Dick is the type of person to yell “Bruce catch!” And let go of his grapple while swinging full speed.

When Dick eventually left behind was fired from Robin he still continued swinging at Bruce, and Bruce never failed to catch him.

And when Jason became Robin, and Dick got mostly past Bruce giving his name to the kid. Dick told Jason stories about it, never showing him except once, when he and Bruce were on slightly better terms. Dick did it more forceful than usual.

It took Jason a month or two as Robin before he was comfortable enough with Bruce to trust him to catch him.

For Tim, they didn’t show him. But he’d picked it up from seeing Dick and Jason do it. The first time he did it, it damn near gave Bruce and Dick a heart attack.

For the short period Steph was Robin see never got the chance. But you bet she remedied that when she became Spoiler.

Damian was more hesitant. Always worried it would be a trick. Because it was an easy way to ‘accidentally’ cause him harm. But after seeing Dick, Tim, and Steph do it and be caught every time, he eventually gave in. You’d never catch him admitting it but that first moment wrapped in his Father’s arms as Bruce caught him for the first time, and the small smile Bruce gave him when he stepped away, that is one of his favorite memories.

Cause Bruce would always be there to catch him.

He couldn’t catch Jason, never again.

Stephanie Brown ACTUALLY having the character arc that fanon pretends Jason Todd had (plus a defence of canon Jason)

What I'm really saying is that Stephanie Brown is underappreciated, Jason Todd is often misinterpreted, and, though it should go without saying, ignoring canon is poor media literacy. So let's actually analyse canon and get to the bottom of what the stories are trying to say and how they use their characters to tell this, as opposed to just which character should we stan.

I'm arguing that Stephanie Brown's story actually features a redemption arc that sees her transform from a violent, almost murderous teenager into the most unwaveringly hopeful of heroes and that Jason's story is about a villain who we're meant to empathise with to expose the cracks in the Batman's heroic facade; a Frankenstein's monster if you will. Here's a numbered list:

Stephanie Brown ACTUALLY Having The Character Arc That Fanon Pretends Jason Todd Had (plus A Defence

Part 1: Outgrowing Violence, Anger and Murder

A big part of Stephanie Brown's growth in canon is her learning not to kill or use excessive force. But it's not as simple as just killing is wrong, don't question it.

Let's begin with the narrative's relationship to violence, anger and murder. Why doesn't Batman kill? Because "[those] who [fight] with monsters might take care lest [they] thereby become a monster. And if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you". If he kills, he's playing god, choosing who gets to live and die. No one deserves that kind of absolute power and absolute power also corrupts. Batman doesn't want to lose sight of himself or his cause. Deliberate murder is treated VERY negatively in the Batman mythos.

Enter Stephanie Brown.

Stephanie was a working class latchkey kid who grew up on the wrong side of the tracks. She had an abusive, criminal father, who was in and out of jail, and a mother struggling with addiction, who Steph became a carer for at just 15. Steph also became pregnant with the child of her horrible ex. At 16, she gave birth to that child and had to give her up for adoption. Steph is also a survivor.

The world was never kind to Steph and left this teenager with a hell of a lot of bitterness and rage which her vigilante career became an outlet for. You can tell by the way she fights since Steph fights DIRTY; she'll tug hair and spit in your eyes and strike below the belt and catch a kick to twist your ankle and dislodge your already broken nose. On the one hand; the narrative tells us Steph is resourceful. She's 5'5", 130 lb and has zero powers, but can always find an opening even when going up against Gotham's grizzliest. It's telling that quick thinking, savviness and spontaneity become her thing when she becomes Batgirl; Steph is the wild card. On the other hand, she was a real diamond in the rough and a complete loose canon. In her first arc, it's Batman who stops her from making the biggest mistake of her life; killing her dad. To deliberately kill; to play god, is to lose yourself, remember. Her first arc is about not being defined by who your parents are and about not giving up on yourself. Batman basically tells her, there's hope for you yet Stephanie Brown, by getting her to spare her dad. And she does. And so began her superhero career.

Nonetheless, it's never that simple. Steph is still a bitter, angry teenager, no matter how many jokes she cracks. It becomes a personal crusade when she, now Robin, discovers that The Penguin is using children as runners. It takes Cassandra Cain to stop her from inflicting anything she may regret.

Stephanie Brown ACTUALLY Having The Character Arc That Fanon Pretends Jason Todd Had (plus A Defence
Stephanie Brown ACTUALLY Having The Character Arc That Fanon Pretends Jason Todd Had (plus A Defence

The narrative wants to show us how cruel the world can be and that it isn't black and white, either. The story ends with an angry Stephanie lamenting "why". It's a "why" she is asking herself too. Why does she do what she does? And it informs us that she, and maybe us the reader too, still have a lot to learn. Murder's not the answer but what is?

Stephanie Brown ACTUALLY Having The Character Arc That Fanon Pretends Jason Todd Had (plus A Defence
Stephanie Brown ACTUALLY Having The Character Arc That Fanon Pretends Jason Todd Had (plus A Defence

Stephanie later saves Bruce by almost murdering serial killer Victor Zsasz. Bruce reprimands her and she cries, quite honestly, "I don't get it, I really don't", following on from where we left off in Batgirl. "There are always other options than to kill" asserts Bruce, forget not being on the same page, they're reading different books. The thesis of the story is what Bruce should have told Steph when she was an angry 15 year old about to murder her dad; "[those] who [fight] with monsters might take care lest [they] thereby become a monster". The world's cruel, Steph, but that doesn't mean you have to be too. "Are you firing me?" "No, I'm teaching you".

