TYPEFACE Film poster. Hand drawn, etched into wood, individually inked up and printed on an Albion Press by Daren Newman.
Wedding invitation for two dear friends, Dorka & Niko. The maze is built from a combination of all the good things they love (a cat, a car, flowers, a garden gnome, coffee...) and of the things, that will remind them of @achillespark where the wedding took place. By solving the maze, the couple meet in the center. The cards are letterpress printed by @inkredibleletterpress with two colours and yellow edge painting.
Professor Knopphauser’s Chilli Sauce Labels
Labels for Justin Knopp's (Typoretum) home-made chilli sauces. Ever since I know Justin, I am a huge admirer of his typographic laboratory and chilli garden. So when he asked me to design the labels of his annual chilli sauces I thought, this will be the perfect opportunity to draw limitless details, hidden puzzles and wicked characters, which will perfectly fit Professor Knopphauser's laboratory!

The label is depicting the making of the chilli sauces, on which occasion, skeletons and devilish creatures are gathered in the dungeons of Typoretum. In the background of this diabolic kitchen, there are objects, posters and instruments, which are related to Justin in a way or another. Sadly, this illustration, however true it may seem is not an accurate interpretation of the cooking process, so put down the torches and pitchforks guys!

For the finished illustration Justin has chosen colours to match the sauces perfectly, then he letterpress printed them on his Gietz Hand Feeder. The label cropped size is 145×85mm.

Ezt tegnap rajzoltam, de ez egyelőre még csak egy próbarajz egy készülő könyvhöz. Misztótfalusi éppen a szakácskönyvét nyomtatja. Már biztos fáradt volt, hogy az első oldalon fejjel lefelé szedte a címet.

Feketerigó képeslap
Nincs mit tenni, ez a madár az egyik legjobb. Imádom amikor télen a bokrokban kutatnak és tűzpiros bogyókkal a csőrükben repülnek el. A képeslapot még tavaly terveztem, de csak idén tudtam lenyomtatni Juhász Marci műhelyében, Munken Polar (600g) és Pure (300g) papírokra, három színnel, fotópolimer kliséről, egy asztali tégelysajtón.

Blackbird postcard
Winter is amazing when everything is covered with snow and blackbirds have feast in the firethorn bushes, with those bright red berries in their beaks. This is my favourite bird, so I made this postcard. It was printed on a tabletop letterpress machine, onto 600g Munken Polar white paper and 300g Munken Pure cream coloured paper, from polymer plate, with grey, red and black colours.

