Eventually through the power of friendship, light grows to acknowledge his regret in his killings and becomes a better person.
Somewhere in the story lights past is revealed
Light missing L
Ken, light, and izzy have a lot of guinness people descuseones
this was supposed to look completely different but i gave up. let’s pretend light has any sense
happy birthday light yagami. i’ve been dissecting your brain with a fork for over 3 years now and i still find something new about you to obsess over everyday it’s not funny.
something something light writing multiple possible spellings of his second victim’s name in the death note because he only heard it being spoken and doesn’t know what characters it is written with and not getting it right within his first four tries this time rendering the death note useless and thinking the first heart attack was just a freaky coincidence
i was on a "thinking about ryuk" kick earlier and. i get the appeal of saying he's the only one who sees light in his entirety — it makes perfect sense, he's the one who light monologues to about his grand plans, he's the one who light stays with practically 24/7 for five years — but i don't think it's completely true?
ryuk to me has this tendency to assume that light is straightforwardly malicious (see: he thinks light was lying when light says he'll avenge his father if soichiro ever gets killed by kira, he doesn't really get why light wants to do things like reveal his location to L until light explains he wants to eliminate L entirely, he takes the "i wish i had wings" thing seriously as though it's supposed to be part of light's Master Plan instead of a little quirk that light was clearly feeling vulnerable about, he's surprised when light isn't willing to kill sayu in the second arc). like there's real fondness for light in there as well, he congratulates light for getting into college for instance, but i don't really feel like ryuk has ever. understood him fully. he's trying, he gets better at it over time, but he does have a bias.
and i think, also, that this is because ryuk has another tendency to assume that light is just like him.
which makes sense, because light is the one who offers up "i was bored, too" as a genuine point of commonality between them. and then ryuk jumps to "you know, you'd make a really good shinigami!" and "hey light do you want the eyes" and then at the end "we eased each other's boredom for quite a while." he does notice when light is acting weird and tries to adjust his viewpoint (he goes ! when light starts doing his "i've never been so humiliated in my whole life" thing) but given that he only figures out light genuinely cares for his sister when he refuses to sacrifice her, after five years of watching this whole family dynamic, i don't think he ever actually gets there.
which is. sad. it's really goddamn sad. you know you're really fucked when even the demon haunting you can't figure you out

i just remembered that before i watched death note for the first time, i was under the impression that l and light were the same character. i thought light turned into l when he used the death note and was then called dark yagami.
death note au where everything is the same except light yagami wears earrings
lawlight but they’re only together because they’re committing to the mindgame bit too hard to try getting one another’s identities is so funny
old men L and Light side-by-side on their deathbeds, holding hands as their three kids solemnly sit on the side. L is like “if Light dies first and criminals stop dying he’s DEFINITELY Kira” and Light is like “if L dies first maybe the obituary will have his real name”
death note au where everything is the same except light yagami wears earrings
if you watch death note in dub light yagami instantly becomes 100x funnier
Why do you say fanon! Light is Mikami? Just curious,as I like both guys in the manga.
... the ask I just answered about Light 'splitting obsessively into good and evil' and 'seeing himself as a chosen one' is a pretty good example, actually. Mikami does these things, Light does not.
But when I made the post, I was actually thinking of smaller things.
People like to make Light out to be some extreme stickler for the rules, a super-nerd who would never do something improper. This is not true - the kid trespasses at abandoned buildings for a hobby. He knows how to keep up appearances, but he has no intrinsic need to be Right and Proper at all times.
(And then you get things like the TV Drama literally giving Light a chunk of Mikami's backstory.............)
This is from vol 3.
He almost always leans on his hand while sitting.
He isn’t quite fond of guns.
This is anime-only, but he likes walking around with his eyes closed.
Despite how the fandom seems to believe he’s ambidextrous, I think he’s right-handed. He wears his watch on his left arm and uses his right hand to write when he has both of his hands available. Him being able to use his other hand when necessary does not make him ambidextrous.
He’s rather quiet. He doesn’t engage in conversation a lot.
He likes video games.
His room is usually dim-lit.
He uses the subway to go to To-Oh.
He has his own stupid little tv in his room.

L calls Light “homocidal” and Light’s like “it’s spelled homicidal” and L just stares.
whenever someone calls light yagami a psychopath i start frothing at the mouth.
It's a unique type of frustration when you agree that a character is deeply flawed but other people keep missing what's actually wrong with them and assigning them new flaws that they don't even have it's like free my man he did none of that. He did a bunch of other shit tho.
you can’t let me consume a single analysis of light yagami. ever. i will bite it and rip it to shreds like a fucking animal and scream the lyrics to alumina to explain my reasoning. i will shove volume one of the manga into everyone’s face to prove that he wasn’t completely evil and was just a naive kid who tried to make a difference in a world he saw as rotten. i will set the relight dvds on fire and watch as the shinigami light theory turns to ash because death is equal and all humans go to nothingness when they die. i will force everyone to sit down and watch a powerpoint presentation of my creation detailing the toxicity of light and misa’s relationship and how light felt because he is so goddamn aroace-coded. but at the same time i will play every single scene where light thinks of L after he dies and analyze it under the lens that he just misses him so much and he’s just so bored without him. i’ll also scream in their ears about how light was severely depressed and just needed an outlet and that outlet was the murder of innocents that he made himself believe was righteous. then i’ll fucking kill them because i’m the only person who has ever been right about light yagami ever, no further comments :)
my boy my boy my boy
im thinking of spending my entire 2023 to just sketch things, in the past few years i’ve been too obsessed with creating full paintings
If I have to see one more "Light was so dumb for giving everybody heart attacks instead of changing the types of deaths to different things" galaxy brain post....
He did it on purpose.... it's literally in chapter one...
here are my favourite recurring light yagami behaviours:
- *hysterical screaming tantrum* *sudden perfect calm* literally no transition between the two
- responding to a direct question by staring at his hands for five minutes while he thinks of the perfect non-suspicious response, then not actually saying the response out loud
- putting on a performance for the truman show
- alien emulating human behaviour by reading the wikipedia page, convinced he’s doing a bang-up job
- the sincere and unironic belief that adultery will make him look less suspicious
Yes I am aware he has committed atrocities but have you considered that he’s my special guy
Best things about Light Yagami:
He once ate a piece of a notebook that can kill people to destroy evidence.
He plays Mario Kart with a god of death.
He gets to his entrance exams (which will pretty much define his future) 10 mins before the test because *he hates waiting*.
He basically built a bomb inside his desk and decided he could get away with it saying he didn't want people to read his diary.
This scene.
L everytime Light sees him:
