Progress Report: In Truth No Beauty, in Lies No Refuge
I just sent my Papyrus file to my beta. Since I'm just under 90.000 words and she has a life on the side, it'll take a hot minute. This part is, oddly, the hardest. I can't do much except wait, feeling both accomplished and anxious.
Well, I can do one thing: Get going with the next fanfic. Which is exactly what I'm going to do. (No, not a beefleaf one. Next one's Xiyao.)
The only point of contention I have is that if Jiggy ascended, they wouldn't need Ling Wen so very desperately.

Progress Report: In Truth No Beauty, in Lies No Refuge
The first draft of my sequel to Avenge the Living, Heal the Dead, is - as of now - complete. Now I have to proofread and edit - heavily, in a few spots.
I have heard that whole thing about gardeners and architects. I've always thought of myself as the latter: I usually know when I start writing where I'm going and how I'll get there. This time, I am really glad I didn't post while I wrote, because I wouldn't be anywhere near the finishing line if I couldn't go back and adapt to changes in my plans. (That is why one of my older fics, Tug-o-War, took me almost five years. I've since learned a lesson: Finish before posting.)
So I'll need a bit for this process, then I'm sending it to my beta. And once it's back, I can start to post.
The title will be In Truth No Beauty, in Lies No Refuge. My working title was 'High Water Over Hell', but I was increasingly unhappy with that (because anything that would have made that make sense never made it into the text). I'll let you know when it goes to my beta and when she's cleared it. :)
Okay, listen. I never read WiPs because I got invested in too many of them before they were discontinued. I have no idea what possessed me to open this one first BUT I AM SO GLAD I DID and you should, too.
This fic takes a somewhat different direction regarding what will happen with Shi Qingxuan after canon, and it's believable and brilliantly executed.
Go on. If you like Beefleaf and slow burn and HELL I DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW THIS IS GOING TO END but I think it'll be fine because if it isn't I'll cry ... Anyway, if you like those things, then read it.

Avenge the Living, Heal the Dead
A ghost is being harassed and a mortal is taken. A god and his ghost king follow the trail.
Someone sneaks into the temple Shi Qingxuan and his beggars use as a shelter, acting like a sneak-thief. Of course, he won’t have that. Hua Cheng and Xie Lian on the other hand just want to spend the morning in bed. Possibly the whole day. An unannounced visitor spoils that plan.

Re-reading TGCF is interesting. Someone has probably said this, but here I go anyway.
During the Banyue arc, I had a bit of an epiphany. Hua Cheng catches Xie Lian, keeps holding him while fighting Kemo, and tells him not to be worried.
In the flashback at the end of the second volume, Xie Lian catches a then unknown child, keeps holding him during the staged fight with Mu Qing, and tells him not to be worried.
Even the first time I thought ‘It’s dirty’ is an odd excuse for not setting Xie Lian down. I mean, they’ve travelled through the desert by funnel cloud, they’ve had a building collapse right near them, and had an intermezzo with the mud face. I’m sure Xie Lian’s clothes weren’t exactly pristine any more. But that isn’t what it was about: He refused to pass up the opportunity to recreate their first encounter with reversed roles. It was just too good to let go.
This is really, really well done.