Stephanie Brown ACTUALLY Having The Character Arc That Fanon Pretends Jason Todd Had (plus A Defence

Over 2 years down the line, an around 19 year old Stephanie, establishing herself as the new, hoping-inspiring Batgirl, is now teaching a brash Damian Wayne what she's learned.

"To murder or not to murder" is just a plot device to the themes of overcoming your own anger at the world's cruelty to contribute good, coming to terms with shades of grey, not giving up on yourself and staying hopeful in the face of adversity and horror. These are Stephanie's arcs and as a consequence, she goes from would-be-murderer to Gotham's cheeriest caped crusader.

Part 2: Double Standards and Second Chances

Another huge part of Stephanie's story is her overcoming double standards and doubters, to earn her own second chances. Her resurrection and rise to the role of Batgirl were choices made to hammer home this theme; it's never too late to turn things around.

There's some juicy metatext to analyse here too. DC editorial's treatment of Stephanie during War Games was horrific and panned by both fans and writers. To reperate for these harms, Steph was retconned back to life and then made Batgirl during Batman: Reborn. Here's a quote by Batgirl (2009) author Bryan Q. Miller on what his run aimed to bring out of Steph:

Stephanie Brown ACTUALLY Having The Character Arc That Fanon Pretends Jason Todd Had (plus A Defence

The whole point of Stephanie's resurrection and take over of the Batgirl title was to give her a redemption arc.

In text, Stephanie was unfairly treated too, notwithstanding that she was brash and had a massive violent streak in her Spoiler and Robin days. Tim Drake constantly condescends her and tells her to give up vigilante life, even though she was ALWAYS a match for Tim according to Convergence: Batgirl. Cassandra Cain constantly underestimates Steph. Bruce Wayne tells his allies to cut off ties with Steph and then later fires her as Robin for DISOBEYING HIM as if that's not the first thing Dick Grayson ever did as Robin. Barbara Gordon tells Steph she has a death wish. Dick deems Steph too reckless (moments before he resurrects a zombie Batman). And Damian is an entitled brat who gives her a hard time for no reason. Everyone doubts Stephanie and it generally says more about the doubter than it does Stephanie.

Stephanie Brown ACTUALLY Having The Character Arc That Fanon Pretends Jason Todd Had (plus A Defence

Stephanie was never great with authority or criticism so she still went out there and earned her second chance. And it felt rewarding when her doubters came around too.

Stephanie Brown ACTUALLY Having The Character Arc That Fanon Pretends Jason Todd Had (plus A Defence

Stephanie was brought back from the dead to be redeemed and man did she take that chance!

Part 3: What is Jason Todd's Story Meant to Tell Us and My Defence of Canon Jason

Jason Todd returns from the dead as a ghost of Batman's past; he is the living embodiment of Batman's greatest mistake who couldn't stay buried and is back to haunt him. He's a character we are meant to empathise with but he's a villain nonetheless. He's not irredeemable but for the most part his story is not really about redemption. Succinctly, it revolves around the idea that "we are each our own devil, and we make this world our hell” to quote Oscar Wilde.

When we first meet the resurrected Jason, he's a cold-blooded murderer who's slinging guns and using The Joker's old moniker. These choices are made to emphasise that he went down the wrong path; he's breaking Batman's "don't play god" rule and his actions become eerily closer to those of the Clown Prince of Crime than Batman's. In fact Nightwing and Batman spend some quality time together in the next two issues because Nightwing is the foil to the Red Hood; he's what Bruce considers his greatest success. Remember that thing about "those who [fight] with monsters might take care lest [they] thereby become a monster"? Well Jason DID become a monster. And if he's the monster, then Bruce Wayne is Frankenstein.

Stephanie Brown ACTUALLY Having The Character Arc That Fanon Pretends Jason Todd Had (plus A Defence
Stephanie Brown ACTUALLY Having The Character Arc That Fanon Pretends Jason Todd Had (plus A Defence

We're not supposed to think "yes, kill the The Joker, Jason", we're supposed to think "good god, please Jason, it's not too late to turn your life around". Here's Dick and Jason being the exact opposite of each other, an issue apart.

Stephanie Brown ACTUALLY Having The Character Arc That Fanon Pretends Jason Todd Had (plus A Defence
Stephanie Brown ACTUALLY Having The Character Arc That Fanon Pretends Jason Todd Had (plus A Defence

So what was Jason's villainous return trying to say? For one, that people are the products of their circumstance, lest we forget Jason was once an eager and studious Robin who just wanted to be part of something greater when life, but specifically Bruce, sent him awry. This is also a story about Bruce which tells us says that our mistakes have consequences that don't stay buried, and that we will always be forced to reckon with our histories or it becomes everyone's problem. This next panel shows this best. All of Jason's killing and torture and fear-spreading and chaos does not come down to some "murder or not to murder" debate, it comes down to his relationship with Bruce. He is the monster that Frankenstein created who's back to haunt him and no one is safe.

