Damian is 8 years old when he first comes to live with his father. Heās all harsh glares, standoffish arm folding, and clever barbs aimed at everyoneās vulnerable points. Heās also adorable. Small enough for Bruce to pick up with little to no effort, with big green eyes and baby fat still in his cheeks.
Bruce is overwhelmed with emotions heās terrible at expressing; shock at the fact that he has a biological child, furious that said child was kept from him for 8 years, devastated that the child was robbed of a normal upbringing and instead raised in a cult of death and devout loyalty to a madman, and overjoyed that this little boy has his nose, his eyebrows, and the same black curls he got from Martha Wayne. He mourns the moments and milestones heās missed. First steps, first word, potty training, learning to read and write. He doesnāt even know if Damian can ride a bike.
Then, six months into living with Bruce, Damian loses a tooth. A lateral incisor, by the looks of it. Not because of a hit to the face or a Robin-related incidentāno, itās just the natural, logical conclusion to a loose baby tooth Damian hadnāt mentioned having until he bit into an apple at breakfast and pop! Out comes the tooth, stuck to the apple, leaving the boy with a gap just left of center in his smile.
This hasnāt happened since Dick. Jason and Tim had lost all their baby teeth before Bruce took them in, but Dick had been so young. Bruce remembers the angry 9 year old who just wanted revenge marching to the Cave, presenting him with a molar and pouting silently for hours. It had taken a mug of hot chocolate to get him to admit that Mary Grayson always sang him a special song when he lost a baby tooth, to congratulate him for being one step closer to adulthood, but he couldnāt remember all the words and Bruce, my mamaās not here, who do I give my teeth to? What do I do now?
Bruce has no idea what Talia did when Damian lost baby teeth. All he knows is that heās on his feet and rushing toward the boy and getting his arms around him andā
āFather!ā Damian will never admit to the indignant squawk that escapes him when Bruce plucks him from his seat and holds him close. āAre youāā
Bruce settles Damian on his hip with one arm and cards his other hand through the boyās soft curls. He breathes in the scent of apple shampoo and oatmeal soap while peppering his forehead with kisses.
āI will get you a new pet,ā he says softly, resting his cheek atop his sonās head. āA kitten, a puppy, anything you want. Justā¦let me have this, baby boy.ā
Damian instantly stops protesting. He huffs and poutsāwhich, oh my fucking God, how is he so precious?āas he wraps his arms around his fatherās neck.
āThat isā¦acceptable,ā he grumbles. Bruce kisses his cheek and smiles into his hair.
Thatās how Damian gets Titus.
Clark: Bruce are you okay?? Your heartbeat is going crazy do I need to call someone?
Bruce: hm (negative)
Clark: Bruce how long has it been since you slept
Bruce: hn (neutral)
Clark, eyes narrowed: Bruce.
Bruce: 2
Clark: Two, what? Two days?
Bruce: hmā¦.. (negativ)
Clark: TWO WEEKS?
Bruce:
Clark: HOW ARE YOU EVEN STILL ALIVE
Bruce: Iām not alive. Iām Batman

I have this headcanon that Duke is like⦠the only person who can shit talk Damian to his face and everyone else is flabbergasted bc like- its damian, but Duke lives with the guy and actually has no chill, so Damian allows it because⦠Dukeās like⦠his closest brother because they live together.. like-
Damian: *scowling around at people at a very important social event* Dick: *trying to get him to smile* Duke: *flatly, snaps his fingers twice in Damianās direction* Fix your face Critter Dick: *ready to hold Damian back if he attacks* Damian: *bats Dukeās hand away, but smooths out his expression and almost looks⦠normal* ~ Duke and Jason: *having a discussion* Damian: *walks in* D+J: *laugh* Damian: What am I missing? Duke: *without missing a beat* a few inches of height Jason: *agog* Damian: *rolls eyes* ~ Robin: I need to get to the top of that wall Signal: You do? Damn. Thats a shame. *whistles* Damian: *scowling* Duke: Do you have something to ask, short stack? Dick: *ready to intervene on Dukeās behalf* Damian: *through gritted teeth*Ā Could you help me up the wall, Signal? Please. Duke: *smirks. Yeets him up* Dick: *gagged* Bruce: *used to it, sighs*
Damian is de-aged to a baby and lost in Gotham. A magic user hit him with some kind of spell. His legs donāt work as well and he has trouble walking. Thatās when a man appears and squats down with a tilt of his head.
