In a coincidence, I forgot it was 地铁(ditie) the other day and called it 电铁(diantie)(electric steel) which, still works ??
this has probably been mentioned before, but i still think it's pretty cool.
in chinese, we call subways 地铁 (underground rail, lit. underground metal; derived from railways, which are called 铁路, lit. metal roads). the same meaning applies to korean, and, crucially, japanese, which is what makes me think this is intentional:
