--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The swim back to the reef was a painful one. Jason was mostly fine. He had obviously been protected by his dad. Bur Bruce was bruised and cut up, cuts all around his torso and tail. And Clark hated it. Once they were in slightly familiar territory, Clark set Bruce down on a sand bed. Jason chirped slightly, narrowing his eyes and looking at Clark as he was set down as well.

“It’s ok buddy,” Clark muttered, taking in the extent of Bruce’s wounds. “I’m just getting something to wrap him.”

Bruce had passed out a while ago, weather from exhaustion or pain Clark wasn’t sure. He was just happy that Bruce had felt safe enough to let his guard down around him. And he had said Clark’s name! his heart was still buzzing from that.

Jason nuzzled his fathers limp hand, lightly biting it as if trying to wake Bruce up.

Clark tutted and pulled Jason off Bruce’s hand, Jason histed and bit Clarks instead.

“Uh- buddy not the best idea, can we just focus on your dad instead of attacking me? Please. Please don’t bite me.” Clark said, holding the pup at arm’s length.

Jason seemed to understand the word dad, but not much else. He did stop, but kept his glare as he looked at Clark, then looked pointedly at Bruce. Communicating something along the lines of ‘fix him’.

Clark chuckled nervously at the pup’s command, letting him go and watching as Jason simply let himself sink to the sand so he could lay his chin on his dad’s tail, whining softly. Clark winced at the sight, sighing.

“Ok,” he muttered, nodding at Jason. “You can stay on my back while I fix your father, just don’t bite me.”

Jason obviously didn’t need to be told twice, backpacking himself on Clarks back and wrapping his tail around Clark’s stomach to secure himself. It was a bit tricker to work while he had a pup on his back, but cark managed to mauver himself and keep working. He had found seaweed and sponge and was placing the sponge over the more serious cuts before wrapping the seaweed around them in a makeshift bandage. It wasn’t the best job, but it would deter anything from getting worse.

He lifted Bruce into his arms and started on his way back to the league, noticing as Jason started to drift off on his shoulder, almost falling. Clark wrapped a piece of seaweed around his own chest, then over Jason’s back to swaddle him against his back so the pup could fall asleep. Jason tried to be upset about it, but he really couldn’t as he felt himself be pulled under by the inane urge of sleep.

With a pup drifting against his shoulder and a fully grown Mer against his chest, Clark carefully entered the league hall.

He entered to find Dick in a heated debate with Hal, arguing over something or another while Dick was holding the sleeping Damian, and Tim was hiding under the table examining everyone.

“Clark!” Hal said when he got back in, stalking over and staring Clark down. Dick was offended he was left hanging but instead collected Tim from where he was doing his examinations as he swam behind Clark, sticking his lounge out.

“What the fuck was that?” Hal gritted his teeth, “you left us babysitting children! Random child-“

“Hal, if you want to keep your Tonge you won’t swear in front of my kids.” Clark said sternly, moving an arm to hold Dicks hand.

The league was basically shocked it see Clark actually with kids, and-

“Is that the anomaly  we kept getting reports about?” Arthur asked, eyes narrowing. Clark wasn’t honestly phased, instead staring word and not dropping his gaze.

“He is not it. This is Bruce. If anyone has any questions, don’t ask them. I don’t care.”

With that Clark knelt down to Dicks level, who was holding a sleepy Damian and a Tim who was clinging to his arm. Clark smiled.

“Hey, we can go back to my place, ok? Well leave these four there and then you can take me to the other kids, and they can stay with me, at least until your dads ok. Dose that sound good?” Clark asked.

Dick nodded, shooting a glare at Hal and following Clark. Tim didn’t get the memo and swam up to Hal, blinking. Hal picked him up by his arm and stared at the child, Tim grabbed his hair and took some for himself, blinking at Hal as he held the small bit of hair. Hal dropped Tim, who stayed on the bottom as he stared.

“Tim!” Dick called, looking at his brother. “You don’t need more bits for your collection, hurry up!”

Hal was very disturbed when the small pup swam away, keeping his eyes on Hal as Dick grabbed his hand and pulled him along. It wasn’t a long swim back to Clark’s place, Dick woke up Jason softly and handed Damian to him, before setting Tim down on a coral bed and tugging on Clark’s hand.

“C’mon.” He mumbled, pulling on it. “we’ve got to go get the others, then I can relax.”

“Ok, ok. Let’s go.” Clark said softly, following the kid out of the room. Dick did need guiding back to the reef, but once Dick realised where he was, he shot off in one direction. It wasn’t a speed Clark couldn’t easily match, but he did wonder why the pup was so desperate to get back.

Clark’s eyes did widen when Dick went from reef, to deeper. And deeper. Clark was sort of scared they’d come across the trench monsters, but when he went to tell Dick to go up Dick didn’t listen to him, instead going deeper.

