Hey so lets talk about Kai being used as the comedic character and being a lot more sillier than usual in Dragons Rising when you remember that before all this, literally just a few months beforehand, Kai was suffering the horrors tm
i’ll assume we’ve all watched the Ninjago monstrosity trailer, and if you haven’t go forth solider and may your heart crumble to pieces once you do.
In Dragons Rising, Kai’s character tone is similar to the one from season 8 onwards in the original series. Except the silliness factor is a lot stronger. He’s constantly cracking jokes, being unserious, teasing and messing with people. He was just a general menace.
And i know a lot of us, including myself, believe its cause Jay’s not around to be the comedic relief character. But what if it’s also because they’re trying to enforce a sense on unnaturalness with Kai’s attitude within us? To clue us in that the way he’s acting isn’t normal, that he’s wearing some form of a mask?
Because personally i think that would be really cool writing if Kai’s mask starts crumbling the moment they get closer to that land of monsters he was stuck in for who knows how long.
You must let go of what once was
Let it go as a wave
You must leave it all to survive
You must get back
(I will draw something actually better later I don’t have good time right now sorry folks </3)

I BROKE GUYS I HAD TO CHANGE MY PFP THAT ARTSTYLE IS SO AMAZING AND SMOOTH AND OJAHHSDBDJDH
Based off a poem I made when I was in 7th grade (under the cut)
"Change is painful," They said.
What they forgot to mention,
Is that it is unwanted.
It crawls under your skin,
And latches onto your throat.
"Change is painful," I replied.
They turned toward me,
"Yes, it is." They said,
"That is why it is inevitable."
Cooking up something I'm actually proud of
Happy monstrosity is Grey scale because I ain't coloring allat
To be completely honest, I don't really think Kai will become a centipede monster. I knowww it's sad but my reason as to why is pretty agreeable I think.
Usually, whenever a character is transformed into a monster or just a non-human in general, it's always been about accepting and overcoming parts of yourself youd rather hide. When Zane was revealed to be a nindroid, he learned that the others would accept him as their brother no matter what, and soon enough, it became a strength for him. Literally, he gained his true potential shortly after. He no longer sees him being a nindroid separate to his identity. He went from Zane, a ninja, to Zane, the titanium ninja. He's still him, always will be, just shiny :)
When Jay was turned into a Venomari, it became a reflection of his insecurities, the parts of himself he tries to mask with flashy bravado and exaggerated stories, especially around Nya, who he had a massive crush on. It ended similarly to Zane, where Nya said he would accept him no matter what. Flaws and all. Knowing this, He was able to gain his true potential too. Realizing that being himself was far better than covering it up with glitter and foundation.
Then when Cole became a ghost, it was a tragedy. He no longer felt like himself, no longer saw himself as a person. Instead a living husk of his former glory. But, with the encouragement and unyielding support of his teammates, his family, he learned to accept this new body of his, as inhuman as it was. It symbolized trauma, and the strength it takes to see the good in every bad situation. It carries later into the show, where even though he's back to being a human, the scars are still there. They will never truly go away, but he learned to accept himself as himself, weird ghost scars and all.
Lloyd is the definition of grappling with identity. From being the son of Lord Garmadon, to becoming the legendary Green Ninja, then the ultimate Spinjitzu Master, then returning to simply being the Green Ninja, knowing hes half Oni half dragon, and ultimately just Lloyd? He carries many versions of himself, each with parts he struggles to accept. He’s the textbook case of change: from idolizing his father to fearing he’ll become him. It’s this internal conflict that makes it so hard for him to see himself as anything other than a ninja. While we see him begin to accept his identity later in the series, DR shows us that he still has some ways to go before he truly feels at home in his own skin.
Nya's transformation was also just.. unwanted, in my opinion. It was about doing everything you can to protect the ones you love, even if it hurts you. She's very similar to Kai in this regard, and it's very realistic that they share similar ideals when it comes to how they view their role in the team. Nya thought that merging with the sea was the only option, and faced with Jay unconscious after drowning, she had no choice. It was unwanted change, similar to Cole. This time, however, instead of Nya bringing herself back, it was the others who brought her back. It's a beautiful way to show that family will go through hell and beyond if it means protecting the ones you love.
What does this all mean, however? Why do these transformations matter?
Well, here's an answer. Despite everything, despite the hardships, they all came out of it better. They came out of it having learned something positive about themselves, even though it scarred them tremendously. Think of it like a caterpillar. In order to transform into butterfly, they have to break down and rebuild. In the end, the transformations ended up becoming a reminder to stay strong and steadfast. And it's nice that everyone had a moment like that.
