Kaplamino – The blue marble

Domino builder Kaplamino also experiments with Rube Goldberg contraptions like PythagoraSwitch. Here, Kaplamino challenged himself to launch a tiny blue marble all over a tilted table in using clever magnet tricks. All these unstable setups arranged in 2D make me want to play some Incredible Machine.

Casey Neistat – Human Flying Drone

I finally dig my way out of backlogs and fake news and find a ten foot monster drone carrying a snowboarding filmmaker. Doesn’t that make it a helicopter instead? Casey Neistat, best known for crashing his bike, puts his life in the hands of the world’s largest homemade drone as it tows him all over Finland. There’s a making-of video too.

Crappy Design

Crappy Design

/r/CrappyDesign is a blindingly colorful Subreddit that collects unfortunate design mistakes from all over the world. They’re the Engrish.com of half-baked engineering. Good old TwistedSifter recently did what I do with artists and made a post of the best/worst of the bunch.

The first animated gif on my blog took three years and is actually an mp4, not a gif. The gif was 10.7MB. I'll be using this modified Reddit gifv code to bring you more fake gifs in the future. You should be able to click this and go to TwistedSifter's post. Will it work, or is this just another crappy design? (For Tumblr, I corrected Giphy’s downsized medium version of this into a proper 3MB gif.)

Keiichi Matsuda – Hyper-Reality

Oh no, is this how augmented reality will end up? Graphic designer Keiichi Matsuda imagines Medellin, Colombia with a glitchy layer of graphics, apps, and ads covering it from top to bottom. These things are fine on my phone because they go away when I put my phone away. With augmented reality, there’s no escape.

Flyboard Air Test 1

Now this is a hoverboard! Zapata Racing makes those water jetpacks for your feet, and now they’re cranking up the power and making a Flyboard that flies through open air. The Flyboard Air can apparently fly for 10 minutes at up to 93 mph and 10,000 feet. If even half of this is real, I want one last year.

Wintergatan – Marble Machine

TwistedSifter just keeps finding awesome stuff I want to share. If you like my posts, you ought to subscribe to TwistedSifter too. How else would I have found out about Swedish electronic folk band Wintergatan and their one-man band contraption? 2000 marbles play a catchy loop on the machine’s built-in vibraphone, bass guitar, and drum set.

Ken Block’s Gymkhana Eight

Ken Block’s Gymkhana series shuts down streets and drives a tiny Ford like crazy like it’s Grand Theft Auto Online. This time, he takes us on a whirlwind tour of Dubai.

Dog Thinks Through A Problem

Sorry about the slow updates lately. I’ve got a new job, so I need a new schedule for stuff like blog posts and Instagib streams. I’m pretty sure I can make it fit if I bang my head on it enough.

Rob Scallon – Enter Sandman (backwards cover)

Rob Scallon is back and he’s really outdone himself this time. His cover of Metallica’s Enter Sandman was played in reverse on each instrument, then reversed back around the right way in editing. Even the vocals were sung in reverse! As always, he has fun with the video.

Vadim Makhorov – Hong Kong Rooftopping at Night

No, this isn’t from a video game! This is a photo from a rooftop in Hong Kong’s Wanchai neighborhood overlooking Causeway Bay and Happy Valley. Rooftoppers Vadim Makhorov and Vitaliy Raskalov took several trips to Hong Kong scaling skyscrapers, taking pictures, and even hacking a huge billboard.
