More Ellies
James Fitzjames
William Gibson
John Smart Peddie
Today's Ellies: Cornelius Hickey
And Nedward Little (he's little-er than the others!)
So I was calling this ellie John Bridgens, but then I started doing this
Re-naming him Jirv, obviously.
This is Magnus Manson, he's bigger than the others, shown next to Harry Goodsir (who's regular sized)
There's just something magic about doing a The Terror rewatch starting with episode 10 (we are gone) and going straight back to episode 1 (go for broke). You get to see everyone all happy and professional and working. Especially lovely to see Mr Collins and Lieutenant Little actually *doing* their jobs. My babies are prospering (let's ignore what's going to happen)
Been making these little elephants
Decided they're going to be named for Franklin Expedition Personnel.
From top: Graham Gore, John Bridgens, Henry Dundas Le Vesconte (because he's lemony), William Pilkington.
This one is William Orren, of course. (added info in comments)
i am completely fine in an “i have been mentally unwell for years” kinda way
Your two disaster uncles reminiscing about the good times while the horrors loom:
(The Terror Episode 2, from u/mcsuppes1012 on the terror reddit)
I love everything about their dynamic!
Terror re-rewatch, episode 1. Really struck this time round by the contrast in 'manner' between Mr Goodsir (I'm using the mister here for a reason) and Dr Stanley. The historical men had different training (hence Mr - a designation of someone *without* a degree in medicine vs Dr) but also vastly different *experiences*. Dr Stanley was a war surgeon (after his training as a doctor), and per history as well as in Fitzjames' own story in the show, he served in a combat theatre, being the one who saved Fitzjames' life after the Chinese sniper wound. I think that really informs the clever choice they made to cast such an austere looking fella as Alistair Petrie and how he acts -- this is a character that's seen *a lot* of death, and has a requisite coldness about it when David Young is dying. It really contrasts him to Goodsir, who trained as an anatomist and doesn't have a medical degree (and this is his first voyage/service as a surgeon) - how much death has Goodsir actually seen? How much does that inform how 'clumsy but caring' he acts with David Young? So interesting.
Terror brainworms: I had to make a welsh-wig.
I decided not to do the 'curls' as they are on the show because they absolutely *eat* yarn and I didn't have that much left of this grey (that matches my Terror-inspired fingerless gloves). I think these garter-stitched double-ups will be just as effective as curls or bobbles would be for the purpose of a welsh-wig (they stop water dripping down the back of your coat).
I made them by knitting the current row of stitches together with picked up stitches from a row 7 rows previous (basically - pick up a stitch from row 7 rows behind, knit it together with current stitch, pick up new stitch...and so on).
This is in dk-weight (8ply) 100% wool at 6 stitches per inch, like my gloves (not historical as it's not fine enough, but yarn I had on hand, plus some close-but-not-that-close darker yarn when I ran out, which I think they definitely would do in the 1840s). I feel like one (at least) of the Terror boys would have mended their wig with some other yarn!
I've put this on Eric, a stuffed hippo, who is why my tumblr is called 'hippocrafty' - the original plan was for Eric to model my crafts. I'm a) cursed to live in a warm & fairly dry climate & b) have long hair, so I won't get much use out of a welsh-wig for its original purpose, but it's a warm comfy beanie with a bit more to keep my neck & ears warm when I have my hair up so I'm very happy with it.
I knew *someone* had ribbed-top fingerless gloves!! Our favourite boy who FUCKS, but more importantly, who CARES, Solomon Tozer!
Had to make myself some grey fingerless gloves. Terror brainworms made me do it.
I noticed when looking for reference pictures to explain to my non-The Terror friends why these gloves were so necessary that the characters whose gloves are closest to this either have full fingers (Crozier) or are fingerless but without ribbed tops (Blanky and Jopson), but I'd already made the ribbed tops of fingers. They're very comfy & utilitarian though, I'd bet money that at least *one* of the guys had ribbed-top fingerless gloves!
They're in 8ply 100% wool, so not completely historical (they would've had finer yarn in the 1840s) but made with what I had (historical in spirit then, since 'use what you've got' is historical). I knit loosely so these are on 2.50mm double point needles at 6 stitches per inch.
I'm cursed to live in a warm climate so I won't get that much use out of them but sometimes I make things for the *vibes*

Couldn't leave it in the reblog tags, so poignant that they might be having "goodbye dinner" 😭
The Terror Rewatch: episode 3. Does anyone know anything about why they still set Lieut. Gore's place at the wardroom table?
Just seems absolutely peculiar to me that they're setting his place out at the table (nice china & silverware and all) when he's died.

