This Memorial Day, we remember those who gave their lives for our country with Vincent Valdez’s “Excerpts For John” (2012). The series presents an unfolding sequence of a military funeral procession. Uniformed pallbearers carry a casket out of a cemetery and silently march their way through city streets and into an American barrio. The procession carries on until it reaches its final resting place: home. View the series in the upcoming exhibition “Home—So Different, So Appealing: Art from the Americas since 1957,” opening June 11. #MemorialDay #lacma #VincentValdez #pstlala #pstatlacma http://ift.tt/2rOysDB

June is the last month to see “Moholy-Nagy: Future Present,” as well as the complementary exhibition “Light Play: Experiments in Photography, 1970 to the Present.” On view Saturdays and Sundays only in LACMA’s Study Center for Photographs and Works on Paper, “Light Play” features still- and moving-image works by artists who have extended the parameters of photography—a medium defined as the recording of light. #lacma #FarrahKarapetian #photography http://ift.tt/2qNqR8I
Frans Snyders’s monumental paintings of larders and market scenes were originally displayed as pairs or groups of four. “Game Market” hung with a second painting of equal dimensions representing a fish market until both were sold to separate owners in 1987. This type of sculpture is called a haniwa, meaning “clay ring.” Haniwa were placed on top of tombs for the wealthy elite in Japan from 300 to 600 AD. There are many surviving examples of haniwa, but this horse is extraordinarily tall, at four feet. See it now in the Pavilion for Japanese art, level 4. #lacma http://ift.tt/2rFIQOK

Most fully developed in 18th-century Britain, the conversation piece was a specific type of group portrait that usually depicted a family involved in some everyday activity. Here, William Hamilton depicts Alexander Masterton and His Wife and Children. Which figure represents you on a #SundayFunday? We would be the snoozing dog. 🐶 💤 http://ift.tt/2sFCJch

@SoCalMuseums are about to have a very public summer fling, coming together on Thursday, June 29 for the 2nd annual #LAInstaFling! Each of the 21 participating museums—covering art, cultural heritage, natural history, and science—will post on its own Instagram account about another institution, sharing what makes its subject a must-see destination for visitors, both digitally and IRL. Follow along as we post about all things related to @sbmuseart! #MuseumInstaSwap http://ift.tt/2siuPa2
Welcome to the @SoCalMuseums #InstaFling! All throughout the day we’re sharing photos from our visit to @sbmuseart. Our first stop was the Summer Art Camp. 🎨 ☀️ Each week of the camp focuses on a different art technique – from painting to ceramics – and a fun theme. We got to see works inspired by Pop Art, from Campbell’s soup cans to cartoon dots. The next art camp theme is “About Face: Portraits in Art.“ #LAInstaFling #summer #MuseumInstaSwap #museums http://ift.tt/2sVj8ox
In Celebration of @sbmuseart’s 75th anniversary in 2016, the museum is displaying some gorgeous highlights of the museum’s permanent collection. You can see works by Richard Diebenkorn, Claude Monet, Michael Light and Marc Chagall (get excited for LACMA’s exhibition exploring Chagall’s creations for the stage, coming this summer!) We loved walking through the galleries to take in works from modern art, photography, arts of Asia and more. #LAInstaFling #SoCalMuseums #museums #lacma #MuseumInstaSwap http://ift.tt/2t5TEmP
How does art help us virtually travel to other places and worlds? That’s a question we pondered as we walked through “You Are Going on a Trip: Modern and Contemporary Prints from the Permanent Collection,” on view until August 20. If you’re looking for inspiration for a summer getaway, this is a great place to start! #LAInstaFling #SoCalMuseums #museums #MuseumInstaSwap http://ift.tt/2tuKseJ

It’s the final week of “The Inner Eye: Vision and Transcendence in African Arts.” Iconic figures, masks, initiation objects, and reliquary guardians guide people to spirit realms, to the highest levels of esoteric wisdom, and to the afterlife. Many works possess downcast eyes of contemplation and spiritual reverence, while others depict piercing projections of power and protection, or a multiplicity of eyes for heightened vigilance and awareness. The exhibition addresses various ways of seeing and encourages viewers to notice how works were made to look upon, gaze within, and see beyond ordinary limitations. On view until July 9 at the Resnick Pavilion. #lacma #InnerEye http://ift.tt/2tak1tr
As a guest in 1871 of the official government survey team led by Ferdinand Hayden, Moran explored the headwaters of the Yellowstone River and became the first professional artist to paint the area. While he was out in the field, Moran worked in pencil and watercolor. These watercolor field sketches were used to influence Congress in its decision to declare the Yellowstone area America’s first national park.⠀ ⠀ See the work in person in the Art of the Americas building, level 3. #lacma #painting #fourthofjuly http://ift.tt/2umgeru
This is Guadalupe Rosales (founder of @veteranas_and_rucas and @map_pointz) and will be running LACMA’s Instagram feed for the next 6 weeks. I am starting off with one of my favorite works in the exhibition, “Home- So Different, So Appealing”, Badge of Honor by Pepon Osorio. Pepon Osorio’s work has taught me to value everything I have experienced (every memory and every place I have been in) and to reflect on those experiences because that is what has built the person I am today, something I come to terms with every day.
Osorio wants people to think about who we are in relationship to what we have just seen (when looking at his work), and start a negotiation not only with the artwork but with the public at large, who we are and where do we stand… “As you stand and you’re not allowed to come in, then you need to reflect and you need to confront yourself almost as if I placed giant mirror right in front of you.”-Pepon Osorio

The Estrada Courts in Boyle Heights are one of many housing projects decorated with murals painted by L.A. artists like Charles “Cat” Felix’s, Judithe Hernández and David Botello. These murals are nostalgic to me because even though i never lived in the projects, my mother and I spent a lot of time here visiting friends, relatives and playing in the playground. I considered it my second home. I didn’t understand the murals as art at the time, but I still enjoyed looking at them and small details of the paintings have stuck with me. I took this photo of them a few years ago on a cloudy Monday morning with my Yashica point and shoot. —Guadalupe Rosales (of @veteranas_and_rucas And @map_pointz) #LACMAInstaResidency http://ift.tt/2uSuS9q
