I’m gonna do the best can with what i’ve got since i’m only 3 maybe 4-5 hours from the coast. Wish me luck guys

If you need to evacuate hurricane Florence or you are staying put

Pick a town now and let hotels know you are evacuating from Florence. This works for every problematic hurricane. It usually doesn’t matter how many indoor pets you have, it just depends on the hotel. Most hotel brands will accept more than 2 dogs and cats for hurricane evacuees.

If you have horses and cows and you are on the outskirts, remember the last cat 3 that hit florida to the carolinas? A mass death of farm animals died from flooding and wind. Help them get to higher ground and better land by asking farms in out of evacuation zones to let you use their land to keep your animals.

Hurricane Florence is a CAT 4 by the time it reaches not land, but the warm waters off our coast. It will only gain more energy the longer it stays on the water. There is always a possibility for a CAT 4 to experience CAT 5 symptoms like wind, rain, and surging without becoming a CAT 5. If you are staying put, stay put in your house where the walls are strongest. Make sure you are near the safest bathroom in case of inner storm tornado activity or structure failure. Keep all leashes on you and pets near you. If you have pets that will hide, block off their access to their hiding places. Keep their stuff just as accessible as you will your stuff.

BUY WATER NOW. BUY HURRICANE FOOD NOW. BUY BATTERIES. GET A FLASHLIGHT. DO ALL OF THIS NOW. If you are in a possible flood zone and have a small enough raft that will fit out windows, KEEP IT ON THE HIGHEST FLOOR OF YOUR HOUSE. If you are in an apartment complex in a flood zone, you need to leave. No acceptions.

Park your cars somewhere with cameras like a bank parking lot. They’ll be safer if you have trees near your home. If you have a boat in your driveway, MOVE IT AWAY.

If you have the ability, slice trees near your place that have you worried.

KEEP ALL DOORS SHUT TO BEDROOMS. If a window breaks, the pressure won’t change the rest of the house this way.

Take your pets outside on a leash when you feel it is safe enough for all of you. The eye of the storm is good for this but that can be a days worth of rain and wind. The wind isn’t always constant. Keep an eye on it and get them down there on leashes as soon as you hear it stop. You will hear the wind coming back before you see it or feel it. Be close to a door when you do this.

If you have access to a radio, use it. Put it on a station for weather. It’ll warn you of possible tornadoes in the area. A safe key though is anyone in yellow-red-purple on the radar, is in tornado alley. Keep a close eye on the sky. Don’t go to sleep.

I’m serious about shopping now. The stores will run out of food today or yesterday. Get enough water for everyone. Get bandaids too.

Get a full tank of gas too. It will run out quickly and take the gas stations days to come back. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to get an extra gallon of gas if you are leaving the area as you will find this on your way out too.

Good luck and stay away from the sea and the miles of where storm surge could occur. If you are on the coast but inland on a marsh, the surge and flooding will affect you. And they will affect you even more during high tide. The marsh can absorb a ton, but it can’t absorb this much.

If You Need To Evacuate Hurricane Florence Or You Are Staying Put

Fill your bathtubs for extra water and to flush toilets. Freeze water to keep food cool. Document EVERYTHING IN YOUR HOUSE to claim for insurance if necessary. Take all important documents and keep them with you in water proof bags.

If you trust your dishwasher, put items you love in it. It’s not fully waterproof as plumbing, once backed up, will enter through the hose at the back. But if you don’t mind that and would rather be able to keep things you love with you, store them in there. You can even do jewelry in jars with lids without them floating away if you are worried about that. If you have a safe, USE IT AND ABUSE IT.

Remember, hurricanes also mean people will come in and loot! So while you are gearing up to leave, keep this in mind for objects you are leaving behind.

Payphones Finally Good For Something After 10-Year Hiatus

by Brian Barrett

You’ve rightly ignored payphones for longer than you can remember, but they haven’t forgotten you. They been waiting there patiently in the wings, coin slots aquiver, ready for the day when a hurricane would disrupt the power that charges your fancy cellular communication machines. That’s right, New York. It’s payphone time.

Not even a hurricane can turn away the sentinel at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

Every single day since April 1948 without fail, there’s been a sentinel guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. And Hurricane Irene was no excuse to call in sick yesterday.

Can't fault the dedication to duty there, I'm very impressed

Ep. 30 Coriolis Effect - HD and the Void
The Coriolis force is a force in physics that has profound impact on us here on Earth. Listen to hear how this apparent force has influence over the weather, tides, and even some creatures. I refuse to talk about the formulas surrounding it but I ...

We’re back in 2019 with an episode that would have been more appropriate to release during hurricane season: a discussion of the Coriolis force! This force was observed centuries ago but takes its name from the scientist who first considered it in terms of theory and physics. It has an impact on a vast range of natural phenomena, from weather patterns to ocean waves to the flights of flies and moths.

