The mission had gone to shit. Everyone should have died. But that’s why they were sent in, because they were untouchable. Blessed by the gods with blood of ichor, fueled by nectar and ambrosia, framed like Hercules in the constellations. 

They hauled ass to humvees, scattered like shards of glass and only focusing on getting to the rally point and not getting blown to smithereens. 

Ghost is driving. Soap takes the seat behind him while the others cram in. There is heaving breath, cussing and the rapid click of refilling cartridges. The smell of gunsmoke and tangy iron blood permeates the air. 

The air is tense. Tires squeal. Rubber burns. They’re peeling out of there. Somewhere in the scramble, someone bumps the radio on the dash and it starts blasting an old tune. One that has Soap absolutely elated even on the brink of death. He can barely hear over the sound of the grenade that detonated to their left, but he has the nerve to laugh. 

He waits for the ceasefire before grabbing the luggage rack on the top of the car and hauling himself half out the window. He swings his gun around and looks through the scope as he begins the return fire on the enemy. He’s screaming to the wind. 

Gimme, gimme, gimme a man after midnight. Won't somebody help me chase the shadows away? Gimme, gimme, gimme a man after midnight. Take me through the darkness to the break of the day

It clogs the radio frequency they’re supposed to be communicating through. Price wonders what the god-awful screeching is about, wondering if one of his best just got eviscerated. 

“No.” Ghost confirms through the comms. “Just Soap.” 

With as many men as he’s taking down, no one has the guts to tell him to stop.
