Satellites for Sale by NASA on The Commons Via Flickr: Astronaut Dale A. Gardner, having just completed the major portion of his second extravehicular activity (EVA) period in three days, holds up a "For Sale" sign referring to the two satellites, Palapa B-2 and Westar 6 that they retrieved from orbit after their Payload Assist Modules (PAM) failed to fire. Astronaut Joseph P. Allen IV, who also participated in the two EVAs, is reflected in Gardner's helmet visor. A portion of each of two recovered satellites is in the lower right corner, with Westar 6 nearer Discovery's aft. They made a limited number of these sets - a way of seeing & hearing all the images & recordings that are on the famous golden record that was sent on both Voyager 1 & Voyager 2. In case they ever encounter intelligent (cognitive ability) lifeforms.
Read by Carl Sagen, it includes greetings in earth’s languages- images of earth and much more.
This set is sealed & was never opened. Is stored in a cool/dry/dark safe place. The outer plastic shows signs of light shelf wear- but remains intact. The plastic & gold are very reflective so it was tricky to photograph- but see the photos. I found product images showing the contents.
This is heavy & has extra shipping costs, which are included in the price.

I'd like to see Explorer in his army uniform, even though he's supposed to be a 'civilian' satellite. I mean, they didn't almost name him 'Top Kick' for nothing! On an unrelated note, I do not support the War in Viet Nam!

The Explorer program was a pitch from the US Army, it competed directly with the Navy's Vanguard for the title of America's first satellite, and amongst its plethora of banging potential names also included "Highball", "Deal" and "Missile 29" (which I love). But having been mainly built by JPL citizens, I didn't give my personification of their first satellite much military flair—nor much of a closet for that matter—so this was a fun prompt to shake things up!
At first, the sheer amount of uniforms tore me on what would be best fit and that's JUST counting the 50s iterations, but then I thought it'd be a great moment to introduce his near-identical siblings who could just model in his place. Two birds, one stone! Meet 3 and 4. :-)
Sputnik 1 is 6x as heavy as Explorer. So, it is possible that he could carry him...
Oh, totally. But Sputnik's all about surprises, so why stop there?
(They live in low earth orbit with zero-G so it technically works both ways.)

History changed on October 4, 1957, when the Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik 1, the world's first artificial satellite. It was around the size of a beach ball, weighed 83.6 kg (183.9 pounds), and took about 98 minutes to orbit Earth on its elliptical path. This ushered in a new age of political, military, technological, and scientific developments, and although the Sputnik launch was a single event, it marked the start of the space age and the U.S.-U.S.S.R space race.
