It uhhh…. It sure is something. I got the notes to play at more or less the right times, and I consider that an accomplishment. I later tried pitching down an irl violin for the “cello” and it was somewhat promising. The chorus bit is the waltz and it… exists.

what I really like about all these vintage couple’s portraits is that there is a very certain romatic decorum kept up – certain themes and poses – which, while of course being the mainstream preferred view of couples repeated throughout many studios, are just… so nice to look at. 

this staged affection, a mix of theatricality and intimacy, the couple holding still for a couple of moments and now immortalised in a very set sequence of embraces and kisses. there is a charm to it even when I can’t tell whether this was a genuine couple portait or just actors hired by the photographer.

the kiss on the bare shoulder (eyes perfectly averted), the cheek caress, the piano and the violin, the interrupted embrace, the woman tilted back as in a half-stopped dance…

I didn't realize I hadn't drawn Arthur properly so—I also didn't realize I hadn't set up an art blog and had just been dumping art randomly across my side accounts LOL. ANYWAY

After killing Larson, Arthur and John leave Addison. They end up in a motel for the night, and when Arthur’s emotions and traumas from the past few months bubble over into an inevitable breakdown, he finally communicates with John just what has happened the past few days and why Larson’s blood has ended up on his hands.

There’s blood on Arthur’s hand. He can feel it between his fingers, tacky and warm, sticking his skin to the handle of the dagger.

But he’s had blood on his hands since the day he cradled his daughter’s dead body in his arms. At least now, the literal matches the metaphorical.

He forces his fingers to uncurl from around the dagger. It clatters to the floor, loud in the silence that has overtaken the room. The echo of it is long, but Arthur thinks he imagines it longer. The room is large, the ceilings of the front hall of the manor vaulted and glittering with an intricate glass chandelier. The sound pings from surface to surface until it fades beyond human perception. (Inhuman perception as well, he supposes. Monstrous perception.)

composed by the incredibly talented harlan guthrie, transcribed by me! for the music box theme, i've included instructions for both playing it as the original music box version as well as kayne's solo variation. i used musescore to notate these.

some thoughts below the break!

i agree with harlan in picking b minor as the flagship key for this podcast; it's always struck me as a particularly black and morose key in colour, even if i don't have synesthesia myself. i think it's worth remarking that he chose b minor for both of the themes. it really makes me want to try and meld the song and the music box themes together (and makes me wonder if harlan already has that idea in the wings).

i find the structure of faroe's song to be especially compelling, the way that the first two iterations of the theme's second half meld together in the third and final iteration. it makes me really wonder about the narrative structure of malevolent—if we'll see john and arthur merge and hybridize in similar ways, perhaps...

i really have to commend harlan for communicating something so distinct about arthur's musical voice. these themes are very simple, very repetitive, and yet they carry within themselves this kind of understated melancholic beauty. i want to try my hand at doing a more elaborate and reharmonized arrangement of these, but it'll be difficult to do so without losing sight of the core of the piece, i think.

i also took some stylistic liberties with how i notated some of the expressive directions. i know you're not supposed to add periods to the end of everything, but it felt appropriate? it looks cool. maybe a bit edgy and pretentious, but who gives a shit.

Day 1:

Has a fight with Eddie the Maintenance Man and is nearly strangled to death.

Gets in a car crash. Sounded bad, but even the baby was fine, so…?

Gets stabbed in the abdomen and is in a coma for over a month

Day 2

Is running for his life within an hour of waking up from a coma. That can’t be good for you.

Smacks his head on a boathouse

Gets beaten by cops

Gets shot twice in the gut and once in the chest. Saved by ghost.

Day 3

Smacks head on dock.

Gets blood drawn by cultists. Probably no long term effects. hopefully.

Falls in an old elevator from an unspecified height. Uneven footsteps for some time afterward.

Larvae starts burrowing into arm, burns it out with a lighter

Big river monster draws a substantial amount of blood from abdomen with apparent anti-clotting abilities.

Extraplanar entity attempts to destroy soul. Don’t know if that left a mark.

Bites off the tip of his pinky

Day 4

Sandstorm removes skin from right(?) side of face and damages right(?) eye. Presumably damaged any other exposed skin.

Fights an electricity snake.

Blows up the boat the snake is in

Falls into a big nasty pit. Specifically mentions injuring his back and being unable to walk on his ankle

Falls over a smaller drop of some kind

Gets crushed under a rock- mentions leg and arm are injured

Resets dislocated shoulder with no medical training, being instructed by a being that can barely remember possessing a physical body.