āYea, you are definitely not supposed to be out here, little guy.ā
Damian glares at the man, early twenties, stubble along his jaw, ragged clothes, and dark bags under his eyes.
The man turns his head to look at the brick wall.
āAre you sure?ā
And now he was talking to a wall. Curses. Of course he would be found by a crazy person.
The man suddenly hangs his head with a deep sigh. He regains himself quickly and stands. Moving closer to put his hands under Damian arms to lift him to perch on his hip.
Damian squirms to get down but refuses to make a sound. The last time he opened his mouth like this it was a pathetic baby sound. He couldnāt let this man see him like this.
āLooks like youāre coming home with me, little guy. I can tell youāve got some spirit in you. Good, youāll need it.ā
Not ominous at all.
Damian stays with the man, mostly because he couldnāt physically drive a car, but also because he was almost always with him. The man would talk to air at the most random times. Obviously a schizophrenic. But Damian had to admit this man, Danny he comes to find out through a neighbor baby talking at him, has been genuinely trying to take care of him and take care of him well. Well, to the best of his abilities anyway. ļæ¼
He feeds him organic purĆ©es that donāt taste half bad, except the carrots, that one was unacceptable. Danny cleans him regularly despite his crappy apartment and makes sure he is dressed appropriately for the weather. He makes an effort to take him out to the park to play in the sandbox or just walk around discovering ānewā things.
Damian doesnāt need a parent, he outgrew the concept when he was five and technically he already had one, but he could tell Danny would make an excellent father. Some mistakes can be overlooked compared to the effort he was putting in.
The only concerning thing was the talking to thin air. It took Damian an embarrassing amount of time to figure out the reason Danny was visiting all these random people and the graveyard. (Sometimes he will set Damian down to āplayā in the grass at the cemetery. It was quite odd.)
He was talking to ghosts. It wasnāt thin air or imaginary friends, no it was actually dead people. The reason Damian actually believes this is for two reasons.
One, Danny shows true results. Damian observes closely whenever they visit a āclientā and Danny always has accurate information despite never looking up or researching anything going in.
Two, he never calls himself a medium or psychic. He doesnāt boast about his ability to see ghosts. He does what he does to help the ghosts move on to the other side. Closure is what Danny always says. Closure for the family and the victim. In Gotham, there are a lot of victims.
Damian adjusts to his new life with Danny. Itās been five months and heās getting used to being small and vulnerable. Heās allowed to be messy and whiny and childish. Danny never scolds him like Mother did. The man has never hit him or raised his voice at him and never expects anything from him. He encourages his progression to speak and walk, but doesnāt expect the best out of him.
Itās⦠nice. A good break if anything.
They are at the park when one of the bats spot him and pauses. Danny is blowing bubbles into the air and Damian tries to pop as many as he can. Itās a silly game with no clear rules, but Damian finds it entertaining nonetheless.
āHi there! Is he yours?ā
Dick Grayson wears a bright smile, but Damian can see the tightness around his eyes.
āHuh? Oh, yea, this is Damian,ā Danny answers.
He had written it with the wooden blocks Danny had given him one week in. Danny took one look at the name on the ground, laughed loudly and ran with it.
āDo you mind if I say hi? Heās so cute.ā
Danny looks puzzled by the request but ends up shrugging his shoulders, not seeing a problem with letting a stranger get close to Damian. (Damian knew Dannyās intense eyes were watching Dickās every move. He was very protective like that.)
āSure.ā
Dick squats down to search Damianās green eyes. Damian stares back just as intensely.
āHey there, Damian. My name is Dick.ā
Damian gives him a flat look at Dickās terrible introduction.
āGrayson.ā
Although with his little baby teeth not fully in it sounds more like āway-shahā.
Relief flashes across Dickās face and he gives Damian a reassuring smile. Itās not as reassuring at he thinks it is. It promises to bring him home and restore him to his original age. Damian doesnāt know if thatās what he wants anymore.
Dick stands and gives Danny some imaginary excuse to leave quickly. Damian watches him go and so does Danny.
āFunny guy, huh Dami?ā
Damian doesnāt respond and Danny notices his change in mood.
āCome here, little guy.ā
He knows what Danny is going to do and willingly goes. He is pulled up into the manās lap and held between two surprisingly muscular arms. Dannyās hugs are nice and warm. They arenāt too tight like Dickās nor are they stiff like Bruceās. He never thought he could enjoy human contact, but Danny has been showing him things about himself he didnāt ever know. Turns out he does like hugs and playing airplane and when Danny runs his fingers through his hair when heās really sleepy.
