An interview John did with his son, Sean, circa 1976. The Lennon family had just gainedĀ permanent residency in New York. Sean had been born October of the year prior. I apologize for the background music - I didnāt add that. My favorite quotes/partial transcript:
John: I was wondering if the fiscal crisis of New York had any āĀ
Sean: [Baby noises]
John: Uh-huh, thatās the one I was talking about, yes.
Sean: [Baby noises]
John: Exactly!
[ā¦]
John: I see you know which subjects to avoid and which not to. Very sensible. Must be running for office, is that what it is?
Sean: [Baby noises]
John: It is exciting, isnāt it? And such a strain on the - on the old ticker. [Laughs]
[ā¦]
John: Oh, heās smiling, folks.Ā
John: [Very softly] Perhaps youād like to tell me your favorite color?
Sean: [Baby noises]Ā Ā Ā
John: Thatās not good enough, Iām afraid.
Sean: [Baby noises]Ā Ā Ā
John: [Normal voice] No interesting color.
[ā¦]
John: Will you be doing any concerts while youāre staying - while youāre here?
Sean: [Baby noises]Ā
John: Yes, I thought so. You havenāt got the group together. I understand completely.Ā
Sean: [Baby noises]Ā
John: Uh, I heard you were backstage at the [Bob] Dylan concert, or was that just a rumor?
Sean: [Baby noises]Ā
John: An outright lie? My goodness.
[ā¦]
John: I was wondering what itās like being the son of such astoundingly famous, beautiful, and talented parents as John and Yoko? I wonder what itās likeā¦Ā
Sean: [Baby noises]
John: Oh, I see. I mean, could you - could you give me āĀ
Sean: [Slight cry]
John: Ah, mhmm, yes - more full⦠background into that?
Sean: [Baby noises]Ā
John: I see youāre very fascinated by this - this black box that Iām interviewing you with - this tape recorder. In fact, it seems to inhibit you a little bit. I mean, are you conscious - or self-conscious about the tape recorder?
Sean: [Baby noises]Ā
John: Well, heās turned his head away because he got very paranoid [laugh]. Itās alright, you know. Just think of it as a very dark relative.
[ā¦]
John: Elton! What about Elton [John]? Heās your godfather!
Sean: [Fussy baby noises]
John: Do you want to tell me how it is to have such a famous godfather?
Sean: [Begins to cry]
John: Well, I knowĀ you havenāt been able to see him yet. Thatās because he canāt come into the country until January!
Sean: [Continues to cry]
John: Well, letās just get him on the phone. Get his ass over here.
Sean: [Fussy baby noises]
John: Well, I think at that point weāve left the interviewee because he obviously was getting violent at the thought of not seeing Dean Martin and all those people in their prime, as it were.

Birthday surprise
ā¦my twenty-first birthdayā¦
After dinner, I was happy on sake, and Mick [Jagger] told me we were going to visit a friend. We hopped a cab to an apartment building on Sutton Place, an exclusive neighbourhood in the East Fifties, famous for housing, among other, Greta Garbo. When we got inside the building, the River House, which overlooks the East River, there was a man standing at the foot of the stairs, and he snapped a Polaroid of us. It wasnāt until he took the camera away from his face and said in an unmistakable Liverpudlian accent, āHow are you mate? This must be the birthday girlā that I knew I was meeting John Lennon. Mick is always portrayed as the flamboyant, selfish womanizer, the perpetual devil, but he really is a sweet, caring man. As I followed him into the apartment John was sharing with Mai Pang, I was so moved, I was concentrating on not bursting into tears.
John was in his ālost eighteen monthsā period, and he seemed to be in great shape. He sang āHappy Birthdayā to me on an acoustic guitar, followed by a bunch of other songs. It seemed to be that John was trying to escape from reality. I thought he was trying to have as much fun as he possibly could. (New York, 1974)

āWe decided to find a permanent home in New York in May 1974. My cramped studio on East 89th was fine for a pit stop, but it wasnāt going to work for the long term. While John was working on Pussy Cats, Eddie Germane, general manager of Record Plant Studios, told us there was an apartment available in his building.
The address was 434 East 52nd Street. The apartment we looked at was called the Penthouse Tower B. When we opened the front door, we were greeted by a steep staircase that led up to a rooftop apartment.

We brought in a platform king-size bed and the largest-screen TV available in those days: a twenty-seven-inch Sony Trinitron. Our bed became āLennon Centralā- with the cable box, telephone, and sound system all within reach. John dreamed his hit song ā#9 Dreamā in this bed.ā

I've seen different locations for this event (New York and Los Angeles) so I don't now which one is correct. I've also seen his name being spelled Jim Stacey and Jim Stacy.
