We need to bring back private rail cars as the cool, sexy, exclusive way to travel, so instead of dumping the carbon budget of a small nation in the global south on private jets, celebrities have to attach their luxury pull an cars to the back of an Amtrak. Then the celebrities will lobby for Amtrak lines to be better

Seriously when did this

We Need To Bring Back Private Rail Cars As The Cool, Sexy, Exclusive Way To Travel, So Instead Of Dumping

Become sexier than this

We Need To Bring Back Private Rail Cars As The Cool, Sexy, Exclusive Way To Travel, So Instead Of Dumping
We Need To Bring Back Private Rail Cars As The Cool, Sexy, Exclusive Way To Travel, So Instead Of Dumping

Like isn't it nice to watch the scenery, to be able to open a window and have fresh air, to be able to stand up all the way, not have your ears pop?

Klaus Bürgle artwork - a morass of elevated trains and highways with cars on them, with an industrialized city in the background. One of the trains has a cutaway section, revealing that it's a massive double-decker.

people who like trains “because they’re good for the environment” or “because they’re more efficient” are lame and cringe.

trains are cool because they’re cool and if you don’t love them at their massive steam train belching hundreds of tonnes of carbon into the atmosphere then you don’t deserve them at their electric high speed rail.

Two rough sketches of a town square with a train on display. On the left, a top-down view with generic train cars. On the right, a perspective view with a steam train and colored houses.

13-14/11/18 - 65-66/100 Days Of Productivity

13-14/11/18 - 65-66/100 days of productivity

14th - well today has been long. I had an applicant visit day to the uni of Birmingham, which was so much fun - until it came to getting home. I was supposed to be on a quarter past four train to be home for half seven. It is now ten to seven and I am waiting another 30 minutes for the final leg of my journey home to start after standing for 2 hours on a packed and very late train. I should arrive at my finial station at nine.

It’s not the staff’s fault necessarily, but we were turned away by a staff member when our train was actually boarding, so we missed it.

HOWEVER I did get to make good progress with Selam Berlin! And I got to play with sodium alginate and calcium chloride, and experience a lecture on why transition metal compounds are coloured.

I did my German catch-up work on the train to Birmingham, too. Now to make some important emails!

Let's Talk Trains

I have fond memories of my Mom taking me on the train from our home in Indiana to downtown Chicago.  Ever since, I have loved the sound of a train whistle.

I've taken my GrandGirls on train trips:  some long, some short.  Each time on a train I feel so relaxed and comfortable.

This Saturday, May 12, 2012, Amtrak is celebrating trains by hosting National Train Day.  Check out this link to see where you can participate in fun activities for young and old, enjoy interactive exhibits and more:  http://www.simon.com/holidaypromo/mno.aspx

If you have a train story you would like to share with me, I'd love to hear it.  Please e-mail me at janesaunders@me.com

I look forward to hearing from you!

My Big Sister and the Train Horn

My gifted and beautiful sister, who was thirteen years older, died three years ago yesterday, February 19.

She lived in the Northern California mountains.  Very close to her home were train tracks.  When we talked on the phone and the train would blow its horn, we would stop talking so that I could listen.  I loved trains because they reminded me of special times during my childhood when my mom and I would take the train into Chicago from our home in Indiana.  Chicago was the "big city" to us living in a small town.  I felt so special on that train!

I've been especially tuned into the sound of the train horn in the distance from our home.  There is comfort in that sound because of what my sister and I shared during our phone conversations.

In the recent past, I've explored locally with my GrandGirls via train trips. I experienced that special feeling again as the trips were the first time for them on a train!  One of the best parts of those trips is hearing the train horn as we rolled along.

There are tastes, tunes, smells and sounds that awaken good memories.  Is there a sound that brings you a little comfort?
