Yeeeeeesss look at that, gimme all the great quotes

I do think there is a balance in the message though. These people who ascend or fall are human, but how much of their humanity do they lose? Over hundreds of years, how much do they change, try to leave behind - or remember, or vow to never, ever forget, to never let go of?

Just the ability to choose to hold onto or let go of things, of beliefs or obsessions, that's so human of them - but humans aren't supposed to be eternal. Xie Lian has to suffer things that regular humans never do, to live through death (or fatal injuries), through generations of change, through the rise and fall of kingdoms, through his own strengths but also his very many weaknesses.

Jun Wu and Hua Cheng have held onto and lived consumed by their resentment and devotion respectively, having to actively fight off anything that would contradict these things. A single lifetime of living with betrayal and heartbreak can break a person, but Jun Wu's resentment is so powerful that it essentially reshapes the entire world because of how it grew and amassed and never stopped tormenting him. Hua Cheng's devotion was so powerful that he gained an actual foothold to reshape the world almost as effectively as Jun Wu - enough to oppose his reign. These kinds of devotion are impressive specifically because they lasted so long, enduring so much, enduring things that shouldn't be human.

Xie Lian, Hua Cheng, Jun Wu, and many of the other gods have held onto who they are without any desire to change - regardless of the right or wrongess of these beliefs they refuse to change. It takes a great deal of effort, but in the end Jun Wu is the one who has to stop, who has to change after 2000 years of obsession. Even after he remade the heavens and got revenge on everyone, he still went this far.

Yeeeeeesss Look At That, Gimme All The Great Quotes

It's natural to want to stay a certain way out of habit, because staying the same is comforting, but even so the world moves on without you and you inevitably change despite your efforts. But these gods spend hundreds and thousands of years without change. Jun Wu got everything he wanted but he continued hating even when there was no one left to hate - in fact he seemed to foster another round of gods to continue hating, just now they're under his thumb.

These people are fundamentally human at heart, but how much of that humanity remains once they've lived lives that can't be called fully human anymore? They are human, but they also can't be, but they can choose to try to stay human, or they can choose to be warped into something else.

And when they find out they chose wrong, they can choose again - but only if they remember that they are human, and humans have the power to keep chosing and changing.

Totally random but, as much as I generally love the TGCF fandom, I’ve noticed that it always mildly annoys me when people refer to, say, Hua Cheng or Xie Lian as not being human, when it’s kind of a major thing that they are still human. Maybe I’m being annoying here but, there’s a reason one of my favourite quotes from TGCF is ā€˜When humans ascend, they are still human; when they fall, they are still human’. I kinda feel especially strongly about this in regard to some of the ghosts because, well, you wouldn’t look at a human corpse and say ā€œNo! That’s not a human! It’s a corpse!ā€, yeah, obviously it’s a corpse, but it doesn’t cease to be human just because it’s dead, it’s just a dead human.

I haven't seen a lot of people talking about this, at least enough for me to confirm, but just to set the record straight - was Guzi's original father abusive towards him?

From the time we first meet him, Guzi is convinced that Qi Rong is his father, despite the utterly absurd things Qi Rong gets up to. The only reason he indulges Guzi for the most part is because he enjoys having someone who follows and relies on him completely, without a hint of deviance or disgust or aversion. Like most of his other foolish followers, Qi Rong proclaims he's the best and they believe every word, and he'll keep Guzi around until he happens to stop being useful. Guzi certainly knows some specific things are right and wrong, but so long as Qi Rong says it's fine, for the most part Guzi just goes along with it.

The whole time I was getting the vibe that Guzi's original father and the body Qi Rong possesses wasn't a good person. To some extent, he made Guzi unwaveringly faithful to him - even when it came him doing to bad things, to other people and/or to Guzi himself. It's implied that even things like forgetting to feed Guzi, neglecting his health, running off with no regard for whether Guzi can keep up, complaining and yelling at Guzi or referring to him as a pest of some kind before then praising Guzi for being a good boy every now and then, and so on and so forth are all things that Guzi is very used to or already very willing to put up with.

