I Really Dislike It When People Don’t Understand Perfectionism.

i really dislike it when people don’t understand perfectionism.

like, it isn’t always “person who has tons of motivation and spends a ton of time making this thing *just* right”

wayyyyyy more often than not it’s:

”I know that if I try to make this thing, it won’t be perfect, so I simply won’t try.”

which definitely sounds bad, right? but when you realize that it doesn’t just apply to voluntarily making art, then you realize how perfectionism is not at all a good thing in any context.

“i know that if I try to work on this assignment right now, it won’t be good enough, so i’ll wait until the last possible moment so that I have something forcing me to do it.”

”i know that I should start going to the gym, but I won’t see any improvement right away, so I just won’t.”

”i know that i should brush my teeth tonight, but that won’t be good enough to undo the fact that i haven’t brushed them 4 days in a row, so I just won’t.”

perfectionism isn’t the uncontrollable impulse to make things “just right”. (although it can occasionally manifest as this.)

perfectionism is the absolute, psychological inability to accept the concepts of “good enough” and “better than nothing”. even when you spell it out for yourself in a long text post like this.

Warm Bodies (7 Days 7 Movies)

because sometimes watching a movie about the undead can make life feel worth living again. Warm Bodies (2013) takes place in an apocalyptic world filled with your typical brain-eating walking dead. Starring Nicholas Hoult and Teresa Palmer as R and Julie, ) the horror/romance (a combination of genres that sounded quite odd to me at first but works so well within the movie) takes on a love story in a comedic, dark way I haven't seen before. I first took interest in this movie simply because of Nicholas Hoult after seeing him in Skins as Tony Stonem but I ended up really liking this movie for a lot more than just the casting. If you haven't already caught on by the obvious character naming, the story is loosely based off of Romeo and Juliet and does well in referencing Shakespeares' tragedy here and there, within not only the obvious obstacles of love between zombies and humans but the persona of Julies' father and more significantly, the balcony scene - which was by far my favourite although I won't describe too much as I'd like you to watch it for yourself. In terms of writing, the dialogue and narration are witty and fun, R's inner monologue was one of the most enjoyable parts of the film, and I loved the contrast between his thoughts and physical actions. I also liked the added background, the reason as to why the undead act how they do, eat what they do, and so on. Subtle details across the board are so well done (To give an example or two: R not blinking until the water scene, colors becoming more saturated the more he becomes human) and the visuals are so damn pleasing. The soundtrack too, makes the movie what it is, after watching I was listening to Midnight City on repeat. Although not as typical, it's one of the best romances I've seen.

I hope you liked this post! be sure to let me know your thoughts and i'll be sure to take your feedback into account when writing next time! I thought I'd post this one a bit earlier than the others, and depending on the response I'll adjust my writing. until next time! Amina

guide to being the dark academic you’ve always aspired to be

1. stand in the middle of a lake staring at the way the moonlight reflects off the blood on your hands

2. start using words with more syllables because it sounds smarter and you need everyone to know how smart you are so they won’t know you bribed your way into the gentleman’s club

3. cover your chin with a black scarf so people can’t see the scar you got from turning the pages of the encyclopaedia too quickly

4. clutter your room with things that you bought from old charity shops, so you can watch them collect dust (and so you won’t have to look at that mysterious red stain on the floor)

5. buy a coffin to sleep in (you can find one secondhand if it’s too expensive - don’t worry, that just adds to the mystique).

6. string balls of cosy yarn across the floor, lest any intruders come. this way, you can catch them easily.

7. spell your name wrong to prevent identity theft

8. cut all your hair off in an attempt to become someone else and then send the locks to your neighbours (don’t provide context)

9. dig yourself a grave four feet to the left of the nearest skyscraper

10. don’t look behind your shoulder or you’ll see her. donna.

a reminder for you (but mainly for me)

the ideal university experience is a myth - all your mutuals on instagram posting about all their cool parties and cool friends don't live everyday like that, they probably don't look like that everyday either, people will only show you their best moments. people can be immature in uni just like they were in college and in school, coming to uni doesn't suddenly make you mature and neither does it make anyone else either. friendship breakups and all that petty shit happens to everyone. you're there to get a degree and not make friends, if the living environment or the people put you off, do you really want it that badly? i think i lost all my uni friends today because of a misunderstanding, some of them are in my classes and one is my flatmate who i can't avoid. but its only my foundation year and i'll meet other people next year. and when people have real jobs they have to work with people they dont like aswell, so its kinda like practice for the future. i think i'm gonna get back into movie reviews, drawing and painting again, and i was considering starting fencing? i think it would be fun. and i'm going to take my iron medication and vitamins too. because being alone isn't the end of the world. until next time (which is probably soon) Amina

update: kinda late but oh well, exam was alr but not as good as i wanted - at first i was really distraught but then i reminded myself of those supposed literature nerds who write Scrooge/Marley fanfics on ao3 and how failing literature meant i was definitely not one of them :D