Watching Heaven Official's Blessing with my Mom - season 2
For the record, she's 70, I'm 40. I introduced her to the Donghua because I knew she'd love it.
"I think your husband* has a few screws loose." (About Shi Qingxuan trying to turn Xie Lian into a woman.)
"Be nicer to him. I'd drop you at once." (About the Earth Master being rescued, then carried.)
"Are you sure this is your husband?" I confirmed this. "Oh honey, I think your husband is gay." (Same as above, pretty much only a blink later.)
She had an eye-rolling contest with Mu Qing when he and Feng Xin fought while Xie Lian was under arrest. She would have won.
"Oh, but he's whipped." (About Hua Cheng helping to free the prisoners in Qi Rong's lair. She believes he might not have bothered. I'm a bit on the fence about this, knowing how he made Eming - and more to the point, how he did not. But I can hardly tell her that.)
There was no verbal response to Qi Rong aside from an exhausted "Pitiful." She observed him with the same expression she might use on a particularly slow dog.
"Now there's a guy you know never got laid." (She said this when Shi Qingxuan threw her breasts at Feng Xin. I was howling with laughter, she thinks it was in agreement, but it was obviously a bit more hysteria-tinged.) She also noted my husband is a brat. I can't argue with that.
She asked me if Xie Lian killed that guy at the end. I told her if she wants to know that she'll either have to be VERY patient until season 3 comes - or be moderately patient and read the books where that answer doesn't come at once, either.
*I told her that on the fuck - marry - kill list Shi Qingxuan is number two. I told her that fuck is Pei Ming because that man has experience. The way Xuan Ji clings to him, he must have some skill, too. Kill is Shi Wudu, but I did not say that to her, just that it's a character she hasn't met. She knows I dislike the Water Master, but she doesn't know how much. I didn't give that answer lightly, in my defence. There are very few characters I resent enough in TGCF, if any, but I had to name someone.)
I'm sure someone has already said this, but I have resisted posting this for THREE DAYS and now I have to.
I can't get over how fitting the name Ship-Sinking Black Water is.
Because that fellow sank his own ship so, so hard.
I don't even blame him, mind you. I actually like him, even though he's an acquired taste for me. I just want to scream at him and maybe whack him on the head until he uses it.
But other than that I'm totally sane about these people.

The highlights so far after season 1:
'Why is he scared when someone mentions butterflies?' (I ... honestly can't answer that. Yeah, their wings can cut stuff - or people - but still, it seems so excessive.)
'Idiot woman, have some self respect.' (About Xuan Ji. Not how I would have put it, but I share the sentiment.)
'I want a little ribbon like that.' (About Ruoye, obviously. I tried to explain to her that she might reconsider eventually. She has since produced a white silk band from God-knows-where in her house and keeps fondling when we watch.) 'Aw, come on, how bad can it be?' (Worse. I offered to lend her the books after season 2.)
'I like that snake. I want one.' (She's a biologist.) 'Okay, maybe not that many.' (The scene where they pour down into the sinners' pit.)
'Are we going to see those two women again? They seem fun.' (Wind Master and Earth Master in Banyue arc. I told her yes. I managed not to look like I want to cry.)
'Isn't it a little early to be giving him a ring? Waiiiiit. ARE THOSE HIS ASHES?' (We had a death in the family recently and burning your ashes into a diamond was a VERY present topic of conversation over the past couple of weeks, but I feel so stupid now because I only got that one when HC says if the place where they're kept is destroyed he doesn't care anyway.)
Edit: I'm forty, she's seventy. I swear she knows more anime than me and this is the kind of story she totally digs.
I haven't read all of the books yet either but I agree with you that Mu Qing doesn't deserve the hate that he gets. But he also gets a lot of love, people are just quieter about it.
No, what they went through is not comparable. They both suffered in different ways, and neither character is 100% perfect. That's how the author writes.

It's okay, i'm not in the fandom (obviously since i haven't read the books) but i am around it ig since i really like svsss, what i see is usually very 50/50 either people that love him or people that say weirdly hateful classist stuff about him, and it's quite interesting honestly, even Shen Jiu (one of) the villain of svsss is extremely loved and he is a whole child abuser 💀 i guess it's interesting to see how polarizing people's opinions of him are

hii well personally I don't think mq leaving xl was a problem, the issues come after the whole mountain ordeal imo. He could have simply not been an asshole and gang up against xl with the other heavenly officials! Also I hadn't considered this before but. I do think xl having to live in poverty for 8 whole centuries is worse than whatever mq went through! I suggest reading the novel instead of posting shit takes like a retard ^_^

You might want to learn how to read because living in poverty for however long and everything xie lian went through can both be bad. Are they comparable? No but i didn't compare them, you did.
I haven't read Tgcf and i'm not planning to (not my cup of tea) but why is the fandom so classist against My Qing? He doesn't own Xie lian eternal servitude, he doesn't owe him anything actually, they might have been friends but MQ priority was his mother and that's okay. It's like people are only okay when HC does the whole "Will do anything for the person i love most" bit but suddenly MQ choosing his mother over XL is bad? I don't get it
