My favorite ladies: Fandom edition
1) Mara Jade Skywalker. I will admit it: I LOVE Star Wars, and I’ve loved it since I was four. As an eleven year old I got into the Expanded Universe, and I immediately loved Mara. She’s brave, intelligent, independent, she kicks ass like no other, and she’s more than just a pretty face. Raised as a child by Emperor Palpatine to be one of his Hands (top assassins), she was entirely obedient to him to the point of trying to kill Luke Skywalker when he commanded her to; until, of course, she started to realize that Palpatine was nothing but a manipulative bastard, and then she ended up marrying said Skywalker later on down the road. (Luke and Mara are absolutely amazing together, and they’ve been one of my OTPs for over a decade now.)
2) Martha Jones. Seriously, though, I think the question to ask is what is there not to love about Doctor Martha Jones? She’s treated less-than-stellar by the Tenth Doctor, yes, but she adapts to this crazy life of time-travel so well (too well maybe), not to mention that she helps him out of the fire several times throughout her run. Have people really already forgotten the fact that Martha is the Woman Who Walked the Earth, stayed alive an entire year avoiding the Master’s efforts to capture her, and was the entire reason why the Doctor’s plan to end the Year That Never Was worked? (Also, she’s the only modern-day companion to have voluntarily left the Doctor, which I admire A LOT.)
3) Mary Watson. I seem to have a thing for the lesser-liked ladies in fandoms. Granted, I’m not normally a Johnlock shipper by any means, so I never had to feel like my favorite pairing was being threatened; but Mary was so much more than what she appeared on the surface. She’s multifaceted, she’s secretive, and I wouldn’t even necessarily label her as a Good Person-- but she is Good where it counts, she’s genuinely kind and caring to others, she tries her best to protect John and Rosie, and she and Sherlock have this amazing understanding of each other which I find absolutely brilliant.
4) Peggy Carter. Her name alone conveys how much of a BAMF Peggy is. ‘Nuff said.
(Seriously, though, I’ll have to do a full-depth analysis on Peggy at a later date, because usually all I can do when I think of her is incoherently flail, and I’ll need more than a paragraph to explain why I love her so much.)
5) Ellie Miller. I had a hard time deciding who I was going to put down on this list, Ellie or Beth Latimer. I decided on Ellie because I’ve made it no secret Beth is my absolute favorite character in Broadchurch, and I’ve talked about her a lot on previous posts. So here’s Ellie, the Detective Sergeant of Broadchurch who is the one who helped close three major cases, loves her sons more than chocolate, builds her life back up after it comes to pieces around her, and gives some truly amazing tellings-off when she needs to. And she threatens to piss in a cup and throw it at Hardy when he’s being particularly difficult, and if that isn’t legendary I don’t know what is. She’s all-around brilliant, and honestly one of the main reasons why the tv show works as well as it does.
These are just a few of my favorites, but this list is already a bit long, so part 2 is going to have to come later.
There's nothing I want to say, except that I love Martha Jones a lot.

So, I've been binging Doctor Who, starting with Series 3 (okay, a bit of a weird place to start, but this is a judgment-free zone, so shh). And I have absolutely fallen in love with the Ten/Martha/Jack trio and I just have so many feelings about these three. And there are a criminal lack of fics with the three of them in a romantic/sexual relationship. So, like you do when you don't find enough of what you want to read, I'm writing it! I have like three DW fics underway at the moment and if anyone wants to talk to me about it in the comments, or just generally chat about this trio, feel free to hit me up in the comments or direct messages! I crave interactions with other fanfic writers/Doctor Who fans!

I love that every Doctor has this a realization of “Everyone I travel with ends up hurt or traumatized and it’s all my fault and I’m sooooo selfish because I keep letting them travel with me, I’m lonely and hate traveling by my self but I have to do it anyway so I don’t hurt anymore of my companions” and the next episode/regeneration the Doctor gets a new companion.

“But We Love Martha Jones!” - The Doctor Who Fandom’s Selective Memory of Racism
Be aware that this article contains explicit examples of anti-black racism and misogynoir.
