yk, this is a really good question. a lot of the revival lovers do infantilize whizzer, but everyone I've seen or talked to who love the older falsettos (the falsettos obc) are very respectful?

personally, I like both versions but yeah. whizzer shouldn't be treated like a child. I'm assuming it's because of andrew?? he's had a history in his fans and such of people treating him younger than he is??

interesting question. usually by timeline analysis, I just assume Whizzer is around thirty-four/thirty-two, and Marvin is something like thirty-six.

I don't know if it's canon but if Marvin and Trina married in their twenties, which seems the most likely for her/and his parents to force them, and then were married for ten years, it makes the most sense in my mind that he and she'd be like mid-thirties and then Whizzer kind of falls into that age range too.

also I think Christian Borle was fourty-two when he played Marvin in the revival, and Andrew Rannells was something like thirty-eight, if that helps at all (but I don't think they were chosen for age, and I've yet to look up Michael Rupert and Stephen Bogardus' age when they played the characters, so take this as you will).

does anyone on here know the canon ages for marvin and whizzer ?? ive tried to figure it out in my head but i wanna hear what yall think

I'm back with more absolutely rabid analyzations!

I've kinda had this circling my mind for a while, but every time I find myself relistening to falsettos (the 2016 revival) I notice a very specific difference in the way marvin/christian borle sings from act one and two.

like, I'm sure it's MEANT to be different, of course, it's a sung-through musical and a difference in the way the actors sing when time passes makes logical sense...

but I've always kinda realized that in certain parts marvin just... has a higher voice, especially in act two.

there's some bits and pieces of it scattered throughout act one, but take ttofl for example, the whole time marvin relies solely on one note, and occasionally shifts up the octave but only when singing alongside or arguing against whizzer─ but technically it can also switch, shone in their fight about their disputes and regular diagreeance.

("won't,"⬆️ "don't"⬇️ "won't" ⬆️ "DON'T." ⬇️⬇️⬇️)

-for another example of them fighting and marvin actually pitching UP his voice to be over whizzer's, see the beginning when they are arguing about how many months they've been together.-

and thus, I have rallied up this info (could I be delusional? probably.) to bring you a headcanon, consisting of:

marvin pitching his voice down to fit the role of the more 'masculine' man.

I COULD BE WRONG. TAKE THIS WITH A GRAIN OF SALT. BUT I HAVE CONVINCED MYSELF THIS IS SOMEWHAT REAL.

also I just thought it would make a good fic / oneshot premise, idk.

anyhow, take this as you will, I might've relistened to this album too many times and now my brain is scrambled.

marvin also just has a higher voice in my head because every other actor opposed to cborle, mostly, has a high /ish voice.

well, assuming this is about my last post, there are quite a few.

So, here are all the fics I could find in my history currently where Marvin has weight insecurities and Whizzer is like "oh fuck dude what nO I LOVE YOUU aND YOUR SQUISH" :

so, let's talk about the chess game a little more thoroughly

in the chess game (from falsettos, idk if that's apparently clear, "a chess game" could literally be anything lol) there's a pattern of impatience that follows the two main characters.

Marvin's impatience is fully one-sided, you can see as Whizzer begins the game, he's insistent for him to get his turn over with, even going so far as to (quite condescendingly) ask if Whizzer wants his help. But then the moment it's his turn, he takes his time despite Whizzer having rushed his first move.

I think this might stem from his constant need to "help", or rather, control every situation. He thinks it's always his job to be the leader of every circumstance, as the stereotypical man.

It definitely comes from a childhood of commanding others around and not having a heavy amount of discipline for his actions.

Otherwise, Marvin taking time to calculate his move shows that he's careful with his own placement in life. A life of tiptoing around himself and never actually accepting the full extent of his personality, or sexuality has made him incredibly courteous of where he stands. Maybe it even came from his relationship with Trina, how not being careful led him to being forced into an arranged marriage.

Meanwhile, (and I know I've gone through this bit before in other posts but yes, thanks, I need more appreciation on William Finn not just victimizing Whizzer. Like, he's not that great either guys. We love him, but he isn't perfect.) Whizzer uses the game as a strategy to get Marvin on his side.

Although instead of healthily sorting through his MASS amount of issues, Whizzer pretty much just ends up manipulating him into throwing the game. It's interesting because Whizzer has an opportunity to discuss all of the problems they have with Marvin.

They're in a place in their relationship where he can clearly just throw anything out there, but then he strikes back with anger instead of trying to actually figure out the main issues and help them both through it, effectively shutting off Marvin's ability to actually listen to anything he has to say.

