Thank You Scientist – Swarm (8-Bit Version)

Thank You Scientist is a seven-piece band playing jazz fusion progressive metal, my favorite! Their new album is streaming in lots of places including YouTube. The band’s drummer, Faye Fadem, thought Swarm would sound cool as a chiptune, so she made it happen. The title says “8-Bit”, but the SNES samples and K.K. Slider vocals say otherwise.

Chart Party – The search for the saddest punt in the world

Sports geekery is geekery like anything else. SB Nation's Chart Party answers tricky questions by doing deep dives into a vast amounts of statistics. The show has tackled what if Barry Bonds didn't have a bat and just how profoundly bad the Cleveland Browns are. This one's still my favorite. It uses a complex formula to determine how "sad" a punt is, and then runs it on every punt in the modern NFL. This inspired me to do my own absurdly complicated formula to decide what retro games I should put on my handhelds' limited storage space. I might report on that later, but I should stop punting and finish a blog post already.

Corruption as Art – Go Straight (remix EP)

Corruption as Art uses a real-time corruptor mod for BizHawk to flip random bits in memory while a game is running. Usually this just crashes the game, but sometimes things break in interesting ways. When applied to Streets of Rage 2, the music keeps playing but goes out of sync and creates strange remixes. Be warned that some posts, like How to Draw Kirby, feature “extreme flashing”. Lately I’ve been tearing things down and putting them back together in better organized ways, but this has introduced some glitches.

Here’s a new bandcamp thing I put out just now, I’ll be sure to come up with clever track names and stuff like that when I get home from work later but the tracks are all there for your ears i guess

Dr. Fatbody - Sonic the Hedgehog 1 at AGDQ2019

Awesome Games Done Quick 2019 brought us a Sonic 1 run by Dr. Fatbody, a highly entertaining player with the speed and precision of a yung Wumbo. He tries risky tricks that backfire sometimes and will goof off a little for style. When everything works, he’s really fast! He reminds me of my own playaround style, and now I know why. He’s also from the fighting game community and plays Zangief in Street Fighter V! It all makes perfect sense now.

Rockson Film Production

We don't often see movies from Ghana, but Rockson Emmanuel blesses us with these outrageous trailers that regularly feature at Anime Hell. He's still working on it. Good for him! Get out there and create weird, cool stuff.

I'm questioning if the move to Tumblr last year was a good idea. My feeds are panicking about stuff getting flagged! Tumblr might suffer the same fate as other services Yahoo bought. It's too much work to write the same post on WordPress and Tumblr, and all the linked text is lost on Facebook and Twitter cross-posts anyway.

Mystery Skulls Animated – Ghost

Mystery Ben makes animated music videos for Mystery Skulls songs. Ghost could have been a simple Scooby Doo parody, but every second seems to have important details for TV Tropes to analyze. This attracted a far bigger fandom than the official live action music video, prompting Mystery Ben to continue the series…

Mystery Skulls Animated – Freaking Out

With the success of Ghost, Mystery Ben planned several more videos to continue the story and flesh out the characters. This second video is Freaking Out. I’m sure they could all talk out their problems if they all weren’t constantly bobbing their heads to the music. We had to wait for 2½ years for the next one…

Mystery Skulls Animated – Hellbent

A few days ago, Mystery Ben dropped the long-awaited third chapter, Hellbent. This fast-paced multi-level revenge quest goes above and beyond what anyone would expect from a music video. There are loads of callbacks to the first two videos. Please don’t make us wait two more years to resolve the next cliffhanger!

TerminalMontage – Something About Super Mario 64

Super Mario 64 is fun to speedrun and fun to break. YouTube animator TerminalMontage captures this pretty accurately in this animated 0-star speedrun. I’m heading to GDEX to play some local indie games and break them, of course. EDIT: GDEX got too serious and too expensive, so I actually didn't go.

