Take one.
Micah is strong. More magic runs through his veins than any other student his age. He’s a little too human for Shadow Weaver’s tastes but she’s sure that it can be trained out of him. Then she doesn’t train it out of him fast enough.
She pays for that. Dearly.

Take two.
Catra is angry. She’s full of desperation and rage and Shadow weaver can understand that completely. She hopes at first that the anger can be turned into drive, into a need it be the best. It works, sort of. Shadow Weaver can see that she needs greatness like Shadow Weaver craves it, but she buries it. Buries it under her need for connection.
It’s pathetic, Shadow Weaver thinks. Pathetic and childish. She writes Catra off as a failure perhaps a little too early.

Take three.
Adora is perfect. Start to finish. She’s Shadow Weaver’s magnum opus. But she’s also not quite right. There’s not enough doubt in her for her to belong to Shadow Weaver, and if she doesn’t belong to Shadow Weaver then she can’t control her. And at that point, what is the child worth? Really?

Take four.
Glimmer is untrained and messy and has just had far too much responsibility thrust upon her for someone so young. It’s the perfect breeding ground for dependence. Her magic is just like Micah’s and Shadow Weaver is reminded that if she’d just had a little more time with the boy then he could have been exactly what she wanted. She’ll have that time with Glimmer, she thinks.
She’s wrong.

Take five.
There is no take five.
It’s probably a good thing.
Since joining rebellion there’s been a certain amount of adjustment for Adora. A lot of it is weirdly easy. She finds out that something she’s been taught since birth is factually incorrect, she rearranges her world view to incorporate this new information, she finds herself in agreement with her new people and everyone ends up happy.
Sometimes it’s not as easy.
“What do you mean you don’t see the problem?” Glimmer asks, waves of alarm rolling off her.
Adora looks to Bow in search of moral support but he looks just as scandalized as Glimmer. “I just don’t see what the big deal is! We’re in the middle of a war, you can’t just not kill people.” She looks at the two of them. “It’s not like I enjoy it.” she adds, and if she’s trying to convince herself more than Bow and Glimmer then it’s not like they need to know that.
“We don’t kill people.” Bow says haltingly. “That’s not how the rebellion works.”
“Then no wonder you guys are losing!” And finally Adora feels like she’s figured out something useful. “We can just tell everyone that lethal force is acceptable. We’ll be pushing the Horde back in no time.”
Adora says it all with a smile on her face which slowly drops when she realises that no one’s returning it. That fact alone is enough to stun her, Bow and Glimmer always return her smiles, but what makes it worse is that if she didn’t know better she might think it was pity on their faces.
“You wouldn’t think that if you hadn’t been raised in the Horde.” Glimmer says.
“Well duh. That doesn’t make it a bad thing though.”
Bow and Glimmer exchange a look before Bow steps forward and puts a supportive hand on Adora’s shoulder. “We’ll work on it.” he says and Adora thinks he might be talking about her mentality rather than the obvious flaws in the Rebellion’s strategy.
He says it kindly, like he’s being nice, and Glimmer is looking at Adora in clear agreement with him. It’s like they think she wasn’t capable of independent thought before she met them. That every belief she held while in the Horde must be bad because of where it came from. The feeling of their presence turns suffocating and Adora starts looking for an escape route.
For a moment she misses Catra with burning intensity. Now there’s someone who understands that when you fight you don’t hold anything back.
“I trained someone once.” Shadow Weaver says, in a rare moment where they aren’t actively fighting each other. “Before you. Before Adora.”
“What were they like?” Catra asks, unsure.
“Powerful.” Of course she says that first, it’s the only thing that really matters to her. She thinks on it a moment longer. “He was a decent student, but sometimes lacked motivation.”
It’s possibly the most personal information Catra has ever learned about about Shadow Weaver and she feels herself grow tense. It must be building to something, Catra has never known Shadow Weaver to do something without purpose.
“You are all the things in him that I hated.” she spits like the words are acid in her mouth and the sudden sharing mood makes more sense now. Hurting Catra is the one thing Shadow Weaver actually does do without purpose.”It’s important to me that you know that.”
Catra nods and keeps thinking about all the ways she can make everyone who’s ever hurt her feel like she does.