āLetās go home a little early today, huh? Iāll make spaghetti and you can be as messy as you want,ā Danny promises.
Damian hums. Yes, that sounds nice.
That night Batman comes in through the window. Damian is waiting.
āDamian,ā Batman whispers.
āBah-mun.ā
The flat, unamused stare is what gives him away.
Batman lets out a breath silently and reaches into the crib Danny had gotten him.
āI wouldnāt do that if I were you.ā
Batman jerks into action, twisting to face Danny who had appeared suddenly. The door behind him is still closed.
Batman stays quiet, silently studying the man before him dressed in pajama pants and a worn t-shirt.
Danny tilts his head as he does the same. Damian has never seen the man so serious. He silently worries for the man. He didnāt want him getting hurt to unnecessarily protecting him from his father.
āIād have to break your arm if you tried to do what it looks like youāre doing.ā
Danny says it so plainly. So simple.
Batman straightens.
āHe isnāt yours.ā
He doesnāt say Damian is his. He doesnāt claim him as his own. Just that Danny shouldnāt have him.
Damian silently agrees because technically heās right. He doesnāt deserve Danny. He canāt keep playing house like heās an actual baby. But Damian is also selfish and over the last few months has been taught that itās okay to ask for things he wants even if itās not inherently beneficial. The stuffed dog he sleeps with every night is proof of that.
So Damian says nothing.
āHe is now,ā Danny answers simply like there was no other answer to such a statement.
āHe needs to go back to where he belongs.ā
āOver my dead body,ā is the immediate response.
They stare each other down until Danny scoffs.
āDonāt think Iām not petty enough to fight you, Batman. Iāll fight anyone who wants to take him from me. Damian is mine.ā
When Batman tries to forcibly take him, he ends up with a concussion, a blood nose, and two broken arms. Red Robin finds him in a dumpster the next morning.
The story continues with Damian learning how to be a child his age, Danny protecting him and doting on his brilliant son, and the Batfamās frequent failed attempts to kidnap Damian back to them.
Bruce is a chronic napper
He loves taking naps. Go into his study, the library, the indoor pool. Doesnāt matter, heāll find some place to take a quick nap
As funny as the whole Dad snore headcannon is, I think Bruce is a quiet and light sleeper
You wonāt even notice heās in the room as he naps.
Over the years, the batfamily has gotten pretty good at guessing where heās napping. If they arenāt tracking him down for a particular reason itās mostly to nap with him
Damian loves curling up on his fatherās chest (looking like a cute kitten, but he resents that so donāt say anything). He says he's just protecting Bruce's vital organs but no one believes him. They have the same sleeping face and itās adorable.
Dick also loves curling up on Bruceās chest. Thank the lord Bruce is still significantly bigger than him. It always reminds him of when it was just the two of them, back when he was smaller and Bruce could still protect him against the world.
Jason can no longer curl up on Bruceās chest so he settles for nestling himself in Bruceās side. He always tells himself that heāll be out before Bruce wakes up, but he always falls asleep, and the next thing he knows Bruce has his arm wrapped around him and he canāt escape. Not that he wants to
Tim likes to finish up easy cases right next to Bruce. Despite their turbulent time working together as Batman and Robin, he still finds a lot of comfort in Bruce. He can breeze through the easy cases and then shut his eyes for a bit with his dad.
Cass is always there. When she gets there, no one knows. But she always brings a blanket so itās much appreciated. Sheās the one that naps with Bruce the most, other than Ace.
Alfred likes to sit and just watch Bruce breathe. Itās comforting to know that heās still alive after years of close calls.
Surprise!
Headcanon that a fact very rarely known about Damian Wayne al Ghul, son of Bruce What emotion am I feeling today Wayne, is that he's a crier. Whenever he's having a bad day, the only thing that can fix it and make him feel better is a long, hard cry.
Of course, he's learned to cry completely silently (growing up in the league that viewed every supposed weakness as lethal will do that to you). He's also very good at compartmentalization and can push it down until he has time and privacy enough to let go.
When he first came to the manor, it was in the in suite bathroom behind two locked doors with the shower running. Once he started trusting him, it was on his eldest brother's shoulder.
The day he goes to Bruce to be held when he's crying, his father goes wide eyed, heart so full of love it hurts and it's like finding he has a son all over again.
this is Jason in every single fucking universe when he had the chance to kill bruce
