summary: In an AU where Cedric survives the Triwizard tournament, but has trauma from it, y/n has to help him through a panic attack caused by his claustrophobia.
a/n: mentions what happened to Cedric in the maze in detail, mentions claustrophobia, and implied panic attack
Cedric would never be the same after the Triwizard Tournament.
Not everything had changed. He was still the same loyal and compassionate boy youâd always loved, but he would never be as carefree as he once was. Slowly, his hair had been growing out; nothing major, but just enough to cover his eyes. His sleep pattern was in a downward spiral too. Almost every night, he had grim nightmares about what happened during the tournament, and it caused him to fall asleep in his classes often. He confessed to you the terrifying memories he had from the maze. You could remember in great detail when he told you about the suffocating tunnels of ivy that surrounded him as he tried to move through the maze, making it almost impossible to breathe. The experience was suffocating. He was even more scared by the overgrown roots that wrapped around him and attempted to carry him away from the cup. He clawed at them, screaming in terror for help, but nothing he could do on his own would fight them off. Now, if he got his shoe caught on something as simple as his shoelace, it would make him turn ghostly pale, getting flashbacks to the moment he couldâve lost his life.
Despite what he went through, he kept exceptional grades and still had his friends. For him, maintaining his grades wasnât a surprise. Not only were his professors very understanding, but studying was one of the few things he could do without ever having to think about what happened that day. He was much more surprised to discover that his friends still loved him, and that he was still as popular as always. He thought his friends would be disappointed in him, but like the incredible friends they were, they adored him just as much, and respected him for the hardship he went through. More than anything, he was glad you still loved him, even if he would never be exactly the same.
However, attention and popularity were no longer what made him feel whole. When people circled him to talk to him, it often scared him. After what happened in the maze, Cedric had intense claustrophobia, and even standing in a crowded room could set him off.
After every dark thing that happened, the only real thing he could find solace in was you, his beloved support system. You knew this, and made it a point to check on him daily, especially if he didnât talk to you for a day. Thatâs how you knew when it was a dreadful day for him.
Today was different. Classes were over for the day, and you hadnât seen him once. You thought maybe it was just a coincidence you didnât see him in the halls, but when he didnât show up to your shared History of Magic class, you grew worried. Youâd asked around about him for what felt like hours, and eventually one of his friends told you theyâd seen Cedric go to his dormitory.
You contemplated what couldâve happened as you entered the Hufflepuff common room. The smell of sweets wafted through the air, and the syrupy scent filled your nose. Usually, you loved to admire the soft yellow furniture and warm lighting, but today you went straight for the boys' dorm. You pushed open the ancient creaky oak door to Cedricâs dorm, and the scene felt all too familiar to you. Before the tournament, Cedric often invited you over, but that was becoming rare as time went on. You knew he still loved you, but it was becoming increasingly difficult for him to reach out to anyone, even just to chat.
You opened the door to find Cedric on the wood floor, sitting next to his bed, with his knees to his chest. You rushed over, quickly closed the door behind you, and sat with him.
For a while, he didnât say anything, he just softly cried. His cheeks were red, and his breathing was shallow. His favorite gold Hufflepuff sweater had droplets of water across the front from his salty tears. You wanted to engulf him in your arms, but you knew he needed his space.
âI canât believe what I did,â he finally said, breaking the silence. The tears in his throat were audible and heartbreaking. âA group of people tried talking to me, and I just snapped,â heâs barely able to choke out the words as he begins to sob into your shoulder.
âI know Ced, itâs okay,â you say as you brush your fingers through his soft overgrown honey hair.
âI just snapped,â he says between sobs. âThey were all standing so close, and I couldnât breathe, and all I could think about was that stupid maze.â The words leave his mouth in a quick spiral, and once theyâre out he grabs you like if he doesnât, youâll vanish. âI shouted at them,â he says, sounding dejected. Even if those students never remembered it, he was too sweet not to blame himself.
