Following Up On This Morning’s Post About Housing Projects I Am Familiar With Here In Los Angeles-

Following up on this morning’s post about housing projects I am familiar with here in Los Angeles- When looking at these photographs by artist Livia Corona Benjamin, at first it looks like grids or a pixelated image but as you get closer or spend more time looking at the photograph you’ll realize these are homes- low income homes. More than two million homes were built during Vicente Fox’s presidency. They were built to provide living space for former agricultural workers forced to take low-wage jobs in urban centers. “These are not the neighborhoods of a ‘Home Sweet Home’ dream fulfilled, the artist says, but are ubiquitous grids of ecological and social intervention on a scale and of consequences that are difficult to grasp.” On view now as part of “Home- So Different, So Appealing”

Happy Saturday Everyone! I Am Posting This Photo To Honor Southern California'a Youth Culture. Back In

Happy Saturday everyone! I am posting this photo to honor Southern California'a youth culture. Back in the 90s, weekends were about hanging out with friends, going cruising on the boulevard and going to raves and house parties. Here is a photo of ‘The Girls’ party crew at Johnny Rockets on Melrose, 1992 by Los Angeles based photographer, Eddie Ruvalcaba (photographer for Homeboy Industries and former photographer for Street Beat Magazine) “The Girls party were primarily based out of Boyle Heights, Roosevelt High School which is where I went as well. We decided to go to Melrose Ave because it was the place to shop for the best style of clothing. (Dr Martens, Dickies pants and Bomber Jackets)” —Eddie Ruvalcaba To learn more about the rave and party crew subculture in SoCal please check out my page @map_pointz— Guadalupe Rosales (of @veteranas_and_rucas And @map_pointz) #LACMAInstaResidency http://ift.tt/2sBhx4S

In Dedication To The Rave And Party Crew Subculture, I Am Sharing This Photo Of A Backyard Party Organized

In dedication to the rave and party crew subculture, I am sharing this photo of a backyard party organized by party crew, East LA Madness in East Los Angeles CA.

As teenagers we had to be creative to organize and throw parties with limited recourses before cellphones and the Internet were widely accessible. The parties also provided material for teenagers interested in photography and developing their skills as artists, unknowingly capturing an historic moment. The same was true with the Dj’s and everyone else who contributed to the events. These parties took place in warehouses and backyards throughout southern California.

Who remembers the party lines and party flyers?

If you went to any of these parties and raves, please comment below with your stories. To learn more about the rave and party crew subculture in SoCal please check out my page @map_pointz— Guadalupe Rosales (of @veteranas_and_rucas And @map_pointz) #LACMAInstaResidency Photo courtesy of my sister Maria http://ift.tt/2uDReMQ

Lowriders Have Always Been An Art Form For Chicanos, A Part Of Our Culture That Was Only Seen Out On

Lowriders have always been an art form for Chicanos, a part of our culture that was only seen out on the streets. Karina (on the left) and her friend pose for a photo at a Lowrider car show in Santa Ana CA in 1995. This photo is a perfect example of what a typical Lowrider car show looks like. A Few Months Ago I Drove Around The Neighbor And Passed By The House I Grew Up In, Something I Hadn’t

A few months ago I drove around the neighbor and passed by the house I grew up in, something I hadn’t done in decades. I became really curious and wondered what it would be like to be inside that house again, a house I haven’t been in since I was 8 years old. I vividly remember the layout of the house and what it felt like in every room. I also remember sunlight coming in through the windows specially in the summer. A carpet from Carmen Argote’s childhood home —titled “720 Sq. Ft. Household Mutations - Part B” is about that to me. Objects/material as time capsules and artifacts that hold so much history. A carpet that has so many stories embedded in it. Removed from its original context, viewers are encouraged to rethink the carpet as a map, elevating it to a sculpture of historical personal narrative.

I Drove Around The East Side Today- Passed By The Estrada Courts, Whittier Blvd, Took A Break At El Pino

I drove around the East Side today- passed by the Estrada Courts, Whittier Blvd, took a break at El Pino ( a natural landmark that sits on the border of East LA and Boyle Heights) and ended my day looking at the murals in Ramona Gardens. This mural, Virgin de Guadalupe was painted by artist, Armando Cabrera in 1974. People in the neighborhood have created an altar in front of the mural and leave offerings. Virgen de Guadalupe is one of 30 murals on the walls of Ramona Gardens apartment buildings painted by major Chicano artists like Magú, Carlos Almaraz and Judith Hernández. The first mural in Ramona Gardens was painted in 1971.—Guadalupe Rosales (of @veteranas_and_rucas And @map_pointz) #LACMAInstaResidency http://ift.tt/2uTtc0j