Stephanie Brown ACTUALLY Having The Character Arc That Fanon Pretends Jason Todd Had (plus A Defence

Jason's initial Red Hood arcs were never supposed to pose the question "should Batman kill The Joker or not?". The answer is no and always has been. They are supposed to show us how Bruce's poor fatherhood of and partnership with Jason Todd led to all this horror. And Bruce can't turn back the clock, he has to reckon with the consequences of his actions in the present or more people will get hurt. It's significant that these first arcs don't end with Jason returning to the manor and seeking help surrounded by family.

We then see Jason and his issues with Bruce threaten the lives of others like when he beat Tim half to death twice, tried to blow up Mia Dearden and then tried to become a murderous, gun-touting Batman after Bruce's "death".

Once Dick Grayson becomes Batman, the narrative sheds a bit more light on how Bruce's Frankenstein created a monster in Jason; Bruce wanted Jason to be another Dick Grayson.

Stephanie Brown ACTUALLY Having The Character Arc That Fanon Pretends Jason Todd Had (plus A Defence
Stephanie Brown ACTUALLY Having The Character Arc That Fanon Pretends Jason Todd Had (plus A Defence

The red hair is a perfect metaphor. Jason is naturally red-haired and he is now balding because Bruce made him dye his hair black so he'd look like Dick as Robin. That sums it up for me. Bruce really created his own demon here and Dick, as the new Batman, is trying to make amends with the sins of the Batman's past. Jason's a great choice for a Dick Grayson villain because of their histories, considering Dick Grayson is the legacy Batman.

Stephanie Brown ACTUALLY Having The Character Arc That Fanon Pretends Jason Todd Had (plus A Defence
Stephanie Brown ACTUALLY Having The Character Arc That Fanon Pretends Jason Todd Had (plus A Defence

"I tried really hard to be what batman wanted me to be...which is you." Jason tells Dick.

That line is so painful and way more recognisable and relatable than anything fanon has produced.

"But this world...this dirty, twisted, cruel and ugly dungheap had...other plans for me."

Look no further, this is who Jason Todd is.

That's a powerful story if you ask me, and this is why I like Jason Todd as a character; a villain I pity deeply, who is portrayed as a product of their circumstances without diminishing their agency and who makes me see the cracks in the hero's facade because they are the monster our "hero" created. He's also a very nuanced foil to the ever-shining light that is Dick Grayson. The appeal to Mary Shelley's Frankenstein isn't that the monster murdered people. I also would never swap canon Jason out for, I dunno, Wayne Family Adventures Jason who's the amalgamation of 3 or 4 common fanon tropes. This is my two cents.

Peter has no idea Steph and Tim aren’t exclusive

So when he walks past Tim in an alcove at Gotham U cozied up awfully close with someone else he doesn’t initially say anything (but by god he’s judging) and when he makes eye contact with him a few days later sucking face with a different girl at the library cafe, Peter makes his disapproval KNOWN.

Missions at Mt Justice don’t change and he doesn’t ask to switch teams or anything drastic - but there’s next to no banter between them anymore. No silly games or witty jokes - Peter just clocks in and clocks the fuck out now. And no can even say anything because - he responds! And he still works just fine when they’re paired up. He also listens / replies when spoken to - he just isn’t friendly anymore.

In fact - he totally shuts down any conversation Tim joins and gets the coldest look on his face which is BAFFLES EVERYONE???

Because holy shit Peter doesn’t like you?? Do you kick puppies for a living - what the hell???

They’ve never really seen Peter mad before. Annoyed - sure. But this ice out is a new one and honestly kind of scary.

And Tim is ???? So confused. Because he has no idea what Peter’s upset about since he hadn’t actually noticed him that day.

Now - Jason obviously finds this hilarious because hell yeah fuck that guy (he knows they’re open he’s just saying choosing to say NOTHING).

Dick doesn’t know what to make of it because he’s pretty sure they were open? But now he’s doubting it because weren’t they just celebrating their anniversary?? (Zatanna mentioned it in passing but his ass was naaawt listening 😭).

No one’s told Damian why Peter doesn’t like Tim right now but he doesn’t care and finds the sudden switch gratifying (he never liked the guy anyway).

Artemis was concerned about the team’s harmony at first but has since decided to stay out of it since it hasn’t affected their work.

But Wally’s been avoiding him too?? Because someone told him a mutated version of the rumour and he now believes Tim tried to bribe Peter to hide his cheating.

[Wally: it’s all alleged but man, who knew he could be such a douchebag?

Roy: (scoffing) it’s a bitch move, that’s for sure.

Jason, who is now hearing a frankensteined version of his own rumour repeated back to him: oh yeah…it’s just - crazy. Really. But you know I heard….]

Everything comes to a head when the rumour gets back to Steph after she comes back from a covert mission so this is literally the intervention that follows:

Artemis: (holding the bridge of her nose) So. We’re gathered here today because I feel there’s been a bit of a misunderstanding.

Tim: there’s no misunderstanding. Spidershit over here’s been spreading FALSE rumours about me-

Peter: I SAW YOU WITH MY OWN EYES YOU PATHOLOGICAL LYING PEICE OF-

TIM: YOU’RE THE MANIPULATIVE LOS-

Steph: shut up! Both of you!

