There was a part of him that was so confused by the situation he found himself in. This place was nice on standards he could never even understand. Vinny was sure the best place he had ever rested his head in was a hotel when he first got to Rome. Now here was Robin offering him a place to stay. She had mentioned it being a place she could go to, a safe space. It kind of made him feel like he was intruding on something. When he had woken up, her presence was very much known in the place. He had come to expect it. What he hadn’t expected was to be asked for his opinion on a makeup palette. All he had ever put on was eyeliner so he couldn’t even begin to figure out why she would want his opinion.

Nevertheless, he walked further into the room, his hands in his pockets as he sat down in the nearest seat. One left their spot and picked up the palette she was using. Definitely brighter than the usual black he felt like they both seemed to wear all the time. “Are you not sure about it? I think it looks good,” he stated as he leaned in closer to get a better look.

“The colors are pleasant enough, and reminiscent of the very fall I represent, but it is rather different to my usual so confirmation is always pleasant,” she confirms as she sets the brush aside and takes a moment more to ensure she had not smudged anything. As she does, an idea sparks and her lips tilt in the slightest hints of mischief. Quick hands reach for the orange lipstick and she applies it deftly, and with the explicit goal of getting it smudged before it’s final application. Once done, she sets the lipstick back in place and turns to face Vinny, brown eyes considering as she approaches until his knees are brushing her bare legs and leans forward, a hand falling on his shoulder to remain somewhat balanced.

Once their faces are mere inches apart, she flutters her eyelids and smiles like a predator about to pounce.

“I do appreciate the palette, but I want to make sure, do you believe it looks good on me, dearest?” She croons in question, as she leans even closer, close enough for their noses to brush, so that all he can see is her.

Preparing for events the mortal way is not an usual occurrence, but Robin desperately needed a quiet moment amidst the search of the missing artifacts, a break and — Perhaps she had wanted to check on Vinny, amidst all her duties. Her work as a Chancellor had lamentably made it difficult to drop by as much as she had wanted, but no one could deny her time to prepare for a royal wedding. She is applying a soft layer of eyeshadow when the door to her room opens and she senses Vinny’s presence enter the room.

“Oh, perfect! Do sit down, Vinny,” she urges as she finishes a swipe of her brush while looking at the mirror. “I need your opinion on the palette I am using, as it is rather more colorful than my usual.”

It was good to have someone to lean on when things weren’t going well. Vincenzo was lucky enough to say that he had a few. He knew his mother would always be there for him no matter what. There was also August and Emory. Even though August was…well, August. He had never judged the witch before and he was sure to never do it for the rest of the time he was around. However long that would be. They would have to speak again at some point, but he wasn’t sure he was ready for that yet. Not right now. The witch was one of his dearest friends though. There was only so much time left both of them had. And they were tethered to each other now, bonded in something Vinny hadn’t even grown to fully understand yet. That was only one facet of the things he wouldn’t understand. Another was how someone like Robin was even giving him the time of day. Or even had in the past.

“That’s good to hear.” Maybe it would be good to have her around. Better than being stuck in this fucking hell he had gotten roped into. No, he would stop thinking that. Vincenzo hadn’t wanted mortality, but it had been thrust open him too many times to count. Whether he wanted it to be replaced by death or immortality, well, he was more uncertain about that than anything else. “Right.” That was all he said for a moment as she spoke. “Kind of. Not really. I had roommates. Haven’t really bothered to see them in a while though. Probably ‘cause of the whole, ya know, death.”

“Yeah, that ought to complicate things,” she agrees with a grimace as she glances down at the table and up again to face Vinny. A million thoughts slot themselves into place as she tilts her head in consideration. There is little she can do for him in the courts and the Otherworld, for even now it would be a rather terrible idea to invite him to step beyond the mortal realm, but that does not mean she doesn’t have options. With everything going on the Eye, she has a considerable number of safehouses hidden for her fellow fey, but even that seems lacking when it comes as an offer for Vinny. Instead, she does have — .

Well.

“If you would like, I happen to own an apartment in Rome. Most of the time, I do not reside there and thus it sits empty. All I ask is that the mess is kept to a minimum,” she comments gently, expression calm and fond even as her lips twitch as his continual referral to her undead status. Perhaps one day the reference will be amusing, but she is not quiet sure. “And of course, you will have to be alright with me dropping by more often than not, as it’s where I spend my free time more often than not.”

This second chance at life was not what Vincenzo had wanted. It was honestly the last thing he had thought would happen upon his death. When August had brought him back, he could only wonder why. Why had his friend deemed it necessary to bring him back when he couldn’t even accomplish what he had wanted to do in the first place. The witch had made sure of that when he told him about Vivianne. The oracle that had been his enemy without her even knowing about it. Now she was safe due to her half-brother. What a coincidence he wished was not the case. But it was too late for things to change now. Well, it had been since they were born. It was a sad and annoying coincidence. And August had brought him back because Vinny was his friend. So now what did he do? Well, he was going to stick to letting it go for now. Until he changed his mind, that was.

Robin didn’t know any of that though. It had been a bit of time for them and Vinny couldn’t quite figure out how to explain the situation in a way where it wasn’t as pathetic as it sounded. Thankfully, as her hands rested on his shoulders and her forehead against his, he didn’t have to think about it. For right now at least. One hand lifted to her face just as hers had to his. Then his eyes closed, any shallow breath he had evening out for a moment. “Thank you. You’re…I’m glad you’re here.” He leaned away after the words left his mouth and let out a sigh. “I feel lost. Like I don’t know what to do anymore.”

...