It’s Flashback Friday! Here Is A Photo From My Physical Archival Project- Party Crew, Together We Stand

It’s Flashback Friday! Here is a photo from my physical archival project- Party crew, Together We Stand at a house party somewhere in San Gabriel Valley in 1993. I am extremely grateful to be in a position where people can trust me with their material and stories. This photo along with a thick photo album and other artifacts was donated by my friend Eileen Torres. Eileen was from a party crew called ‘Just Us Girls’ and 'Together We Stand’, two very empowering party crew names. The party scene and backyard gatherings have existed for over decades, and the youth has always found ways to create unique spaces for various reasons- whether it is a survival mechanism, a break from the norm or way of expression, it’s very important to honor that history. Shoutout goes out to the originators of the party scene and everyone who has paved the way for the new/next generation.—Guadalupe Rosales (of @veteranas_and_rucas And @map_pointz) #LACMAInstaResidency http://ift.tt/2vl3IIA

Who Gets To Dictate What Kind Of Art Belongs In A Museum? When The Sculpture, ‘Back Seat Dodge '38’

Who gets to dictate what kind of art belongs in a museum? When the sculpture, ‘Back Seat Dodge '38’ by artist Edward Kienholz was exhibited in 1966 at LACMA, The County Board of Supervisors tried to ban the sculpture which portrays a couple engaged in sexual activity in the back seat of the automobile. They threatened to shut down the exhibition but the museum reached a compromise- the sculpture’s car door would remain closed and guarded. The door would only be opened to visitors over 18 years old. The attention the sculpture received had hundreds of people lined up to see it person. Anyhow, Back Seat Dodge '38 is on display at LACMA. Make sure to check out when you come visit.—Guadalupe Rosales (of @veteranas_and_rucas And @map_pointz) #LACMAInstaResidency © Kienholz http://ift.tt/2tV1vUU

Kind of Blue, 2017
Airbrush, Flashe, on Canvas 64” x 48” Courtesy of the artist @lostbros I hung out with LA based artist, Mario Ayala this past weekend. We talked about art, music, lowriders, LA/family traditions and more. Mario’s work is heavily influenced by a wide range of specific historical references and cultural expressions. He uses traditional techniques such as airbrushing and melds personal sentiment with shared cultural memories. For example this piece, ‘Kind of Blue’ (2017) depicts the demolition of the 6th street bridge which connected Boyle Heights to Downtown Los Angeles. You also see a jazz musician and a gold cage. After looking and talking about his work, I found myself reflecting on my own identity as an artist. What artwork have you felt most connected with? This is a photo of 4 women from the party crew, ‘Together We Stand’ (TWS) on the ‪6th‬ ‪street‬ bridge in 1993. The bridge was demolished on Feb 5th, 2016. The city of Los Angeles faces the erasure of its rich histories. Part of my motivation in creating the @veteranas_and_rucas and Map_Pointz digital archives was seeing the way my neighborhood was changing.  These projects are about preserving a history. Mario Ayala’s paintings (as seen in the previous post) discuss and preserve this same history in another form. I also want to encourage today’s youth to document (in writing, photography etc.) and pay close attention to what they experience in their daily lives. —Guadalupe Rosales (of @veteranas_and_rucas And @map_pointz) #LACMAInstaResidency http://ift.tt/2vce3r2

Before emojis there were… NETSUKE 😡 A netsuke is a small sculptural object which has developed in Japan over a period of more than three hundred years. Netsuke initially served both functional and aesthetic purposes. The traditional form of Japanese dress, the kimono, had no pockets. Women would tuck small personal items into their sleeves, but men suspended their tobacco pouches, pipes, purses, writing implements, and other items of daily use on a silk cord passed behind their obi (sash). These hanging objects are called sagemono. The netsuke was attached to the other end of the cord preventing the cord from slipping through the obi. This little guy shown in the photo is titled Raconteur (Alternate Title: Rakugoka)

If The Hope Of Giving Is To Love The Living, The Giver Risks Madness In The Act Of Giving.

If the hope of giving is to love the living, the giver risks madness in the act of giving.

Some such lesson I seemed to see in the faces that surrounded me.

Needy and blind, unhopeful, unlifted, what gift would give them the gift to be gifted? The giver is no less adrift than those who are clamouring for the gift.— from The Giver by James Baldwin Happy Birthday to James Baldwin ! Photo: 1/30/1963, New York, NY.