(Silence. Jason coughs)

Artemis: Now does anyone have anything to say before we start? (Sighing) Yes, Pete?

Peter: I get why Steph, Tim and Wally are here. But why’d you call Jason too?

Jason: (Standing up, dusting his pants) he’s right, there’s been a mix up.

Artemis: Sit down Jason - (gestures haphazardly at Wally) just - tell them what you told me. About Tim.

Wally: I…just said that I personally don’t feel comfortable being on the same team as someone who pretended to be an angel of music to manipulate a young girl into loving him with the ultimate intention of keeping her with him forever through fear and…coercion?

Steph: …

Tim: …

Peter: ….dude - what

Artemis: (audibly taking a deep breath) so I don’t know why he just recited the plot of Phantom of the Opera verbatim - but if you think for a second that I’m going to let you walk out in that zeta tube Jason Todd without an explan- SIT DOWN.

Jason: (slumping back in chair, groaning) For the record - I DONT EVEN GO HERE

(The issue was resolved pretty quickly after that)

Jason’s birthday present

Steph: Hey Dick, I was looking for a birthday present for Jason, and I need some help.

Dick: Oh sure! Let’s see, he likes..

Steph: oh no, I don’t need advice. I just need you to put me in touch with Zatanna.

Dick: umm why?

Steph: I’m not going to tell you and ruin the surprise!

Dick:.......ok steph. I’ll call her and have her meet up with you. I don’t know why, but I have a bad feeling about this but I’m going to trust you.

*on the day of Jason’s birthday. Opening presents*

Jason: *picks up an envelope and reads it* hmm from stephanie. Just an envelope? Come one steph, you could have done better.

Steph: shut up and opening it. You’ll like it.

Jason: *opens the envelope, pulls out a small piece of paper and reads what is on it out loud* “One free curse. Cash this in to Zatanna and she will put a curse on someone of your choosing. One time only offer. Curse cannot be applied to stephanie.”

Dick: Steph I trusted you!

Jason: *tearing up* I-I love it! Thank you steph this is the best gift ever!!! This is the standard for all of my gifts from now on.

*eventually Tim becomes cursed and can no longer make a left turn for 3 weeks*

Re: comics, familial love, and abusive parents

Occasionally I still see the back and forth arguments over if Jack Drake is abusive or not, and I am not here to create an itemized list of all the times Jack Drake is a piece of shit. However, arguments against Jack Drake being a piece of shit usually boil down to: but he loves Tim.

And I am not even here to talk about how loving your child does not excuse you from abusing them nor is it a defense against being an abusive parent.

Rather what I wanted to do was demonstrate that complex parental relationships were a theme of comics aimed at teens during the 90s and early 2000s. Particularly involving parental love from child abusers.

The most extreme example of this is David Cain.

image

[Batgirl 59]

I don’t think there’s anyone out here ready to throw down defending David Cain. He literally coerced a woman into having his child and then horribly abused that child to turn her into his “perfect assassin.” Mental abuse, physical abuse, denying her basic skills like speech… this man is the whole Abusive Dad package.

image

[Batman 567]

Despite this, David is routinely depicted as deeply loving his daughter, even as early as No Man’s Land when Cassandra was first being introduced. This would be the depiction of the two one would look back on when asking “is this in character?”

image

[Batgirl 22]  They’re shown to have genuinely sweet moments together back when Cassandra was a child and it’s plenty clear David loves her despite being a complete and utter fucking bastard who treated her like she was less than subhuman.

image

[Robin 107]

image
image

[Robin 111]

This is part of why Cassandra and Stephanie Brown are such close friends. Stephanie’s father is ALSO an abusive asshole who left behind a complicated jumble of emotions for Stephanie who, while she states she never loved him, is uncertain if he ever loved her, given that she isn’t sure she really ever knew what kind of man Arthur Brown really was.

In the example above, Steph tells Tim a story in which her father is heavily implied to have murdered his friend, Jim Murray, who had attempted to molest Stephanie when she was 11. Arthur Brown is irrevocably a shit bag, but the story intentionally leaves the audience questioning whether or not he killed Murray out of love for Stephanie or out of pride for himself.

image
image

[Young Justice 18]

image

[Young Justice 25]

I think another example people maybe won’t remember is Cissie King-Jones and her mother Bonnie. This is a much less extreme example more in line with Tim’s experience with his father. It’s played straight and to the point, typical of the more grounded down-to-earth problems you find in the early Young Justice run alongside the fantastical elements. Bonnie is basically a stage mom, and her abusive behavior towards Cissie is often fueled by a desire to do what she thinks is best for her daughter, a fairly typical way average parents fall into patterns of abuse, particularly Bonnie’s brand of vicariously living through her child. “I love you, I’m doing this for your own good” ends up masking the very selfish intentions.

And then there’s Jack Drake.

image

[Nightwing 20]

Jack Drake loves his son. Jack Drake worries about Tim, cares about Tim, and wants Tim to be happy.