âCedric Diggory,â you say in a strong, but concerned tone, âno one is mad at you. The people here are considerate enough to understand what you went through, and if they canât understand it, then maybe they deserve to be yelled at.â He doesnât respond to you, but he holds on to you a little tighter, and presses his face into your neck. His warm, soft lips meet your skin and plant a small kiss on you, and you can feel his wet, tear-stained cheeks brush against you. âWhy donât we get you some food? Youâll feel much better,â you earnestly suggest. He moves away from your neck, keeping a firm grip on your body. Despite his disheveled appearance, he sends you a grin that makes you feel like the sun has just come out after a long winter. He nods his head in agreement and stands up with you. You watch as he fixes his hair, and changes his clothes to go down to the great hall with you. When his shirt is off, you see his sculpted, toned body, and you canât help but giggle. He blushes, and a soft shade of pink takes over his face. He sends you a wink and quickly puts on another shirt. It seemed like Hufflepuffâs golden boy was making a return.
Once youâre out of the Hufflepuff common room he takes you by the hand and twirls you around, pulling you into him with a soft smile. Your hands connect, as if they were made to hold each other, and he traces his thumb in circles on your hand.
âYou are the light of my life,â he whispers into your ear, and itâs like you can hear the smile in his voice.
Pairing: Cedric the Sorcerer X Wormwood! Reader
Word Count: Roughly 1,516 words
Warnings: None; just yearning and fluff
Notes: Gif, photo, poem, and characters are not mine; only the story is mine! The poem is âIf only She Knewâ by Kiara Wilson and, honestly, I think it fit pretty well for the story :) The idea was one I found on @merlins-mushroomsâ blog that focused on the reader being Cedricâs familiar instead of Wormwood and them being able to switch between their animal and human form. I had a little bit of time and wanted to write, so I decided why not? It seems more like headcanons than a story but what can you do lmao. Hope you guys enjoy, feedback is always appreciated!
Growing up as an animal-based shape shifter, life had been both difficult and easy going for you. The magical gift you had to change into any animal at will provided you with opportunities and freedom not many people ever got to possess. Especially when it came to sneaking around and getting away with things
What made it difficult though, is that you had immense difficulty finding a job that suited you. Although you had attended Hexley Hall to learn to control and gain your magical abilities, it ended up being something you just didn't want the responsibility of doing. Â
Something that you did like about attending there though, was someone who had grown to be quite dear to you over the years: Cedric.
Cedric and you had started off pretty rocky, given you different backgrounds and his stifling parents, but you eventually learned to create a happy medium. After the whole fiasco with his older sister and his falling out with Roland, Cedric ended up not having many people to fully rely on. In fact, he had no one to rely on. That is, until he met you.
You two would work on spells together, duel against each other, rant about your problems to one another, and even began providing physical affection to each other. One form of which, was when you would shift into a stark black cat and curl up in his arms underneath you guysâ favorite tree outside the school grounds.
For Cedric though, his favorite form for you was the raven you would transform into when wanting some alone time or freedom. After all, one of the few things that you adored above all things was your independence. He thought you looked adorable and, after an embarrassing incident that you have sworn him into secrecy about, he dubbed your new nickname âWormwood.â
When you both began to creep closer to your graduation date though, your time together became thinner and more tense. When your studies started to wrap up, it became clear that you both had to pick your career soon. To Cedric, that choice was easy. His father had been Roland Iâs Royal Sorcerer, and it was only natural that he took his place when the king retired. For you though, choosing a career that would define the rest if your life caused you so much stress that even Greylock had noticed. Which said a lot lmao But, like always, Cedric was there to ease your troubles. Since you both wanted to stay together, but there was no need for a second royal sorcerer, Cedric offered the idea that you become his familiar.Â
WhichâŚ..wasn't actually a bad idea. In fact, it offered every bit of freedom, fun, and intellectual interest that you had desired in a would-be dream job.Â
After crushing Cedric in a bone shattering hug, you quickly made your way to the schoolâs office and began the preparation of registering as a familiar. lmao, weâre just gonna act like it works that way cause I have no idea what else to do
--------------------------------------------
Moving to the castle had been an easier transition than you had anticipated, but you assumed that was more your doing than Cedricâs given the fact that people seemed to greet him with more suspicion than warmth.Â
An unexpected advancement though, was when you were told that you both had to share sleeping quarters. Not that it really mattered that much; you and Cedric had slept near each other before when bunking and traveling at Hexley Hall, and this time would be no different.Â
At least....to you it would. The fact that you had grown up to be rather beautiful made you sleeping in the same quarters rather awkward for Cedric. And though he could hide his affection relatively well, he still slipped up here and there and was caught throwing you yearning glances throughout the day.Â
(Cedric was just glad that you had separate beds, cause he knew he wouldnât be able to handle it if you slept less than ten feet away from him.)
