This Is The Paucidentomys Vermidax, The Edented Sulawesi Rat. It Lives In Remote Rainforest Areas On

This is the Paucidentomys vermidax, the edented Sulawesi rat. It lives in remote rainforest areas on the Indonesian island that is part of its name. It is the only rodent without molars, which it doesn't need because its diet is likely entirely made up of soft, easy to chew earthworms.

Discovered only in 2012, it is one of the most recent species of rodent (and mammal) to be described.

I hope everyone understands, when I say “most endangered habitat on earth”, I mean temperate grasslands.

They’re more endangered than tropical rainforests, coral reefs, the arctic tundra, all of those go-to environments that get more of the spotlight.

Where I live, maybe 25% of the prairie remains in a natural state and that number is dropping. Even these fragments are mostly missing the keystone species that maintain their health, like bison, wolves, and prairie dogs. I know this is the case for other grasslands like the pampas and steppe as well. Vast lands empty of many species that used to call them home.

If you live on temperate grasslands, hold onto them tight, because they’ve been exploited like no other land and most people don’t even know how far the devastation goes.

I Hope Everyone Understands, When I Say “most Endangered Habitat On Earth”, I Mean Temperate Grasslands.

I will never understand the "mouse good and cute, rats evil and icky" stuff in media. It's everywhere, and it's... weird.

"Rats are more violent than mice" is true... but "rats spread more disease than mice" is not, and "rats aren't as cute as mice" makes no sense if you just... look at real ones.

Like... real rats looks nothing like the demonized rat caricatures you see. They just look like bigger mice with longer muzzles. They're not sharper or rougher anywhere.

I don't get it....

Where does it even come from? It's not like the people who have to deal with mice and rats would like mice.

this is sort of cousins with my favorite practice, which is replying "yeah, that's what i've been saying" after any weird sound or audible bodily function.

roommate's cat: mrorow?

me: yeah, that's what i've been saying!

I enjoy adding "as one does" in parentheses after describing a strange thing to do (as one does).

Animal of the Day!

Bramble Cay Melomys (Melomys rubicola)

Animal Of The Day!

(Photo from State of Queensland)

Extinction Date- 2015

Habitat- Bramble Cay

Size (Weight/Length)-16 cm

Diet- Succulents; Turtle eggs

Cool Facts- The Bramble Cay melomys may seem like an insignificant rodent, but these little guys were officially known as the first mammal to go extinct due to climate change. Found on a tiny island off the northern tip of the Great Barrier Reef, these melomys were threatened by a mixture of storms and rising sea level as the entire Cay was only 3 meters above sea level. During surveys, the last known Bramble Cay melomys was spotted in 2009 and they were officially declared extinct in 2015. Their extinction was a massive wakeup call for mammalian extinctions due to anthropocentric change. The Cape York melomys remains on mainland Australia is considered least concern thanks to preservation of their natural habitat and attempts of eliminating invasive species like foxes, cats, and rabbits.

Rating- 12/10 (Forever remembered.)

there are many such big guys like this

does anyone else ever think about how the capybara has a drastic impact on the average rodent size? like mice, rats, squirrels, etc. are all roughly the same size, but then the capybara comes along and gives the impression to everyone who forgot it that the average rodent is much bigger than a squirrel

Animal of the Day!

Malagasy Giant Jumping Rat (Hypogeomys antimena)

Animal Of The Day!

Conservation Status- Critically Endangered

Habitat- Central-western Madagascar

Size (Weight/Length)- 1 kg; 30 cm; 25 cm tail

Diet- Fruits; Seeds; Bark

Cool Facts- The malagasy giant jumping rat might be the most rabbit-looking rodent. Despite their relatively small size, these rats can leap 90 centimeters directly into the air to avoid predators. Spending their days inside burrows, their homes are large complexes with many different entrances to allow for quick escapes. Malagasy giant jumping rats are not monogamous but pairs will stick together to raise their offspring after the breeding season. Sadly, due to habitat destruction and large populations of feral cats, these rats are confined to only 200 square kilometers of protected forest. Multiple off site captive breeding programs in zoos and sanctuaries hope to preserve this absolutely adorable rat.

Rating- 13/10 (Hippity hoppity, get off my property.)

Happy Neil Day (again) !!

A digital drawing of a hairless rat playing a purple keyboard with rainbow piano keys. Yellow, red, and blue music notes are to the left of the rat. Purple, green, and orange music notes are to the right of the rat.
There are three primary colored stars above the rat's head.

Three arrows point to a yellow explosion shape above the rat. Two of the arrows are on the left side. One of the arrows is yellow and squiggly, and the other is blue.
The arrow of the right of the image is red and zigzagged.
The text above the rat reads, "Neil banging out the tunes" with two smaller purple music notes above the word "tunes"
