David has math with Bumlets, history with Crutchy and Blink, science with Tommy boy and Specs, and English with Dutchy and Kathrine. He meets Jack when he gets assigned to tutor him in English to help get his grades better than last semester’s. Dave never really spoke to any of the Newsies he shared classes with so when he and Jack went to the Lodging house to grab homework to work on for a tutoring session, he got to formally meet all of them. He also didn’t know they were called anything other than their legal names, so when Jack said he shared classes with his friends on the way to the Lodge, David had no clue who he was talking about.
Dave tutors Jack in English (his worst subject, ironic) start of second semester junior year (most of the characters are going to be juniors except for a few which I will explain in a different post). At first David found Jack kind of annoying, but over time, he grows fond of him. After a few weeks of everyday sessions Jack’s grade starts to show improvement so, jack takes the two of them to go get coffee one weekend. While they’re out Jack asks Dave if he can help him on an assignment for a different class, he agrees and they drive down to the Lodging house to grab the project and head back to the coffee shop where they could get more peace and quiet then staying at the house.
The moment Jack opens the door the two are greeted with Pie-eater and Bumlets on the floor, wrestling for a Wii remote, being cheered on by Finch and Romeo, Racetrack filming the entire thing, and everyone watching like it’s a completely normal event. Jack pulls David passed that, and up the stairs to the bunks while David attempts to look back to watch the fight. As they walk over to Jacks bunk, David gets a whiff of what smells like boys locker room. Jack obviously doesn’t notice given he’s used to it, so Dave doesn’t comment and try’s to ignore it. Jack grabs his school bag and they head back downstairs to leave. Pie and Bumlets, still fighting, dash up the stairs, Bumlets behind Pie, accidentally hits Daves shoulder, causing him to loose balance and fall down the stairs. He grabs Jack to regain balance but ends up taking Jack down with him (forth floor to the ground). The two fall and Jack ends up right on top of Davey with their faces like 5 inches away from each other. They hear a laugh and Jack looks up to find Race standing in front of Kloppman’s desk writing something down. Jack knows Race will tell the whole house so he quickly gets off Dave, walks over to him, hits Race in the back of the head and whispers something to him, inaudible to Dave who is still picking himself up off the ground. David helps Jack regather his homework and the two awkwardly leave the house and get into Jack’s truck. Once they get in, they sit there awkwardly, trying to find something to say. Dave blurts out and apology and Jack apologies for Bumlets knocking him down. A few seconds pass and they drive back to the coffee shop. It’s around 3pm when they get there and they stay until closing at 6pm.
That’s all I have written out on paper so far but it’s all in my head and I will try to get the grade list and first chapter out soon.
All the Newsies share hand and shower towels and they just wash them and lay them out hotel style (all the towels have at least one hole, they’re old). As the Jacob’s start to get closer to the Newsies, they start to learn their birthdays. They get each of them a new hand and shower towel for their birthday, in which Sarah will embroider their name on to both towels in their favorite color.
Each Newsie has a mug that only they use. They have a cabinet in their kitchen specifically to store everyone’s mugs. Each cup is special/specific to each person, some made the one they use and others were given or bought theirs. Each mug is labeled at the bottom with the Newsies nickname and all the ones that aren’t labeled are for anyone to use.
(i thought of this while making hot chocolate and i grabbed my favorite mug and was like, huh hc time)
Nights with the Newsies can either go two ways, everyone goes to sleep at around the same time, or just the younger Newsies then the rest are downstairs doing who knows what. Once everyone is asleep making a noise could be life or death, and by death I mean a pillow to the face or back of the head. They hate when people talk when they’re trying to sleep so if you walk through the Lodging House at night it’s dead silent and I mean dead silent. If you make a noise that isn’t controllable, like talking, many of the boys will throw pillows or mumble/yell to go back to sleep at the source of the sound. Some of them like snore or sleep talk (which is very rare but has happened) but they know who it is because of how used to it they are. Mornings aren’t any better, a lot of the boys are not morning people in the slightest.
I know this like doesn’t make any sense but it does in my head and will probably make more sense on paper.
You can’t tell me that modern day au’s of both fandoms compare the two to the movie counterparts. Specs saying Snitch looks like Neville and like George or Fred saying Neville looks like Snitch. Obviously in modern day au’s the two fandoms would be movies in the other universe.
can we give jake more love please
There’s a room on first floor of the lodging house, right next to Kloppman’s called the sick/guest room. It has four beds in it, one in each corner, and a bathroom with a bathtub/shower. They use this room when one of them gets sick so they can basically quarantine them. Once four people occupy the room and more people get sick, they either have people share beds or they go back to sleeping in their own bunks because once one Newsie gets sick, they all get sick. They also use this room for guests, so if say the Jacob’s (once they get closer in the story), or Medda or whatever, ever need somewhere to stay, they would sleep in that room. There is one window and that’s on the wall you see when you walk in, right next to the bathroom entrance. It’s a rectangular room with the longer sides having the room entrance and the bathroom entrance. The beds are backed into all four corners, touching the walls.
They each have their own labeled drawers in the bathroom with their name written on a piece of tape thats suck right above the handle. They keep their medication, their toothbrush, deodorant, chapstick, etc. Any toiletries you wouldn’t normally share go in your own drawer. Everything else like lotion, maybe toothpaste, possibly hair care stuff, shaving cream, anything you would probably leave on your counter. They also have designated cabinets for like medical supplies, extra towels, toilet paper, tissues, blah blah blah. The bathroom is set up the same way it is in the movie minus the barrels Snipeshooter is like using as a bathtub. Because they don’t have showers in the movie I’m expanding the bathroom so there can be showers in there. So right next to the four stalls will be four curtain showers, one of them having a handicap bar and seat for Crutchy. The only bathtubs they have is in a room I’m calling the sick/guest room that will be talked about in the next update.
I watched Carrying the Banner with my sister over and over again to figure out where everyone in newsies sleeps and all that fun stuff. Based on what I saw this is a rough sketch of where everyone would be. (the empty space is the bathrooms)