Guzi was young enough to be completely reliant upon his father, but it also seems like he didn't have a mother or any other influences until Xie Lian came along, and even with Xie Lian's better treatment, Guzi would always be following Qi Rong, defending his "father", and looking up to him because he was told to - as opposed to humble little Xie Lian who never brags about himself. In the end, it worked out for the best, but like Guzi went through some shit yo, what a lovely little messed up family.

Anyway I hope that Lang Qianqiu and/or Xie Lian are making sure Guzi gets raised right because Qi Rong managed to run across the one kid crazy enough to put up with him and this is our only chance to thereperize them both, but hoo boy we got some work to do. Hua Cheng should be turning that kid into a Xie Lian devotee is what I'm saying, get some practice before they get their own child

Look At Our Boy Suffering For Love
Look At Our Boy Suffering For Love

Look at our boy suffering for love

Since San Lang literally has dice with teleportation arrays that can take him anywhere he wants, this has to be the first time in 800 years that he's had to actually WALK from point A to point B. Supposedly ghosts are affected by too much sunlight; that doesn't seem like it would get to Hua Cheng with his power level, yet you can't deny our boy looks miserable.

I think he's most upset that this whole trek is happening because SOMEONE doesn't have enough spiritual magic to get them right where they wanna go. He might have even been fine with an extended trip if it was just him and Xie Lian, but those other two had to butt in. No wonder moments after this he's immediately picking a fight to make himself feel better.

Sleeping in Puqi shrine? Easy, gonna win over Xie Lian in no time

Trudging across the desert for hours on end? Gege, I'm going to die again please have mercy

I've tried to post this like three times but Tumblr mobile app didn't like me and just threw away all my witty commentary the moment I hit "Post", so I juggled my video and photos to my computer just for that sweet desktop experience!

But like can we all acknowledge that Xie Lian ascended into a god the third time through junk collecting? He just collected scraps SO HARD that he ascended. Like did he plan that? Or was he just minding his own business one day and then a Heavenly Tribulation rained down on him and he was like "Whoops, guess this is what I'll be known for forever let's gooooo!" It sounds like him, honestly.

I've Tried To Post This Like Three Times But Tumblr Mobile App Didn't Like Me And Just Threw Away All

Everyone knows Xie Lian as that one god involved with a plague and whose martial skills are second to none - to the point that he's stronger than Hua Cheng by the time his curse shackles are removed. But let's all remember the REAL reason he's a god at the start of TGCF. Our boy is just that good that he junk-collected his way into heaven, and I think we should be praying to our scrap immortals more often.

"Even if it was a lie. I wanted Qianqiu to remember that his benevolence toward Xianle was reciprocated. To believe that doing the right thing will open endless paths. Not like now, where he thinks everything I told him and everything he believed in was all false, lies, and deception. That everything was fucking nonsense! I just...I don't want to see anyone go through what I've already had enough of."

But in the end, who was killed was killed, who was murdered was murdered. However just the reason, however compelling the reason, the truth was that he'd killed, with his own hands, an honorable king who had truly wanted to eradicate discrimination, as well as the last blood descendant of his clan in this world.

Anyone Else Losing Sleep Over How Hua Cheng Treats Eming Poorly? Eming Was Made From His Own Eye, So

Anyone else losing sleep over how Hua Cheng treats Eming poorly? Eming was made from his own eye, so you'd think they'd be in sync - and they are, when it combat, because Eming was born in a desperate need for a weapon and to overcome enemies.

But Eming was also born from a low point in Hua Cheng's existence and must represent the person he was back when it was created - utterly devoted to Xie Lian, but also too weak to have been of any use to him. He saw himself as a loathsome lost puppy lapping at the heels of a god he couldn't hope to be worthy of serving, crying over everything.

Anyone Else Losing Sleep Over How Hua Cheng Treats Eming Poorly? Eming Was Made From His Own Eye, So

It was also during his time desperately overcoming the trials to become a Supreme, aka what Hua Cheng also considers a shameful part of himself. The moment Xie Lian learns about the divine statues and murals, Hua Cheng jumps to suggest they be destroyed, and had tried as hard as he could to make sure they weren't discovered at all.

