"The mighty hammer Mjolnir, forged in the heart of a dying star. Its power has no equal, as a weapon to destroy or as a tool to build. It is a fit companion for a king." -Odin Okay this just made me laugh out loud. So I had to share. So, if you live on Planet Earth, you have probably read reviews/heard from other people about how amazing Thor: Ragnarok is.
I’m not gonna be one of those people.
Alright, I don’t think it’s terrible either. I just think Ragnarok is okay, and somewhat on par with other “okay” Marvel’s Cinematic Universe (*cough* Ant-Man *cough*).
I could say that the one great thing about Ragnarok is that it has a lot of personality. The sin of previous Thor movies were that they were not only forgettable, they felt “cookie-cutter”. They felt like you’ve seen them before, and in fact you definitely have. Meanwhile, Ragnarok is definitely its own beast, and that is for sure thanks to Taika Waititi’s clear vision as director. His vision in infusing fun and humor is definitely something that Thor sorely needs. And that proved to work, as evidenced by its success both critically and commercially.
However, Taika’s brand of humor is not my brand of humor. Because the story is quite thin, Ragnarok definitely hinges a lot on its humor. So if you like Taika (see What We Do In The Shadows) then I guess you’ll like it, but if you don’t get the laughs then you won’t enjoy it as much. I’ve always said that Marvel movies are always unexpectedly funny, but although there were laughs, they were not usually at the expense of the characters. However, Taika likes to make fun of his characters, to the point that he makes them look quite foolish. He probably was trying to make them more “relatable” or something, but for me, they just make me respect our heroes less.
The villain is played by none other than Cate Blanchett. Cate Blanchett just has that enormous movie presence that makes every movie better, but her character Hela was not given the gravity it deserves. Given that Hela is Thor and Loki’s sister (and given what happened to their father Odin), Ragnarok is ripe for a real, emotional family story. But Ragnarok failed on that front. Sure, Ragnarok touches on that in one or two scenes, but they definitely were not enough. An emotional core like that should be ingrained in its story, but instead it just felt tacked on. Just because Ragnarok is a funny movie, that doesn’t excuse the lack of heart in this film. Just look at Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2. That movie was funny as hell, but the emotional content of that movie was through the roof. Sadly Ragnarok couldn’t do anything like that, instead Hela just felt like another Malekith (villain from Thor: The Dark World, if you don’t remember, who was not that good of a villain to begin with).
Ragnarok, though, definitely plays on Chris Hemsworth’s strength. Hemsworth is an incredible comedic actor, and he fits right in this new tone. I couldn’t grasp much of Hulk/Bruce Banner’s character in this movie, mainly because in-universe we have not seen him for 2 years. He has changed a lot but we were not given time to revisit his character more. Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie though, is really great! She is badass and memorable, and is definitely a worthy addition to MCU family. About Loki… I can’t believe I’m gonna say this, but I do think that Loki’s character has definitely run its course. Unless something happens to the character that changes him, I can’t see how Loki could add value to future Marvel movies.
TL;DR If you need some laughs, or you have 2 hours to kill, Thor: Ragnarok is definitely a great movie. But if you’re looking for something more emotionally profound, you’re not gonna get it here.
I also love that the redemption in God of War isn't tied to forgiveness, like so many other redemption arcs in media (see Zuko's). Kratos at one point literally says he doesn't care if Freya forgives him. It's honestly refreshing to see a story that says "Whether or not other people forgive you doesn't matter, only that you are a better person," it really works with the catchphrase (I'm not sure if that's the right term) "We must be better."
I like that God of War never makes it a question of deserving. Did Kratos 'deserve' his redemption? Probably not but he chose to be better in spite of that and that's what matters, so did Thor right at the end. On the other hand did Baldur 'deserve' his death? Again, probably not but he made it clear his choice was made no matter how many chances he was offered.
First off, it feels like most people see that Snorri Sturluson was Christian and immediately assume he did what the Irish monks did to Irish mythology. This completely ignores why he wrote the myths down, which was to establish a cultural connection between Iceland and Norway, in order to try and get Iceland to join the Kingdom of Norway (which failed). It also ignores that fact that he WASN’T A MONK. Outside of a part about the Aesir being Trojans and living in Asia (which makes no sense when looking at the rest of the Edda and the myths within), and some stuff about some great god who is more powerful than all of the Aesir and is never actually named, there isn’t much evidence to there being large post-Christian changes.