He’s also an abusive shit bag, and the comics know it.

image
image

[Batman 480]

image
image

[Robin III: Cry of the Huntress 4]

From basically the inception of these two characters having a tangible dynamic in the comics, Tim is clear that Jack is neglectful.

image

[Robin 45]

He also has a giant volatile temper, leading to emotional abusive and even strays into pre-battery physical abuse territory.

image
image
image

[Robin 72]

It’s clear Jack loves Tim. But it’s also clear David Cain loves Cassandra, and Bonnie King-Jones loves Cissie. And they are aaaaaaaaaaaaall selfish and abusive in their own way.

The running theme of this era of comics aimed at a younger demographic is that parental relationships can be messy, and sometimes love isn’t enough. Sometimes the people who love us, and the people we love, are also the people hurting us.

I think it’s important to remember that.

This is y'all day so lets celebrate it talking about your favourite Bat Mom moment

(P.S anyone tries passing Bruce, Dick, Selina, Alfred or Jason as a Bat Mom will be promptly ignored)

Shit

So I was rambling about Mdzs x Batfam crossover but but I fucking deleted the thing because it wasn’t saved……..

By the way

It has been a while since I consumed MDZS content and my Batfam is mainly from fanon

So if I get it wrong I’m sorry!!

Okay where and what was I say

Got it

Bruce he’ll may or may not like Jiangcheng they would emotionally understand each other but that won’t mean they’d get along. Jiangcheng is something that needs to unpacked. Actually same as Bruce.

Wait crack ship Bruce x Jiangcheng

Two old men taking care of traumatised children. The single mother ship.

I’m not sure how’d he handle the bat kids to be honest. They may treat him like how they treat Bruce idk.

So next up is

Weiwuxian

First of there is a high chance that’ll he’ll take Batkids under his wing no question asked. Is he the best guardian figure no but is he fun.

YES

He’s already a trouble maker plus the batkids that cause more mayhem more on the crazy side but Lanzhan his dear husband more or less you bring him down from his high.

He’ll also become a mentor of sorts for them

and

Definitely make dead jokes

Lanzhan or Lanwanji

He … is the very calm one he wouldn’t stop the antic but just watches over Weiying just in case of injury or something. He definitely would have tea with Alfred.

Wait I can see him using the silencing spell agains some villains dunno who but just a feeling.

I don’t have a lot for him because he’s the calmer guy. He only freaky with his husband and clingy

Wait I thing they’ll just annoy there villains /thugs to death with how mushy and clingy Weiying and Lanzhan are together

Oh and now for the quartet Juniors

Ouyang Zizhen

Jinling

Lan Sizhui

Lan Jingyi

They’ll mainly hanging out with the bat kids

Jinling and Damian both would be called bratty by everyone those two would get into cat fights

Zizhen he is see him chilling a lot with Duke like and Cass he's a good kid and usually stays out of trouble or the one recording the trouble.

Tim ,Stephanie and Jingyi those to be roasting the hell out the bat fam. Definatly get into some pety drama. I think the girls would love to play with MDZS kids hair like braiding.

I think Dick and Jason would love Sizhui he's a sweet kid who knows when to be passive agressive. Plus he is the second chillest kid in the group.

Tim and Jinling together they will band together to annoy and spite Damian.

Damian would probably just sit next to Sizhui as he’s the tamest one.

I think my words became scrambled at the end

But thanks for reading

Here’s A Little Map Of The World, On The Left Of The Islands There Can Be Whatever Land From FromSoftware

Here’s a little map of the world, on the left of the islands there can be whatever land from FromSoftware you want really, it’s just a small little island. Also, I whipped this up in seven minutes, I promise you that my other drawings do not look this hideous, 😭 I will update it at some point.

The Lands of whatever the fuck I’ve gotten myself into. Honestly i just wanted to do a drawing now I’m writing a whole ass back story to a small idea of an AU I had.

The Great City of Gotham.

Backstory-

Gotham, the Great Capital City of the Deathstone Isle, was once a source of riches and landmass. The king, Thomas Wayne, and his Queen Consort, Martha Wayne, were just and fair rulers of the Islands that house Gotham and its few daughter cities. Martha and Thomas had a son, Bruce. However, one day they were found assassinated in their bed chambers, which left Bruce building up anger and resentment to people outside of his personal life over the years.

Eventually, these feelings show, along with everyone else’s as The Plague sweeps across the lands, transforming all life, waiting for you, dear Ronin Soldier, to vanquish them and stop The Plague from spreading any more.

List of Locations in ‘Greater Gotham’-

•Wayne Family Manor

•Crime Alley

•The Reapers Harbour

•Church of the Bat

•Church of the Flame

•The Crawling Cathedral

•Arkham Asylum

List of locations in ‘Outer Gotham’

•Old Gotham

•Lower Gotham

•Wastelands

•Blackgate

•Iceberg Tavern

•Academy of Gotham

•Ace Potions and Magic

Total numbers of ‘Bosses’ within the Great City of Gotham:

23

UPDATE about the Batfam x Fromsoft ware designs I’m currently planning. There will be two of each character, one before ‘The Plague’ and one after. After each one I’ll post about the lore behind these characters and why they ‘changed’ during The Plague.

Also, at some point today or tomorrow I’ll post about the actual land around them, what it’s like, The Plague that happened, a bit of backstory.

I will probably at some point expand outside the Batfam to the rest of DC.