ivan was butchered, trey shit himself to death, and max fell from the top of the world building
headcanon that there's HEAPS of spare beds in the lodging house but the newsies just choose to sleep in the same beds hit post
so albert has like long-ish hair, right? he puts his hair up in double braids more for practicality's sake than anything. he has two younger sisters, that's how he knows how to braid.
now consider race who sees albert doing his hair up and watches so intently that he learns. sometimes the girlsies in brooklyn let him practice on their hair, just so he can offer to do it for albert. albert doesn't say yes very often.
but, one day he does. his wrists hurt and his arms are tired. he sits down at the bottom of the staircase of the lodging house, race sits a step higher. albert lays his head on race's thigh, just a little bit, and race nearly explodes. he tries not to pull on the braid too hard (spot's main complaint) and albert sighs happily as he feels race's fingers card through his hair. it's music to races ears. he lets himself smile, softly, smittenly, as he 'accidentally' strokes albert's cheek on his way to get a new strand of hair.
race wants this all the time.
how they aleep btw

Medda is the ultimate mom, and loves the younger newsies. When nobody’s performing, she lets them run around the theater, try on costumes and jewelry, and play with the Beauties. Sometimes the older boys come in to collect their younger friends to find them in floppy hats, pink feather boas, and high heeled shoes. Medda’s happy to let them keep beads and ribbons, and the little newsies are happy to have a souvenir from the theater.
The mornings at the lodging house are normally a lot to take in. They are loud and hectic, but it’s when Jack puts on his cowboy hat when things really heat up. Albert and Race look at the hat and the back at each other; Jack groans.
“Whats that? A hat. A crazy, funky, junky hat. Overslept. Hair unsightly. Tryin’ to like Kiera Knightly. We’ve been there. We’ve done that. We see right through your funky hat,” Albert and Racetrack chorus in unison. They do this every morning. dance moves and all.
(It’s the Crazy funky hat song from Wizards of Waverly Place. Albert and Race would 100% tease Jack with this and he’d hate it. Link:https://youtu.be/V_gVb3z6vtc)
Jack has a little mini-cactus plant named Hank that he keeps in the lodging house because it’s “like in Santa Fe.” He makes the other newsies water Hank on certain days of the week. He once tried to sleep with Hank like a teddy bear, but regretted it in the morning with several needles sticking out of his face.
The boys get Jack cowboy apparel for every holiday and birthday. Race and Davey think it’s hilarious. What makes it better is on birthdays its only red bandannas. Every. Single. Newsie. gets Jack a red bandanna for his birthday. Every year. Without fail.

If there's one thing about Jack Kelly—the man will fight some laundry just before having a romantic conversation with a pretty woman on a rooftop.
Jack: Have you seen Spot?
Davey: Who?
Jack: Short, strong, runs Brooklyn?
Davey: …
Jack: Looks like if Sunday was a person?
Davey: Oh yeah! He just left!
Crutchie: I think that the difference between us is that you like cars, whereas I wouldn’t know the difference between a Ford and a Honda if they both ran me over.
Race: Spot isn't an asshole. He just...doesn't place much stock in politeness