Weeelllll.... not everyone.
Kai is the only one who hasn’t undergone a non-human arc, and that’s surprising, considering he’s probably one of the first characters you'd expect to experience one. With his personality and tendency to hide things from others in fear of being shamed or shunned, an arc like that would benefit him. Right?
This is where monstrosity comes in I fear. And not in a good way.
I think this series will be contradicting what those arcs symbolized. I think it will become the opposite to what the other ninja experienced. I dont think Kai will turn into a centipede creature or just any monster in general. No, not really. And that might be confusing, because In order to survive the land of the monsters, you need to become one yourself, right?
But i still think Kai will be the only one not to undergo a non-human transformation. Not because it wont happen, but because he doesn't need to. In fact, I think it matches the others perfectly. Everyone in the team became a monster physically, but they stayed the same. Same likes, same hates, just with different colored skin or lack thereof. They didn't change, their views didn't change, their morals didn't change.
But Kais did.
And Kai is.
He is a monster.
Maybe not physically, maybe not literally,
But mentally. But his actions were.
And that's enough, isn't it?
MADE AN EDIT CUZ I FOUND AN EDITING AOO THAT ACTUALLY WORKS FOR MEEEE
Hey ninjablr are we talking about this thing??? i would like to talk about this thing
IMMEDIATELY noticed that top marking resembles "K" in Ninjargon, OR:
HIM.
Now at first I wasn't sure if that was intentional, given the added line at the bottom and the other symbol- but then I realized what the bottom shape reminded me of, having watched the Monstrosity trailer before Season 3 Part 1.
THIS? Like a very stylized version of this centipede-thing's face? Maybe?? The top symbol could also be the Fire Mech guy instead of Kai (whats with all the K's in the Land of Monsters I have so many concerns seriously)
The other shorts between season releases (What the Mech?/Wyldfyre Shorts) added some minor details to the following episodes (Kronosteel mechs/Wyldfyre character development) so if my theory holds up, maybe the Land of Monsters will have some relevance to the main plot? I'm not sure. Either way that is a Very Important Rock (in the land of Lost Things no less?) and I'm looking forward to the Lore.
That's so fair actually
This was him after going through the most traumatic event of his life btw
Monstrosity Kai desperate for one of the ninja to appear before him, desperate for one of them to appear and give him hope, desperate for one of them to save him, save him from the nightmare, save him from the horrors, save him from the hell he is in.
But most of all, desperate for one of them to save him from himself. Desperate for one of them to appear and make him see he's more than what he's become. Desperate for one of them to appear so he can just cling to one last shred of humanity, for their sake.
I admit that I rarely check my activity tab and notes, but really??
What???? 196 notes????
The post itself isn't even good (in my opinion) and my theory for the centipede mural has changed very drastically. This post is now inaccurate. Now terminating
No hate to those who actually like it!! I'm just being silly because I'm high on caffeine and it is 1:30 am!!!
Oh my fuck.
It's a loop. And the masters of fire are in the middle of it.
You can see at the start that the centipede eats who I assume is a fire elemental, who then goes through a cycle to become one of the centipedes. Then, right below it, you can see a cluster of EGGS that look eerily similar to the ones inside the centipede. Basically:
Centipede: Eat
Person: become centipede
Personpede: lay egg
Egg: become person
Repeat
Imagine Kai, after finding this out, just looks at his hands and arms and face.
And sees a monstrosity.
Are they hurting Vincent Tong in that recording studio?????????
If I don't post anything tomorrow I have died
That's how committed I am to keeping the monstrosity tag active until the series drops
Trust
Guys from the looks of it, Kai doesn’t have hair gel equipped with him in Monstrosities.
Theory time yap yap yap Theory yap time Theory time theory–
Ooooh don't even start. I have to physically stop myself from stimming whenever I think about this.
At the end, when Kai gets the bounty working, the final shot is him sailing away from the realm of monsters, taking off his cloak and hat and putting on his og Gi, then the animation just shifts to the 3d style while he silently cries his heart out. Because he's home. It's over. Even though he'll never forget what he's seen, what he's experienced, he'll sure as hell never let it tie him down.
Ooooh my boy. I didn't know you were jacked full of trauma. Dr s3 is gonna HIT my lord.