Here is a list of characters that I’ve got planned out so far-

•Bruce Wayne

•Dick Grayson

•Jason Todd

•Cassandra Cain

•Tim Drake

•Stephanie Brown

•Duke Thomas

•Damian Wayne

•Alfred

•Harper Row

•Barbra Gordon

•Kate Kane

Finally, I’ll tell you now, please don’t expect regular updates for photos, I’m not good at time management, I’m already ten hours into the first drawing of Bruce, and I’m no where near done yet.

Thanks all! x

Hi, I’m pretty new here.

Would anybody be interested at all if I posted my Batfam x pretty much any FromSoftware designs over time? Like, genuinely, if this gets any attention, I’ll post them when they’re finished, or I might just post them anyway.

That moment when you realize Bruce Wayne’s canon “favorites” aren’t his favorites… their his ideal selfs.

Bruce isn’t a ‘girl dad’ or ‘loves Dick because he’s his eldest’ no. That’s not it. He likes Cassandra because she’s has his exact moral code with little to no differences, she follows it to a tee. He likes Dick because Dick is his perfect version, his ‘success’ the best version of his exact situation. He loves them sure, but he doesn’t favor them because of love. It’s to further his own ego.

This is proved with Jay, to take care of Jay he had to push his own feelings onto Jay. To ‘fix’ him. Jay didn’t need ‘fixing’ or an outlet, he needed compassion, GENUINE compassion. Not self imposed compassion or understanding by grafting his experiences over Jason’s and making it more about himself then Jay.

He needs to keep making others ‘better’, that’s why he keeps Jay around. But shuns him too. Bruce needs to fix Jay, but Jay is imperfect, a stain on his legacy. So he can’t.

If you think about it from this perspective, Gotham War starts to actually sound completely in character. He succeeded, he ‘fixed’ Jay in his mind.

Same with Damian, not exactly, but close. He just couldn’t be the one to ‘fix’ him. Yeah he values Damian because he’s his son, but paying attention to him regularly? Nope. Damian’s been ‘fixed’.

Tim doesn’t need to be fixed, he fixed Bruce so Bruce ignores him. Any attempt at fixing would be met with a wall.

As for Stephanie he couldn’t twist her story to fit his narrative, so he just completely rejects her.

Cass and Dick are his legacy. They were ‘fixed’. That’s why he values them.

Some food for thought, I personally don’t like this, I like good dad Bruce Wayne that values all his kids equally and tries to reach out to Jay because he genuinely wants to help his son but won’t put Gotham in danger because of himself. He pays attention to Damian, praises Tim, wants the best for Steph even if she isn’t his daughter.

But, when you think of the wider scale of Bruce’s actions in the comics (without thinking of the hand of the author) this pattern is a thing. I REALLY want to be wrong.

PLEASE COMICS LET BRUCE BE A OKAY DAD! NOT EVEN GOOD JUST OKAY IS FINE! JUST LET HIM LOVE HIS KIDS EQUALLY AND WITHOUT ANY STRINGS ATTACHED!

Would Batman, the Robins and Batgirls be like ghosts hunting Gotham everyone knows are ghosts or like they think their cryptids?

Also here’s some ideas for this how each one of the kids dies for sadness.

————

Dick’s death

Dick dies the same night as his parents, he didn’t wait and preformed the stunt with them. Bruce finds him alone and confused not realizing he’s dead.

I don’t really see Bruce aging you can disagree.

Gotham starts seeing these spectators of two boys scaring criminals and playing in Wayne manor (which has been left abandoned since the Wayne’s death). Everyone knows not to go near the place because of hearing the disembodied giggles of two boys or foot steps running through the manor at night. Sometimes they say past dark you can see two small heads peaking out of the upper floor windows.

Meanwhile Dicks having the time of his life in the manor. As it doesn’t look abandoned to ghosts. So Dick thinks only his parents died but Bruce a much older spirit knows that isn’t the case. But he tells Dick he’ll help him try to take down his parents murder. (Which really isn’t the case, it’s really avenging his own along with his parents death)

Dick does find out he’s dead eventually, mainly because no one ever seems to notice him or Bruce when they save them. So Bruce let’s the cat out of the bag, and Dick is reasonably upset.

————

Jason’s death

Jason dies little match girl style, (if you know you know) he freezes. Jason doesn’t move on the for the fact he never really got to live so to speak. So he just hangs out in the Gotham alleys, scaring poor citizens as he goes.

Jason becomes his own kinda cryptid. The spirit of crime alley.

People think he’s Bruce for a long time because Jason’s death was so underwhelming no one knew he died till some homeless people found his corpse due to the smell. Because the Wayne’s were a more prominent death to happen in that area, they all think it’s the ghost of the lost Bruce Wayne who hunts the streets of crime alley. Rather then Jason Todd, the nobody street kid who died as he lived, alone, cold, and hungry. (Don’t mind me I might low key cry at this)

When Bruce finds him he doesn’t know what to do, there’s no attachment he has other then Gotham itself, how is he supposed to help this kid move on? So Bruce just takes him in hoping Jason will just kinda, burn himself out. Ghosts can do that right? Dick tries suggesting Jason has any idea what he could be attached to or what purpose he has and Jason just shrugs. He has no clue ether, he was kinda hoping when he died he’d be free from Gotham forever to be honest.