Presstival 2015
Idén újra 10 szép napot töltöttünk az angliai Whittingtonban Rebekával, Balázzsal, Barbival és Pufival. Rebekával már régóta terveztük, hogy egyszer visszalátogatunk a Presstivalra, amit minden év szeptember első szombatján rendez a Whittington Press. A fesztivál egy kicsi, de annál nemzetközibb esemény. Idén érkeztek árusok Írországból, Csehországból, Franciaországból és Lengyelországból is, valamint nem csak nyomatokat lehetett vásárolni, hanem tapétákat, fém és fabetűket, hasznos és szép könyveket, festményeket, Miriam Macgregor gyönyörű pochoir-it, márványozott papírt, jegyzetfüzeteket és finom yorkshire-i mézet.
Lehetőségünk volt rá, hogy egy asztalnál a saját munkáinkat is áruljuk, így a többiekkel együtt miénk volt a magyar asztal. Sokféle nyomatot vittünk magunkkal az eseményre: ☛ Rebeka a papírkivágásaiból készült giclée nyomatokat és arannyal felülnyomott giclée nyomatokat vitt magával. Utóbbiak csodaszép starking almák, olyanok mint amik Fantastic Mr Fox végén vannak a szupermarketben. Ha kíváncsiak vagytok, az Etsyjén megtaláljátok mindet. ☛ Barbi az euró diplomájához készült nyomatokat, meseillusztrációkat és néhány Mester és Margarita rézkarcot tett ki, amiket pedig az ő Etsyjén láthattok. ☛ Pufi az AMI űrállomásról készült szitanyomott posztert és híres angol épületeket ábrázoló magasnyomott képeslapokat árult (és neki is van Etsyje). ☛ Én a feketerigós képeslapomat és néhány a Rumcsempészhez készült csontvázas nyomatot tettem ki.
A Presstival utáni napokban eljutottunk az Oxford Guild of Printers találkozójára, ahol Jamie Murphy tartott előadást a nyomdájáról és könyveiről. Jamie egy fiatal nyomdász, aki főleg illusztrált könyvek kiadásával foglalkozik a dublini Salvage Pressben, és nem mellesleg egyetemi szakdolgozatát Orosz Istvánról és a DOPP munkásságáról írta. Nagyon szép munkái vannak és a Salvage Press weboldalán mindegyiket meg is tudjátok nézni.
Szabadidőnkben amikor nem a bárányokkal kávéztunk akkor nyomtattunk. Én Nostalgic Train címmel egy képeslapot készítettem, de valószínűleg ez a kifejezés csak német nyelvterületen létezik, mindenesetre nagyon sokat nevettük rajta, ezért került bele. A nyomat egy FAG Proof Pressen, Neuland (Rudolf Koch 1923) és Gill bold (Eric Gill 1928) betűtípusok és Stephenson Blake vonatok felhasználásával, 130 grammos Matrix Fine Laid papírra készült.
Pufi készített egy videót és fotókat is az útról. Köszönet John és Patrick Randlenek, hogy vendégül láttak minket a nyomdájukban! És köszönet Robert Pratleynek a fuvarért Charlburybe!
Presstival 2015
Last month we spent 10 beautiful days in the Whittington Press in England with Rebeka, Balázs, Barbi and Richard. Rebeka and I had the idea to visit the Presstival again, since we were there in 2013. The event is on the first Saturday of September in every year, and it is a small but international festival to letterpress printers from all around the world (some people calls it the Glastonbury of printers). This year sellers came from Czech, France and Poland, and not only prints were on offer, you could buy metal and wooden type, useful and beautiful books, paintings, amazing pochoirs from Miriam Macgregor, marbled papers, sketchbooks and delicious honey from Yorkshire.
This year we had a chance to have a stall so we had the Hungarian Table and we brought a wide variety of stuff: ☛ Rebeka had giclée prints from her papercuts and letterpressed giclée prints about Starking apples (you could have seen this kind of apple in Fantastic Mr Fox, at the supermarket scene). You can see Rebeka’s prints on her Etsy. ☛ Barbi brought etchings what she made for her degree project, and some illustrations for Master and Margarita, you can find her Etsy account as well. ☛ Richard made a silkscreen poster about the AMI space station and printed postcards about famous English buildings, here you can see his prints on his Etsy. ☛ I took the Turdus Merula postcard, woodcuts about skeletons from the Rumsmuggler board game and prints about Gutenberg’s home with me.
After the Presstival we attended a talk of the Oxford Guild of Printers, where Jamie Murphy had a presentation about his press and books. Jamie is a Dublin based young printer who mainly publish illustrated books in the Salvage Press (you can see all of his books with detailed texts on his website), and by the way he wrote his thesis about the works of Hungarian poster artist, my former teacher at the university, István Orosz and the DOPP group.
In our free time, after we finished our coffees with the sheep, we made prints! My project was the Nostalgic Train, probably this expression only exists in German-language area, but we laughed a lot about it, so I wanted to include it. This postcard was printed on a FAG Proof Press, with Neuland (Rudolf Koch 1923) and Gill bold (Eric Gill 1928) typefaces and with a Stephenson Blake train set, onto 130gr Matrix Fine Laid paper.

Téli képeslapok Idén az Ink Letterpressel összefogva, közösen készítettünk magasnyomott, téli képeslap csomagot. A tervezéshez a Halisten Stúdió minden hala nagyon jó, személyre szabott témát kapott az Ink Letterpresstől. Nekem a tél címere volt megadva, a pajzsban végül a Télkirályt jelenítettem meg, körülötte téli ágakat, felette pedig egy fenyvest, a szokásos sisak helyett.

Winter Postcards Ink Letterpress and Halisten Stúdió designed a winter collection of letterpress cards. Each of us in Halisten got a short brief, based on our earlier works, coat of arms of winter was my theme. I put the Winterking in the shield, winter branches around it and a pine forest on top of it, instead of the usual helmet.
Five designs are available one-by one, or in a package, in the Etsy shop of Ink Letterpress.