Eventually just above a nest of trench creatures, Dick swerved and went into a cave, Clark soon to follow. Dick paused for a minute before he clicked a few times. Dick saw a few flashes and took that as reason to continue, going further into the cave. Clark followed him, eyes shifting around till he saw three more kids. One of them the same Mer type as Bruce, which was cool.

Cassandra was holding a sleeping duke as Stephine was already swimming around Clark curiously. Cassandra flashed a question to Dick, and he nodded.

“This is dads’ boyfriend.” Dick whisper. “Has letting us stay at his place, c’mon.”

Clark was about to protest about the  boyfriend part, well they weren’t together yet, but he got handed a sleeping duke by Cass and had to follow the small part of the brood as they swam passed him, Dick tugging Clark along again.

Clark followed the kids, still off guard by the face they were so deep into the water, but he felt himself able to breath easy again when they got higher.

He looked to the sleeping pup in his arms to the other ones following him, conversing in hushed whispers.  He would’ve laughed in most situations, but he was a little annoyed at the fact that they weren’t explaining the location in the slightest. But either way, that doesn’t really matter right now.

When he got back to the apartment, he ushered the kids into the room his bed was in, where the others were. They honestly just moved into a kind of pile, going to sleep like that. Clarks former irritation was forgotten in the presence of seeing a bunch of cute kids. He hummed, a smile onto his face as he slipped out of the room.

Swimming out,  back to the couch where he had left Bruce, he saw the other sitting up and slowly peeling the seaweed of his tail with an annoyed expression.

“Oh- hey you need that to be safe.” Clark said, swimming over and grabbing Bruce’s hands in one of his, softly re-wrapping the seaweed. He looked up at the other with a smile and sat next to him when he was done.

Bruce looked at him, before just nodding and- and actually leaning on his shoulder. Clark wasn’t able to pinpoint his heart stopped, but it had, and as he wrapped his arms around the other shoulders and leaned his head on top of Bruce, he knew this was where he was going to stay.

Haters be dammed.

(WHOO! Another chapter done, a big one this time! Anyway, I think this one might be one of the last, but don’t worry! I mean the last for this story. Not this au. If anyone who can and wants to draw enjoys this, and actually dose something for it, please send it in asks! Id love to see any creative works honestly. Even head cannons you have ideas on as well; I’ll try work it into the story if I like it! Anyway, thanks for reading, if you want to be added to tag list just ask and have an amazing day!)

(Oh! And if you have ideas for this au but the next story after this, please send it in comments! Id love to see what you guys want after this one. And if you have other Au ideas, send that in asks! Like I’m also writing a SuperBat fic with Bruce in limbo. If anyone wants that ill, make a pinned post and post both stories. Anyway, sorry for rambling, enjoy!)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Clark expected a normal day when he woke up. Maybe go to see Bruce, maybe not. He wasn’t really sure what the day was bringing. Until dick slammed open the door of the justice League meeting room with two pups in tow, looking for Clark and ignoring the protests of who was supposed to be on guard duty that day.

“Clark! I need your help!” dick practically shouted, ducking under the guards grabbing hands once more and pulled the other two to Clark’s seat, ducking behind it defensively from the guard.

Diana waved the guard off before staring at Clark, with a look that clearly said he had some explaining to do. Dick was still panting and halfway to tears and Clark, actually decided to ignore Diana. This was so much more important.

“What’s happened?” Clark asked, crouching down and taking dicks hand in his own. “Where’s your dad?”

“I don’t know!” dick sobbed, rubbing his eyes and staring at Clark. “We were playing in the shallows, and I know dad said don’t go there alone, but he found us, right? But- but then there were boats- and Jason was a bit too far away from us so he was in prime spot for when they could get him- and dad went to save Jason, but they got him two- and now I have Tim and Damian, I didn’t know who else to go to! And now there on a boat, and-“

Clark shushed him, putting his hand on the back of dicks neck comfortingly and trying not to panic internally. It was a bit scrambled what dick said, but what the gist of it was, was that Jason was taken by humans, and trying to save him Bruce was Aswell. Which was not good in any way.

“Clark? What’s going-“ Diana started but was cut off from an actual glare from the other.

“I have to go.” Clark said, standing.

“Clark no,” Aurthur started. Whatever’s happening it can wait; we’ve got a meeting-“

“With all due respect Aurthur, I couldn’t care less. Now, you listen to me. This is Dick, Tim, and Damian. These are my children. You will all take care of them no questions asked. You don’t get to know what I’m doing, but that’s more important. Mt family will always be more important. So shut up, take care of my kids, and ill be back when I’m back. Ok?”

No one spoke. Clark had never been so firm. Or terrifying. No one knew what exactly to say. When Clark saw he was acknowledged he kneeled back down to dick.

“These people you can trust, ok? I’m going to get your dad and brother. Stay together, you’re such a brave kid, ok? You always come to me. Ill be back in no-“

“I think I like being your kid Clark.”