Yuumei – Glass Instruments

Hi, blog! It’s been a couple months! I almost forgot how to do these posts. Yuumei, designer of the original Cat Ear headphones, painted some musical instruments made of glass. I wonder how they would sound. Crystal flutes exist, and I imagine string instruments would sound pretty normal too. When hitting a drum with water in it, the air and the water would make two different sounds at the same time. Then there’s the fish tank piano, which would take physical strength to play but make super deep, eerie tones. Underwater performances are possible!

Super Mario Land 2 – Memory Exploration

Retro Game Mechanics Explained is an educational video series from Super Mario World speedrunner Dotsarecool. In Super Mario Land 2, it’s possible to glitch yourself right out of the map and into other regions of the Game Boy’s address space. Wandering around those garbage tiles and randomly flipping bits will usually crash the game, but it’s possible to trigger the ending credits from there. This reminds me of the game-breaking screen warp glitch I played around with in The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening v1.0.

sh/f Super Fireball Battle

Now that I’ve got all my WordPress posts on Tumblr, what should I do with it? How about I introduce a tool-assisted video Sonic Hurricane debuted at Evo2k10? Evenly matched projectiles and beams clash like it’s Dragon Ball Z. This video got me into Shinichi Osawa’s album The One and the soundtrack to DoDonPachi Resurrection Black Label.

Oddheader – 100 Things You Didn't Notice in Tony Hawk Games

In the PlayStation 2 era, I spent thousands of hours playing the Tony Hawk games online and making levels and videos. We’d get out of bounds and explore behind the scenes, and sometimes find the developers left some easter eggs for us. Oddheader has compiled the community’s findings into one epic 24-minute video that takes us through Neversoft’s entire run with the series.

The transition from WordPress to Tumblr is about 75% complete. 108 WordPress posts became 120 Tumblr posts (20 are Tumblr reblogs). I lose the mouseover text on images, Twitter embeds, and email updates, but most things work and I’ve fixed about a dozen broken links.

Shattered Skies – The End and the Rebirth

Hello from Tumblr! I’ve been thinking, and I realize that my WordPress blog posts are basically Tumblr posts anyway. I might as well make it a Tumblr blog because I lose almost nothing. I plan to re-make all of my WordPress posts as proper Tumblr posts, properly reblogging the Tumblr stuff this time to comply with the posters’ wishes. For instance, my post for PiNe’s illustrations will become reblogs of every image when possible. Once I learn to Tumblr properly and get my theme and cross-posts working correctly, this is going to be good.

Kaplamino – The blue marble

Domino builder Kaplamino also experiments with Rube Goldberg contraptions like PythagoraSwitch. Here, Kaplamino challenged himself to launch a tiny blue marble all over a tilted table in using clever magnet tricks. All these unstable setups arranged in 2D make me want to play some Incredible Machine.

Really Bad Chess

Really Bad Chess is a randomized chess game for iOS and Android. Both sides often start with several bishops and knights up front and multiple queens in the back. Never mind protecting all your pieces; both players’ material is going to get bodied for free.

When not occupied with yet another mobile game, I’ve been distracted by the hallway thing in the background, bootleg Famiclones, current events, and feeds getting added, dropped, and shut down. If you want to see more of the kinds of stuff I post, I suggest following TwistedSifter and Something Random.

PiNe – Trick or Treat!

I haven’t done one of these artist posts in over a year. Let’s fix that with PiNe. PiNe delivers vivid scenes and cool character designs in a handy RSS feed.

When I saw this on today's Pixivision Halloween post, I knew today I'd have to post this too. Google Translate translates the Japanese title to "I do not have to make sweets!"

Two-Factor Authentication

Two-Factor Authentication

Equifax just leaked our personal information to hackers! That’s really bad! It’s enough information that an identity thief could steal your cell phone service and start receiving text messages intended for you. It’s time to beef up security with an authenticator app. Most important Internet services allow you to generate codes with your phone that you enter when you log in. I use Authy for this because it backs up and restores all your two-factor tokens when switching phones or doing factory resets.

Since my phone was in the shot, I had to take this photo with my 3DS. That's why you can't read any of the text. (And yes, you can use Authy with Tumblr.)