Amint vége lett a kéthetes whittingtoni kurzusunknak, Rebekával vonatra ültünk és keletre utaztunk, hogy néhány napot eltöltsünk a Typoretumnál is. Nagyon jó volt látni őket egy év után! (Amit tavaly csináltunk arról valószínűleg csak akkor fogok írni, ha befejeződik a projekt, addig itt lehet követni: www.typoretum.co.uk/woodentypes)
A Typoretum egy családi nyomda, amit Justin Knopp és felesége Cecilia Knopp alapítottak 2008-ban. A hely ahol dolgoznak habár kicsi, de annál izgalmasabb, mert minden zugban antik betűk, szerszámok és gépek rejtőznek és a kertjük is igazán vicces a csirkeól mellett és a virágágyásban elrejtett reklámfeliratokkal. Justin elszántan gyűjti a fém és fabetűket, valamint a nyomtatáshoz kapcsolódó minden egyéb eszközt. Nehéz is választani, hogy melyik a legkedvesebb dolog számomra, de azt hiszem, hogy a fém korona készlet eléggé elöl végezne a listámon. A Typoretumnál azonban nem csak gyűjtenek, hanem tovább is adják a tudást amit megszereztek. Rendszeresen tartanak kurzusokat és ajánlanak gyakorlati lehetőséget mindazoknak akik érdeklődnek a nyomtatás mestersége iránt.
A Typoretum Coggeshallban, egy kicsi, középkori hangulatú és békés angliai faluban található. A legtöbb ház favázas, növényekkel és állatfigurákkal díszítve, és mivel már igen öregek minden irányba dőlnek mint egy Tim Burton film díszletei. A házakon kívül a temetőkert is igazán szimpatikus volt a félig kidőlt, már olvashatatlanná vált sírkövekkel. Tavaly szinte minden nap arra jártunk, mert az volt a legrövidebb út a szállásunk és a nyomda között. Ha ez még nem volna elég angolos, ottlétünk alatt a piacteret kis háromszög zászlókkal díszítették. A piacot csütörtökönként tartják ahol igazán ínycsiklandozó dolgokat lehet venni, de inkább hasonlít egy itteni kézműves vásárra, mint egy átlagos piacra. Ha előfordul, hogy arra jártok, ajánlom mindenképpen a környékbeli bolhapiacokat amik gyalog megközelítve igazán jó alkalmat adnak a környék felfedezésére és egy kis kincskeresésre. Arrafelé a bolhapiacot carboot sale-nek nevezik, mivel az árusok autóval érkeznek egy mező közepére és sokszor onnan is árulják a megunt holmijaikat.
On the Origin of Species poszter Tavaly láttam egy filmet Darwin életéről a Creation-t, ami nálunk Teremtés címmel jelent meg, és azóta érdeklődöm az evolúció iránt. Így a Fajok eredetének címoldalát választottam a plakáthoz, mert szövegének hosszúsága lehetőséget adott arra, hogy játszhassak a betűkkel. Amikor megérkeztünk Justin megkért minket, hogy ha szeretnénk dolgozni a nyomdában és ha van kedvünk használjuk a betűket amiket nemrég vásárolt. Volt egy betű, a Grecian (hasonló egy extra keskeny Clarendonhoz) ami első látásra megtetszett és szerettem volna használni. Kiegészítő betűnek választottam a talpatlan Gill Sans mellé. Utóbbi mindig furcsa volt nekem, mert nem szerettem a betűformáit egyesével, de mire végeztem a plakáttal, már minden porcikáját megszerettem. Az Origin of Species szövegrészlethez Gill Sans fabetűvel szedtem, a többi talpatlan szöveghez, Gill Sans fémbetűket használtam. A Grecian-ön kívül a dőlt talpas részt egy ismeretlen betűből szedtem. A nyomtatáshoz pedig Justinék egyik hatalmas, öntöttvas Albionját használtam, kézi festékezéssel. A papírok amiket kaptam, szintén gyönyörűek voltak, a legkedvesebb számomra az a száz év körüli papír volt amiben egy kecskebak vízjele látható. Természetesen a plakáton elrejtettem egy helyesírási hibát is.
When we finished the two weeks course at Whittington, we traveled with Rebeka to Typoretum, where we spent some extra days. It was so good to see them again after a year! (I still haven't write about those months, but the project we worked is still in progress, so when it's finished I'll write a lot about it.)
Typoretum is a family run letterpress workshop founded by Justin Knopp and his wife Cecilia Knopp in 2008. Altough their place is small, it is filled with amazing antique letters, tools and machines and its garden is so funny with the big wooden letters in the flower bed or next to the chicken hen. Justin is devotedly collects metal and wooden types and things associated with letterpress. I can hardly say what was my favourite part of the workshop, but the metal crown collection is almost on the top of the list. They are not only collect the things, but pass on the knowledge to anyone who want to learn, and they regularly held short courses and offer internship opportunities for letterpress printers, designers, students and enthusiasts.
Typoretum is located in Coggeshall, which is a little peaceful village in Essex, with a medieval atmosphere. Most buildings are centuries old timber framed houses. They are slanted in every direction, like in a Tim Burton movie, and beautifully carved ornaments and figures decorate them. When we were there buntings are adorned the Market Square. The usual Thursday market is a good event, but if you happen to be there I highly recommend the carboot sales what are good opportunities for a Sunday walk across the fields and for a little treasure hunting. We really enjoyed to explore the public footpaths and get lost sometimes in the countryside, and finally this year we tried to bicycle in the inverted traffic. We really liked the system of the allotments where people from the village can grow vegetables for themselves and the churchyard what is the most typical cemetery what you can imagine with old and tangled graves.
On the Origin of Species poster Last year in Coggeshall I saw with Rebeka the film about Darwin's life, the Creation, and since then, I am interested in the evolution and Darwin's life. So I choosed the first page of Darwin's famous book, On the Origin of Species. It was suitable for this project because it is long enough to play with typography. When we arrived, Justin asked us to use his new wood type if we would like to make something in the press. There was one type, called Grecian (what looks like an extra condensed Clarendon) what I knew at first sight, that I wanted to use. I choosed it for an additional font with the Gill Sans, what was always a black sheep for me. I did not really liked the letters individually, but when I finished with this poster I appreciated every bit of it. For the Origin of Species part of the text Gill Condensed wooden type and for every other sans on the poster Gill Sans regular metal type were used. The italic part were setted from an unknown old style font. For printing I used their Albion with hand inking. Various papers were used during the process, the most interesting was the almost hundred years old one, with the goat embossement. (Of course I put a spelling mistake in the text.)