If anyone can hear me pls don't leak monstrosity
Let's all react to it simultaneously
Like rabid animals getting a singular piece of meat
Cmon
It would be so much fun
More of the same but more nontheless
He serioused now he has to silly (masking)
STOP. STOPPPPP WAITING FOR JUNE IS ALREADY HARD YOU DONT HAVE TO MAKE IT IMPOSSIBLE. BRO.
so obviously i rewatched the scene where kai and lloyd find eachother again one million times yesterday and can i mention that kai had like. bandages under his gi?
i mean. it COULD have been a crumpled shirt. but then again this is lloyd's pov. so i cant be sure.
also i was comparing the kai's clothes on the trailer and his clothes when he reunites with lloyd and theyre not only extremely different but they are VERY MUCH shit. like he's dirty and has lost his armour and cape. and i cant tell if the belt he's using on dr is the one he holds during monstrosity because the colors are different, too?? like what the hell happened bro.
and that's not even touching upon how TIRED bro is.
in this scene, the moment lloyd has his back to him, he climbs this FOUR STEPS really, really heavily. like he's having trouble moving at all.
and then
like bro it's just a mergequake. hell it's one of the earlier ones. why are you so winded that you get shown frowning TWICE and THEN ALSO breathless after it. lloyd doesn't show this kind of distress. it's just kai.
he looks miserable when he's packing up. yes he does smile at lloyd but of course he smiles at lloyd. can anyone hear me. bud are you Okay.
MONSTROSITY AMIRIGHT????????!!?!?!?!????
Kai's vision in the phantasm cave was simple. Very simple. All there was was a mirror, about the same height as him, with a black stand and body. It swayed a little in the wind, the wood creaking, maybe due to age or decay. At first, he was confused. Maybe he looked around and couldn't see anything. Maybe he just shrugged and cracked a joke about missing his reflection. Besides, what's so bad about a mirror?
Then the air changed.
Maybe it grew thicker or carried something more foreboding. Deadly. Maybe the ground felt slightly rougher, jagged rock digging into his soles more evidently, harder to ignore. Maybe his skin felt itchy, like something was crawling under it.
Maybe everything suddenly became familiar.
Then he looked back at the mirror.
And it was him.
No, not him. Him. Not the Kai, who was reliable and strong, the Kai who was everything a ninja and hero should be. It was the ugly, dirty part of him. The one who gave up their morals in order to survive. The one who he'd long thrown away and pretended never existed.
The real him.
Back in his leather robes and monster fur coat, the smell of dirt thick on his form, the katana he forged with his blood sweat and tears attached to his side. Like it always was. His face was covered, his hat planted firmly on him. It was like he never left. Or it never left him. Something wet coated his arms as his reflection stared back at him, unblinking.
And maybe Kai thought, painfully, that it was over.
Then, as suddenly as it started, everything was back again.
The whiplash was strong, but years of resilience made him good at hiding those things. He quietly looked around, maybe pinched his arm, making sure he was back. For real this time.
He could hear Nya behind him, telling Lloyd that she broke out because she knew it wasn't real. And she's right. She knew Jay could never forget her, and because of that she knew her vision wasn't real, just a fake scenario made to test her.
But Kai's vision was.
It was real.
His fear wasn't becoming a monster,
It was returning to being one.
Checked my activity for the first time in 4 days why do all my posts have. Actual reaction. Who are all you people. Why do my ramblings and shitty art have actual reblogs and notes. Waht
Ohhh its Kai isn't it. I know what you all are. Goobers.
Edit: I have followers??? That's a thing?? Uh hi everyone i WILL be mooting ya'll very soon
If I had a penny everytime a character had to go through horrors and killing monsters while slowly losing themselves and also telling themselves that they HAVE to lose themselves in order to get home to their loved ones, I would have two pennies.
Ody: so, you went through hell and back to return to your family while finding allies along the way who told you to be crueler in order to survive?
Kai: Yeah. You too?
Ody: yup.
I’ve seen people complaining Kai being too goofy in DR, but, honestly, after seeing the Monstrosity trailer, it makes sense.
We know Kai, he’s always trying to seem fine, tries to make sure no one’s worrying about him. He’s just been through hell and he knows his siblings have gone through it too. He’s overcompensating. He’s worried that if he tries to be serious for one moment, the facade will break.
And maybe he’s trying to fill the space of Jay for Nya.
Idk, this is just how I see it.
The Ninjago monstrosity trailer looks insane but my only hope is that they give us Kai looking like a sopping wet cat
I want that man to look miserable
GUSYYSYSYSS I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE IM ABOUT TO COMBUST JFZLL2PCJHGIEIJRBTNMSKSJFBNDJX
If I'm going insane over a trailer I might not watch the actual series because I'll actually die. I'm not even exaggerating it's a problem
