Are they still just besties if they occasionally sleep in the same bed, yearn to be around one another 99% of the time, have dreams about each other that range from relatively provocative to just straight up porn, stare longingly into each others eyes from time to time, have touches that linger and tingle, "fake" flirt with one another, call each other pet names when teasing, and trauma bond together?

it is so sickening to think about mac's desperation to be loved and how the neediness that radiates from him is ultimately what inhibits him from forming healthy relationships.. the gang is so tired of him constantly questioning his self-worth ("you guys like me, right?") that they've given up on giving him any attention whatsoever ("it's really a cry for [...] attention, [...] ignore those" / "treat it like a baby / "we don't like you either way"). he needs validation but seeks it in a manner that is so off-putting that nobody wants him around. he writers letters to chase utley. he visits his mom and dad, even though they never want to see him. he threatens suicide as a cry for help and is encouraged to follow through. self-worth is in the body, so why doesn't anyone care that he's been working out? he smothers his dog with affection but can't even get it to stay.

Like maybe they were engaged to marry when they were kids ny their parents. Lucy was happy about it obviously but Schroeder wasn't.

So it's the same dynamic between the two as we are used to. Then one day, either Lucy's parents changed their mind and cancel to engagement to marry her with someone more powerful. Or another gentleman start courting her and Schroeder get jealous. And Lucy is hesitant at first but them when she get to know her new suitor she realised she liked the attention and she's so sure Schroeder isn t interested that she just start moving on.

Oooh the angst when Schroeder realises it.