At dicks words Clark wanted to melt into a pile of mush and happiness. But he didn’t have time, so he pressed a soft kiss onto dicks forehead. “I like being your dad.” He muttered before nodding and speeding out of the league building, leaving the others a batch of overwhelmed, and very stubborn kids.

Clark swam through the water like a bat out of hell, desperately weaving through as he searched for any sign of human activity, ears straining to hear anything at all. He went up to the shallows before examining the area thoroughly before finding some shrapnel, seems Bruce put up a strong fight. Good man. And he pulled it closer to himself. He couldn’t read the language, but it was some Asian language, which meant they were going back into the ocean to get back to their home.

Which meant he still had time to find Bruce.

He ignored the cold that seemed into his bones as he left the reef, and the twilight zone. Swimming further into the ocean then he’s ever swum as he went to go fins his Bruce and Jason. Part of his family. He couldn’t just leave them behind. This time? There was no room for error allowed.

Clark was starting to panic when he got a whiff of something in the water. Blood, Bruces blood. He could track it to the boat! But… Bruce was bleeding. Oh, hell no, people gonna die.

Tracking the blood with a burning rage in the back of his skull wasn’t the easiest thing he’s done. But definitely the thing he hasn’t regretted even once, as he continued till, he saw a ship in which the scent was just dripping off it.

Now, Clark could’ve been subtle about this. But he honestly didn’t care and was far too angry to consider anything but getting the two back. So, it came as a big surprise when he climbed up the side of the boat and just threw a guy off. The humans seemed almost intimidated of Clark’s size, and that made him so much angrier.

They didn’t mind kidnapping a pup and its parent huh? But when they have to take on a bigger Mer they minded? What a load of absolute bullshit.

Clark narrowed his eyes at one of the poachers and fixed him with a gaze that could melt steel. Literally. The man seemed to get what the other was after, because he pointed to a crate before jumping onto a raft like the other two men left. Cowards. Not that Clark was thinking of that now, as he instead went closer to the crate and open it up to fins a whimpering up clutching to an unconscious Bruce with blood dripping down his forehead. And Clarks heart nearly stopped.

Now, he knew Bruce was alive, he could hear his pulse. But that didn’t stop the fact that he was hurt. He clutched Jason to his side and pulled Bruce out of the crate, then falling backwards into the ocean to get the two some much needed water.

Since Jason seemed contented with clutching onto him like a backpack Clark focused on Bruce, checking the other man and making sure he was alright. About halfway through Bruce stirred, head pounding and pain shooting through his body as he stared up at Clark.

The two met eyes and Bruce tilted his head, “cl... ark?” he tried. Clark had never heard Bruce even try speaking before, so hearing his name, even fragmented and a bit strange was surreal, and damn he had a beautiful voice. Jason seemed to have not heard his father’s voice either because he chirped, swimming around and slotting himself into Bruce arms.

Bruce loosely wrapped sore arms around Jason, pulling himself up despite the discomfort to lean on Clark’s chest.

Clark pulled the other closer, starting on his way home as he mumbled reassurance.

“It’s ok, your other kids are safe and with my friends. They won’t let anything happen to them. Just stay with me, I’ll take you home.”

(Hello friends! Here’s another chapter, quite a long one this time! 1300 words, woof. Anyway, you wanna be tagged please let me know. Previous chapters are at the start and please leave a comment, it means so much to me. Thank you and I hope you enjoy!)

Hal: Gobiodon histrio.

(it’s a fish that can be multiple colours. If you want to find the one, I see google it with the term green behind it, and it has orange stipes. I’m honestly not fussed, whoever wants to decide Hal’s stripe colour just put it in the comments, first one wins. Unless it’s a joke one. I don’t want to wreck the vision for others just because he first comment is a joke. Either way, I like this foosh.)

Jason: Maroon Clownfish

(I think this one’s really pretty and would accurately show how Jason was before he died. This is before he died in my au, so yes. And the reason I’m adding a pic for Jason is because there is a normal type, but this one looks so cool, and Jason deserves the best. Idk if he’s going to be in this chapter, but when I reference this fish, it’s not the one you google, it’s this one. I read an article on it; it is the same species but mutated to look amazingly cool. if you cant tell, i like fish.)

Mer JL Au:

Hullo, it’s me again! Here with a part four. Please read, enjoy, let me know if you need me to do anything, have fun, enjoy!

Every part I think I’m just going to try to add two more species of Mer, like I did in the first part. The first part will be linked under the people who asked to be tagged if you want to be tagged PM me.

----------------------------------------------------------

Clark was happy for days after that interaction. The league was confused about why he was so happy, but every time they brought it up, he just brushed it off, saying he was just in a good mood. He hadn’t seen Bruce since then, but he didn’t feel the need to worry about it anymore. He had gained at least a little trust. I mean, Bruce had let Clark talk to his pup. Progress!

Meanwhile Arthur was getting increasingly frustrated with this recent disaster. The trench. There had been spotting of trench monsters outside the trench much more frequent than normal, and it was getting disruptive. He was starting to think something was scaring them off. He turned to Clark to get his opinion but saw the other smiling at his JL pad again.

“Clark.” He tried, attempting to coax the other into helping him, it was almost as if Clark didn’t hear him as he just continued to look at his pad. “uh- excuse me Kent. Am I interrupting something?” he tried again, making a face.

Clark looked up, surprised for a second before clearing his throat. “apologies Arthur, uh, no, you’re not interrupting. Please, continue.”

Clark reluctantly put his pad down as he looked up to listen to the other drone on. Every time Clark glanced at his pad, he swore he was being watched, but when Hal and Barry were giggling to each other about something stupid at the other end of the hall, no one batted an eye.

His eyes met Dianas, and she smiled at him sympathetically, also a bit bored of the meeting. Nothing much had happened in a bit, and when Clark was allowed to leave, he practically jumped for joy. Well, I swam up for joy. (lmao puns). He had heard of a spotting of a black finned creature who was with a small Mer pup, and apparently another, smaller one. So, Clark knew Bruce was around and decided to go see him. That was his friend, the black scaled creature, not some dangerous one. Just Bruce.

When Clark got to the reef he swam around, dipping in and out of coral places. It took a while, but he saw Bruce sitting under a rather large piece, with dick swimming g around but close to him, staring at some vibrant fish. While a smaller, red-tailed Mer, clung to Bruce’s arm. Dick was 12, but this pup looked about 10. He had one arm wrapped around Bruce, and the other playing in the sand with a shell. Bruce watched his kids play, sighing as he tilted his head back.

When he met Clarks, for the first time he didn’t seem outright hostile. He just nodded tiredly and gestured Clark over. Clark happily swam to the other, before slowing down when he was in the closer vicinity. He was surprised when Bruce didn’t glare at him to go further away but just looked at him tiredly. When dick saw Clark, he grinned and swam over happily, plopping himself in front of the older mer. “hey Clark!” dick said, smiling. “My dads tired, you think you can help him. He says he doesn’t need any, but he’s lying. There are too many kids for him to handle- “

Dick, like nay child his age, just talked and didn’t really think about the consequence of his words. Clark chuckled, gaze shifting to a red-faced flustered Bruce, who gave his oldest son a look before flashing a reprimand about telling personal things. Dick stuck his tongue out at his dad. “but you need help! You even brought Jason here so Clark could take care of him while you rested.” He pouted. Bruce put his face in his hands.

“Jason huh?” Clark asked, looking at the pup. Who promptly shifted himself, so he was hidden behind his dad, poking his head out at Clark, who smiled at him. “wait- there are more of you?”

“Mhm.” Dick affirmed, “there’s me, Jason, Tim, Damian, Steph, Cass and duke. But at home. Dad finally got them to go to sleep. So, he’s here with me and jay.”

“Oh god that’s a lot of kids,” Clark muttered. He lowered his voice so Bruce, who was making sure Jason was ok, wouldn’t hear. “dose your dad has a partner?”

Dick grinned like he’d been waiting for that, shaking his head. “nope! Were all adopted. And I think he likes you.” Dick whisperer the last part.

Clark breathed a sigh of relief, glancing at Bruce before returning with his next question.

“How old are you all?”

“I’m 12, Jason’s 10, Steph Tim and Cass are 9, duke is seven and Damian is 2.” Disk stated, counting them off on his fingers best he could. Sensing Clarks next question, he added. “he found us all in need of a family and took us in. and he left the others at home because its dangerous out here and he needed a break. There fine though, there being looked after by a shark called Titus. And don’t worry about that, he’s friendly.”

Clark was going to ask but decided against it. instead deciding to continue to talk with dick and hang out with Bruce. Dick wasn’t joking about Bruce being tired, as he fell asleep mid conversation. Jason was concerned for his dad before dick stepped in and introduced him and Clark. Jason was wary, but eventually warmed up a little, holding Clark’s hand instead while he played in the sand. Bruce’s unconscious body lay on Clark’s shoulder as dick played trapping fish and Jason dug in the sand.

Clark stayed till late into the night, when Bruce woke up, got extremely flustered and then had to rush home to take care of his kids. He did flash at Clark though. Dick said he was thanking him. And Clark smiled to himself as they left. Jason even gave him the shell he was playing with. Clark loved this.

Barry: Indo-Pacific Sailfish.

(These baby boys are the speedsters of the ocean, and their really cute. I love them, I love him, it works. I’m a big fish person if you can’t tell. And the retractable fin can be purple or blue, and its interchanges with the weather for him. Fast as flip boi.)

Dick/Richard: Four-Winged Flying Fish.

(I know everyone says he’s a flying fish, and I agree! But I’d prefer if people started naming which one. i know there’s at least six different types of flying fish, and I’d like that acknowledged. Anyway, I think the four wing suits him best. Their more powerful and look much cooler. Thanks for coming to my ted talk.)

Hi! Author’s note, thank you for all your support for the first part and second part of my story! I’m really glad you all are enjoying and apologise for the late chapter, I’ve just been de-motivated and tired. But I hope you enjoy either way! Please LMK any ideas, enjoy part three!

----------------------------------------------------------

The meeting, in fact, was a fluke. It was called automatically when one of the members got hurt and it sent out an alert which called the meeting. Barry didn’t get hurt per se. he just decided it’d be a fun idea to try out-swim a boat and crashed into it. So, the alarm went off because he got a blood nose. Clark was upset but decided to just continue on with his day.

He went back to the reef daily to look for Bruce. He honestly missed the other, they never really spoke, but he felt listened to when they were together. Well, he liked to think he was listened to. He had spent the morning in his apartment writing a report. It wasn’t the most fun, but by the time lunch rolled around he was definitely ready for a break.

He heads off on his way to the reef again, holding his pad and trying to memorize the flash pattern he figured out last time from Bruce. When he got there, he weaved in and out of coral, taking note of the damage, it had sustained. “not good,” Clark mumbled, running his fingers over a part that had a particularly nasty gash in it. He winced.

Clark saw a flash of black and turned with a grin. Seems Bruce had been looking for him too. Bruce sat perched on a piece of coral, looking down his nose at Clark intimidatingly, as if still trying to show Clark they weren’t buddy-buddy. Clark thought Bruce was being funny, a little bit dramatic. Until he saw a flash of silver behind the other. Peaking over Bruce’s shoulder was a Mer-pup, no older than 12, starring at Clark. He clearly wasn’t the same species of Bruce, not even close to it.

Dick was a four-winged flying fish Mer, silvery blue in colour and absolutely stunning. He had short, thick and plentiful black hair like a dark crown contrasting with his tan skin. He had a freckle under his eye, and when he made eye contact with Clark he waved slightly, wings twitching absentmindedly.

Clark waved back, staring at the pup. He was surprised Bruce had a pup, let alone one that seemed too attached to him. He was about to speak but heard a quiet. “hello.” From Dick. Clark didn’t know he could talk. “Uh- hi? What’s your name? kid?” he asked, about to swim closer, Bruce coiled himself. He was normally ok with Clark, but this was the first time Bruce brought his pup to meet him. He was a bit more hostile than usual.

Dick frowned and nuzzled under Bruce’s chin till he calmed down, before responding. “I’m Richard. But everyone calls me Dick.” He said, grabbing Bruces hand.

“My dad told me you’ve been meeting with him?” Dick asked, curious.

“Yeah,” Clark said feeling slightly confused, but mostly intrigued. “You can communicate with him? How?”

“Flashes,” Dick said, pointing at Bruces tail. As id sensing it, Bruce twitched his tail, flicking Dicks finger while Dick chuckled.

“I had to learn to decipher them quick, you know? He did take me in.”

Clark’s expression softened at Dicks words, eyes flicking to Bruce, who looked at Clark as if daring him to hurt his baby. “So, he isn’t your biological dad?”

Dick held back a laugh at that, staring at Clark. “Were two different species completely? That’s ridiculous. He took me in when my parents passed. Even if he doesn’t speak English, he understands it. He’s a good dad. For the most part.”

Clark smiled. It was cute, seeing the small bright pup talking to his dad. Who was currently eyeing Clark like if he fucked up his guts would decorate the ocean floor. Clark knew he was being tested. And he was not going to lose this time. Not now, not ever.

“You hungry, kid?” he asked with a smile. “oh, yeah! Dad said the fish here are good. And that he doesn’t have to catch them because you do- “

Bruce covered dicks face with his tail, a small flush dusting his cheeks.

“ - . ~  - - -  /  -.. ~ ..  ~ -.-. ~  -.-“

Bruce flashed, giving the pup a look, as he made an embarrassed face. Dick huffed and stuck his tongue out, but Clark got the idea and went to go grab some fish.

Clark knew the other adult was embarrassed, but he couldn’t help but smile to himself as he hunted. He was slowly building trust with the other. He knew Bruce talked- well communicated with his kid about him when they were home. He knew Bruce had a kid now. Hell, since dick spoke English maybe he could get dick to write what the flashes were- or even just the key so he could learn to talk with Bruce on his own.

When Clark got back, he gave dick a fish and Bruce the rest. Bruce, as per normal, ate in regal silence. Simply enjoying his meal. He reluctantly let Clark sit next to his Pup, eyeing the two frequently as they spoke. But Bruce knew his pup needed someone to talk to. Especially if he couldn’t offer that part to him. So he let the two talk.

Meanwhile Dick and Clark were working. Clark had handed Dick his JL pad. Probably against the protocol, he knew it. But he took it to the personal notes side. Dick had walked him through what the flashes meant, helping write down some of the basic words then a key for an alphabet. Dots were short and sharp flashes, lines were flashes that lasted a second, after each letter the light would flicker, and after a word the flashing would stop for three full seconds.

It was incredibly helpful to Clark.

