The protests of Hawaiians before colonization
NO. 1
In regard to cultural survival and cultural sustainability, many traditional Hawaiian practices like long distance voyaging, paddling, fishing and surfing is very important, as rom the start of the 19th century to 1970, western colonization almost destroyed Hawaiian culture. In ‘The Struggle for Hawaiian Sovereignty’, by Haunani-Kay Trask, she writes, pg.9, ‘’Entering the U.S as a Territory in 1900, our country became a white planter outpost, providing missionary-descended sugar barons in the islands and imperialist Americans on the continent with a military watering hole in the Pacific—By 1970, rural Hawaiian communities were besieged by rapid development. Urbanization brought an influx of rich haole from the American continent, who unlike tourists, wanted to live in Hawai’i. Evictions of Hawaiians lead to increasing protests, especially in communities scheduled for residential and commercial development.’’
Examples of these protests was one that occurred in 1976, by Isaiah Helekunihi Walker with the creation of Hui O He’e Nalu (club of wave sliders) for preservation of control over North Shore Waves. He voiced concern about an endangered Hawaiian space, or ‘ka po’ ina nalu, which translates to the ‘surf zone’. When Captain Cooke arrived in Hawai’i, he believed the Polynesians were skilled navigators and surfers, as they were able to migrate, or sail, against powerful sails and winds from Asia to the pacific islands. Unfortunately, the missionaries that came decades later deduced that surfing was a ‘barbaric activity’, and with the success of the Christians, Hawaiian men and women especially, were discouraged from boxing, wrestling, or surfing, which was regarded as an act of resistance for both men and women.

The cultural practices of paddling are another tradition that survived against western colonialism. It was made with canoes, and they were mostly made up from trees, coconuts, or kol trees. In ‘The story of Albert Kamilla Choy Ching, Jr.’ it explains the cultural aspect of paddling and what it means to the Native Hawaiians. ‘’Al was a natural for paddling. He had keen eye-hand coordination and excelled as a steersman. He also loved to teach, and his high school coach John Kapua had taught him enough about paddling technique during his sculling year at Kaimuki for Al to want to improve himself and others. ‘I kept coming back [to paddling] because there was a desire to get better. There never was a desire to get to the very top—-it just came. I wanted to get a little better, and then I figured maybe I can beat that guy and then the next guy…. Before you know it, there’s a lot of guys behind you and you never intended to be that way, ‘’ pg. 4. But on pg.9, the meaning of paddling delves deeper as Al explains, ‘’I enjoy watching out people learn, how they came up from nothing. And if any of them win a race in the state championship, that makes me happy, real happy. Just watching them. Because I remember when I won…. All the things that I learnt through canoeing come from my Hawaiian side. How to look at the clouds. How to look at the ripples on the water and to see how the water is running. Even navigating backwards…the canoes did a real lot for me, kept my health, kept my tradition, kept me in touch with Hawai’i.’’

This co-exists with the nature of the fishponds, that ‘’played a spiritual, cultural, and political lives of the people. To the native Hawaiians there is a direct spiritual connection between man, god(s) and nature. As noted by Minerb, the natural environment of the land ‘aina’ and sea ‘kai’ and all things contained within it are perceived to be sentient, divine ancestral forms that have extrasensory perception, and interrelate with people as a family. Thus, to Hawaiians, nature is not only conscience, ke ea o ka ‘aina (life-force of the land) but much of it is divine.’’ pg. 2 of Ancient Hawaiian fishponds.

Hawaii was a group of islands that used a social hierarchy and status was a sign of great importance. Competition, including that of the fishponds, and cooperation were ideal values, as traditionally the ideal is that of chiefly status who were obliged to care for those in there lineage. The hierarchy goes from chief, warriors, experts and craftspeople, and fishermen. Another cultural tradition is long distance voyaging, where Hawaiians sailed in large canoes and traveled across huge waves to get to the nearest land over long distance and time to discover new lands, which is what Ancient Hawaiians did. An example would be the great Hawaiian surfer Eddie Aikau who sailed long distance, over giant waves during the 70’s. The voyage is highly dangerous, as the ocean is temperamental, but lots of sailors today even, do it to feel closer to their ancestors and to remember their home. The comparison and contrast between all four, long distance voyaging, paddling, fishing, and surfing in regard to issues of sustainability and cultural survival is that by doing these activities, it was seen to the Hawaiian people as an act of resisting the degrading, humiliating andappropriating acts that colonialism brings with it, as they were immersed with the natural world.