So

Bruce makes him his second Robin in hopes Jason can find something to do while they find his attachment, that won’t make him go off his rocker. Because ghosts go crazy without something to keep them busy.

Jason gets resurrected at this time, Bruce and Dick are both sad and relieved thinking they finally found the thing Jason was attached to after the finding his mom. But that isn’t that case.

————

Tim’s death

Tim dies alone, mainly due to neglect. It wasn’t out of malice intent, but Tim died trying to find out clues about what the “spirits of Gotham” (Bruce, Dick and Jason) are. He died due to an accident, but his parents soon followed. Finding out he was missing just as they got home, going out to look for him. However Tim gets caught in a villain attack and dies. They both later die due to their grief.

Tim was actually very likely to pass on, but got lost for a split second. While simultaneously gaining a attachment to Bruce and Dick because this last thought was connected to Batman and Robin.

When Tim tells Bruce and Dick he knows he’s dead, but he can’t seem to move on. Dick asks “well what was the most important thing to you before you died?” And Tim just responds “You two.”

And that creates a new “aw crap” moment between Bruce and Dick because “how to make a kid pass on when his most important thing was two ALSO dead kids?”

So Tim, Dick and Bruce come to the conclusion, Dick and Bruce have to pass on or Tim is stuck forever in Gotham. Tim ends up helping because it’s the right thing to do, but slowly grows to resent the fact he’s stuck in Gotham.

————

Barbara’s death

She dies her first night as Batgirl, Dick and Bruce tried to save her but she fell to her death from a rafter. Her attachment was to Gordon, mainly to keep him safe. Because that’s something that couldn’t be resolved over night, Dick and Bruce let her stay in the manor out in the hope it will keep her stable and not wondering around Gotham.

She’s mostly content, she visits Gordon and tries to bring him some sort of comfort after her death. He’s become consumed by work.

————

Cassandra’s death

She died as soon as she made it to Gotham. It wasn’t any spectacular she died from starvation, she couldn’t speak so she couldn’t ask for help or get help. She didn’t move on because she was terrified to do so, her attachment become her want to do better then she did in life and make up for what she did.

The others get her prospective and offer that maybe if she does good maybe she’ll end up in a better place after she moves on. Cass soon learns she probably won’t ever leave. Not because she can’t, because she wants to do good. Being able to make up for her mistake is the best things she could’ve asked for.

Though she lives in constant fear that one day her father will find her body and she’ll be forced on the run again, because he wants to bring her back.

————

Stephanie’s death

Steph dies because of her dad. He ended up killing her by accident and she felt resentful of him and that resentment turned into her attachment.

She was definitely all for murdering her dad but turns out killing someone for killing you doesn’t land you in very happy places when you die. Even if it is justified. So more for her own safety, the others discourage her from killing for her own sake. She doesn’t listen at first till everyone puts it into perspective how bad hell is.

Steph eventually learns to have mercy for him, but it takes a while before they lock him up. Steph became more motivated by her father killing her making her mother fall deeper into her drug addiction.

————

Dukes death (I’m mixed on this one)

Duke actually dies during the initial Riddler attack. His attachment became his parents similar to Barbara to Gordon. He was dead set on saving his parents, creating an attachment to always keep them safe.

Turns out, metta powers work even in death.

Because they knew he wasn’t going to move on easily or sit and do nothing they made Duke one of them. He’s actually the only one people widely know in Gotham. But no one thinks the phantom is a hero, most people think Dukes a trick of the light so to speak. Or something like that.

————

Also each one of the kids have one area they hang out besides the manor.

Dick hangs out around Halys circus

Jason and Bruce of course hang around crime alley

Stephanie and Duke hang around their parents places

Barbara hangs around Gordon and the GCPD building

Cass doesn’t really have a place but she does occasionally goes to the place she died out of paranoia

And after the Drakes move in close to Wayne manor Tim hangs around it watching over his parents

————

As for Helena, Harper and Kate. They still exist there’s just no vigilante in the area that has inspired them to dawn the mask. But Kate and Harper have been inspired by the myth of the “Spirits of Gotham” before to consider it.

————

Now as for the main idea of this Au who are most for and whose the most against it?

Team: Hey I wanna be alive again

Duke, Steph and Babes

Team: I don’t know, maybe?

Tim and Dick

Team: I don’t wanna be alive again

Cass and Bruce

Ghost Batfamily AU where Bruce dies with his parents and simply never leaves and slowly over time he gathers the rest of his birds as they die in Gothams dirt.

Jason dies when he's twelve, 3 years later he disappears and a boy comes back to life in a pit of green.

