themes I have identified in mxtx's work:
good intentions are useless without the ability to execute them. however, that doesn't mean they aren't important
when you set yourself on fire to keep others warm the people you're trying to help usually end up burning too
consider problem solving solutions other than trading genocides back and forth
hereditary nobility is a farce
the people in charge are just as liable to be selfish, overwhelmed, greedy, and incompetent as anybody else
clear and honest communication is very important in a relationship. or else.
better late than never.

When did WWX fall in love--before he died, or after he was resurrected?
I propose a third option: both are true.
I'm very firmly in the camp of WWX being head over heels pretty much right from the start, but that ignores a lot of the emotional growth between the two of them after his resurrection. On the other hand, calling that growth "falling in love" ignores his obvious feelings right from the start, and also just doesn't seem like what's going on. His thoughts and feelings about LWJ don't really change all that much.
But here's what does change: WWX starts thinking about himself.
He starts putting himself and his needs into the equation. He goes from seeing LWJ as a trustworthy and good paragon of virtue to seeing him as someone he personally trusts. From objectively the most handsome person in existence to someone he personally really wants to sleep with finds handsome.
So it's not that he fell in love after resurrection--he loved LWJ right from the start--but also he did fall in love after resurrection, because that's when he started thinking about LWJ as someone he could be with. Not that he didn't want to be with him before; instead, he didn't have a concept of personally wanting (being able to want, being allowed to want, being allowed to have) anyone at all.
The Yiling Patriarch
“He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man.”
I really do think the fandom underestimate Xie Lian's own values and kindness while kinda overestimating the kindness the guy who gave him the Bamboo hat in the scene in the rain.
Don't get me wrong, the Bamboo hat is important and the fact that someone went to help him is also important. But it's just the excuse. Xie Lian decided by himself to lie in the rain and gave humanity another chance first. He was trying to convince himself that he didn't believe in the kindness of people anymore while still giving them another chance. He was probably going to lie in the rain until someone, anyone gave him that kindness anyway.
The Bamboo hat is the excuse as to why Xie Lian didn't turn into Jun Wu, but the actual reason is that Xie Lian had the strength to stand in the rain and wait for someone to show him he was right. A thing Jun Wu never did.
Fic idea that I'm going to write later: canon divergence AU where a superstitious group in Xianle try to sacrifice Hong-er to the gods and to BWX, believing that Hong-er falling during the parade is the reason for Xianle's decline.
Anyways, I already wrote a little something for it:
"Hong-er hit the floor harshly. All the air was pushed out of his lungs as a heavy body pounced on top of him, pinning him to the floor. He viciously yelled, punching the man on top of him in the liver. The man grunted before delivering a powerful blow to Hong-er’s face.
Hong-er’s head was thrown back from the force of it, the back of his skull colliding with the stone floor. His vision went white and his ears were left ringing.
Suddenly, hands were grabbing at him. He weakly tried to push them away but they held him in a bruising grip.
“We got him!” “Hold him down!”
“Where’s the rope?! Who has the rope?!”
“Peng Xi has it!”
“Hurry, tie his arms and legs before he can escape!”
The sound of scuffling feet surrounded Hong-er as men filled the small shine. Hong-er was manhandled onto his chest and his arms were forced behind him. He struggled against the men, but their hands remained firm, pushing him into the ground and tying the rope tightly around him.
Blood leaked from split lip and into his mouth, painting Hong-er’s teeth red as he yelled at the men."
I'll come back to this latter, I just wanted to put this somewhere.