Dynamic wise, you both worked together with so much ease it seemed as though you shared a collective mind. Which, in a way, you did. The only downside to knowing each other so well though, was the fact that you were adopting one anotherâs personality traits. Cedric, of course, had little downsides, but you were finding yourself becoming a tad more awkward then you remember originally being. But that just made you even more cuter in Cedricâs eyes. Which didnât help his repressed love for you that he had harbored for the last fifteenish years he had known you.
--------------------------------------------
It wasn't until Sofia joined the castle and started to warm up to Cedric that he let it slip that he had the most embarrassing crush on you though. Sofia, of course, thought that this was the most adorable thing in the whole world and made it her lifeâs mission to help you both get together before it was too late.Â
--------------------------------------------
After sending you away on âwork-relatedâ jobs, Cedric and Sofia began to brainstorm the best possible ways to reveal his feelings and have them reciprocated. This ended with Cedric bringing up the idea of doing it through one of your more favorable interests: Poetry.
When you guys were still young and spent most of your time underneath the great Elm tree at Hexley Hall, you two had jokingly picked up the hobby of writing mushy and cringe inducing poetry. Which meant that his admission of feelings would be even more meaningful and heartfelt. That would definitely aid him in his and Sofiaâs plans.
--------------------------------------------
While he began writing his love poem to you, Sofia began to set up the location in which he would proclaim his love. With the help of a few animal companions, Sofia had successfully set up a romantic setting in a secluded area of the palace gardens when she saw Cedric leading you down the pathway towards a singular bench.
You were wearing a deep purple pantsuit and, for a minute, Sofia realized that you complemented eachother surprisingly well.
After quickly hiding behind a bush, she got as close as she could without being found.
Grasping both of your hands in his as he stood in front of your seated form, Cedric began the start of confession speech.
â(y/n), to say that youâve had a tremendous impact on my life would be a tragically large misconception. Unlike everyone else in my life, you have stuck in my corner through thick and thin and have remained, through it all, my closest companion and friend.â
At this point, he began to nervously shift around and cast his eyes down to his polished black shoes.Â
âThe thing is though, that my feelings as of late have changed. And, to help convey themâŚ.I sort ofâŚ.w-wrote you a poem.â
You let out a snort to this, but looked at him tenderly as if to say âcontinue.â
Coughing into his fist, Cedric pointed his chin upwards as he sat to face you and started to recite his hastily written poem.
âShe has her own special way
Of turning around my terrible day.
She makes all the bad things go away
The second that she says hey.
And when I look into her eyes,
I see pure beauty with no disguise.
Just a glance at her makes my heartbeat rise.
I know for a fact that these feelings aren't lies.
If only she knew
How much my love for her grew,
Maybe, just maybe, we could start something new,
And then I'd never feel blue.
And if beauty were inches, she'd go on for miles.
I'd better catch her before I go out of style.
I'm going to let my heart be my dial
So I can tell her what I've been feeling for a while.â
After finishing, Cedric nervously looked up at you to see what reaction you would show to what he had just revealed. Gazing at your eyes, he finally noticed the rim of tears that surrounded the lower part of your eyes and began to panic.
