The reason Battler has a veil--part of Battler's epiphany is surely the realization that the truth cannot actually be seen in reality unless it is in some sense concealed. In order to "grasp" Sayo he must accept the logic by which Sayo hides herself.

This becomes. Substantially funnier. Knowing who his voice actor is.

krauss ushiromiya has to be the just. guy of all time. i think the funniest thing is when he's introduced, he's by far the worst of the siblings. deeply stupid, domineering, leverages past abuse against his siblings, disrespects his wife big time.

and then he dies soon in the next two timelines. and then in the next one we learn he was even WORSE as a teen, being just disgustingly sexist.

and then. everything after that that we learn about him is. neutral to better? like you get the worst over first.

like. okay. he recognizes how awful he was as an older brother and accepts that his siblings would be justified to hate him for the rest of their lives. okay, too little too late, put him in the juicer. he'd be supportive of his daughter's relationship to one of the servants? ...clearly an illusion, doesn't mean anything. oh he survived the initial salvo of ch4 and is revealed to be good in a crisis? that wasn't a fluke last time? al...right? has moments of being a not terrible husband? ...i mean. damage control. was his wife's only ally after she got dragged into a humiliating arranged marriage, and took her lots of places during honeymoon to try to make up for that? ...huh. is ready to divorce his wife and daughter so that, when the family collapses from his terrible business decisions, they'll be spared and only he will be ruined? ...surprisingly...good? he's surprisingly good to the servants? what. what is happening.

even better is that it's in contrast to eva getting a lot Worse (and then better really late!), rudolf having a rollercoaster of getting better and worse and better adn then a lot worse, and rosa being a constant trainwreck you just keep getting details of. like after his ch3 flashbacks it's uphill.

the funniest part, though, is that he is objectively the least problematic of the Ushiromiya siblings/their spouses. never murders anyone in any timeline, and never does any child abuse. like it's just so funny that he starts out the worst and then ends up with by far the least blood on his hands.

Mild hot take but I don't think a Gnostic or Buddhist or Kabbalistic reading of Revolutionary Girl Utena is necessarily incorrect. I'm used to people dismissing readings based on those assumptions out of hand but I don't think that's quite fair.

Not that this layer cancels out the more obvious and central stuff about gender and fairy tales of course, especially given how heavily gendered Gnostic and especially Kabbalistic symbolism is.

(A thorough reading of Utena from a Kabbalistic symbolism lens sounds interesting but very much beyond me at least, lol. Maybe if I ever read Wolfson and Idel.)

Still while I'm confident the show does flirt with more esoteric and mystical ideas I don't think it views organizations built around those ideas very fondly. Most esotericism is premised on exclusiveness coming from possession of secret knowledge and the groups which position themselves on that ground (the Black Rose society and to a lesser extent the Student Council itself) are portrayed as cults, more or less.

K, so a couple weeks ago I went on a lovely bus trip to the Art Institute of Chicago, and being the WWDITS hyperfixed and Nandor obsessed little nerd that I am, I was on the lookout for anything Persian related AND anything that felt like "Nandorcore" to me. :P

And I found a few things!!

The first pieces of pottery are actual Persian artifacts adorned with some interesting designs and illustrations and even some writing. (It's too bad they don't have translations for those poems though.) They are, judging by the info cards, a bit before Nandor's time, but they definitely still fit into the aesthetic I was hunting for (esp those two with horse illustrations!)

The last piece, a South Asian vase from Nepal, is NOT Persian, but the jewels and shiny copper covering give such an overall regal/royal vibe that came across as very Nandor-esque to me, so I included it in this set.

So anyway! Yeah! Just Nandor things.

The great Chennakeshava Temple, Karnataka, India. It is filled with carvings and other art works of minute details . There Are 48 large pillars in the main hall. It took 103 years to construct this Temple ( not a surprising thing when you look at the carvings). It is painful to know that this Temple is not well recognized.