Idén négy hetet töltöttünk Rebekával különböző angliai nyomdákban, ezúton is köszönjük a Campus Hungarynek a lehetőséget. Ajánlom mindenkinek, hogy pályázzon aki egyetemre jár. Most következzen az első két hetünk.
Tizenhárman indultunk el a soproni AMIból, hogy két hetet töltsünk el Patrick Randle-el nyomdájában, a Nomad Letterpressben, Whittingtonban. Patrick egy fedél alatt dolgozik édesapjával, John-nal aki a Whittington Press-t vezeti. A műhelyük egy délnyugat-angliai kis faluban, egy 16. századi uradalmi ház udvarán kapott helyet a régi kertészlakban. A vidék ahol a nyomda működik zöldell és mindenfelé birkanyájak legelnek rajta. Nincs is annál jobb közéjük telepedve meginni a reggeli kávét.
A projekt amin ottlétünk alatt dolgoztunk egy bemutatkozó kis könyv volt, aminek a SZIA címet adtuk. Az ötlet, hogy együtt dolgozzunk valamin már az elejétől fogva nagyon tetszett nekünk. Mivel szerettük volna összefogni valamivel a különböző oldalakat, eldöntöttük, hogy mindegyik kezdődjön úgy: Szia én vagyok, vagy Szia a nevem, így nagyjából meghatároztuk azt is mi fog megjelenni egy-egy oldalon, de mégis teljesen szabadon használhatta ki mindenki a rendelkezésre álló felületet és tölthette meg saját mondanivalóval. Az első napokban azt gondoltuk, hogy jó lesz ha oldalpárt tervezünk, de később amellett döntöttünk, hogy elég lesz egy oldal fejenként, a nyomtatási folyamat így is négy teljes napunkba telt két FAG Proof Press együttes használatával. A tervezéssel nagyon jól haladtunk, az első hét végére már egymás mellé tudtuk tenni a próbanyomatokat és kialakítani a megfelelő sorrendet, amiben minden oldal érvényesülni tudott. Az oldalakhoz majdnem mindenki készített illusztrációkat, linómetszettel, kalligráfiával vagy éppen a fém illetve fa betűk felhasználásával. A kiadványból 20 hibátlan példányt szerettünk volna nyomtatni, de végül 23 sikerült, aminek nagyon örültünk!
Mindenki nagyon kedves ott, ha csak arra jártok, mondjátok meg nekik, hogy üdvözlöm őket, és nézzetek körül mindenképpen a nyomdában és a kastély körül is.
This year we spent four weeks in two letterpress studios in England with Rebeka. This is about the first two weeks.
Thirteen Hungarian students (including us) set off from the University of West Hungary to spend two weeks with Patrick Randle, in the Nomad Letterpress in Whittington, where Pat's father John Randle, works as well and runs the Whittington Press. Their workshop is in a very small village, in the yard of an old and beautiful 16th century manor house. The countryside was fresh and filled with herds of sheep, sometimes we just sat next to the lambs when we drunk our coffee at morning.
Our project was to make a little introduction booklet. We gave it the title SZIA /ˈsijɑ/ which means HI in Hungarian. Working on a book together was an idea we truly liked, we wanted to do something we could collaborate on. We decided that every page should start with ‘Hi I am’ or ‘Hello my name is’. This defined the boundaries of the book, but also gave a theme for the designs, where all of us could have make something really personal. Firstly we started design in one facing page per person, later we decided it should only be a single page, because of the length of the printing process, which still took us four days to finish with two FAG proof presses. At the end of the first week, we were able to put together our proofs, and make the best order, in which every page can acquire attention. For illustrations we have used type, calligraphy and linocuts what we have made at Whittington. We prepared to print at least 20 flawless copies, at the end we sewed 23 issues from SZIA.
I would like to thank again to John & Patrick Randle, to Mrs Nomad, to Miriam Macgregor and to Jenny Stringer and her family, we had a great time there!