Chapter 2 - Utopia-ish
The constant nitpicking of Martha Jones for reasons white female companions could get away with was blatant anti-black racism. Let’s get that bit clear first and foremost. As a Black person in fandom, watching Black characters get torn apart while never being given the grace of their non-Black castmates is an experience that’s too common. Microaggressions are more subtle so the easiest way to shut down any mentions of racism is to accuse Black fans of making things up or telling us “Well it’s not like REAL racism”. Luckily Doctor Who Tumblr birthed the Martha Jones affirmative action and Aunt Jemima “memes” so I can cross both covert and overt racism off the list. As mentioned in extensive detail in the previous chapter, plus the various Martha Jones articles written before me, the treatment Martha experienced was racist. I don’t care if you personally didn’t like her. I don’t care that you missed Rose. I don’t care that Ten is your smol bean. Martha’s treatment was racist. Freema Agyeman’s treatment was racist. It might not have been everyone. It might not have been you personally. But it was there. The fandom can never be a safe space for POC, specifically Black people if this elephant in the room can’t be addressed over a decade after it arrived.
On paper, you’d assume Martha’s rep was good because “at least she wasn’t a Black stereotype”. Some fans praised her for having a present father, not speaking MLE and not being from the ends. This goes into respectability politics but the fandom’s weirdness about Black Brits and class is not the point of this article. The point is the revisionist history of how Martha was really treated and to do that it helps to know what Black tropes are. The Mammy trope is a Black woman whose main purpose is to serve her white counterparts and during slavery, she mainly cared for the slave owners' children. She is usually fat, dark skin and asexual, not as a representation of those things but as a statement of how if she isn’t used for sexual exploitation like the Jezebel (the promiscuous, reckless, sexualised Black woman), she has no sexual value at all. Her value is serving the needs of others only. Martha doesn’t fit this trope in theory but in practice, she fulfils the sub-categories of this trope both in show and fandom: the disposable Black (girl)friend trope. She is used as Ten’s emotional punching bag before he’s ready for Donna and then Rose again. She had to endure edgy moody S3 Ten so no one else had to. She’s the excuse people use to deflect any critical analysis of how race was handled in RTD1. She’s the fandom’s excuse to deflect from their own racial biases. Racism? No way! Everybody loves Martha Jones! What do you mean?
Some parts of the fandom have tried to mend things by suggesting Martha be paired with other doctors or romantically shipping her with other characters a bit better than Mickey Smith. But does this hold up? As much as I’m a big fan NineMartha as a concept and as someone who honestly saw one-off characters like Riley Vashtee from 42 or Tallulah from Daleks in Manhattan having way more romantic chemistry with Martha than Mickey ever did, simply re-shipping Martha isn’t enough. Doctor Who’s racism isn't exclusive to one doctor, one series or one era and new Martha pairings suggest the issue was “right person, wrong doctor” instead of what the issue actually was: racism. Moffat and Chibnall’s eras weren’t full of golden Black representation either so I doubt the Martha issue would’ve magically disappeared under those two. From Nine’s hostility to Mickey, to Twelve’s hostility to Danny Pink to Thirteen handing a South Asian Spymaster to the Nazis and Eleven only travelling with POC in comics most fans haven’t heard of and being besties with Churchill, simply putting Martha with another Doctor isn’t the serve fans think it is. Even RoseMartha seems like putting a bandaid on a bullet hole. If it's not enough for Martha to be compared to Rose, put down in favour of Rose, told she isn’t Rose and told she's worse than Rose in fandom and in show over and over and over, she has to be shipped with Rose too. Martha’s a great character… as long as you can tie her to Rose… again. Even in my own article I have to talk about Rose because Rose is centred in what was supposed to be Martha’s story. A doctor-to-be Black girl from London with a hectic family meets a Time Lord and gets abducted by space rhino police at work in one day. Her main conflict isn’t balancing work and time traveller life, or fighting to get her family back together, or seeing what’s out there in the universe - it's that she isn’t “Rose” enough. The Mammy and her sons’ main thing in common is simple; how well they serve and centre the white characters. In attempts to mend Martha’s treatment she is still only valued in relation to white characters. She should’ve been with Eleven because he would’ve fucked a Black woman. Or maybe Dilfy Twelve. Or a sapphic romance with another female companion who she saw twice or doesn’t actually know. Or maybe Ten in an alternate universe where he supports #nubianqueens. None of this is done to explore sexuality or romance with Black women and is definitely not to centre Black lesbianism and bisexuality. It’s Mammy with a dash of Jezebel. It's adding romantic and sexual value on top of physical and emotional value like a crappy meal deal.