Has fight with own hand. I think another attempt at strangulation

Starved and tortured in a prison in the world of a god of suffering and madness for 3 months

Then there’s just the unspecified leg injury that causes him to pass out. Wow he was really on a roll these past 2 days

Now it’s just the recent stuff. He says his leg just feels stiff now, and ponders over the drastic recovery 👀

Let’s see we’re 2.5 days of strenuous activity (+however long he was unconscious) without food. I suppose that is nothing outside his norm.

Those are most of the major injuries. In the intervening time, he engages in plenty of activities that would result in cuts and bruises. If you want to get real nuanced with your blorbo-crushing you can research the physical effects of chronic stress, coma without proper recovery, and of long-term starvation.

At this point I’m convinced that John is affording him boosted constitution.

Big chonky malevolent spoilers:

Sooo Arthur is getting more homicidal, and it has been days since he last ate, and he probably hasn’t eaten anything but human flesh for months. I’m… im a little concerned

What follows was intended to be a brief elaboration, but turned into a progressively more unhinged essay looking at a component of Arthur’s descent into madness. I’m not keeping this shit in my notes app, so if it survives, it will have to be here.

In the Sad Parent Poem -as I like to call it- Arthur tells his younger self that it wasn’t his fault. Growing up in that family structure, at least in my experience, you don’t see your parents as people like you. It’s like feeling weird when you see your teacher buying groceries. They are your world, and you are theirs, and that’s it. So for them to decide to dip- I can only imagine how a child would interpret that.

Maybe after investigation(by family or police) Arthur learned that this happened because his parents were Cultists. It was Their fault and not his. In the Sad Parent Poem, he also tells his younger self to “swallow all the hate.” I first interpreted that to mean ‘don’t blame your parents, the hate will only weigh you down.’ But now it seems like he stopped expressing his hatred, and swallowed it - pushed it down and let it fester for years. But a part of him always believed that it *was* his fault, and in reality the hatred was a way to distance himself from that feeling.

And then he (ostensibly) impregnated his wife and she died in child birth. But hey, at least your daughter survived to be all that’s left of her, to be your whole world, to prove that you are better than your parents… Whoops, you hyper focused on piano for a few minutes too long and now she’s dead and it is undeniably Your Fault.

I hc that it’s at this point he goes to the US to, ya know, Escape the Pain. After a few years, he lets himself get close to another person- his business partner, Peter “Parker” Yang🕷. Whoops you opened a book and now your bestie’s dead. Bonus points, you hid his body and then practically forgot about it due to Imminent Danger.

But hey, at least you have a voice in your head who you can’t possibly lo- Whoops he’s gone too. But hey, at least Cultist Bad. It’s Not Your Fault Because Cultist Bad. At least you have that. Oh wow eye bestie’s back! Something good actually happened to you. Maybe you can hold on to someone! This reminds you of that dead bestie… oh fuck you have a whole dead bestie that you haven’t even thought about. And then you became besties with his murderer. You didn’t even have the courtesy to mourn him. What the fuck is wrong with y- What’s that, Eye Bestie (murderer of Dead Bestie)? You say Cultist NOT Bad? You say ME bad for not helping?! I try to help, but yoU SAY CULTIST DEAD AND IS MY FAULT?!!? SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUTUPSHUTUP I HATE YOU …hence the negative reaction, probably

So we have learned that Arthur’s parents did the sewer slide. Both of them? In this universe? That sounds like cult shit to me. It would explain his abject hatred of “Cultists”.

@neutronbutt in episode 21, he finds miner’s clothes in the cabin and changed out of his old clothes. (He put on ‘as many layers as would fit’, so he probably looked like the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man) Even before that though, if anything remained of the suit, it was absolutely fucked. I took notes on a relisten, and it is remarkable that Arthur is still physically intact. If you want injuries to incorporate into fanfic, I got you

Do you ever think about how unsettling Arthur must look at this point? He’s this pale, emaciated, grimy(he splashed around in dirty bath water *once* in 5 months) guy in ill fitting clothes who looks like he took a spin in a rock tumbler. One of his hands looks diseased and the tip of the pinky is just blackened bone. Worst of all, there’s something wrong with his eyes but you can’t put your finger on what.

[MALEVOLENT 25 SPOILERS]

“WhAT The FUCk IS WRONG WITH YOU, ARTHUR?” I said those words aloud, and I have never meant them so earnestly😞😤 I get it, the absurd amount of trauma is finally catching up to him, but?? ‘You seem more sensitive than before, let me tear into you with the most vicious and personal insult I have thrown at you yet, which is saying something, directly after a deeply traumatizing event.’ APOLOGIZE RIGHT NOW ARTHUR. John honey he didn’t mean it, he doesn’t really think that 😭😭😭

And this is only going to get worse, unless Mr. Guthrie decides to take a U-turn on this character arc.