For a moment, her eyes flutter close as she takes in Vinny’s presence. The memories of their first meeting flit through her head as she takes a deep breath to ground herself. The new information had surprised her, shaken her despite her attempts to show otherwise. The sensation of his hand cradling her face is what she needs to fortify her, a moment that reminded her of simpler times, of a time where she had no responsibilities but the ones she gave herself. For a moment, the weight on her shoulders lightens as she basks on his presence, but like everything, that moment soon fades and she opens her eyes as Vinny leans away, hands falling from his shoulders and into the table to cradle her gelato basket.

“Now that I am aware of your stay in Rome, I wouldn’t be anywhere else,” she admits. She will help him, despite being already overwhelmed by the work on her courts. There is just too much history between the two of them and she cares for him too greatly not to help.  Perhaps it’s been years since they last met, but that does not diminish the care, not when that time had been a blink for her, not when he is sitting in front of her.  “Unfortunately, I cannot give you the answers you seek, but I can offer my support in whatever you decide. Do you have a place to stay?”

It had not been long since he had met his unfortunate demise. The night had been burned into his brain and it playing like a movie on the back of his eyelids every time he closed his eyes. There was still nothing that gave him any inkling as to who it could have been. All he could truly remember was the lycan’s teeth digging into his flesh. It took two seconds for him to realize that he was going to die. Less than that to realize he was going to die while he was high. It was disappointing, but not at all surprising. Vincenzo could only think about how his mother would have felt. How he had proven her right to stay away from this place. But then August had brought him back. Being around people was already a chore. Now it was even more of that. It seemed like their magic was calling to him. Yet, he had absolutely none of his own. He hated it. What was he to do when he had lived most of his life with magic and now he was without it? There was so much going through his head, he couldn’t even focus on the gelato in front of him. He had gotten it, but it didn’t even look appealing to him.

There was a small commotion that he barely got to look up to see before he had a presence in front of him. The magic was strong, but all he could think about was how much he wanted it. And he wasn’t sure if that was meant as a witch or as a ghoul. The face that was behind the magic was definitely a pleasant sight to see though. Vinny didn’t have many friends, but he was lucky to have the ones that he did. August most of all who had actually cared enough about him to bring him back. When was the last time he had seen Robin though. It seemed like forever, but he was sure it hadn’t been that long. Time was something of a strange concept to him now though. He was dead. Why would it matter what fucking day it was? The spoon dropped back into the gelato in front of him as he scanned her face. It was…good to see certain people. Yet, he still didn’t know what to say to her.

“I’m not sure there’s anything you can do to help.” His eyes darted to any prying eyes and anyone’s ears perking up. This was nobody’s business but his own and whoever he decided to tell. Once he deemed the air clear for him to speak, he looked back at her, his eyes meeting hers. “I died.”

A thousand and one thoughts flit through her head at the whispered confession, the words hitting her harder than she had expected. Friends and lovers alike, she had known of his mortality, had expected to have to mourn him in a century like she had done with so many of those she had gifted with her heart and her trust. It’s still a blow to know it happened sooner than she had hoped, a blow to know he had died and come back and she hadn’t known. That he had been alone, on his first days as a ghoul and she had not helped. And make no mistake, she now knows he is a ghoul. Knows it for there is only one thing he can be if he has been brought back. There is a hundred and one questions hanging over them, but at the end, Robin is kind. She is not going to push when it is clearly not what he needs. She wants to know the truth, wants to know who brought him back, what he wants to do, if he had been buried once again to regain his humanity. She wants to know, but won’t ask, not now, not when the reality of his early demise so clearly weights upon him.

Robin doesn’t care about his new status as a Terror, does not fear it.

It’s Vinny.

A soft sigh leaves her as she sits on the chair across Vinny and settles her gelato on the table before them. There is a weight to his confession, something she can’t take away no matter how much she would wish for it. There is usually no coming back, once a mortal dies, no changing what has happened. He had been given a second chance, but with it, much had been lost. There is no words she can use, no empty platitudes that could be said. Carefully, gently, she reaches across the table, hands falling upon his shoulders and squeezing briefly, before they slide up to cradle his cheeks, thumbs brushing them reassuringly as she leans forward to rest her forehead against his in an attempt to provide comfort.

“I am here, whatever you need me, I am here.”

notes: the feeling when you see a previous lover on the street but apparently he lost his magic???

Who? @vincenzodives

Her first clue that something has changed drastically is when she doesn’t sense him. As a witch, and one she is more than acquainted with, Vinny’s presence should have pinged on her metaphorical radar.  It doesn’t. Instead, she realizes his presence in Rome by coincidence. After her recent appointment to Chancellorship, she had taken to slipping away to Rome whenever her work was done. The responsibilities are new, and while not fully overwhelming, they are a lot for someone who had never believed she would inherit them. The Autumn nobles might have elected her, but everyone had expected Fen’harel to last for another few millennia at the least. The realization of their betrayal had been shocking beyond compare, and had shaken the very foundations of what she had known of her court. As such, Robin takes her free time to wander around Rome and ponder over the changes, over the reality and the truth, trying to see all angles, to understand them.

It’s a tad different this time, as she had gone out of her way to visit the gelato shop in order to get something sweet while she thinks. Robin’s choice had been a whim, set forth by her clairvoyance and taken in the last second. To find one of her previous lovers, and a good friend, on the shop is a pleasant surprise. To realize that he had seemingly lost his magic, is not. She hadn’t even realized his presence within the shop until she had turned around to leave, catching a glimpse of him sitting on the corner. The breath had been stolen from her lungs as the realization hit, and she had nearly spilled her gelato on the hurry to get to his table.

“I would say this is a pleasant surprise, sunshine,” she tells him, sending him a warm smile before her expression turns worried once more. “But I cannot sense your magic, which concerns me. Are you alright? Can I help?”
