About the French languange

image

I started learning French two weeks ago, just as a hobby. I've always thought it's a wonderful language and whenever I heard someone say basically anything in French, my heart melted a little bit out of awe. Despite my former respect towards the language, it's never been a part of my endless list of interests. Until now!

Though I'm a mere beginner, a punk amateur, I feel I've found something of utter brilliance. As words form sentences and as a tiny bit of poetry slowly implants itself into the uninhabited plains of my mind, I'm loving it more and more. Though I've sampled several languages in my short life and have attained acceptable skills regarding one or two, nothing compares to French.

I find it inexpressible what a joy it is to be able to say 'You're perfect' in French and make it truly mean what it's intended to; or to be able to listen to this ethereal melody and have something of it understood. It's like falling in love. It's like discovering a very old book, which surpasses your taste in contemporary literature or basically just anything you've ever read in your whole life.

I'm so glad I started this. And it makes me enthusiastic of many other things. The beginning of something wondrous, like this, is always a perfect reminder of the fact, that there are infinite options, infinite chances in life. And the majority of them is better than I could ever dream. I realised, that there's just so much to do. Tomorrow, when I wake up, I'll know I have amazing and beautiful things to do, besides life's endlessly grave side. I invite you to start learning a language you've always wanted to, or to finally get to read (COMPLETELY) War and Peace, or just simply to begin a journey of any kind, which will make you more as a person and as a part of the ever-expanding interconnection of us: the people. Our days can get boring and miserable every now and then, but it's never, NEVER, unchangeable.

That's crazy, you have this person who is basically family, and there's no indication of that when you talk to or about them? I didn't even know that was not a thing for some people, let alone that it was a race thing. Granted I'm white so I can't speak to non-white POVs but if you'd asked me 5 minutes ago I would have told you that Auntie/Uncle FamilyFriend was universal.

Seeing white people in fiction call friends of their parents "Uncle/Aunt ___" wigs me out because I have never done that a day in my life and I don't know any other white people who do that. We don't even do this with my sister's godparents. They're just like, George and Melanie. An adult friend of your parents is either Mx. Lastname or their first name exclusively, there is no other option for me.

Thinking of Deep Space Nine as "the Dark Star Trek" without digging into what made Deep Space Nine work is so reductive. Like when people discuss Star Trek being "dark" now people bring up "DS9 was Dark and you loved that! Trekkies would hate it now!"

Deep Space Nine didn't work bc it was Dark and it wasn't Dark out of nowhere. Deep Space Nine is intimately tied to TNG in a way no other series is with another (Voyager could've been just as rooted in DS9, but. Y'know. Wasn't). Not only in characters, but that the show is so devoted to exploring deep cuts from TNG: the Bajorans, but also the Ferengi, long dismissed as failed villains, and the Trill, one-off aliens-of-the-week who DS9's writers turned into one of Trek's major species. The central thesis of DS9 isn't that the Trek Universe Is Fucked Up Actually. It's that things get more messy and complicated when Starfleet has to stick around and not dash off to another planet at the end of the episode

DS9 is darker than other Treks, yes, but DS9 is also the warmest, with the most grounded, human characters, not in spite of the fact that two-thirds of the cast are aliens but because of it. The writers treat alien characters as not representatives, but individuals. They treat everyone as individuals, with foibles and flaws, not as perfect, straitlaced future people. DS9's dark episodes are darker than other Treks, but also it's more willing to get silly and emotional. Only DS9 could do the "Sisko confesses to a conspiracy to get the Romulans in the war" episode, but also only DS9 could do the "a holographic lounge singer tries to get Odo and Kira together" episode right after it. Boiling the entire series down to "Deep Space Nine was the Dark Star Trek! Grimdark!" is...just not it

Cell cultures... pluses and minuses

– You need to come every other day to feed them, otherwise they die or differentiate. – You have to come on weekends too. – If you are not super super careful, some bacteria or yeast will eat them up. – Even if you are super super careful, some bacteria or yeast will sometimes eat them up. – In experiments, there are huge differences in the behavior of cells so you will have huge errors and have to repeat the experiments multiple times to prove your point.

+ You have to do it, so your other studies are tested on something alive and thus are proved relevant.

That's it. Nothing else to the + list. Cells are bitches. You have to nurture them and pamper them and sacrifice weekends, and then they die or behave unpredictably.

Siamese Crocodile

Siamese Crocodile

The Siamese crocodile is a critically endangered species. It is a medium-sized, freshwater species native to South-Eastern Asia, with a smooth snout and a bony crest behind each eye. Members of this species are generally not aggressive, with only five recorded incidents of attacks against humans. They also feature prominently in the folklore of Central Thailand.