My Pandora Radio Stations

My Pandora Radio Stations

Pandora is still the best at finding music that is musically similar to other tracks you like. With a little patience and a little luck, it’s possible to train Pandora to hit all the right notes. I listen to a lot of different music so I have a list of stations for whatever I feel like at the moment.

Metal Mash-Up – updated off and on since 2005 with all the kinds of metal I like Expert Mode – prog rock and guitar solos that would be difficult in Guitar Hero Fun – a catch-all for punk rock, nerd rock, electropop, and much more Electronic Skill – hard EDM and industrial you’d hear in frag videos Chippy Jams – chiptunes, game soundtracks, and other tracker-sounding music Sequencer Beats – DJ grooves and hip hop instrumentals for chillin’ and Marvel Lyrical Hip Hop – only real MCs and classics, no repetitive radio-friendly rap here Wheel of Pandora – randomly plays any genre on Pandora; use in shuffles! Hitstun’s QuickMix (autoplay) – all of the stations above shuffled together

I'm aware I've got a couple stations reversed in the bottom row. You know, I almost didn't put an image in this post, but it would have looked way out of place for a post to not have a featured image. My one extension that grabs YouTube video thumbnails probably would have put that Quake 3 video's preview image in there, but this post isn’t about Quake 3.

Neon FM

Tokyo Attack came to Matsuricon again and introduced me to  Neon FM, a button-drumming music game with some neat features. If you fail a song, the game drops the difficulty level a little and lets you keep playing. The arcade, iOS, and Android versions all work about the same and even support online multiplayer matches between them. I want to try that sometime but the closest arcade with Neon FM is in the developer’s home town of Baltimore.

I thought Orange Lounge Radio had an interview with the developer, but the wiki had no mention of it. Maybe I've got it mixed up with the Kyle Ward interview in episode 596 where he talks about ReRave's arcade and mobile versions. I'm confused.

Adam Ruins Everything

I love it when people quickly drop knowledge and debunk misconceptions with proper research, and we need it now more than ever. Here is Adam Conover, a comedian who can appear in any unfair situation and demolish it with cold hard facts whether you like it or not. This show started as a CollegeHumor series before getting a remake on Court TV or something.

Upside-down Compositions – Pixivision

Upside-down Compositions – pixivision

When you see a picture with a person upside-down, reality might be broken somehow. Maybe the room is constructed upside-down. Maybe a character isn’t falling downwards for some reason. It’s probably just a reflection anyway. I unsubscribed from dozens of my RSS feeds until I could clear my 2,500-item RSS backlog. One of the survivors is pixivision, formerly pixiv Spotlight.

Illustrations where characters are upside-down or where the background is inverted are called upside-down compositions. There’s no doubt about the fact that you’re gonna be curious about these extraordinary compositions, and will wonder “what exactly is portrayed here?”. These compositions have a light, carefree feeling to them, and will make you want to float along with the characters in them.

This time we collected a number of upside-down compositions, that will make your head turn (or you can just flip your smartphone or PC screen!). Enjoy!

Yes, I'm spelling pixiv with a lowercase P now. And just like last time I posted a pixivision article (then called pixiv Spotlight), I'm presenting this image the way it appears in my RSS feed, or at least how it used to before the format changed a little bit. I have no idea what this illustration's title translates to. Clicking the image will take you to the pixivision post.

Bill Wurtz – history of the entire world, i guess

Bill Wurtz followed up on his history of japan video with history of the entire world, i guess. It concisely covers the formation of the universe, the beginnings of life on Earth, and all of human civilization in a wonderful 20 minute acid trip.

So, um, I left the title of the video in all lowercase. Should I stop correcting names and titles to standard English capitalization? I might go undo all the capitalization changes I made, like the capital P I was using for “pixiv“. My username used to be a case-insensitive “hitstun”, like the fighting game term, but I tend to use “Hitstun” more now. I’ll do this when I’m not three weeks behind on Feedly I mean feedly.

Shuey's Perfect Clear Study (Phase 2 - Sparta!)
