Book Review - The Children Act by Ian McEwan
BLURB : Fiona Maye, a leading High Court judge, renowned for her fierce intelligence and sensitivity is called on to try an urgent case. For religious reasons, a seventeen-year-old boy is refusing the medical treatment that could save his life. Time is running out. She visits the boy in hospital - an encounter which stirs long-buried feelings in her and powerful new emotions in the boy. This book is amazing. I got it at Christmas and devoured it in days, bringing me out of a long reading slump. It raises an issue that is incredibly divisive in our society and offered viewpoints I have never considered before. I also really enjoyed all of the technical law talk and mentions of other interesting and thought-provoking cases. The characters are very human and Fiona is especially relatable (even though she is a 59 year old High Court judge).
I would recommend this book for all aged 14/15+ and I think it is a very thought-provoking and interesting read for everyone.
