So I’ve Gotten Really Into Persona 5 Lately And Decided A While Ago To Try To Concept My Own Phantom

So I’ve gotten really into Persona 5 lately and decided a while ago to try to concept my own phantom thieves ish group. These guys are the ones I have done so far, but I do want to add more people to this group! I have only written the summoning speeches for one of these guys, so I’ll put the symbolism behind certain design aspects of the personas and the speech for the one I have it for since he doesn’t have any symbolism in his design. And then I’ll explain their user’s stories!

Annabelle (”Blunderbuss”): The leader of the group and the first to summon her persona. She is the child of an assumed “criminal”, who died in a shoot out with police. She is looked upon with caution and contempt, assumed to be destined to become a criminal like her father. She knows her father is innocent and is just trying to keep her head down when she discovers the metaverse.

Rook: On a pirate flag; the color red symbolizes no mercy, an hourglass symbol symbolizes “time is running out”, and weapons symbolize an impending fight.

Rowan (”Spark”): The second to summon their persona. Rowan used to be a goody-two-shoes, an honor student, and a perfectionist. This was all due to expectations placed upon them to succeed and was fine. They suppose. But an incident left them without their right eye. Suddenly, they were treated as other and everything they were was ignored. Well, they were going to be treated as a good for nothing? They’d act like a good for nothing. They feel more ready to discover who they truly are after summoning their persona.

Antagonist: "So! You've finally decided to stop the show! You've kept it up so long, I was beginning to think you'd never find your real self. Now tell me, will you return to the role society cast you as? Or will you come onto the stage, and wow the audience with whom you truly are?! I am thou, thou art I- Thou hast been subservient for too long! The you your heart projects hath been locked away much like a princess in a castle! It's time we forge a contract, and let the world watch the true you in awe!"

Atlas (Masquerade”): The third to summon their persona. Atlas is close to an abusive, manipulative man whom he keeps a secret for, unaware he’s being used. I’m not quite sure what the secret is currently. However, he finds himself accidentally pulled into the palace of his “friend” and finds out he’s being used and manipulated. And suddenly he’s ready to let the caged bird sing.

Zephyranthes:  The Zephyranthes, or the rain flower, means "I will never forget you", black nightingales represent secrets, and the number 5 in numerology is connected to life changes. Also, the white rose in Atlas’s hair for his palace outfit symbolizes secrets.

Antagonist Idea;

A being with the power to determine the worth of anny item hoards items of incredible value; souls, for instance. He'll gladly give you any item, if you're willing to give him an item of greater value.

Hero: Wait, don't you mean equal value?

The Dude: No, I said greater. What would be the point in giving them away if I wasn't making a profit?

Whumpee held captive in a cell and unconscious from the infected wound on their side. Whumper coming in and apathetically pouring alcohol/antiseptic on it. Whumpee screaming themselves awake, their body writhing from the agonizing pain.

OR

Whumpee slouched against a wall with a hand pressed to their wound, blood seeping through their fingers. Caretaker coming over with a rag, a bottle of antiseptic, and gauze. Apologizing to Whumpee but that it needs to be done. As the wound is disinfected, Whumpee throws their head back against the wall with a hoarse shout, losing consciousness as a single tear falls from beneath their lashes.

How can I write a villainous character and convey that they do truly horrible things, without worrying about triggering my readers?

I might not be the most popular person with this answer, but here we go.

Hannibal Lecter gives no fucks.

While I don’t know of any author who purposefully sets out to trigger a reader, you cannot worry about triggers when you’re writing a villain. You just can’t. Otherwise, you end up with a straw man for a villain and your story goes to hell. Seriously, do you think Hannibal Lecter worried about triggering people? How shitty would Silence of the Lambs have been if he did?

Instead of triggers, you need to focus on that character’s motivations. What is driving him or her? Why are they doing what they do? Rarely do people kill/torture/rape for the lulz- and if they do, there’s probably pathological issues at work. Above all else, that character’s motivations need to be crystal clear to you.

Many people starting out don’t develop their villains because they don’t want to think about those motivations. It’s uncomfortable at best, agonizing at worst, and your mind goes to some very dark places. In a way, they become more terrifying the more relatable you make them. I know because one of my villains is a pedophile/serial killer*. I wince when I write that he likes orange marmalade and Earl Grey tea, or that he insists on punctuality.

Now, if you’re looking for an author who develops phenomenal villains, I think Thomas Harris is right up there. He’s the mind behind Hannibal Lecter, “Buffalo Bill”, and “The Tooth Fairy”. It’s safe to say he has penned some of the terrifying and vicious characters in fiction in the past 30 years. His villains have quirks, charisma, and can make you laugh or even experience a fleeting moment of sympathy. They have tremendous depth and are a joy to read. Find an author that can make you hate to love a villain and aspire to that.

Coming back to trigger warnings. Please do not misunderstand me. I’m not saying don’t have them. They are an invaluable heads up to your readers that there’s graphic/intense content ahead, but they do have their limits. One simple reason is anything can be a trigger. I knew people who’s triggers include the sound of a telephone ringing, the smell of coffee, and lawnmowers. You simply can’t tag everything that might set someone off, and I’m saying this as someone with triggers of her own. What I find helpful in addition to a warning, is a rating and summary. I include the rating because what causes a trigger warning in a YA novel has a different threshold for something that is geared towards Mature audiences. That way, readers have context and can make an informed decision.

In case you haven’t noticed, I really like talking about villains. In fact, my MC’s are all villains in their own right. My challenge was to dream up villains so bad, they’d make the MC’s look like heroes. And you know what? I loved every, freakin’ second of it.

-Graphei

*yes I said villains (plural- i made more than one) and if you think there isn’t a Rogue in Batman who fits that description, you haven’t done your homework.

What is this? Why do I feel exactly like this person, holy shit, anyways PICKLE RICK!

What I've discovered about myself is that I'm attracted to particularly cruel and feral antagonists because wouldn't it be just lovely to be chosen by someone so powerful? To be caressed by someone as close to a god as it gets, since I'm an atheist who feels so forsaken by a higher being that I hunger for someone as cruel as I imagine God - and all the variations of them - to be, to love me. To show me that yes, though they can crumble the very foundations of what is morally sound beneath their finger tips they can also see the glimmer of something special in a little brunette man with so many dreams and too much anxiety. Is that what religion speaks of? Of feeling loved by someone so much more powerful than you, that being nothing but a speck of dust in their never ending gaze would be enough?

Y/N

This girl at the school I go to is a y/n protagonist with blond hair, blue eyes, 4 ft.11, blinding optimism, a boyfriend, and top of our class. Currently, I am filling the antagonist/frenemy because when I ask her a question about something she can blow up at me for no reason. For example, I heard a rumor from my friend that she kissed her boyfriend finally. So I asked her if it was true she told the office and broke up with her boyfriend because "Us doing something like that is disgusting." then blamed me for breaking his heart and starting a rumor that they kissed. I offered to hug it out like a kid's movie and even though I did not start the rumor I apologized to her and her boyfriend. but she still keeps coming to me "Somebody asked if I kissed my boyfriend I can't bleve you have ruined my life you must be jealous of me. I could get expelled about this!" like girl, some upperclassmen were found making out campus and got away with a small PDA lecture your fine. but y/n is going to have my grades go down if she keeps trying to be the victim of nothing.