I’m tired of Black women being treated as extensions of white women both in media and in real life. I’m tired of our value being determined by how well we serve white people emotionally, physically, platonically and sexually. And I'm even more tired of white feminism especially in this fandom. It would be so easy to label this article as anti-Rose, anti-Ten or anti-Tenrose to invalidate my whole racial analysis because it's the easy way out. I’ll admit I like both characters individually but not the ship but this isn’t something I decided on since birth - it's my conclusion as a Black fan in a predominantly white fandom, watching a predominantly white show, watching the first companion of my race be told she isn’t good enough compared to the white characters, and that the hatred of her is justified for the greater good of its popular white ship. Black fans can never have this conversation without being told we’re “pitting women against each other” and that Martha and Rose hugged once in S4 so everything's hunky dory. Martha’s happy that Ten found Rose again so what’s the problem? It sends a clear message that Black women’s pain will never matter a much as white women’s feelings. “Rose is amazing! Martha’s amazing! Stop pitting women against women!” but who was pit against who in the first place? These faux girl power posts fail to acknowledge the overlap of race and gender which separates the treatment of Black and white women. It fails to acknowledge Martha’s hate was rooted in anti-black racism. It fails to acknowledge the anti-Rose pushback was in response to how the show and fandom convinced us Rose was the untouchable bar this Black woman failed to meet. It fails to acknowledge Freema Agyeman the actress was targeted not just her character. It fails because the female empowerment rhetoric that leaves the Black ones at the bottom of the pile only “empowers” women of a certain demographic.
The harassment Martha experienced was swept under the rug of “stan wars” but it was so much deeper than that. I’m not saying Martha stans are angels but there was no “Great Stan War” because the sides were never even. At the end of the day no amount of “Martha’s better than Rose” tweets will ever compare to the fact that Martha hate was rooted in misogynoir. Rose was and still is considered the greatest companion of nuwho, whilst Martha is constantly erased and undervalued. Rose’s video views and hashtags have always been bigger than Martha’s. Amy and Clara came after Martha but still surpassed her in popularity and got plenty of fan edits of “The Girl Who Waited” and “The Impossible Girl” whilst Martha was conveniently skipped in the companion lineup. The fandom’s bias still shines clearly in favour of Rose over Martha. Rose’s jealousy towards other women is justifiable and just the ups and downs of a 19-year-old whilst Martha’s is entitled bitterness. Rose’s flaws are compelling character moments and depth, Martha’s are “holding her back from being a good companion”. Hell, even Donna calling out Ten’s BS was entertaining accountability whilst Martha was just the angry Black woman. Fans will weaponise Rose’s working-class roots to imply a pro-Martha bias, failing to acknowledge the working-class to poor background of the average Black Brit, the anti-blackness middle-class Black people are not spared from, the many working-class Black characters of the show like Mickey, Bill, Rigsy and Ryan or how most fans don’t consider Martha middle class because she doesn’t fit the white British cultural stereotypes. You can't be the most loved and hated at the same time. The hard truth is Billie Piper wasn’t racially abused by Martha stans but Freema was absolutely racially abused by Rose’s and the effects of this are still around. Go into Martha Jones tags today and you’ll see snarky posts of how Ten could never love another companion like Rose. Even when Freema bravely shared her experiences of literal racism, fans were quick to yell “But I wanted Ten and Rose though” as a justification for years of misogynoir. Again, we need to address the elephant in the room instead of covering our eyes and ears to act like it’s not there. A Black character and actress was collateral damage in order for a popular white ship to rise and whilst I’m not an anti, I as a Black Doctor Who fan, I’ll never be a supporter. At the end of the day, only one of these actresses is still carrying the burden of misogynoir over 10 years since RTD1 ended. A lonely walk across the Earth yet again.

A/n - Gender Neutral Reader. Requested by this lovely anon. I hope that you like this. I don’t know how well I wrote Martha, so I’m sorry if she is out of character. But I just thought that this was cute.

Everything felt wrong. You couldn’t find the right words to describe how you felt, but things did not feel right. Your nose was running, your throat was sore, your head felt heavy, and your chest felt tight. Sometimes, intense pain would rush through your skull, so intense that it would make you feel like crying. You desperately wanted to get up and grab a glass of water from your personal kitchen in The TARDIS, but you were suddenly overcome with chills and all you could do was bundle yourself in your blankets.
There was a soft knock on your bedroom door, but you elected to ignore it. You chose to cocoon into your blanket nest even more as another wave of chills overcame you. If it was The Doctor at your door, then he could just go on an adventure with Martha, instead. He didn’t need you, definitely not today. The person on the other side of your door knocked again, and again you ignored it. A couple of moments after you refused to respond, The TARDIS opened the door for whoever was behind it.