The second problem is that the theory focuses too much on Loki. He doesn’t do much during Ragnarök. He captains a ship (whatever that meant to the Norse) and he kills/dies to Heimdallr. Each of his kids from Angrboda does more. Fenrir eats Odin, and in some versions also the sun, moon, and stars. Jormungandr floods Midgard and poisons the sky, along with killing the strongest of the Aesir, Thor. Hel(a) brings an army of Draugr from her realm to fight Odin and Freya’s einherjar (Freya got half of those who died in battle). I agree that Ragnarök is a story of revenge, but its not Loki’s. ITS THE JOTNAR’S REVENGE. Revenge for a long list of insults and grievances that started with the killing of Ymir during the Voluspa by Odin and his brothers. Also, both Fenrir and Jormungandr are getting revenge against the gods they hate most, whom they are stated to kill. In the end Surtr, king of Muspelheim, kills Freyr, destroys Asgard, and burns all of the worlds (which since they are made of Ymir’s corpse, make this technically Ymir’s funeral pyre). Also the Jotnar on Loki’s ship aren’t his troops, they are led by a different Jotun, and it isn’t even his ship.
I could do an entire other post on the problems with how Loki gets viewed through modern lenses, and I’m tempted to.
i use a cane to walk, i named it ragnarok after crona's sword from soul eater :^)
Thor: You must be Hela. I’m Thor Odinson.
Hela: You don’t look like him!
Loki: Prehaps we can come to an arrangement?
Hela: You sound like him.
Loki: I’ve never met this man in my life!
Thor: He’s my brother!
Loki: Adopted.
Thor: YESSS
(Turns to the grand master)
Thor: We know each other! He’s a friend from work!
Thor: What’s wrong with you? You’re making me look bad. I told them we were friends from work!
Banner: (Points to his head) Biggest muscle in the body.
Thor: (analyzes his body) I have big muscles everywhere so we’re good!
Val: This team of yours, has it got a name?
Thor: Yeah,it’s called…the Revengers!
Val: Revengers?
Thor: Yeah because I’m getting revenge, you’re getting revenge and Banner is…?
Banner: I’ll get something!
Thor: (drags Loki) SOMEBODY! PLEASE GET HELP! MY BROTHERS DYING!
(Proceeds to throw Loki)
Thor: HaHa! Works every time!
Loki: You guys look like you’re in desperate need for leadership!
Korg: Thank you!
Loki: Hit her with your lightning!
Thor: I just hit her with the biggest lightning strike in the history of lightnings and she’s still ALIVE!
Thor: HULK! YOU MORON! STOP!
(Hulk gets thrown back)
Thor: You IDIOT! Stop smashing for once!
Hulk: Big monster, Hulk smash.
Mr. Hiddleston's quote on that:
There was a big sequence on the Last Bridge in the movie, and we all had these choreography sequences while Chris and Cate Blanchett, and I, Idris and Taica were fighting together. [Waititi, the director] There were all these elements related to the great stunt department in a motion capture suit.
And we were doing that run, it was in the afternoon, and it was me, Idris and maybe Taica. I can’t remember. Sure, Idris was there, and it was our two-shot fighting these great athletes who are stunt guys. And I ran out of choreography. Basically, I think I finished the move before Idris, and he was still rolling, and I just stood there like a lemon and didn’t want to do anything interesting. So I flipped the knife over and caught it by accident. “
Idris laughed at it. We looked back on it.He was [like], “Oh God, he went and finally played the knife.” Because he had finished the fighting movement. But yeah, it ended up staying. Since then I have tried to do it. When I try to do it with a wooden spoon, it doesn’t work and I always drop it. So that was one of them, but it never happens twice.

I just saw on youtube that Loki's knife flip scene was an accident. Idk if it's true tho. See for yourself. Here's the video:

Ragnarok (and crona) Ita backpack update
It's "fuller" than it used to be.
I got that liquid shaker today in the mail, I'm happy with how it came out. It's boarder is black and lavender, i forgot to specify I wanted the black to be mixed in so it's visible but oh well.
Idk where to post this so here it is, a room spray I ordered a lil bit ago. It's nice.
I made a Ragnarok themed ita bag backpack, because he's my favorite Soul Eater character.
Most of the pins and charms were bought off of Etsy or gifts, but I made a few by hand.
The last one is a recycled slightly defective No Face pin, I based the design off a manga panel[chapter 4, page 123], it took the longest for me to perfect but I'm happy with how it have out
As someone who was raised by a single mother who has bipolar disorder and was diagnosed at an early age with RAD, I greatly see myself in Ragnarok's Laurits.
THE BOY AND HIS FATHER(S)!!!!
prodigal son.
a sort of epilogue for God of War Ragnarok, since I miss these two so much.