I read this little fact in my King Island book and i don't see it come up in any other source and it really makes some other aspects of the culture make sense so i wanted to share:

In Inupiaq cultural tradition, men would fast when they hunted. They would get up at dawn, test the weather by standing barefoot near the entrance of the house, and if hunting was an option, they'd have a little water and no food before heading out. A man wouldn't eat anything that day until he got home in the evening

(not Mine:concept Art-Lorax)

(not mine:concept art-Lorax)

-------------------------------------------------------------------

It's so sinister that I just imagined a story where in the end, Once-ler, seeing that there are no more trees left, decides to go against the Lorax like "you would be a good Thneed" blinded by greed, that would make him a completely sick monster…mmm, material for a horror story.

I don't know if something like this has already been done, if so… God that would be great <33

i require more wols who DON’T forgive the exarch for what he did. who don’t forgive g’raha for what he did, while still having a good relationship with him

tiamat will never forgive him for what he did during 5.0, despite all else, and that’s just a thing they both have to live with. he left once, devastated her, then planned to not only leave again, but not even give her the chance at having him back before pulling a heroic suicide, managing to fuck that up and compound the upset on itself tenfold with his decisions that would have shut her out. she can’t forgive him for that bc it’s going to haunt her for a very, very long time, and no amount of apologies will undo that hurt. he knows this and it’s a regret he must simply live with.

i have a great need for more complexity with this bc there’s so much potential for rly getting into the consequences of his stunt and exploring how it would affect their trust long-term…

me n my wol who does not trust her favorite person in the world bc of the pain he inflicted on her, even if she loves him more than anything and is happy being with him. shit’s just like that sometimes

if youve never physically been in the presence of like, a real live wolf, and you probably wont get the chance to, heres some stuff about them you should know

a wolf’s fur is so unbelievably thick that you can get like, your whole hand into it while petting. and then you can keep going

wolves are a lot bigger than you think they are. think about how big you think a wolf is then just like double that

they dont really smell like dog but they DO smell and youre not going to be able to figure out if its a good smell or not

a wolf really wants to lick the inside of your mouth. he will not stop trying to lick the inside of your mouth at any cost, and generally speaking you need to press your lips together kind of tightly when he approaches your face so that he doesnt worm his damn tongue in there to give you what he thinks is an appropriate greeting

a wolf doesnt really want to look at you while you pet him but he wants you to pet him. hes embarrassed

if a grown ass wolf decides to lay down on you, you just have to deal with it and thats your life now

young wolves, much like young dogs, are overwhelmingly goofy and stupid. a teenage wolf will see your very fragile, very human shoulder and go “i can probably step on that with my full weight” and then he will do it

letting a wolf eat out of your hand is actually not remotely frightening, and youll want to do it all day

Can eyeballs bounce? Like if you were to scoop someone's eye out and it came out in perfect shape would it bounce if it fell on the floor?

I’m not sure. They can be rubbery, but I’m not sure if the force required to make them bounce wouldn’t also make them go splat.

Maybe some biology/med students know (I don’t deal much with eyeballs as a Chemistry major).

Deadvlei, The Dead Marsh It Is Amazing The Effect Water Can Have In Bringing Life, And Then Taking It

Deadvlei, the dead marsh It is amazing the effect water can have in bringing life, and then taking it from an area. Deadvlei is a white clay pan in Namibia near the Tsauchab River. During an especially heavy period of rain, the river flooded leading to a shallow surface layer of water forming over the clay pan. This water allowed Camel Thorn trees to grow and then mature. However, during a drought the water dried up, and sand dunes around the edge of the clay pan blocked the river’s flood path into the area. This drought lead to the trees dying, approximately 700 years ago. Despite the death of the trees, the skeletons remain and despite being blackened by the sun, appear structurally as they would have when they died. This lack of decomposition has occurred, again, due to lack of water as the trees cannot decompose without it. ~SA Image credit: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Deadvlei_trees_dunes.JPG

For more photos from Matheus, follow @matheusbeltrao on Instagram.

"I have always been interested in the way cultural references from all over the world can mesh together to form a collage of something unique," explains Brazil Instagrammer Matheus Beltrao (@matheusbeltrao).

Born and raised in the northeastern city of Recife, Matheus currently attends university as a film student. He traces his love for film back to an early passion: “I have always been fascinated by media and pop culture. Growing up I was really drawn to television, especially telenovelas, or Brazilian soap operas. Later, my love for film developed, as I became captivated by the way movies brought together photography and music.”

Now, Matheus brings his love of art and photography to his own photography on Instagram—a step he sees as integral for art to progress as a whole. “I hope that through art I can find other likeminded folks and that together we can change certain aspects of life. I think that Instagram and other social networks can be tools to help us start revolutions.”

Finally continuing on a book that i really really need to return to the uni library; and just skipped a chapter (they're independent essays) because it wasn't relevant/interesting to me; but this next chapter is coming through within the first paragraph:

"To know another's language and not his culture is a very good way to make a fluent fool of yourself"

- attributed to Winston Brembeck
