The City of Smiles: Bacolod City 𓂃 ࣪˖ ִֶָ𐀔
Many families have different ways of spending quality time and bonding. My family, on the other hand, enjoys staying at home, gathering to watch movies, or eating together at the dining table while talking about our day. We love going on vacation, but we usually visit places that are easily accessible by car or bus.
However, on August 15, 2014, one of my most memorable childhood experiences was about to happen. It was the first time seven-year-old me got to ride a plane. We weren’t traveling internationally, but the thrill and excitement of my first plane ride were unforgettable. Our destination was Bacolod City, also known as the "City of Smiles." Our family went there for my cousin Keefer’s christening, and we stayed for five days.
Day 1 was our flight.
Day 2 was my cousin Keefer’s christening, where we visited a beautiful church and event venue.
Day 3 was when we explored a place called The Ruins—it was stunning and peaceful. The lush greenery and crisp, fresh air welcomed us, making it a truly memorable day.
Day 4 was an adventure at a camping site filled with fascinating and unusual sights—boiling mud, animals, bodies of water, and campers. I remember strolling with my grandpa, enjoying the place so much that we lost track of our surroundings. We suddenly realized we were lost in an unfamiliar place. We searched for signs and familiar spots but couldn’t find our way. Just when we started to worry, I spotted a man wearing a jersey with our surname on it—bingo! We had found our family again. We sighed in relief, laughed it off, and acted like nothing had happened.
Bacolod made me realize that the Philippines is full of beautiful places to explore. This trip inspired me to travel more, starting with my own country. And maybe, if I’m lucky enough, I’ll someday visit the places I’ve always dreamed of—Italy and Paris.
Day 5 was our flight back home. While I loved discovering new places like Bacolod, nothing is a place better than home. Fin.