A Fabetűk Bőségszaruja Nyers fordításban ez a Typoretum készülő fabetű mintakönyvének a címe. A könyv bemutatásához elindítottak egy blogot is, ahol oldalról oldalra lehet követni a készítés körüli fejleményeket. Szerepelünk Rebekával mi is, de rajtunk kívül azért még van az oldalon pár érdekes dolog. Látható a fabetű gyűjteményük, és a muzeális XIX. századi nyomdagépükről is van egy rövid leírás.
Cornucopia of Wooden Types
This is the title of Typoretum's book in preparation, for which they started a blog, where the process of making can be seen. There is a little about the designers, where you can read about Rebeka and me, but there are a lot of interesting things on the page. Their collection of wood types, and some description about their unique printing press, the Wharfedale from the 19th century.

Rebeka and I have just finished our three months Erasmus internship at Typoretum in Coggeshall, England. We learned a lot about letterpress printing, the culture and the carboot sales. At Typoretum our main task was to design some pages for their wooden type specimen book, called The Cornucopia of Wooden Types.
We are very lucky to have spent 3 months with them. Thank you for their hospitality and kindness! It was a great fun!
De workshop en bunkertype
El sábado 10 de marzo una de las mitades de Retina&Retinette se fue de workshop para aprender la técnica de la impresión con tipos móviles. Lo hizo en bunkertype, un pequeño espacio que como bien su nombre indica, podría haber pasado por un bunker en la guerra civil. Allí Jesús Morentín, diseñador y docente, organiza workshops una vez al mes para enseñar lo que él ha ido aprendiendo a golpe de recuerdos (proviene de família de impresores) y más tarde haciendo algún curso para revivir todo lo que de pequeño era tan habitual en su entorno. Hoy colecciona un número enorme de famílias tipográficas de madera y de plomo, las tiende metódicamente ordenadas en un puzzle de cajas y de olor a tinta.