“Y/n? The Doctor has this grand idea to - Y/n, are you alright?” Martha entered your room quickly, excitedly rambling about what The Doctor had planned, but when she saw you huddled on your bed, she forgot whatever thought she was so excited to tell you about. Martha rushed over to you and kneeled beside your bed to try to look at your face. Seeing you like this, instantly she was worried for you.
“Martha, I’m fine. Just a bit tired.” You removed yourself from your cocoon and sat up in bed, trying to appear normal and healthy.
“What does The Doctor have planned for today?” You asked with a strained voice. Martha looked at you incredulously. She saw how bloodshot your eyes were and noticed the stuffiness of your breathing.
“Are you sure that you are all right? Because if you aren’t -” You cut off the woman you had been harbouring a crush on and finally moved from your bed.
“Martha, I’m fine. Trust me.” You tried to stand up straight and pull a dramatic pose as if to prove our point, but then your head felt light and fuzzy. You ended up leaning to the side and then stumbled backwards a bit as if to try and catch yourself. Your healthy facade was already thoroughly broken, but then a coughing fit hit you and you had to sit down back down on your bed.
“Alright now, lie back down.” Martha directed you sternly.
“Am I going to be alright?” You muttered, fully accepting defeat and just letting Martha know that you weren’t feeling well.
“Of course you will be. I know what I’m doing.”
“What if it’s some weird space illness? Should we get The Doctor? Am I going to die?” Martha quickly placed her hand over your mouth, which was covered by a couple of layers of tissues, to silence your rambling outburst of questions.
“You are showing signs of the simple Earthly flu. No space illness. We don’t need The Doctor. I have got everything covered. You are going to be perfectly fine in my care, Y/n.” Martha threw the tissues into your small garbage bin by your bed and then stood to retrieve the medical kit that was automatically housed in every bedroom in The TARDIS. She returned to your side quickly and went through all of the procedures her medical teachers told her to complete. She took your temperature and checked your blood pressure and heart rate. Once confirming everything she needed to know, Martha gave you some medicine to start you on the recovery process but continued a bit more testing. She wanted to be extra conscious intending to you. Martha had grown quite fond of you over your time together on the alien ship with The Doctor.
“You have a nicer bedside manner than I thought you would.” You said after finishing the artificial-looking red medicine.
“What is that supposed to mean?” Martha’s doctor persona quickly broke upon hearing your comment.
“You can be quite harsh to The Doctor and villains on adventures. But it's okay, I like when you get a bit harsh.”
“Oh really now?” Martha quirked a smile.
“Don’t hold that against me. I’m sick remember? You better not be going around telling anyone who will listen about how sick me confessed that I enjoy a little harshness.”
“I won’t tell a soul.” Martha smiled genuinely before quietly finishing checking you over and then she gave you any extra things that you might need in order to get better, with some help from The TARDIS, of course.
“Can you stay with me?” You asked Martha as she began to walk out of your room.
“That breaches so many appropriate doctor/patient relations.” Martha joked.
“Just forget about being Doctor Jones for a moment and just be Martha and cuddle me.”
“I don’t know.” Martha mumbled. She read the labels on the medicines she gave you and confusion was labelled as a possible side effect. She didn’t want to make you feel awkward or uncomfortable while you were vulnerable, let alone ever. The TARDIS, though, telepathically reassured Martha and told her that you were of sound mind. Probably a bit more honest than usual because of your sickness.
“Please.” You begged. You could see Martha’s resolve breaking before you.
“Ugh, why must you be so convincing?!” Martha walked around to the other side of your bed, so you could remain close to all the medicines and tissues on your bedside table. You watched as Martha climbed in beside you.
“Turn over.” Martha placed her hands on your sides and helped you adjust to where you were lying on your side facing the bedside table. Then you felt Martha settle beside you until she was cuddling you from behind.
“So you are a big spoon, Doctor Jones?”
“I’m off duty, remember, just Martha. But I don’t want to get sick, so I’m not going to face you.”
“Aww, come on! Really?” You jokingly whined. You understood Martha’s position completely. You were surprised that she actually agreed to stay with you, but you were overjoyed to not be alone while you were not feeling well.
“Maybe some other time.”
“I’m going to hold you to that promise, Martha. I expect an extravagant cuddle date once I’m feeling better.”