Dick did enjoy his fish, not as much as his dad but he had a thought that his dad came here mostly to look at the other, bright mer. The fact that his father was an excellent hunter was not lost on him.

When it got dark dick said his goodbyes, smiling at Clark and tagging along with his father as they swam off. Clark was about to turn and leave when he caught Bruce’s eye. Bruce had looked over his shoulder to Clark, and Clark felt the air knocked out of him when before Bruce disappeared with his pup into the dark, he smiled at Clark softly.

And gave him a little wave.

chapter four: Clark finds the family. Bruce needs a nap.

Enjoy the story!

“He isn’t happy with you. You missed the whole meeting.” Diana sighed, “we were discussing the trenches situation, the trench creatures are starting to come higher then normal. He’s still pissed you missed it though. What were you even doing?”

Clark looked over at Diana, crossing his arms with a huff looking to the reefs surface.

“I told you. I went to find the Mer who we’ve been getting reports about, and he slipped away. Before I even got there, and its dose take time to scout the whole area you know?”

Diana looked at him, eyes narrowing as she stopped in her tracks, sitting on a piece of coral glaring at him accusingly. Clark shifted his eyes, now slightly wringing his hands as he met the others glare.

“Uh, Diana- “

“How do you know it’s a Mer? How do you know it’s a guy Mer? You said it had slipped away before you got there.”

Clark cursed internally, eyes widening a fraction and lips slightly pursing before he schooled his expression and tried to produce a lie on the spot.

“Just an assumption on the gender, and I guessed it was a Mer because I found a shark carcass. It didn’t just leave teeth marks, it left claw marks, but only in places where it would matter. I really shouldn’t bring my assumptions into a serious conversation, thank you for catching me on that.”

He said, trying to derail her with the thanks instead of her analysing the fact that none of that information on his assumption was on his mission report.

“Huh,” Dianna said. Clark answered that too fast, there was too much reasoning with that. If he had just told her, it was an assumption, she would’ve understood and let it go. But he kept rambling about it, that was quite suspicious. Her eyes flicked to the faint scratches on his arms he had attempted to hide wrapping his arm up in seaweed.

‘Idiot probably lost,’ she mused in her head. ‘Embarrassed he went alone no doubt, and lying to cover up he couldn’t manage it alone. No point in embarrassing him, but this is vital information…’

“Anyway,” she started again, giving him a smile as she started swimming again, Clark visibly relaxed as he followed.

“You should add all that to your mission report.”

Clark looked at her, confused. Before nervously chuckling with a sheepish look. “But, Diana, it’s just an assumption. I don’t want to be wrong- “

Diana gave him a sharp look. She cared about him, but the lie was disrespect she wouldn’t take.

“I trust your judgement, Clark.” She said, voice steadily firm. “Write it, you’ve never been wrong about an assumption before.”

She was giving him a clear disapproving parent stare, one that made him adjust the seaweed covering his arms as he tried to give a normal grin.

“Thanks Di, your too good to me.”

“I know.”

The rest of the swim back was relatively normal after the tension dissipated. Clark was glad, thinking he got away with it. Meanwhile, Diana was concerned. Considering her assumption on why Clark lied, she started to worry that if Clark was this embarrassed, or worried, to talk about the black scaled creature, it must be terrifying. But she wasn’t going to bring it up. Yet. Not unless it becomes a serious concern.

She dropped Clark off at home, who swum inside his apartment and sighed as he flopped down on his couch. (slab of stone and coral). He looked to the ceiling, wondering. Wondering if he’d see Bruce again. And he did, next time he was at the reef.

after a few days Clark was assigned to reef patrol again, not before getting vigorously scolded by Arthur, as Hal filmed it, and barry watched. He was picking at the coral as he swum by, not noticing the pair of blue eyes stare at him from under a piece of coral. Nor the black scaled figure following him as he went, keeping to the shadows.

Clark did however see when Bruce flashed his scales at him, in the pattern of:

“ . _ . . ~ _ _ _ ~ _ _ _ ~ _ . _ “. (Ignore the strange swirly dash, its hard trying to write morse code D:)

Clark tilted his head but swam over to him, quite happy to see the other again. He was made to keep his distance with a defensive flash, but it was slightly closer than last time. So, Clark counted that as a win.

“Well, hi! Glad to see your back Bruce.” Clark said, offering his hand to Bruce. Bruce, who got startled by the hand a bit too close for comfort, but Clark’s hand defensively. Clark hissed, but he didn’t pull off him instantly, instead opting to let Bruce let go. If the other was clearly agitated, and definitely did not speak a lick of English, t was a bad idea to panic then make him panic. He didn’t manage to hold the wince that escaped him when the teeth sunk into his hand though. Bruce looked up at him, then back his hand tilting his head. When Clark didn’t panic, he released his bite, and backed away a few feet, staring back at Clark.

Clark saw him back off slightly and was quick to try reassure him.