âOh no, was that too much? Did...did I just ruin everything? Merlinâs Mushrooms! This always happens,â his tender look deflated into one of distress as he put his head in his hands and quickly turned away from you. It wasnât until he heard what, at first, sounded like crying that he hesitantly gazed up at you. Analyzing your facial features, he noticed that your face was not scrunched up in disgust, but rather into one of joy and laughter. You let out an airy giggle and reached to cradle his cheeks in your palms.Â
âOh Ceddy, that was the mushiest and most cringe inducing poem youâve written yet,â you said with a smile.
âIâm just glad that this one is about me.â
âDoes that mea-âÂ
It was at that point that you connected both of your lips and started to slowly initiate a deep and affectionate kiss. Sofia could be heard squealing behind one of the bushes across from you guysâ bench and that only made you giggle softly against Cedricâs slightly chapped lips. Which made the bumbling sorcerer swoon and lightly bring you into a hug,
Needless to say, that situation led to you both getting real familiar with each other. Only, this time, it lead to one of the most fulfilling chapters of both of your lives.
Basically sums up the romantic aspect of your relationship đ

dear cedric,
i hope your travels back to highgarden have been well. you departure was so sudden i was not able to find you before you left. i'm sure it is important business why you are away and not because you grew bored of all of us at the vale.Â
i'm unsure if you knew when you'll be traveling back to the vale with all the talks of battles and fighting going on. (are you fighting? you know you all don't have to fight but you are so very similar to my brother. iâd be very happy for some company back in the eyrie.)
smudge might be the only one relived with your departure since that means kit is not lurking around every corner to make a new snack out of him.
i do have some news my friend....it seems like my wedding is going to be sooner than expected. the fighting ahead has moved everything along. and i know it is probably going to be a stretch and iâm sure you have other important thing to do.... but i would really love for you to be there. you've been a dear friend and i want you there for the day. it would mean a lot to me.
of course i understand if you have other obligations and cannot make it.
i hope you are well
your friend,

@rosaaarynâ
he saw the figure of rosa arryn, sat upon a bench beneath one of the cloisters of dragonstone as the rain fell outside, talking to ⌠a basket? cedric almost narrowed his eyes in momentary confusion before clearing his facial expression as the woman noticed him; he had heard much of rosa arrynâs emotionally fragile nature, and seen a fair amount of it in the few moments rowan had allowed his little sister to stay with the bunch of older boys. offering her a nod of acknowledgement, he did not intend on stopping but continuing on his journey -  it was then he saw the floppy ears of a rabbit peep from the basket. ah, cedric thought. not mad. almost simultaneously, his four legged fox of a shadow had chosen to sneak from the shade of the foliage; vivid orange tail upright as his amber eyes fixed on the rabbit now being cradled in the womanâs arms.
âkit, no.â cedric hissed under his breath, moving to step before the creature in an attempt to stop the arryn woman from seeing the creature that wanted to feast upon her precious bunny for a spot of lunch. âgo on, bugger off. weâll get you lunch somewhere else.â
.
there was a cool breeze move past from the soft rain that fell outside. she had forgotten long ago what the rain sounded like falling on stone but she knew it was a peaceful noise. if she closed her eyes and concentrated hard enough then maybe she could conjure up the sound or imagine what it could be. the arryn was happy enough to sit on the bench and enjoy the view at least. for a moment she might even look as if she belonged in that spot, like a statue caught in time. Â
her gaze was mostly fixated on the book she had brought along with her, along with her small companion who was enjoying the protection of the basket he was tucked into. the breeze moved around them carrying hints of sweet rainwater that hung in the air with each rustle of the wind. lost in the paged of her book she missed cedric walking by her, only looking up to lean over to share a small piece of fruit with smudge she smiled. âthere you go.â she told the tiny bunny.
up ahead of her she did not hear the agitated words of the tyrell as he commanded his own small companion to keep walking. rosa could only see the red flash of a fox trotting over towards her. and more likely over towards smudge. quickly she scooped up the small bunny in her arms, standing up to keep out of sight of the fox who now stood at her feet. âno, you are getting no meal here. find somewhere else to go little fox. shooâŚshoo please.â her eyes searched up towards someone walking up âhe cannot have smudge. is heâŚferal?â she said holding the bunny closer, only noticing them who it was. âoh, cedric. hello.â