Below the cut are the glossary, transcript, a timeline of the people I mention, sources, and music credits. Send me any topic suggestions via Tumblr message (you don’t need an account to do this, just submit as anonymous). You can also tweet at me on Twitter at @HDandtheVoid, or you can ask me to my face if you know me in real life. Subscribe on iTunes to get the new episodes of my so-far-monthly-updated podcast, and please please please rate and review it. Go ahead and tell friends if you think they’d like to hear it, too!

(My thoughts on the next episode are Stephen Hawking, Hedy Lamarr, or famous comets. The next episode will go up in late February.)

Glossary

Coriolis force - a force in a rotating system that acts perpendicular to the direction of motion and to the axis of rotation. On Earth, this tends to deflect moving objects to the right in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left in the Southern Hemisphere.

Ekman transport - the net motion of fluid that results from the balance between Coriolis and turbulent drag forces.

Eötvös effect - the change in perceived gravitational force that results from eastbound or westbound movement on Earth’s surface.

Kelvin waves - an ocean wave that is trapped at the Earth’s equator and along vertical boundaries like coastlines. They move towards the equator when they have a western boundary; towards the poles when they have an eastern boundary; and make a whirlpool when they have a closed boundary, moving counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere.

Lagrange points -  five points where three bodies can orbit each other, yet stay in the same position relative to each other in a stable configuration. L1-L3 are in line with each other, while L4 and L5 are at the points of equilateral triangles in the configuration.

prograde - when a planet spins from east to west.

Rossby number - used to determine the relative importance of the centrifugal and Coriolis forces in maps of weather patterns. A small Rossby number indicates that a weather system is strongly affected by Coriolis forces, while a large Rossby number signifies that a system is affected by inertial and centrifugal forces.

This shit has popped since May and I get a Sneaker Pimps "Six Underground" vibe. So get on this, MSMR very well may blow up by the end of this year. And if I'm wrong, we will still get to enjoy this song forever. Win-win.

there’s a lot of stupid scary shit in project 2025 but killing the national weather service for me (a weather nerd who has hyperfixated on this kind of stuff for years) is one of the least thought through decisions, especially with how bad tornadoes and hurricanes have gotten over the years.

like… the NWS is who alerts people about oncoming tornadoes… take that away and now you have thousands of sitting ducks who don’t know that death is barreling toward them. Despite all of the rampant destruction we’ve seen from tornadoes in even the last year alone, deaths from those events have remained in the single digits. Why? Because the NWS and NOAA have worked tirelessly to increase the amount of warning time people have between when a tornado is spotted and when it’s predicted to hit. If I remember correctly, they’ve managed to bring it from seconds of advance warning to up to 16-20 minutes, time that is instrumental in saving lives. Take that away, and now you have people scrambling around trying to figure out what’s happening on their own.

Not to mention the amount of time and research they pour into predicting tragic events like Hurricane Helene and other disasters in waiting. Idk, it’s just…

How Do Hurricanes Form?

Hurricanes are the most violent storms on Earth. People call these storms by other names, such as typhoons or cyclones, depending on where they occur.

image

The scientific term for ALL of these storms is tropical cyclone. Only tropical cyclones that form over the Atlantic Ocean or eastern and central Pacific Ocean are called “hurricanes.”

image

Whatever they are called, tropical cyclones all form the same way.

Tropical cyclones are like giant engines that use warm, moist air as fuel. That is why they form only over warm ocean waters near the equator. This warm, moist air rises and condenses to form clouds and storms.

image

As this warmer, moister air rises, there’s less air left near the Earth’s surface. Essentially, as this warm air rises, this causes an area of lower air pressure below.

image

This starts the ‘engine’ of the storm. To fill in the low pressure area, air from surrounding areas with higher air pressure pushes in. That “new” air near the Earth’s surface also gets heated by the warm ocean water so it also gets warmer and moister and then it rises.

image

As the warm air continues to rise, the surrounding air swirls in to take its place. The whole system of clouds and wind spins and grows, fed by the ocean’s heat and water evaporating from the surface.

As the storm system rotates faster and faster, an eye forms in the center. It is vey calm and clear in the eye, with very low air pressure.

image

Tropical cyclones usually weaken when they hit land, because they are no longer being “fed” by the energy from the warm ocean waters. However, when they move inland, they can drop many inches of rain causing flooding as well as wind damage before they die out completely.

There are five types, or categories, of hurricanes. The scale of categories is called the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale and they are based on wind speed.

image

How Does NASA Study Hurricanes?

Our satellites gather information from space that are made into pictures. Some satellite instruments measure cloud and ocean temperatures. Others measure the height of clouds and how fast rain is falling. Still others measure the speed and direction of winds.

image

We also fly airplanes into and above hurricanes. The instruments aboard planes gather details about the storm. Some parts are too dangerous for people to fly into. To study these parts, we use airplanes that operate without people.

To learn more about how we study hurricanes, visit: https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/hurricanes/main/index.html

Thoughts on Love #11

You were a silent storm. Looming until finally you broke and I was washed out by downpours and blinded by lightning. Although it wasn't the thunder that rocked my world, only when I reached the eye of the storm did I see the peace and stillness of your true self- the one that I fell in love with. That was the part that shook my world, creating a new storm inside myself