“I didn’t mean to leave you behind!” Adora cries as she dodges a punch. She’s so caught up in the rhythm of the fight that she almost misses the look of hurt on Catra’s face.
“Leave me behind?” she shouts, “Leave me behind!” She throws herself into a kick aimed at Adora’s face and Adora swats her away with the flat of her sword. “Like that would ever be enough for you!” Catra yells, “You’ll outlive me by centuries! No matter what I do, you get to watch me get old and weak and dead. You get to move on with your new friends and laugh until you forget I exist.”
Adora stares at her wide eyed as Catra pants from the exertion. She senses the other princesses come up to stand beside her and her thoughts of how utterly awful that must make Catra feel overshadow her relief for having more backup against the person that makes her weakest.
After staring at the group of them Catra shouts “Retreat!” to her troops, seeing that they’re outmatched. She turns to leave the battlefield with them but can’t seem to resist turning for a parting remark.
“Hope you enjoy eternity, princesses.” she snarls with all the nastiness that Adora knows she can muster which never used to be pointed at her.
As the Horde troops retreat they stand together in silence, attempting to present a united front against the enemy.
“I mean, she’s not wrong” Mermista whispers to whoever’s beside her. Adora sees Glimmer elbow her in the side in her periphery.
Adora watches her old family run away and thinks a lot about crying.

My best friend always said they dreamed of becoming a great hero, like the ones you hear about in stories. But they knew that it wasn’t something you could seek out, it had to be thrust upon you. Well, after years of villainous plotting, I’m ready to make my best friend’s dreams come true.

Pt. 3:
“Do you feel it too?” Adora asks Glimmer one day when she can’t hold it in any longer.
They’re eating dinner with Queen Angella and Bow. The table’s previous conversation, full of good humour and niceness, goes silent at her question.
“Feel what?” Glimmer asks carefully.
“Everything.” It’s not the right word for whatever it is but it’s the closest one she can think of. It makes Glimmer pause for a moment as she turns to look at Adora. Her gaze turns intense in a way that makes her look older, more like the Queen she might become one day.
“Only when I’m with you.” She says and Adora nods. It was sort of the answer she was expecting.
“Is it the same for the others?” Adora asks, because Glimmer isn’t the only person she knows who’s tied to the universe by chains of faith and stardust.
“Of course.”
A pause.
“I feel it all the time.” Adora says quietly.
Bow and Queen Angella exchange a look, half-knowing half-afraid. Glimmer just seems like she was expecting it though. Adora isn’t surprised by that, Glimmer is tied to the moonstone in a different way to her mother. Angella is connected to it in a way that’s full of magic and precision and order. Glimmer’s bonds with the moonstone are more hope and blood and chaos.
She-Ra is made of hope and blood and chaos. Adora might hate her for it if she hadn’t always been made of those things too.

It’s honestly ridiculous for her to be so floored by the sight of Catra in a suit.
Adora is the most powerful being in the universe. She’s made of starlight, her past lives span eons, Gods would bow to her and pray she stayed nice enough to deign that they live on.
But one look at Catra in that stupid suit and that stupid bow tie that isn’t even done up and that’s the whole point of them what the fuck Catra. One look at all of that and she’s practically incapacitated.
“Cat got your tongue?” leers Bow.
“Fuck you.” Adora says, more seriously than she meant to. Bow takes a step back, surprised at her vehemence, but seems to get it because he touches her arm and whispers a quick ‘sorry’ as he leaves.
She tries to brace herself for Catra’s approach. It doesn’t work. When she purrs “Hey Adora” in that smug voice she does when she’s feeling powerful Adora can’t help her face scrunching up in annoyance the way it always does. It makes Catra laugh which just makes Adora’s face scrunch up even more and the worst part is that she still kind of likes the sound.
Adora prays for the stars to give her strength. It doesn’t work. In fact, she thinks they might be laughing at her too.

From the very first time Adora transforms she feels a power sing through her and knows it will be there till the day she dies.
Then she realises that that might not be true, because maybe she can’t die any more. The concept of mortality seems small now. Something for lesser people, the ones she can squash under her heel like ants. Eternity doesn’t seem like such a long time with the power of the hidden stars that are as old as forever humming through her veins.
She wonders if she should mention any of this to her new friends, how even when she isn’t transformed she can feel the universe revolving around her. She thinks back to Catra turning away from her (because somehow somehow somehow Catra just knew). Instead she just hopes that the life she could spend with these people might last an eternity all on its own.