“Hey- no hey its ok! I’m not hurt, just a bite. I’ve definitely had worse.”

As the blood seeped from Clark’s hand, it got into the water. Bruce sniffed at it, before looking back to Clark. Flashing his scales again.

“ . . _ . ~ _ _ _ ~ _ _ _ ~ _ . . “

Clark watched him sniff the air, before humming and tilting his head. He wasn’t sure what the other meant, but it was clear he wanted something. “What?” he asked, confused at the random flashes jut displayed to him. Bruces face scrunched up, sensing the other had no clue what he had wanted.

“ . . _ . ~ _ _ _ ~ _ _ _ ~ _ . . “

He tried to flash more pointedly, huffing when Clark looked just as lost as before. He jabbed a finger to the reef, eyes falling on a lionfish. He gestured to it pointedly, then looking back at Clark and flashing again. Same word.

“ . . _ . ~ _ _ _ ~ _ _ _ ~ _ . . “

Clarks eyes followed his gesture to the food before it clicked in his head. “oh! Your hungry?”  He asked, then smiling again. He swum to the reef and plucked a few lionfish from it before swimming back. Bruce had sat himself on a piece of coral, black scales contrasting greatly with the vibrant coral under him. Clark handed him one tentatively, relived when Bruce took it and begun to eat.

“Sooooo, that flashing means you want food huh?” Clark observed, not surprised when he didn’t get a response. “And that flashing was different then when you wanted my attention. The other one was something else, that one means food- could I write this down?”

Clark asked, pulling out his JL pad and going over to the space where he could keep personal notes. He looked at the other, who was still eating. Bruce was ignoring him in favour of his food at the moment, happily munching on the lionfish, pulling out the spindles. Clark waited for him to be finished with that one, before getting his attention. He pointed to the fish and looked back at Bruce, then gesturing to his tail.

“Can you show me the sequence of flashes for food?”

Bruce had no clue what he was talking about, but he did pick up that when he communicated with Clark, he seemed to refer to the communication as flashes. Confused, and feeling slightly patronised, Bruce flashed his tail again in the: “ . . _ . ~ _ _ _ ~ _ _ _ ~ _ . . “. sequence, going slower. To Bruce, going slower was a kind of sarcastic act, mocking Clark for needing him to re-do it. Clark had no idea of Bruces mindset, smiling at him while thinking the slow flashes were for his benefit. He wrote down the flashes and what they meant.

[Clarks Notes:]

[ how to communicate with new friend. Doesn’t speak English.]

[I call him Bruce. I don’t know his name.]

[ “ . . _ . ~ _ _ _ ~ _ _ _ ~ _ . . “. means food when he flashes like that.]

Clark put his pad down, looking back at Bruce with a smile before handing him another fish. Bruce had no idea Clark was infatuated with him. Or maybe he did. Bruce was fine with Clark’s existence as long as he kept bringing him food. This fish was tastier than fish from the trenches, and there wasn’t many fish down there at all. So, Bruce was happy to keep coming back here and get his fish while Clark took notes on him. Stupid reef mer.

Bruce gave him a look when Clark reached out but let him touch the scales on his tail. Even if begrudgingly. Clark ran his hand over the strange textured scales, moving his head slightly to see the slight purple sheen of his scales. It made the light that rippled through the ocean water slightly purple. But what was most stunning was the way they felt. They were soft but they got harder when Clark put any semblance of pressure on them. They were cool and metallic, probably made to withstand high water pressures.

He was about to speak when his pad went off with an emergency, beeping loudly. That startled Bruce and pulled away, staring at the pad for a solid second before taking off back to the darker part of the reef. Clark reached out, about to stop him but he was already long gone. He groaned, glaring at the pad on his wrist as he muted it, “Great,” he muttered, starting to swim back to base. “Just great. This better be good.”

Mer au JL:

(Btw they haven’t met Bruce yet, Superbat centric.)

Open to any suggestions about others but have only planned Bruce and Clark’s species.

Bruce: Flashlight fish mer. Google those fish, their cuties.

Clark: Humphead Maori Wrasse Mer. Ok. I know the fish is ugly, but it’s large, a reef fish, its colours are beautiful, and the tail type is what I’m looking for. If you goggle it, I pray for your very soul. Don’t focus on its head to hard.

———————————————————————

“Clark, you’re going to miss the meeting.” Arthur said, sighing in exasperation and looking to the other Mer, who didn’t seem to care at the moment.

Clark sighed, looking over his shoulder as he kept his body facing the reef.

“Ok, I get it. But I’ll be there! I just need to check this out first, we’ve had no idea what this is, but someone’s spotted the black thing, can I At least scout it out? Kay, thanks, bye Arthur!”

Clark finished, not letting Arthur start and darted down into the brush anyway.

“Clark! Come back- Jesus.” Arthur mutters, going on about something like ‘arrogant prick’ before going off to Atlantis to take care of himself before the meeting.

Clark swam through the reef, looking to the pad on which the location of the last sighting of the entity was found.