The scene in The Terror Episode 2 where the last lead party returns (sans Lieut. Gore, plus Silna & her father) and Franklin goes "where's Graham?" When they're still like, 200 metres away makes more sense when you know that the actual Graham Gore, this guy
Was an ABSOLUTE UNIT of a man. Above six-foot in height and broad-built with it too. The actor Tom Weston-Jones, who is lovely and does his best with a limited role, is 6' scratch and just doesn't have the sheer size of the man.
(from a tumblr post of how to pick which one is Gore - he's hat-pompom-guy).
I don't think they changed the script to reflect that it would be hard for Franklin to see that Gore isn't there (given the actor is regular sized) versus it being easy to tell he's not there (the real man was an absolute unit!).
I wish they'd found a big fella to play Graham, rip big sexy, I just love a unit of man in a uniform <3
Just in love with Trystan Gravelle here - the completely unexpected (though I might have expected it in that I did know he was Welsh) accent here! I thought he'd sound like Henry Collins but he sounds fresh off the set of Gavin and Stacy!
Will never not giggle at Nedward's "happy birthday :)"
Completely surprised that 'No Surprises' or another track from 'Ok Computer' by Radiohead isn't on here

So I need to babble about a contrast I noticed between two 'cold boys in boats' shows: The Terror and The North Water. So, in The North Water, Jack O'Connell is wonderful as ship's surgeon Patrick Sumner.
But, and this is a regretful but, a decision made by his character/the show's writers just straight up *busted* the show for me. He's supposedly (due to complex backstory reasons) addicted to laudanum/opium. Yet, in the third ep, he apparently decides to send *his whole supply* off with someone else, to somewhere else, and, it being the heckin' arctic, therefore loses it. I remember straight-up pausing the show to go rant to my partner "Is it this bitch's first day as a drug addict? He didn't even keep *any* on his person at all times? Come the heck on!"
Where in The Terror, after three years stuck in ice, this absolute madlad, Mr Blanky, still has his tobacco for his last smoke, on his person, at all times:
And gleefully takes it while waiting for the monsterbear to kill him. *That's* a sailor with an addiction I can believe in!
Proof Harry D.S. Goodsir wasn't a doctor *yet* -- readable handwriting!
Obsessed with how in the Erebus muster book all of the officer’s signature are super fancy and neat and then you have Goodsir…
Bless his little heart
My partner just suggested he's the dolorous Edd of The Terror, and yes, Collins kind of is, but also no. Edd's dolorous, but he's realistic, he knows his world's shit, he's frustrated that other people seem to expect his world not to be shit, he's come to terms with his shit world & expects nothing else. Edd, in a weird way, is healthy in his dolor. Where Henry Collins is *suffering* , poor fella. Both of them brought to life by incredible actors though!
my favorite part about henry collins is that he would be having a bad time in every timeline. he's your coworker that's always fighting battles. he's hitting his bong on his smoke break and having a panic attack on shift. he gets in fights w squirrels he doesn't start and does lose. you would have LOVED ssris and weed induced psychosis ‼️‼️‼️
Terror rewatch: ep 2. Can't stop thinking about the scene where (fake) Hickey's caulking the captain's seat of ease then he & Crozier have a drink. I think he gives himself away *twice*. Firstly he uses a slur (or at least, a rude word) for Irish *catholics* about himself & by extension Crozier. Yes, Crozier was Irish & suffered prejudice from that, but he was Church of Ireland/Protestant! Unsure if (real) Hickey was Catholic or not, but being from Limerick, he certainly wouldn't use that word of himself (slur reclamation wasn't a thing yet, yo!). Secondly, when they toast -- Hickey's clearly never heard of/is unsure of why Crozier toasts "Ourselves, then" (as, he later says, a bad joke). It's because of this (screenshot from wiki attached)
The Royal Navy do seated toasts every day at wardroom dinners -- Crozier asks what day it is, it's Wednesday, then says "Ourselves, then" because that's Wednesday's toast! Hickey (though not an officer) should be familiar with this already, but he's *not* - because he's an impostor! I think Crozier's suspicious of him from this point on, because of both these reveals, but is too depressed/alcoholic/distracted to actually *do* anything about it.
Terror rewatch, ep 1: just noticed it was Collins (as second master) who *sent* Billy Orren up top - specifically to teach another AB his knots! And it's Lieut. Le Visconte (aka Dundy) who won't let Collins try to save Orren after he falls -- notably, it's Collins who knows Orren's name and not Dundy -- perhaps presaging the Lieutenant's callousness about the men later?
I got Diggle. Tracks - i'm here for the snackies! And occasional cuddles next to the warm stove <3
guess who made a very very silly for fun quiz? (it was me!)
includes both minor and major characters... i might add more Qs later :)