He changed himself into a suave, calm, collected, overpowered loyal servant to Xie Lian after 800 years, thinking that his prior exploits as a human and as a Wrath were too erratic and disrespectful and not at all how he wanted to be. He would indeed still do everything that Xie Lian wants of him, but now he's actually confident he could do it - so confident that he would even follow Xie Lian's heart when it doesn't seem like the right thing to do or even endangers him. No more hiding behind a mask as Wuming or lying about being his follower. He looks down upon who he used to be: all the same devotion, but not enough power, experience, or confidence to actually do anything RIGHT.

Anyone Else Losing Sleep Over How Hua Cheng Treats Eming Poorly? Eming Was Made From His Own Eye, So

It's no wonder that Hua Cheng not only says no when Eming first wants a pet, but also repeatedly whacks Eming when the blade gets too needy. He thinks Eming's needy behavior (a reminder of his own personality back in the day) is as shameful as the past he worked desperately to leave behind. When he would have broken out into tears just trying to be noticed, when he was desperate for love and clung to Xie Lian when he first showed him kindness.

Eming is willing to show emotion and cry and become erratic even when Hua Cheng himself is keeping a surface-level calmness or focus. Is it any wonder why Hua Cheng doesn't want Xie Lian to see that he still feels emotions and weakness when he dedicated himself to being strong enough to protect Xie Lian, eliminate all his threats, get him whatever he wanted, so that he never had to suffer again?

Eming's sentience is limited, so the blade never evolves or changes or gets over its emotions by processing them over time. Hua Cheng himself was able to change into the person he wanted to be - or who he thought Xie Lian would need and like better - but Eming could never take the same steps. It remains as utterly devoted to Xie Lian and simple-minded as the moment it was born.

It just also happens to be a super deadly saber on the side nbd

Just our boy's face, actually being taken off guard for once because Xie Lian recognizing him in any way seemed beyond him for all these years. ā˜ŗļø

He spent his childhood thinking Xie Lian wouldn't remember anything about him, perhaps even HOPING His Highness wouldn't remember him because of how ashamed he was to even exist. He spent his life ridiculed, looked down upon, and thought himself ugly and cursed, but Xie Lian treated him well all the same. He was surprised when he learned Xie Lian didn't even know he was kicked out of the army, thinking Xie Lian had personally given up on him, only to be relieved that he wasn't aware (and had even recommended him, so yeah dick move there Mu Qing, you deserved a few punches).

Xie Lian didn't even seem to connect the bandaged child to the young bandaged soldier, then he wasn't recognized as a little ghost flame or a Wrath as Wuming. Hua Cheng thought his love for Xie Lian would be seen as just another horrendous part of him, but he could still indulge in it so long as Xie Lian never knew. He's so terrified of Xie Lian finding out about his obsession that helped him become a Supreme that he nearly misses Xie Lian being put under a spell and is scared to let him free just because of his fear of rejection. He immediately says he'll destroy the murals and divine statues before Xie Lian finally beats it into his head that he doesn't want them destroyed and wasn't averse to any of it from the start - just a little surprised and amazed.

Our boy was nervous to show his true form for the first time, suave as he played it off, still thinking he's going to be too ugly and tainted to be worthy of Xie Lian's attention, or to just not be memorable at all. He's constantly worried about hurting him, offending him, or showing horrible sides of himself, but by the time we get to Qi Rong, Hua Cheng has an even bigger grudge against him than Mu Quing and actually gets really angry - to the point that Xie Lian even notices. While he's just trying to clear Xie Lian's name, he goes to the effort of paralyzing him and forcing the truth to come out, which is a huge betrayal of trust and the only time he seriously goes against Xie Lian's wishes. Hua Cheng is fine with being the bad guy to do the dirty work so Xie Lian never has to, so he's even MORE shocked that Xie Lian stands up for him in that moment because at that point, the illusion of a kind stranger has begun to crack, and there's no going back.