A few weeks ago, they had started getting reports of a big entity swimming around the reef, long, but people have only reported glimpses of black scales with an iridescent purple and blue sheen.

But every time they came to check it out the thing had just disappeared. But Clark got this notification less than an hour ago, he had time to explore.

And he’d been looking for this for a very long time.

He got to the sight of the reef and begin to scout out the area. It was in the darker parts of the reef, close to where the trenches were. Arthur had said that going down there was basically suicide, and that’s why most mer’s steered away from it.

He smelt the faint scent of blood in the water and followed it, till he saw that flash of black with the small purple shimmer the water reflected around it. Clark stiffens and takes a breath, before slowly and silently inching out from behind the coral to see what it was. He didn’t expect it to be another Mer.

Most mer’s didn’t have dark scales. Well, reef mer’s. It normally went darker scales the deeper they went. But Clark had never seen black scales before. A soft breath left his mouth in the sound of a ‘hah.’

The other Mer clearly heard him and whipped around, blue eyes focusing on blue.  The other had short black hair and pale skin, blood on his chin from his meal. A whole ass shark lay behind him, Clark chuckled nervously.

“Uh- you’ve got a little, something, on your chin right there?”

The other instantly spooked and took off, fleeing at speeds Clark hadn’t seen in a long time, with deliberation that was a little startling. Clark gave chase, weaving through the colourful coral blurring as the two passed.

“Stop running!” Clark shouted, trying to reach him.

The other Mer dipped under a pice of coral and speeding to the other side of it. It was a small opening Clark definitely couldn’t for through, he swam above it and looked from above, trying to find the exit to the crevice in which the other went through.

He saw the other start to emerge and waited till he was put to swim down and pin him to the reef bed.

The other was very startled when he felt the grab, and threw his body weight back against Clark, turning and managing to throw him half off. Clark grabbed him in a sort of headlock and the other wrapped his tail around Clark, the appendage trapping Clark as the other Mer threw him, then grabbing his neck with a gasp.

Clark rolled over and back to his bearings, looking at the Mer in front of him. He tried to put his hand up in a sort of placation, attempting to calm the other.

“Hey, hey. I’m not going to hurt you; I’m just here to- “

What was he here to do really. It was mostly his job to now take this one somewhere and find out his agenda. If he had one. It really didn’t matter what he said, actually. It was quite clear the other had no idea what he was saying.

“Wait- what’s your name?” Clark asked the other, swimming closer. The other met tried to back up, but his back hit the coral, and he just stared fowrd at Clark. The other mer attempted to scare Clark off him by flashing his scales, in a sort of warning. Clark was entranced on the other hand. He had never seen a Mer do anything like that before, and it fascinated him.

“Woah, how did you do that?” He asked, swimming closer and reaching for the others fin mindlessly. In which he then got slapped across the face by his tail fin. Clark paused, then looked at him sheepishly.

“Probably deserved that, huh?”

Clark hummed, then gently grabbed a lionfish out of the reef. He had interrupted the others meal, and they were an invasive species here anyways. He wasn’t sure if the other would go for it, but when he stretched his hand out in offering it was very hesitantly grabbed the fish as teeth sharper then Clark had seen in a long time tore through the fishes’ scales.

And he couldn’t help but be morbidly fascinated.

“You have no clue what I’m saying, huh?” he mumbled, going to sit next to the eating Mer but got a glare. He inched away till the glares topped. He ended up sitting a good three feet away.

“I’m going to call you Bruce. You can’t understand me either way, I’m Clark.”

Bruce looked up at him, black hair floating slightly around his head like a dark ink crown, contrasting so very much with his pale skin. Eyes bluer than the water itself met Clarks as he tilted his head, pearly black scales glinting as he flicked his tail in mild intrigue.

Clark seemed quite pleased when Bruce’s gaze fell on him in the least hostile way it had in a while. He nodded, pointing to himself.

“Mhm. I’m Clark.” He said, grinning, he pointed to Bruce, who twitched as his face scrunched up slightly. “and I’m calling you Bruce till you figure out how to communicate your real name to me.”

Bruce decided to ignore him for the moment, teeth ripping back into the fish’s flesh as he ate, ever really keeping one eye off Clark. When the meat had been stripped off its bones he paused, then looked to Clark as if offended. He stared at the other, as if expecting something.

Clark, upon realising he was probably still hungry, smiled and went to grab another fish, seemingly unbothered by the nonverbal order he was given. He yanked it out of a hole in the coral and swam up to Bruce, offering out his hand for him to grab it again. Bruce snatched it without hesitation this time, teeth sinking back into the food. After a while of snacking, he looked at Clark, and when Bruce saw it was getting dark, he slinked away before Clark could catch him, into the darkness. The only thing he saw was the outline of the body that belonged to Bruce stop, and flash. As if a belligerent thanks. And Clark didn’t give chase. He had a feeling he’d be seeing the strange Mer again very soon.