English teachers, You either did something incredibly right or incredibly wrong when teaching A Christmas Carol in GCSE English because there is 34 works under the tag Jacob Marley/Ebenezer Scrooge on ao3. A few of them are tagged with references to GCSEs.

coming of age movies (because i'm 17)

Saturday 29th April 2023 - 12:17pm we're back at it again with another movie list! given the title of this post i should've posted it about two weeks ago but lifes gone down so i just haven't had the time. so without further ado... the way way back (comedy-drama, 2013) directed by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash - Duncan, with his mother, her boyfriend, and his daughter take a vacation at his potential step-dads beachhouse. Annoyed, he wanders off and meets Owen who offers him a job at Water Wizz and opens up his world. one of my favourite movies of all time, it's so so so underrated, it's one of those movies where it feels like a sneak peak into someone's life, it doesn't have that distinct movie separated-from-reality feeling to it. this movie introduced me to the phenomenal Sam Rockwell (who, by the way, is also my favourite actor ever!) and urged me to watch many movies he has appeared in. this film is close to my heart and out of all the ones on this list, i sincerely encourage you to watch The Way Way Back the most.

me, earl and the dying girl (comedy-drama, 2015) directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon - in which Greg Gaines, a socially awkward teenage boy, along with his "co-worker" Earl (who he makes short, parody films with) become friends with Rachel, a dying girl with cancer. Greg spends more and more time with Rachel and neglects school, all the while making a film just for her. despite being a little bit cliche, the film holds up rather well. although i wasn't the biggest fan of the original book (written by Jesse Andrews and of the same name). Greg is so relatable as a person, though his internal monologue isn't as true to the source material it still translates quite well from written word to film portrayal. *minor spoilers* if i had to pick a part, i love the ending of the movie where it shows Greg and Earls film, i love the scene as Rachel tells a silent story set in the walls of her room and her wishes for Greg. i think i could recite every word and direction of the script for that scene word for word the black phone (supernatural-horror, 2021) directed by Scott Derrickson - Set in the 1970s, 13 year old Finney Blake, a shy but clever boy is kidnapped by "The Grabber" a serial child abductor who keeps him held in the basement of his home, an almost completely empty room with the exception of an old black phone on the wall with it's wires cut. when Finney begins to lose hope of escape, the phone rings. when the first teaser came out for this movie back in 2020 i was so so so stoked for its release. this movie isn't gory or anything, but there is a fair bit of blood and violence involving children. it's not coming-of-age as you'd typically see it which i quite like. it gave me slight IT vibes and nostalgia from the IT era of 2017. I love how Finney develops through the story, that it's not completely ***MAJOR SPOILERS*** up to the ghosts to help him and that he does have to figure things out on his own, i like how he gives up and Robin is the last one there, i wish some more depth was added as to the background of The Grabber and the story of the phone. **END** however if you're going to watch The Black Phone, i heavily recommend NOT watching the main trailers as they essentially give the entire plot away.

i hope you liked this post! i might make this into a series as coming-of-age movies are my favourite genre that's all for now!

giving me ideas on how to ruin statues rn

In the town where I grew up, there was a large statue in one of the parks, of a famous historical white colonizer. I'm not going to say who specifically, suffice it to say that it was someone who wasn't worth memorializing for their deeds. And as you can imagine, this statue was a frequent target of vandalism, with paint or toilet paper or eggs on multiple occasions. Now, the local council was generally pretty lax when it came to repairing potholes or other public damage in the town, but every time, 24 hours after this particular statue was hit, the same person would always appear in a Hi-Vis vest, hat, mask and sunglasses, carrying a bucket of water, and wash it clean. They would do it as quickly as possible, but always made sure the face and the name carved at the bottom were generously scrubbed. This only encouraged people to do it again, and so it became a vicious cycle.

Within a year, the statue had sustained so much damage that it was unrecognizable and the lettering unreadable, so eventually the council came and took it down. Also apparently, the person in the Hi-Vis vest didn't even work for the council. They were supposedly just some 'good samaritan' who cleaned it, often before the council even discovered it needed cleaning, so they just let them do it and ignored the problem. They didn't bother putting the statue up again.

Much later, we found out that the anonymous 'samaritan' had been deliberately washing the statue with a bucket of saltwater, which had dramatically corroded it, causing irreversible accumulative damage far worse than spray paint ever would have done. It's even theorized that they were also often the one spray-painting it, just so that they had an excuse to come back after a day to wash it.