Hope in all it’s agony
The Blindside
2009 was the YEAR for Sandra Bullock movie-wise. All About Steve was hysterical and the immigration scene at the end of The Proposal was brilliant even thou the rest of the movie is a bit cliché but of course the main movie of that year was The Blind Side. While some controversy exists from real-life Michael Oar’s feeling that the book and film placed too much emphasis on the Touhy’s efforts and not enough understanding of his own (along with dumbing him down), this was still a great movie that portrayed fostering’s ups and downs both for families and children in the system, racism, adoption, family-values, Christian values, love and acceptance all in ways that didn’t come off cliché or too happily-ever-after even thou it was a real story and we got a seemingly unrealistic, but true ending.
The campiest part of this story is how Michael is able to bring his grades up in order to get into college. While true, it is a unique situation that reminds us not everything real in life comes of real in a story. But campy and true, this small part is the overall story of Michael Oher: keep trying, find your way in and ask for help. A good overall lesson for those who feel they have fallen behind or lost their way. But if I were to pick one thing to take away from this is the scene where “Big Mike” gets called Michael, because he doesn’t actually like to be called Big Mike. A short scene, just a few lines but with a big impact and understanding if you (like Leigh Anne) are willing to be open-minded and pay attention.
Lean on Pete
Lean on Pete is another story about family and loss and heartache but—oof--does it have a different feel. While during The Blind Side we see Michael Oher slowly rise up, Charley falls, falls and falls catching every heartbreak that can occur, and how life can slowly becoming crushing, especially when it seems someone has no one.
While overall the movie crushed me and its dark it is important to look at the idea of the film and for Charley was a focus on hope. He leaned on the horse Pete and by the end, we are left with the idea that things will be alright. Now, those I saw the film with had different opinions than I did about this, to them he really will be okay while I think he’ll survive but be severely traumatized, but maybe they’re right and we're supposed to believe regardless of all the missteps and bad fortune that things can turn around if we keep believing and striving for good and how if we don’t need those people to help us up, we should be those people to help others up
The Gift of Fear
Not all books can be comforting, not all books are make-believe, not all books are heart-racing suspenseful; Gavin De Becker’s The Gift of Fear is all three. Gavin De Becker, the author, shares with us the stories of his clients who were raped by strangers, celebrities stalked by ‘regular people’, obsessed coworkers and more. He dissects them to show them, and us, where and when we should trust our gut and how it really isn’t our gut, but our logical mind setting off warning flags that society has told us to ignore.
I’m reminded of an SVU episode wherein thinking she’s just being racist, a young white girl allows a big black guy into her apartment to help her unload her groceries—she didn’t need the help, and she wasn’t being racist, there was something about him that she knew was off but told herself she should ignore it and then got raped. There are people who are racist, this book nor I ignore that, but just as women have been taught to smile, we have all been taught to be kind and understanding—even when we shouldn’t be. Sometimes it doesn’t matter much, but sometimes it means the end of our lives. He reminds us, me, of the phrase “look at someone’s actions, not at someone’s words”—he reminds us that people choose to be nice, charming—it doesn’t mean they are. He gives a list and more descriptions about Pre-Incident Indicators: methods used by those trying to get something from you that they are used to people ignoring:
Trying to make you two a team
Making you feel sympathy
Locking you down and trying to force a connection
Making a situation where you feel it’d be rude to not speak to THIS COMPLETE STRANGER
Trying to get you into your debt
Trying to make a deal with you, when really they could just leave
Refusing to hear the word no
People say this book could save your life, no. It reminds you that you already have the power to save and fight for your life, you just have to recondition yourself to listen to yourself and trust what someone is showing you. The aspects of this book being real and harrowing are obvious, the issues of comforting is how it allows us to trust ourselves again. This book isn’t just for young women, mothers, or the elderly. I’ve shared this book with managers, coworkers, friends and more. Share this book, read it’s tales and learn how you can survive. It’s awful, but as we know have work-place shootings as part of our fire safety, and the access the internet provides others with our personal details, this book is only becoming more important
Dementors
"Dementors are among the foulest creatures that walk this earth. It is with our introduction to Dementors that we really feel inside JK Rowling, even for those who dealt with depression, the aspect of it being temporary and out of ones control made the connection difficult--but is becoming more accepted overtime. While some stories show us new worlds, and other stories draw connections from different worlds to our own, others open our eyes to living a better life and all the different ways stories and books and conversations, sometimes we read to find ourselves as we look for ourselves in others. This is one of the best examples, of how JK connected us and brought us forward within ourselves as those right next to us. Her ability to openly and honestly portray pain, loneliness and loss are some of the most crucial elements that people needed to feel connected with in order to survive.

