Komahina from Danganronpa...

I can see the appeal but it just doesn't stir anything within me, and I have a slight distain for it since anytime I tried to consume Hajime content I always saw it.

No hate to Komahina fans though, live your truth 🧡

I've never understood the term "toxic fandom". It's weird because there are a lot of situations where it's appropriate, but people tend to use it when someone draws something spicy or something when they could use it on the countless times someone has tried to off themself. But I just. I'm not here to talk about that. Having been in the 3 musketeers of toxic fandoms (Undertale, MLP, Hellaverse) I've noticed a few strange phenomenons when it comes to ships. In each of these fandoms they have "those ships". Ships so popular that you can't even search one character without seeing the ship. Ships where the fans will give it 10000000/10 with no explanation other than "it's cute". Ships that if you dare not ship people will question you and insult you for daring to ship something else. Every ship has a case of this in some way, but some have it worse. So bad that I give it its own term.

I like to call this Umbrella Shipping

I plan to go in deeper discussion on this, but first, I wanna ask. What Umbrella Ship do YOU have beef with. Do you think it's a problem?

Results time!

It seems like the most popular option is "Fav Miles, prefer top!Phoenix/bottom!Miles" at 22.8%, or 26.1% if I adjust the numbers to remove the "see results" option. And the least popular option is "Fav Miles, prefer top!Miles/bottom!Phoenix" at 5.5%, or 6.3% if adjusted. (Please let my math be correct, it's not my strong suit). It seems like Miles fans have a clearer preference than Phoenix fans.

The reason I made this poll was to test the theory that people tend to prefer their favorite characters as the bottom in a m/m pairing. The data suggests that this could be the case, however we can only conclude correlation and not causation from these results.

Feel free to explain your reasons in the tags! (I'm very curious)

What I mean by a character being "whumped" is them being on the receiving end of hurt/comfort.

Kind of a follow up to my last poll: here. I removed the "no preference" options because I'm forcing you guys to choose >:) Feel free to explain your reasons in the tags/comments!

That actually gives me some better context thank you! Honestly I do think it’s down to perspective and people’s personal favorite tropes versus tropes they don’t like. Like what you’re willing to put up with in the media you consume and for everyone it’s different.

Like I’ll be honest, I think Akechi is one of the best written characters in the game. However I also don’t really like his kind of characters. And that’s okie I recognize he just isn’t really a character I enjoy that much it’s down to personal taste.

And I think it’s the same with shuake/akeshu. It’s down to what you enjoy and I personally like clear cut and wholesome ships more than the complicated not so clear ones. Honestly my biggest confusion with the ship really is just how Futaba and Haru would feel about it. But I guess that’s the point, the relationship is complicated. I just sometimes wish there was some more emphasis on it to highlight how that is inherently a bit of a problem (like I feel like most people wouldn’t want to be friends with someone who is dating someone that really hurt them, even if it wasn’t intended).

No hard feelings though thanks! Your post did give me some better insight! I am getting it a little better now haha

I don’t get akeshu / shuake at all.

Like I get it from a typical “fandom loves the enemies to lovers trope” perspective but in all honesty I don’t get the insane brainrot the persona 5 fandom has for this ship.

Like do I think Joker cares for Akechi? Yes.

Do I think he was genuinely conflicted/tempted by Maruki’s ultimatum? Yes.

Do I think they have a genuine relationship and see a lot of themselves in each other and actually somewhat understand each other? Yes.

That being said, I really don’t see how anyone can look past the fact that Akechi tried to kill Joker. And okie fine enemies to lovers, fandom’s favorite ship aside, I don’t see how Joker can actually want a full on relationship (like romantic) with this dude when Futaba, Sojiro, and Haru are like right there?

This may just be me but I reallllllllly wouldn’t be friends with someone who is friends (hell forget even in a romantic relationship) with someone who horribly hurt me.

And I don’t think Joker loves Akechi more than Futaba, Sojiro, or Haru. Especially Sojiro and Futaba. Those two are like his family, and Akechi is responsible for their suffering.

Like… it’s kind of one or the other. Joker can’t be friends/dating Akechi without horribly betraying Futaba, Sojiro, and Haru. That’s just how I see it (but I’m open to hearing other perspectives!)