The chess game was actually staged so perfectly, because you can clearly see all of the toxicity in one contained place during that song. There's obviously snippets in others, Marvin's inability to change and Whizzer's insistence not to change because changing would mean they would have to actually talk about their feelings toward each other.

anyways, these are just my thoughts on this :) none of its fully canon, I was just watching through clips of the proshot and realized some interesting things

i've been seeing a lot of falsettos posts recently deconstructing the fandoms beliefs and firstly

holy fuck thank you, i try to steer clear of fandom (and fandom-izing thereof) drama but this is getting a lot more visible recently so here's some little tidbits for you

whizzer brown is not an unflawed character!

okay so i haven't seen enough dissecting this but!!! in the chess game!

the whole point of marvin using that game to determine the ending of their relationship is because he suspects whizzer is constantly deceiving him and wants to prove it.

whizzer LITERALLY proves him right!

he asks marvin to help him along (yes i know he says he doesn't want help, hear me out, it's a little more complex than that) and takes advantage of the fact that marvin is- like- infatuated with him.

he draws him into a sense of false security then starts throwing accusations at him ("since you need a man!" "what?" "who's 'brainy'," "or witty, move.") until hes able to win, which he does with ease because he's been using marvin having this idea that he isn't smart against him.

of course, marvin's side of this isn't the best either but honestly, for once the fandom should focus on a different character when they think 'insane asshole'. typically we should also probably change our perspectives a little to be more unbiased cuz fr guys, this is getting really.. annoying.

i understand he's the most visibly flawed but that doesn't excuse constantly picking the worst parts of this musical (without other context, btw) to use against him.

and this post certainly isn't here to excuse anyone either i've just got a lot of opinions that i wanted to share while falsettos is.. trending? right?

2. marvin's (headcanoned but still somewhat researched) autism

this one isn't brought up as much but when i do see it around, it's kind of a skewed viewpoint.

while rewatching bits of the proshot i realized a lot of different neurodivergent traits that he shows-

he's helpless during I Never Wanted to Love You and is childish and regressive when he's upset (not every autistic person is like this either, i know this is a bit of a touchy subject so i just wanted to add that).

usually when people depict it i see it either toned down or joked about which is fine when all in good fun, and when its done respectfully.

not here to attack anyone, just here to point it out and say that yes :) he most likely is neurodivergent, but despite that his actions aren't condoned. he's still kinda a dick who needs to get his shit together

3. ..the lesbians also have shit going on?

just putting this out there- I DON'T SEE ENOUGH FOR THE LESBIANS! OR TRINA!

the girls in this musical are like thoroughly neglected and i think that's kind of shitty just assuming the fact that william finn put them in to demonstrate how gender roles put people in degrading positions (and he even makes it more prevalent by showing marvin as something like a misogynistic character who forces whizzer into more feminine roles to show the audience what woman have to/had to go through in society).

anyways, the lesbians aren't just there guys. they have a plotline too. in Something Bad is Happening, you derive a lot from charlotte singing about the outbreak of HIV/AIDS and realize how she operates on a daily basis (she's passionate about her work and takes every bad day as a hit to her life and career, explaining in a way that as a black, jewish, lesbian, FEMALE doctor in this time, everything that goes wrong is immediately brought down on her so much more than it would as any straight white male pharmacist-).

cordelia on the other hand has to handle the fact that her girlfriend is so adamant about her work ethic that she can't actually be super present in their relationship at times like that.

but either way she still sticks by her and is constantly trying to be supportive and endearing despite feeling like she's not amounting to her gf who's basically a hero in her eyes.

i kinda just wanted to bring that up because they mean a lot to me and they don't get enough love from the fanbase, thank you for listening to my TED talk <3

It’s mostly something that resided in my brain, although I did attempt to make a lil animatic with the song Tight-Knit Family that I quickly lost steam on cause I forgot how much I hate animating. I am still in school, so my free time is limited unfortunately for such projects :(

If we’re being honest, I can’t remember where I got the idea for this au, or if I posted about it or happened to comment on someone else’s post and you saw

The overall AU puts Fidds in place of Marvin, Emma-May in place of Trina, and Tate in place of Jason. Ford acts as Whizzer, though in this au instead of being sex obsessed he’s work obsessed and keeps trying to lure Fidds back into working on the portal with the promises of sex (though like Marvin and Whizzer their relationship evolves to be healthier by act two. I can’t figure out who from GF would become the lesbians from next door…

I’ve also got a Paul McCartney and John Lennon au for them