Red Hood takes the League by storm because as far as they're aware there has never been a hero in Gotham, Jason is just desperate to find the children that had become his family again.

for shits and giggles: my personal take on what shoes each batfam member wears

bruce - almost always dress shoes, if he’s in the manor casually he’s in slippers and socks but if he’s leaving he’s in dress shoes.

dick - he’s a vans lover till he dies, and he never switched over to converse when they got more popular. he has one pair of custom nightwing converse that he got from wally and donna.

barbara - adidas or pretty much any comfortable running sneaker (yes even after the killing joke). she also loves flats she thinks they’re so cute.

jason - combat boots. he likes how heavy they feel, they help him feel grounded, keeps him aware that he’s moving and walking and alive. he also has a pair of red hood slippers from lian and roy.

tim - his go to is always a good pair of converse but he has the more eclectic shoe collection you’ve ever seen. heels, heelys, sneakers, boots, flip flops, you name it he’s got a pair.

steph - you wouldn’t think it but she’s a secret sneaker head. she gets excited over new shoe drops and she loves dunks and jordans. sneakers are always a good go to present for her.

cass - converse but she ties them like gwen stacy in the spiderverse movies. also has a pair of purple vans she bought cause they remind her of steph. she can on occasion be found just wearing her ballet flats around the house.

damian - wears dress shoes like all the time like bruce, however he has a pair of light up sketchers from dick that he does wear on occasion.

duke - has two pairs of converse, one of them practically falling apart at the seams and the other pair being a gift from bruce. he also likes breathable nike running shoes, his favorite being a basic black pair.

i like this because they definitely naturally had to end up stealthier than bruce when they all grew up running around in those bright ass traffic light costumes

the biggest issue Bruce has with his kids working with the JL is probably that he trained them too well and now he’s scared of them and doesn’t want to embarrass himself in front of the league.

Jason once walked up behind him so silently during a meeting that when he turned and saw a flash of the red helmet an inch from the back of his head he screamed like a teenage girl in a horror movie. Jason, nonplussed because all of the Robins scare the shit out of B like at least once a week, patiently waits for him to get his breath back before asking if they could grab thai on the way home. the rest of the JL stare in baffled awe and Bruce never lives it down.

Tim similarly appeared next to him once when he was fixing one of the appliances on the watchtower and when he made himself known by complaining that Damian kept flicking apple slices at him Bruce jumped so hard that he smacked his head against the frame of whatever he was fixing and gave himself a concussion. Barry laughs so hard he chokes on his coffee and Tim is just confused.

The kids aren’t even doing it on purpose, they’ve just naturally become too silent even for Batman and when they freak him out they just sigh and move on bcs its gotten old

In Case Anyone Was Wondering

In case anyone was wondering

Steph: I’m not going to do it. But what is stopping me from just, yknow, joining Jason’s henchman ranks?

Dick: Steph please-

Steph: It’s not Money. Money isn’t the issue. Is it morality? How far into the color wheel am I? What shade am I?

Dick: Shade? I don’t understand, but please-

Steph: What shade is ‘morally gray’?

Jason: 939597 is the hex code.

Dick: Jay for the love of, Steph isn’t going to be your henchman.

Jason: why? Cause she’s a woman? You got a problem with henchwomen? Are you being misogynistic towards the art of hench?

Dick: Hey hey it has nothing to do with-

Steph: I think I’m like two codes away from that color.

I really like the hc of Bruce giving star stickers for those who behaved well (as well as they can be) and taking them if they misbehave, the kids make a competition out of it and make fun of those who lost a star.

Bruce: this week's stars goes to...

Batkids: *all looking at Bruce*

Bruce: Dick, Tim and Cass.

Damian: Father! I do not approve of such thing!

Bruce: you don't have to approve anything damian. Dick did a great work in Blüdhaven and didn't threaten more than 3 people, Tim completed his homework and helped me Crack two cases without any stalker tactics, and Cass helped Alfred bake which was very sweet.

Jason: I don't understand the rules to receive a star, but I'm with demon brat.

Duke: *raising his hand along with stephs* we didn't do anything wrong!

Bruce: you skipped patrol the whole week.

Steph: I was busy!

Bruce: *adding the stars to their cards* no you weren't, you were just lazy. *turns towards Jason and damian* you two do get one star taken away.

Damian: unbelievable! Father I will not allow it!

Jason: I behaved pretty well this week in my opinion.

Bruce: you threaten every villain we saw, waved your gun around like a maniac and had to be stopped twice from using the crowbar.

Jason: like I said pretty well behaved.

But this also extents to Sups. Clark has little stars that he gives batman when the man passed a whole JL meeting without insulting, indirect insulting and looking condescendingly or glaring at someone. He also has them taken away when he did those things.

Bruce: that wasn't a glare, I was merely looking.

Clark: B u scared Bart for the third time this week, and yes that was a glare.

Bruce: *crossing his arms* I think you are being unfair about this thing.

Clark: I'm sorry Bruce, but I have to take a star from you today.

Bruce: no.

Clark: *raising a brow* no?

Bruce: *starting to lightly jog away from clark* no! It's my star!

Clark: Bruce come back here!

It's an idea of FIC I work on

TALIA HAD ANOTHER SON

I really like brothers' relationships, I believe that they are special, strong, and not easily broken. And Damian has three older brothers.. well not anymore...

Talia was not honest when she said that Damian was her only (firstborn) son, because (Elias) breaks her saying about it, Elias is Talia's first son and she gave birth to him about six years before Damian, the reason why the latter is not in Damian's life is his exposure Exile from Damian's grandfather on the accusation that Elias is too weak to be his heir

Elias lived the rest of his life in exile from his only family, following the news of this family intermittently until it was completely cut off after he knew that (his blood) had moved to Gotham, where his father...

Gotham is Elias' next destination...
