or not to Ewan: Is the movie worth watching for Ewan in general? 1000% YES! Is it worth watching in general? Yes!

Where to Watch: "Down with Love" is available for rent on Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, and Google Play Movies and TV. You can watch it for free on soap2day.

Closing Thoughts: This movie is an homage to the sex comedies of the 1960s and is played out like one. It takes place in 1962 and the way it transports the audience back to that time is nothing short of fantastic! The costumes, editing, set design, manner of speech, soundtrack, everything down to the last detail was dripping in nostalgia and it was a blast! I feel the need to stress though that this is a SEX comedy. It's about sex. It's all the characters talk about, it's the driving force of the movie, and dirty jokes/sexual innuendos are the foundation of it. Just think it over before popping it in for family movie night.

I binge watched The Bear in 2 days and here are my thoughts on the whole SydCar romantic discourse :

Are they platonic, work -spouse soulmates who get each other on a molecular level? YES. Absolutely. They are practically the same people, it's just Sydney is better at managing her shit than Carmen. They manage to finish each other's creative thoughts about recipes and menus, they can keep each other in check and they respect each other. They sync on a level that is magical.

While, I personally, would prefer the platonic love between a man and a woman be explored quite wholesome-ly in this show, I also get why a lot of ppl are shipping them. They have insane, electric chemistry. So could they have a romantic relationship? sure. Anything can work there. They just fit together, that good. In any case we get more Sydney-Carmen interaction and I enjoy that immensely.

Also side note the cameos are fucking insane in this show and epi 6 of S2 blew my fucking mind. It was a fever dream with the most random famous actors ever and the most chaotic family dinner portrayed on tv.

The tatts on the men with biceps...help me lord 🥵

This show is fucking good.