we survived because we were the “smartest” species you say, we survived because jellyfish don’t know how to construct a Fighter Jet. We survived because our environment is ours to manipulate with walls and floors and lightbulbs to capture the sun and tunnel into night.
we survived by being faster in our cars and stronger with our tools, and better than we were before. We survived with language to build on the past with and weapons to fight the future. We survived because of our hands and our heads and the fact we make the universe itself knowable.
But then again, a mother will gain the strength of ten men to lift a full car off her baby. A man will spend eight hours nursing a puppy back to health and that dog will follow his every step from the doorstop to the grave. A best friend will dropkick an alligator in the water for the sake of him.
And I’ll tell you, maybe it was all of it. And maybe it was because we loved each other better than we hated, we loved each other in the dark before the lightbulb and loved each other more in the wilds before our walls, and we loved each other so thoroughly we made pyramids and libraries and monuments, and wrote not for the sake of money and food and living, but for the sake of wrapping each others hearts in velvet soft to escape the sandpaper winds of this world.
And that too is survival. That too is a reason. Not for our brains or our hands or our grit, but for our willingness to wrap each others wounds in bandages and set the broken bones of grandparents and sit outside windows and sing lullabies and love songs and cry over butterflies and sunsets and care too deeply. Care too strongly. Care too much.
That too is survival.
Seveneves, a Sci-fi book by Neal Stephenson is a must read for those who love to read about space-life and how life would be 5000 years after apocalypse/explosion of Moon. And the most intriguing part is when the survivors build their own races in space and then they venture to reoccupy earth after it heals!
I loved it even though it was a pretty long book.

How to Survive Fourth of July With Hypervigilance:
Independence Day can be rough for Americans living with hypervigilance related issues. The loud noises can make your heart race and your head spin. It may even feel hard to breathe. You’re gonna have to be strong. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to help.
Put in your earbuds. Listening to music will not only drown out the sound, it may also help you calm down. Music has been shown to help reduce anxiety and stress levels by up to 65 percent.
Use noise reduction headphones. If you want, you may even be able to see the fireworks! Just make sure you slip on a pair of noise reduction headphones. They can reduce the noise by more than 70 percent!
Spend the day with someone you love. Just being around someone we love can help steady our heart rates and calm our breathing. While it may still be rough, spending the time with a loved one is likely to make it a little less torturous.
Take a shower. It’s gonna be a long shower, but the noise of the water will drown out the fireworks.
Cuddle with a furry friend. Pets can be hugely therapeutic to people struggling with any sort of mental health issue, and even more so for those struggling with anxiety and ptsd. (Note: this may not work if your pet is just as panicked about fireworks as you are.)
But most importantly, especially for anyone struggling with any past trauma, remind yourself that you are safe. Do something that requires you to interact with your environment to help yourself stay in the here and now. It can be hard to stay in the present when faced with certain triggers, especially if you are alone.
You are strong and you will make it through this. Everything will be okay. I promise.