Xie Lian is absolutely willing to be the bad guy just to make sure others aren't punished, even if one of them fought for a pretty lie and the other fought for the ugly truth. Remember that Hua Cheng knows basically nothing of the 800 years after almost dying as Wuming and becoming a Supreme, since even all his resources couldn't find Xie Lian while he was unaffiliated with the Heavenly Court - probably Xie Lian's awful luck making him nearly impossible to track down until Hua Cheng got some godly(ghostly?) luck to counteract it (also probably the same reason Xie Lian never mamaged to hear about this famous "Ghost King Hua Cheng Crimson Rain Sought Flower" dude, since the human realm doesn't keep up with that stuff); only his third ascension allowed him to find Xie Lian again, and Xie Lian has gone through even more tragedies that Hua Cheng doesn't even know about.

Hua Cheng seems to have forgotten that Xie Lian is more like him than his idolized memories would have him believe. Xie Lian is willing to fight for what he believes in - and he's freaking STRONG and SKILLED enough to do it, he's just purposefully asked to be hindered and contains himself whenever possible - not just a passenger to his fate, and he will care for Hua Cheng whether he's a monster or a beast because they're friends, not even with anything more being involved. Our prince is used to being ridiculed and targeted, especially by his cousin, but badmouth his friends and get slapped!

Anyway so the above image lives rent-free in my head nbd

Ok, I Am Never Gonna Be Over This Moment.

Ok, I am never gonna be over this moment.

I wanna know exactly what Hua Cheng is thinking with this look on his face!!

I want first class premium access to all the thoughts racing in his brain rn because... man....

Hua Cheng has never expected Xie Lian to return his affection and love or to defend him or to fight for him, yet Xie Lian starts feeling it and showing it more and more, as he inevitably falls deeply for Hua Cheng. Now that Xie Lian is in his life again and it's no longer one-sided, it's too much for him. You can tell he hasn't planned for this.

In the novel, he says at some point later down the line that he wants to become stronger to win over his beloved, but he didn't actually realize that 1. it would be so soon and 2. Xie Lian would also feel the need to defend him.

Hua Cheng would give the whole world to Xie Lian without even expecting a "thanks", so when Xie Lian starts actually reciprocating his actions more and more, it leaves him speechless and heart-eyed every time.

They both love each other so much, but don't realize how worthy they are of each other's love and care.

I am in love HuaLian's love!

VOLUME 5 MOMENTS THAT I ADORE (HUALIAN MY BELOVED) (ft. TINY HUA CHENG!!!!!)

1) Xie Lian watched him in a daze, not speaking a word.

Hua Cheng frowned slightly. ā€œYour Highness, youā€¦ā€ Suddenly, Xie Lian’s free hand reached out and pinched Hua Cheng’s cheek. Hua Cheng’s eyes widened as his face changed shape from the entirely unexpected squishing.

ā€œā€¦Gege!ā€

Xie Lian laughed. ā€œHa ha ha ha ha ha…sorry, San Lang, but you’re too cute; I can’t help myself. Ha ha ha haā€¦ā€ Hua Cheng was speechless.

2) Hua Cheng clasped his hands behind him. ā€œYes. I’ve endured this for too long. I can’t wait any longer.ā€

Just as he finished talking, Xie Lian slipped his hands under Hua Cheng’s arms and lifted him. He raised him high in the air and laughed.

ā€œIt’ll be such a shame! I won’t be able to pick you up like this once you’re grown again. I’d better hug you as much as I can right now. Ha ha ha ha ha ha haā€¦ā€

3) Xie Lian held Hua Cheng even tighter, and his hand smoothed his hair.

4) Hua Cheng reached out and lifted Xie Lian’s chin. ā€œHis temper is certainly nice, but mine is bad. No one but me can touch the things I love.ā€

5) ā€œTry touching him, I dare you,ā€ Hua Cheng warned frigidly. ā€œDo you think I would so easily allow you lot to touch my heart’s dearest treasure?ā€

6) Only a single ā€œhaā€ had left his lips when Xie Lian flung out his silk bandage; it whipped out so hard that Pei Ming was almost sent flying. He only barely dodged with a backward leap.

ā€œYour Highness, just how deeply do you treasure Hua-chengzhu? Can’t even take a joke?ā€

Ps. I LOVE PROTECTIVE XIE LIAN.