“Anything for you, sicky.” You huffed at the nickname, but Martha laughed into your back and that instantly made you feel better. If you felt less sick and tired at that moment, you would have said that Martha’s laugh was the best medicine in the universe, but that would have to wait for when you awoke later.
You fell asleep in Martha’s arms, completely comfortable despite your sickness. With Martha holding you closely you knew that you could get through this.

Tea. (Headcanons)
(A/N These are some of my headcannons told sort of in the form of a plotless oneshot. Add to it if you want!)
There's one thing the Doctor adores no matter what regeneration he's on, and that's tea. Whether it's good ol' classic English tea (Ten drank it all the time), or green tea (Good old Twelve), or herbal teas(Eleven was wont to try all kinds of teas, a new one every day), or gunpowder tea (Nine had a bit of a bitter streak when it came to this), he always loved it, and he liked to share that with his companions.
Everyone liked the classic stuff, but each had their own favorites.
Rose, through her time on the TARDIS, came to really enjoy raspberry tea with honey and lemon juice, which the Doctor would make for her after every adventure. She brought her favorite brand to her mum's apartment, but Jackie said she "didn't trust these ruddy alien teas. What if they poison me or somethin'?"
Martha had a soft spot for orange tea, especially with lavender or jasmine, and her favorite brand was one from the 25th century on Earth that boasted helpful hypermetabolic antioxidants, though the Doctor protested it didn't help her health at all. She liked it anyway. They "debated" the point thousands of times during their long tea-and-chat sessions in the console room.
Donna was quite fond of coffee as well as tea, and took it black, occasionally with sugar if she was just relaxing and chatting with the Doctor. She made him try her coffee once, but he spit it out so violently she called him "Old Faithful" for a week straight. After that, the Doctor insisted on making and drinking only his own beverages, and Donna cracked a smile every time they met in the morning for drinks and biscuits.
Amy liked really strong teas of lots of varieties, including some alien types found across the galaxy from Earth in the 47th century, while Rory just liked his classic tea, one spoon of sugar and a little milk, please. Neither liked when the Doctor attempted to make their tea, so Amy often ended up getting annoyed at them both and sitting them down while she did it, correctly. The boys were smart enough not to argue.
Clara really rather enjoyed oolong and green tea, but would try basically anything the Doctor brewed for her, so they spent hours in the TARDIS kitchen laughing and taste-testing.
The Doctor also let everyone pick their own mug, because of course the TARDIS had an almost endless supply of them, and he gave each of them the mugs when they left him.
His were: in his ninth incarnation, a simple black mug with a swirling blue and gold design; in his tenth incarnation, a rather large blue mug with about a thousand quotes in brown ink scrawled all over it (from him, and his companions, and Shakespeare, and Agatha Christie, and a thousand others) in very small, cramped handwriting (he had about three because he kept running out of space); in his eleventh incarnation, it changed every time he drank tea, sometimes white with a red bow tie, other times pale pink with a black fez silhouette, other times something completely random; and in his twelfth incarnation, a star scattered black mug with the TARDIS' outline.
Rose's favorite was a pink mug with a half-heart shaped handle, which the Doctor bought her "as a joke", and sometimes teased her about, but she was happy with it. Tentoo had it in his pocket when they went to Pete's world, and gave it back to her as a birthday present the next time it came around. She was thrilled.
Martha's was a pretty green Japanese tea cup, with Kanji lettering on the side for "Health". It was wrapped up in the gift pile at her wedding to Mickey. There was no giver name. She cried when she opened it.
Mickey got one that said "The Most Brilliant Idiot To Every Live" in small, cramped handwriting. He cried, too.
Donna would never understand where the fairly plain brown mug that read "Life's an adventure if you get your arse out of bed long enough to have one" came from. All she knew was that it arrived at her door one day, and Shawn didn't know where it came from, and it was her favorite. It made her happy, but she never understood why.
Amy's favorite mug was intricately sculpted to a tree with a fairy sitting in its branches that Rory bough for her on a planet with actual, live fairies. Rory's was one Amy had given him, with a little cartoon of a Roman soldier, bought from the gift shop of a certain museum, that had the title "The Centurion".
They cried when a package containing the mugs arrived on their doorstep in the 60s.
Clara's favorite was bright red with gold glitter and the outline of a leaf on it. The Doctor swore he'd just picked it up somewhere, but Clara just smiled and nodded, happily running a finger over the hand-painted leaf.
